The movie of your life | DeVon Franklin | TEDxIronwoodStatePrison

  • 0:06 - 0:10
I want you, for a moment,
to look at your life as a movie.
  • 0:10 - 0:11
    As a young child -
  • 0:11 - 0:14
    when I thought
about the movie of my life -
  • 0:14 - 0:16
I'm the middle child of three boys
  • 0:16 - 0:20
and one of the few African-American
    executives in Hollywood.
  • 0:20 - 0:24
Well, when I go back and look at my life,
when I was young growing up in the church,
  • 0:24 - 0:27
    they said, "DeVon,
    you can't go into Hollywood.
  • 0:27 - 0:30
    That's the devil's playground;
    that's Sodom and Gomorrah."
  • 0:30 - 0:35
But I said, "I believe God is calling me
in the movie of my life into Hollywood
  • 0:35 - 0:38
    to tell stories
    that can change the world."
  • 0:38 - 0:42
"But DeVon, if you go to Hollywood,
you're going to lose your faith.
  • 0:42 - 0:43
    Don't you understand
  • 0:43 - 0:46
    that that is a town
that does not respect who you are
  • 0:46 - 0:47
    or the God you serve?"
  • 0:47 - 0:50
    But as a young child,
I would say, "Wait a minute.
  • 0:50 - 0:53
You're teaching me in the Bible
that faith allows me to do all things
  • 0:53 - 0:56
and I can do all things through Christ
    who strengthens me.
  • 0:56 - 0:57
    But all of a sudden,
  • 0:57 - 1:00
I get to the gates of Hollywood
and the power of God stops?
  • 1:00 - 1:04
Tell me, What am I supposed to believe?
  • 1:04 - 1:07
Does faith work or does fear work?
  • 1:07 - 1:12
    Because you're telling me intellectually
that faith is supposed to guide me,
  • 1:12 - 1:14
    but then you're teaching
    me to practice fear
  • 1:14 - 1:17
    the moment I get outside
    the doors of the church."
  • 1:17 - 1:21
So you can only imagine as a young boy,
when you get smart with your elders,
  • 1:21 - 1:23
    they say, "Boy, don't you
    get smart with me."
  • 1:24 - 1:26
And I said, "I'm not trying to get smart.
  • 1:26 - 1:28
    I'm just trying to understand
what is the path in life
  • 1:28 - 1:31
that is going to lead to success."
  • 1:31 - 1:32
And so as a young child, I said,
  • 1:32 - 1:36
    "Listen, I've watched these movies
like 'Rocky' and 'Back to the Future.'
  • 1:36 - 1:40
    What I loved about 'Rocky'
is that he thought he was a bum.
  • 1:40 - 1:43
And when he got the chance
    to fight Apollo Creed,
  • 1:43 - 1:44
what was his number one goal?
  • 1:44 - 1:47
He said, 'I don't even care if I win.
  • 1:47 - 1:51
I just want to go the distance.'"
  • 1:51 - 1:54
When I would see movies like that
    as a kid, I said, "That's me."
  • 1:54 - 1:55
You know, as a middle child -
  • 1:55 - 1:57
Any middle children in the house?
  • 1:57 - 1:59
    Okay, we'll have
    a support group after this.
  • 1:59 - 2:02
    Alright, you know we need
a little extra care and counseling
  • 2:02 - 2:05
    because the older one,
my older brother, he was the oldest,
  • 2:05 - 2:07
and my youngest was the baby,
  • 2:07 - 2:10
and here I am, the middle child,
kind of put off to the side.
  • 2:10 - 2:13
But when I would see films,
    I would get inspired.
  • 2:13 - 2:14
    And I said,
  • 2:14 - 2:18
"I want to be able to make movies
    that can absolutely touch people
  • 2:18 - 2:20
    in the way that 'Rocky'
    and 'The Color Purple'
  • 2:20 - 2:23
and 'Back to the Future' did for me."
  • 2:23 - 2:24
But I had to make a choice.
  • 2:24 - 2:27
I said, "Am I going to go against
    what I'm being taught
  • 2:27 - 2:30
    and follow where God's voice
    is leading me?
  • 2:30 - 2:33
Or am I going to follow
    those who may be ill-equipped
  • 2:33 - 2:34
    to develop my movie
  • 2:34 - 2:37
    and become what they think
    my story should be?"
  • 2:38 - 2:39
    Well, at a young age,
  • 2:39 - 2:42
I said, "I have to believe
that God is the director of my story,
  • 2:42 - 2:44
    and I'm going to follow
    Him to the industry."
  • 2:44 - 2:47
    And so here I am,
    an 18-year-old young man,
  • 2:47 - 2:49
    got into the University
    of Southern California.
  • 2:49 - 2:51
I go in for my first internship interview
  • 2:51 - 2:54
    at the management company
    that manages Will Smith.
  • 2:54 - 2:56
    I'm literally about to get
    my foot in the door.
  • 2:56 - 2:58
At the end of the interview,
    the lady says,
  • 2:58 - 3:01
    "DeVon, is there anything else
    you want us to know?"
  • 3:01 - 3:03
    And right there,
God is speaking in my ear.
  • 3:03 - 3:05
He said, "Tell her about the Sabbath."
  • 3:05 - 3:06
    Now you must understand something.
  • 3:06 - 3:08
As a Christian, I grew up
    observing Sabbath:
  • 3:08 - 3:12
    Friday night sundown through
Saturday night sundown, I don't work.
  • 3:12 - 3:15
It's the day that I take off
    for observance, rest, and restoration.
  • 3:15 - 3:19
I'm there in the internship interview
about to get my foot in the door,
  • 3:19 - 3:19
    Hollywood,
  • 3:19 - 3:21
    and God says,
    "Tell her about the Sabbath."
  • 3:21 - 3:25
I said, "Lord, after I get the internship,
I'll tell her all about the Sabbath."
  • 3:25 - 3:26
    (Laughter)
  • 3:26 - 3:28
    You know how we are:
we love to get what we want,
  • 3:28 - 3:30
    and then we'll start moving
    the pieces around
  • 3:30 - 3:32
about what we can and cannot do.
  • 3:32 - 3:34
But after a moment of silence, I said,
  • 3:34 - 3:36
"Well, I can not take this internship
  • 3:36 - 3:39
if it requires me to work on the Sabbath."
  • 3:39 - 3:42
And it was quiet, just like it is now.
  • 3:42 - 3:44
And after a moment of silence,
  • 3:44 - 3:46
    she said, "DeVon, don't worry.
    We can work around that."
  • 3:46 - 3:48
What that taught me in that moment
  • 3:48 - 3:52
is that it's not about just the door
    of opportunity opening in your scene;
  • 3:53 - 3:55
it's about how you walk through the door.
  • 3:55 - 3:57
    Because every door that opens
  • 3:57 - 4:00
    that does not allow you
to fit your faith and who you are,
  • 4:00 - 4:02
I argue it is not a door to go through.
  • 4:02 - 4:03
    You have to understand
  • 4:03 - 4:05
that when you are walking in your path
  • 4:05 - 4:07
    and you are walking
in the movie of your life,
  • 4:07 - 4:10
    the scenes in your life
    will conform around you
  • 4:10 - 4:14
    if you have enough faith
to be exactly who God created you to be.
  • 4:14 - 4:18
I don't buy into this idea
that you have to compromise who you are,
  • 4:18 - 4:20
    compromise what you believe.
  • 4:20 - 4:22
    As a matter of fact,
be even more bold than who you are,
  • 4:22 - 4:24
more bold than who you believe,
  • 4:24 - 4:26
    because you are the hero
    of your own story,
  • 4:26 - 4:30
and if you don't believe your story -
guess what? - ain't nobody else going to.
  • 4:30 - 4:33
    C'mon, yeah. You give yourself
a round of applause on that one.
  • 4:33 - 4:35
    (Applause)
  • 4:37 - 4:38
    But here's the challenge:
  • 4:38 - 4:41
We get into scenes of our life
where we want to give up hope.
  • 4:41 - 4:43
    As a studio executive,
  • 4:43 - 4:46
one of the things I do
    is develop scripts into movies.
  • 4:46 - 4:48
    But there are some scripts
we develop for a very long time
  • 4:48 - 4:51
    and it never looks like
    it's going to get made,
  • 4:51 - 4:53
and we call this creative time
    "development hell."
  • 4:53 - 4:55
    Some of you have been
    in development hell,
  • 4:55 - 4:57
because you had an idea for your life.
  • 4:57 - 4:58
    You've been trying,
  • 4:58 - 5:01
    you've been pushing to allow
that idea to get into production,
  • 5:01 - 5:03
but you seem so far away from it
  • 5:03 - 5:05
    that you don't know
    what you're going to do.
  • 5:05 - 5:07
And in this moment, in development hell,
  • 5:07 - 5:09
    it is so tempting
  • 5:09 - 5:13
to give up on the very idea
    that brought you this far.
  • 5:14 - 5:16
You must realize that in development hell,
  • 5:16 - 5:20
when you're going through a time
where you're about to give up on yourself,
  • 5:20 - 5:21
    give up on your God,
  • 5:21 - 5:23
    give up on your friends,
    your dreams and your beliefs,
  • 5:23 - 5:26
this is when you have to go back
    to the original idea
  • 5:26 - 5:31
    that motivated your life,
and hold on to it, and don't give up.
  • 5:31 - 5:33
    Because you know why?
  • 5:33 - 5:35
    Because it is just like
    a scene of a movie.
  • 5:35 - 5:38
    There are some good scenes,
    there are some bad scenes,
  • 5:38 - 5:40
but if you keep walking forward,
  • 5:40 - 5:41
    guess what?
  • 5:41 - 5:43
    The hero always wins.
  • 5:43 - 5:45
And you know what makes the story good?
  • 5:45 - 5:48
    The conflict the hero faces.
  • 5:48 - 5:49
So when you go through bad scenes,
  • 5:49 - 5:53
that must mean you are getting ready
to be prepared to be victorious.
  • 5:53 - 5:55
    You must know
  • 5:55 - 5:58
that a bad scene with conflict
is not meant to take you down,
  • 5:58 - 6:02
but it's meant to actually bring
out the hero in you and build you up.
  • 6:02 - 6:06
If I could allow us to label this scene
    that we're in right now,
  • 6:06 - 6:07
    I would call it:
  • 6:07 - 6:09
"Locked up, but not locked down."
  • 6:09 - 6:10
    You must get this,
  • 6:10 - 6:13
    anyone who is in
    Ironwood Prison right now:
  • 6:13 - 6:15
    You might be locked up,
  • 6:15 - 6:19
but they don't have enough iron
in the universe to lock down your spirit.
  • 6:19 - 6:21
You have to keep your spirit up.
  • 6:21 - 6:23
    You have to keep believing.
  • 6:23 - 6:26
    You have to know
that what you see is possible.
  • 6:26 - 6:27
    (Applause)
  • 6:27 - 6:28
    Do you know why?
  • 6:28 - 6:32
Because in the movie of your life,
    you will succeed.
  • 6:32 - 6:37
    Don't let your current circumstance
    dictate your destiny,
  • 6:37 - 6:38
    because your destiny
  • 6:38 - 6:41
will be set up in the moment
    that you're in right now.
  • 6:41 - 6:43
    Yes, conflict will come,
  • 6:43 - 6:44
    but if you have faith,
  • 6:44 - 6:46
if you like who looks back at you
    in the mirror,
  • 6:46 - 6:49
    everybody that comes against you
going to have to step back and say,
  • 6:49 - 6:50
    "Wait a minute.
  • 6:50 - 6:52
We didn't know they had that much power.
  • 6:52 - 6:54
We might as well go ahead and let them out
  • 6:54 - 6:58
because there are other people out there
who need the hero that's within."
  • 6:58 - 7:01
When you're getting ready to give up
on your movie, step back and say,
  • 7:01 - 7:04
    "No, no, no, no, no.
    This movie is still good."
  • 7:04 - 7:08
    It just might take
a little longer than you thought.
  • 7:08 - 7:09
    Don't be impatient.
  • 7:09 - 7:11
Don't be getting so much anxiety.
  • 7:11 - 7:12
    Relax.
  • 7:13 - 7:16
Because you are going to win in the end.
  • 7:17 - 7:19
    Thus saith the Lord.
