Climate change: Earth's giant game of Tetris - Joss Fong
-
0:06 - 0:08To understand climate change,
-
0:08 - 0:10think of the game Tetris.
-
0:10 - 0:14For eons Earth has played a version of this game with blocks of carbon.
-
0:14 - 0:18They enter the atmosphere as carbon dioxide gas from volcanoes,
-
0:18 - 0:19decaying plant matter,
-
0:19 - 0:21breathing creatures
-
0:21 - 0:22and the surface of the sea.
-
0:22 - 0:26And they leave the atmosphere when they're used by plants during photosynthesis,
-
0:26 - 0:28absorbed back into the ocean
-
0:28 - 0:30or stored in soil and sediment.
-
0:30 - 0:32This game of Tetris is called the carbon cycle,
-
0:32 - 0:34and it's the engine of life on Earth.
-
0:34 - 0:37What's the connection to climate?
-
0:37 - 0:39Well, when that carbon dioxide is in the air,
-
0:39 - 0:41waiting to be reabsorbed,
-
0:41 - 0:43it traps a portion of the sun's heat,
-
0:43 - 0:45which would otherwise escape to space.
-
0:45 - 0:48That's why carbon dioxide is called a greenhouse gas.
-
0:48 - 0:50It creates a blanket of warmth,
-
0:50 - 0:51known as the greenhouse effect,
-
0:51 - 0:54that keeps our Earth from freezing like Mars.
-
0:54 - 0:58The more carbon dioxide blocks hang out in the atmosphere waiting to be cleared,
-
0:58 - 1:00the warmer Earth becomes.
-
1:00 - 1:02Though the amount of carbon in the atmosphere
-
1:02 - 1:05has varied through ice ages and astroid impacts,
-
1:05 - 1:09over the past 8,000 years the stable climate we know took shape,
-
1:09 - 1:12allowing human civilization to thrive.
-
1:12 - 1:14But about 200 years ago,
-
1:14 - 1:17we began digging up that old carbon that had been stored in the soil.
-
1:17 - 1:21These fossil fuels, coal, oil and natural gas
-
1:21 - 1:24are made from the buried remains of plants and animals
-
1:24 - 1:27that died long before humans evolved.
-
1:27 - 1:29The energy stored inside them was able to power
-
1:29 - 1:32our factories, cars and power plants.
-
1:32 - 1:37But burning these fuels also injected new carbon blocks into Earth's Tetris game.
-
1:37 - 1:40At the same time, we cleared forests for agriculture,
-
1:40 - 1:43reducing the earth's ability to remove the blocks.
-
1:43 - 1:47And since 1750, the amount of carbon in the atmosophere
-
1:47 - 1:49has increased by 40%,
-
1:49 - 1:51and shows no sign of slowing.
-
1:51 - 1:54Just like in Tetris, the more blocks pile up,
-
1:54 - 1:57the harder it becomes to restore stability.
-
1:57 - 1:59The extra carbon dioxide in the atmosphere
-
1:59 -accelerates the Greenhouse Effect
-
Not Syncedby trapping more heat near the surface
-
Not Syncedand causing polar ice caps to melt.
-
Not SyncedAnd the more they melt, the less sunlight they're able to reflect,
-
Not Syncedmaking the oceans warm even faster.
-
Not SyncedSea levels rise, coastal populations are threatened with flooding,
-
Not Syncednatural ecosystems are disrupted,
-
Not Syncedand the weather becomes more extreme over time.
-
Not SyncedClimate change may effect different people and places in different ways.
-
Not SyncedBut, ultimately, it's a game that we're all stuck playing.
-
Not SyncedAnd unlike in Tetris,
-
Not Syncedwe won't get a chance to start over and try again.

There's a game of Tetris happening on a global scale: The playing space is planet Earth, and all those pesky, stacking blocks represent carbon dioxide -- a greenhouse gas that is piling up ever more rapidly as we burn the fossil fuels that run our cars, factories and power plants. Joss Fong outlines how this overload of CO2 leads to climate change and reminds us that, unlike Tetris, we won't get an opportunity to start over and try again.
