A one-man orchestra of the imagination
-
0:03 - 0:05Well, there's lots to talk about,
-
0:05 - 0:08but I think I'm just going to play to start off.
-
0:09 - 0:19(Music)
-
2:54 - 2:57♫ When I wake up ♫
-
2:58 - 3:01♫ in the morning ♫
-
3:01 - 3:04♫ I pour the coffee ♫
-
3:05 - 3:08♫ I read the paper ♫
-
3:08 - 3:11♫ And then I slowly ♫
-
3:15 - 3:18♫ and so softly ♫
-
3:24 - 3:27♫ do the dishes ♫
-
3:29 - 3:32♫ So feed the fishes ♫
-
3:37 - 3:40♫ You sing me happy birthday ♫
-
3:45 - 3:48♫ Like it's gonna be ♫
-
3:48 - 3:52♫ your last day ♫
-
3:52 - 3:55♫ here on Earth ♫
-
5:18 - 5:27(Applause)
-
5:29 - 5:31All right.
-
5:31 - 5:33So, I wanted to do something special today.
-
5:33 - 5:36I want to debut a new song that I've been working on
-
5:36 - 5:39in the last five or six months.
-
5:39 - 5:41And there's few things more thrilling
-
5:41 - 5:43than playing a song
-
5:43 - 5:46for the first time in front of an audience,
-
5:46 - 5:48especially when it's half-finished.
-
5:48 - 5:50(Laughter)
-
5:50 - 5:52I'm kind of hoping some conversations here
-
5:52 - 5:54might help me finish it.
-
5:54 - 5:56Because it gets into all sorts
-
5:56 - 5:58of crazy realms.
-
5:58 - 6:00And so this is basically a song
-
6:00 - 6:02about loops,
-
6:02 - 6:04but not the kind of loops that I make up here.
-
6:04 - 6:06They're feedback loops.
-
6:06 - 6:08And in the audio world
-
6:08 - 6:11that's when the microphone gets too close
-
6:11 - 6:14to its sound source,
-
6:14 - 6:16and then it gets in this self-destructive loop
-
6:16 - 6:18that creates a very unpleasant sound.
-
6:18 - 6:20And I'm going to demonstrate for you.
-
6:20 - 6:22(Laughter)
-
6:23 - 6:26I'm not going to hurt you. Don't worry.
-
6:28 - 6:31♫ This is a loop, feedback loop ♫
-
6:31 - 6:34♫ This is a loop, feedback loop ♫
-
6:34 - 6:36♫ This is a loop, feedback loop ♫
-
6:36 - 6:39♫ This is a loop, feedback loop ♫
-
6:39 - 6:41♫ This is a loop, feedback loop ♫
-
6:41 - 6:44♫ This is a loop, feedback loop ♫
-
6:44 - 6:49♫ This is a -- (Feedback)
-
6:52 - 6:55All right. I don't know if that was necessary to demonstrate --
-
6:55 - 6:57(Laughter)
-
6:57 - 7:00-- but my point is it's the sound of self-destruction.
-
7:02 - 7:04And I've been thinking about
-
7:04 - 7:08how that applies across a whole spectrum of realms,
-
7:08 - 7:11from, say, the ecological, okay.
-
7:11 - 7:14There seems to be a rule in nature
-
7:14 - 7:17that if you get too close to where you came from,
-
7:17 - 7:19it gets ugly.
-
7:19 - 7:22So like, you can't feed cows their own brains
-
7:22 - 7:24or you get mad cow disease,
-
7:24 - 7:26and inbreeding and incest
-
7:26 - 7:28and, let's see,
-
7:28 - 7:30what's the other one?
-
7:30 - 7:32Biological -- there's autoimmune diseases,
-
7:32 - 7:34where the body attacks itself
-
7:34 - 7:36a little too overzealously
-
7:36 - 7:38and destroys the host,
-
7:38 - 7:40or the person.
-
7:43 - 7:46And then -- okay, this is where we get to the song --
-
7:46 - 7:49kind of bridges the gap to the emotional.
-
7:49 - 7:52Because although I've used scientific terms
-
7:52 - 7:54in songs,
-
7:54 - 7:57it's very difficult sometimes to make them lyrical.
-
7:57 - 7:59And there's some things
-
7:59 - 8:02you just don't need to have in songs.
-
8:03 - 8:05So I'm trying to bridge this gap
-
8:05 - 8:08between this idea and this melody.
-
8:08 - 8:11And so, I don't know if you've ever had this,
-
8:11 - 8:14but when I close my eyes sometimes
-
8:14 - 8:16and try to sleep,
-
8:16 - 8:19I can't stop thinking about my own eyes.
-
8:19 - 8:21And it's like your eyes
-
8:21 - 8:23start straining to see themselves.
-
8:23 - 8:25That's what it feels like to me.
-
8:25 - 8:27It's not pleasant.
-
8:27 - 8:29I'm sorry if I put that idea in your head.
-
8:29 - 8:31(Laughter)
-
8:31 - 8:33It's impossible, of course, for your eyes to see themselves,
-
8:33 - 8:36but they seem to be trying.
-
8:36 - 8:39So that's getting a little more closer to a personal experience.
-
8:40 - 8:42Or ears being able to hear themselves --
-
8:42 - 8:44it's just impossible.
-
8:44 - 8:46That's the thing.
-
8:46 - 8:49So, I've been working on this song
-
8:49 - 8:52that mentions these things
-
8:52 - 8:54and then also imagines
-
8:54 - 8:56a person who's been so successful
-
8:56 - 8:59at defending themselves from heartbreak
-
8:59 - 9:02that they're left to do the deed themselves,
-
9:02 - 9:04if that's possible.
-
9:04 - 9:06And that's what the song is asking.
-
9:08 - 9:10All right.
-
9:10 - 9:12It doesn't have a name yet.
-
9:12 - 9:22(Music)
-
11:08 - 11:11♫ Go ahead and congratulate yourself ♫
-
11:11 - 11:15♫ Give yourself a hand, the hand is your hand ♫
-
11:15 - 11:18♫ And the eye that eyes itself is your eye ♫
-
11:18 - 11:22♫ And the ear that hears itself is near ♫
-
11:22 - 11:25♫ 'Cause it's your ear, oh oh ♫
-
11:25 - 11:28♫ You've done the impossible now ♫
-
11:28 - 11:31♫ Took yourself apart ♫
-
11:32 - 11:35♫ You made yourself invulnerable ♫
-
11:35 - 11:38♫ No one can break your heart ♫
-
11:39 - 11:42♫ So you wear it out ♫
-
11:43 - 11:46♫ And you wring it out ♫
-
11:46 - 11:49♫ And you wear it out ♫
-
11:49 - 11:51♫ And you break it yourself ♫
-
11:51 - 11:54♫ Breaking your own, break it yourself ♫
-
11:54 - 11:58♫ Breaking your own, break it yourself ♫
-
11:58 - 12:01♫ Breaking your own ♫
-
12:14 - 12:18(Applause)
-
12:18 - 12:20Thanks.
-
12:20 - 12:25(Applause)
-
12:25 - 12:27All right.
-
12:27 - 12:30It's kind of cool. Songwriters can sort of get away with murder.
-
12:30 - 12:33You can throw out crazy theories
-
12:33 - 12:36and not have to back it up with data
-
12:36 - 12:39or graphs or research.
-
12:39 - 12:42But, you know, I think reckless curiosity
-
12:42 - 12:45would be what the world needs now,
-
12:45 - 12:47just a little bit.
-
12:47 - 12:51(Applause)
-
12:51 - 12:53I'm going to finish up with a song of mine
-
12:53 - 12:55called "Weather Systems."
-
12:55 - 13:05(Music)
-
13:12 - 13:15♫ Quiet ♫
-
13:17 - 13:21♫ Quiet down, she said ♫
-
13:21 - 13:24♫ Speak into the back of his head ♫
-
13:24 - 13:28♫ On the edge of the bed, I can see your blood flow ♫
-
13:28 - 13:32♫ I can see your ♫
-
13:32 - 13:35♫ cells grow ♫
-
13:39 - 13:42♫ Hold still awhile ♫
-
13:42 - 13:45♫ Don't spill the wine ♫
-
13:45 - 13:48♫ I can see it all from here ♫
-
13:48 - 13:50♫ I can see ♫
-
13:50 - 13:52♫ oh, I ♫
-
13:52 - 13:55♫ I can see ♫
-
13:59 - 14:02♫ weather systems ♫
-
14:02 - 14:05♫ of the world ♫
-
14:15 - 14:18♫ Weather systems ♫
-
14:18 - 14:21♫ of the world ♫
-
14:52 - 14:55♫ Some things you say ♫
-
14:55 - 14:59♫ are not for sale ♫
-
14:59 - 15:02♫ I would hold it where ♫
-
15:02 - 15:06♫ our free agents of some substance are ♫
-
15:08 - 15:11♫ scared ♫
-
15:15 - 15:18♫ Hold still a while ♫
-
15:18 - 15:21♫ Don't spill the wine ♫
-
15:22 - 15:25♫ I can see it all from here ♫
-
15:25 - 15:27♫ I can see ♫
-
15:27 - 15:29♫ oh, I ♫
-
15:29 - 15:32♫ I can see ♫
-
15:34 - 15:40♫ weather systems of the world ♫
-
17:27 - 17:31♫ Weather systems ♫
-
17:32 - 17:37♫ of the world ♫
-
18:41 - 18:43Thanks.
