How to BREAK FREE from the SPIRIT of RELIGION! | Brother Chris Teaching

  • 0:00 - 0:10
A religious mindset attempts to replicate results at the price of process.
  • 0:10 - 0:17
The religious mindset substitutes inspiration with imitation.
  • 0:17 - 0:22
    It replaces revelation with repetition.
  • 0:22 - 0:30
Wow, people of God! Grace and peace to you all in Jesus’ mighty name.
  • 0:30 - 0:32
    Thank You, Lord.
  • 0:32 - 0:40
You're all very welcome to this Partner Service here at the God's Heart TV Studio.
  • 0:40 - 0:46
I want us to begin this time together
    in a moment of prayer.
  • 0:46 - 0:48
    Let us pray right now.
  • 0:48 - 1:02
Lord Jesus Christ, we are connected here at this moment unto Your glory.
  • 1:02 - 1:13
    Help us to remain spiritually
    and mentally alert
  • 1:13 - 1:20
    in this time of fellowship,
    meditation and prayer.
  • 1:20 - 1:29
Manifest Your strength in our weaknesses.
  • 1:29 - 1:35
In Jesus’ mighty name we pray.
  • 1:35 - 1:43
And the people of God said, “Amen!”
  • 1:43 - 1:49
I have a word of encouragement for you today, a word of exhortation
  • 1:49 - 1:57
about the dangers of a religious mindset.
  • 1:57 - 2:02
And this is going to be taken from a story
    in the Old Testament actually.
  • 2:02 - 2:11
It's contained in two passages -
in 2 Samuel 5 and also in 1 Chronicles 14.
  • 2:11 - 2:16
But for today's message, I'm going to read the account from 1 Chronicles 14.
  • 2:16 - 2:24
So please, I would encourage you to turn with me in your Bibles to this portion -
  • 2:24 - 2:36
    1 Chronicles 14:8-17.
  • 2:36 - 2:40
    And once again, I'm going
    to read the story and
  • 2:40 - 2:52
    really highlight the dangers
    of a religious mindset.
  • 2:52 - 2:57
It is one thing to start in the Spirit,
  • 2:57 - 3:03
but it is another thing to stay in the Spirit.
  • 3:03 - 3:08
As we're preparing to read the Scripture, you can just say that to your neighbour,
  • 3:08 - 3:10
or speak it out right now:
  • 3:10 - 3:19
    “Don’t just start in the Spirit;
    stay in the Spirit.”
  • 3:19 - 3:24
Let's keep that in our hearts
    as we read this portion.
  • 3:24 - 3:28
As we read the verses, I'm going to be emphasising some lessons,
  • 3:28 - 3:29
practical lessons of life from this account.
  • 3:29 - 3:31
    This is about King David.
  • 3:31 - 3:42
1 Chronicles 14:8 - “Now when the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king
  • 3:42 - 3:51
over all Israel, all the Philistines
went up to search for David.
  • 3:51 - 3:55
And David heard of it and
    went out against them.”
  • 3:55 - 3:57
Okay, let's just pause the story here.
  • 3:57 - 4:00
    Because there's already
    a very big lesson here.
  • 4:00 - 4:03
I want you to think about this.
  • 4:03 - 4:16
God had been equipping David in private long before anointing him in public.
  • 4:16 - 4:30
He was being prepared spiritually long before the battle broke out physically.
  • 4:30 - 4:38
    Because anointing attracts attacks.
  • 4:38 - 4:46
Don't be surprised when blessings are accompanied by battles
  • 4:46 - 4:55
to remind us just how much we need God.
  • 4:55 - 5:05
    Ammunition selected by your enemy
is a clue to his fear of you.
  • 5:05 - 5:08
    That’s a deep statement.
  • 5:08 - 5:12
I'm quoting Prophet T.B. Joshua there.
    I'll say it again.
  • 5:12 - 5:27
    Ammunition selected by your enemy
is a clue to his fear of you.
  • 5:27 - 5:34
The devil does not waste attention on those who don't threaten his kingdom.
  • 5:34 - 5:39
Why am I pausing to emphasise
    this point, children of God,
  • 5:39 - 5:42
before we even get into the
    main focus of this story?
  • 5:42 - 5:47
This is a point of reflection because
  • 5:47 - 5:59
there are many of us today who fall
into the trap of attributing delay
  • 5:59 - 6:06
to the blockage of the devil,
rather than to the building of God.
  • 6:06 - 6:13
What many of us see as delay - ‘I'm praying for this, but it's not yet come to pass.
  • 6:13 - 6:16
    I'm expecting this in my career;
    it’s not yet happened.
  • 6:16 - 6:17
    I'm expecting this to happen.
  • 6:17 - 6:22
I'm seeking God for this, but I have not seen the visible results.’
  • 6:22 - 6:32
What you see as delay is God building you, not the devil blocking you - as a Christian.
  • 6:32 - 6:40
It's common for people today to attribute their delay or their disappointment
  • 6:40 - 6:43
to the work of the devil -
    ‘The devil has blocked me.
  • 6:43 - 6:48
The devil is behind this. The devil has stopped me from fulfilling my destiny.’
  • 6:48 - 6:51
Whereas rather than the devil blocking you,
  • 6:51 - 6:58
it is actually God building you,
    preparing you, equipping you.
  • 6:58 - 7:06
But if you are so focused thinking about
what is the cause of this blockage,
  • 7:06 - 7:09
you may miss the process of building.
  • 7:09 - 7:13
    Why must God build us?
    Why must God equip us?
  • 7:13 - 7:22
Because blessings are accompanied by battles. Anointing attracts attack.
  • 7:22 - 7:27
    God's favour draws man's envy.
  • 7:27 - 7:30
That's why we must be equipped.
  • 7:30 - 7:38
The problem today is when, out of impatience or man's ambition,
  • 7:38 - 7:48
we take actions to jump ahead of God's time or try to skip ahead of God's process.
  • 7:48 - 7:53
But in your skipping, you miss equipping.
  • 7:53 - 8:01
If you have skipped the building,
then you are not equipped for the battle.
  • 8:01 - 8:09
What many of us are passing through today is the process of God building us.
  • 8:09 - 8:14
You can say that to your neighbour right now or speak it out if you are alone.
  • 8:14 - 8:19
“I am being built, not blocked.
  • 8:19 - 8:24
I am being strengthened, not stopped.”
  • 8:24 - 8:29
Say it again, “I am being built, not blocked.
  • 8:29 - 8:34
I am being strengthened, not stopped.
  • 8:34 - 8:38
    My delay is not denial.”
  • 8:38 - 8:48
Just as God was equipping David in private before anointing him in public,
  • 8:48 - 8:54
as a child of God, what you are going through is part of the process
  • 8:54 - 8:57
    of building your character.
  • 8:57 - 9:01
    A word of warning:
  • 9:01 - 9:13
If you rise by gift, you may fall by character.
  • 9:13 - 9:16
Or let me put it even clearer.
  • 9:16 - 9:25
If you only rise by gift, you will
    surely fall by character.
  • 9:25 - 9:34
Don't get carried away by your gift to a place your character cannot carry you.
  • 9:34 - 9:39
Your gift can lead to greatness of man.
  • 9:39 - 9:43
    But it takes character to
    have greatness of God.
  • 9:43 - 9:46
    Your gift can entertain men.
  • 9:46 - 9:50
It takes character to entertain angels.
  • 9:50 - 9:56
This is just a pause in this story
    to think about this point.
  • 9:56 - 10:06
The moment the Philistines learned that David had been anointed, the attack started.
  • 10:06 - 10:12
    Don't be surprised when
    what you are praying for
  • 10:12 - 10:17
    attracts the attention of what
    you are praying against.
  • 10:17 - 10:21
    God must build your character.
  • 10:21 - 10:28
Because what is being built in private will equip you to face the attacks in public.
  • 10:28 - 10:31
    Anointing attracts attack.
  • 10:31 - 10:35
    Let's read on - this story: 1 Chronicles 14:9.
  • 10:35 - 10:45
“Then the Philistines went and made a raid on the Valley of Rephaim.
  • 10:45 - 10:50
And David inquired of God...” -
    this is very important.
  • 10:50 - 10:56
Before anything else, before setting up his military tactics, strategy and plans -
  • 10:56 - 11:01
‘How are we going to face the Philistines’ - his first source was God.
  • 11:01 - 11:07
    “David inquired of God, saying,
‘Shall I go up against the Philistines?
  • 11:07 - 11:09
Will You deliver them into my hand?’
  • 11:09 - 11:17
The Lord said to him, ‘Go up, for I will deliver them into your hand.’”
  • 11:17 - 11:19
    Thank You, Jesus.
  • 11:19 - 11:25
“So they went up...” - in accordance with that instruction, that direction.
  • 11:25 - 11:32
“They went up to Baal Perazim,
    and David defeated them there.
  • 11:32 - 11:38
Then David said, ‘God has broken through my enemies by my hand
  • 11:38 - 11:40
    like a breakthrough of water.’”
  • 11:40 - 11:44
He did not say, ‘I have defeated my enemies by my hands.
  • 11:44 - 11:47
My tactics have defeated these enemies.
  • 11:47 - 11:51
    My superior military strength
    has defeated these enemies.
  • 11:51 - 11:57
The skills and gifts of my men and myself have defeated these enemies.’
  • 11:57 - 12:01
Even though they, of course, will have played a part in the victory.
  • 12:01 - 12:02
But David did not say that.
  • 12:02 - 12:13
He said, “‘God has broken through my enemies by my hand like a breakthrough of water.’
  • 12:13 - 12:18
    Therefore they called the name
of that place Baal Perazim” -
  • 12:18 - 12:22
    which literally means,
    ‘Master of breakthroughs’.
  • 12:22 - 12:28
1 Chronicles 14:12 - “And when they left their gods there, David gave a commandment,
  • 12:28 - 12:33
and they were burned with fire.”
  • 12:33 - 12:37
There's a lot to think about here.
    Let’s pause a moment.
  • 12:37 - 12:45
The evidence of the genuineness of David's relationship with God
  • 12:45 - 12:53
    was shown in his attitude
    before battle and after victory.
  • 12:53 - 13:00
Before the battle, David sought God's face.
  • 13:00 - 13:06
After the victory, David glorified His name.
  • 13:06 - 13:13
The intensity of the battle and the immensity of the victory
  • 13:13 - 13:24
did not take his focus from God
    or his dependence on God.
  • 13:24 - 13:31
This is a very big lesson for all of us today.
  • 13:31 - 13:35
When a battle comes, who do you seek?
  • 13:35 - 13:37
    Whose opinion do you seek?
  • 13:37 - 13:41
    Whose direction do you seek?
  • 13:41 - 13:45
    Whose counsel do you seek?
  • 13:45 - 13:50
To whom do you entrust your heart
    when the battle comes?
  • 13:50 - 13:53
Look, at this time, we know we are talking about a physical battle.
  • 13:53 - 14:00
I am, of course, referring here to
the battles that life can bring.
  • 14:00 - 14:06
Not just physical - emotional battles, financial battles, marital challenges,
  • 14:06 - 14:15
challenges in health, work, career -
    just name it. Battles.
  • 14:15 - 14:18
    Who do you seek before?
  • 14:18 - 14:22
When you know a battle is coming,
    who do you seek?
  • 14:22 - 14:28
    And when victory comes,
who do you ascribe the glory to?
  • 14:28 - 14:33
    The evidence of David's
    relationship with God -
  • 14:33 - 14:37
how God had equipped him in private before anointing him in public -
  • 14:37 - 14:42
was his attitude before battle and after victory.
  • 14:42 - 14:45
Also, I want you to take note.
  • 14:45 - 14:50
He did not attribute the victory to his strength.
  • 14:50 - 14:54
He did not attribute the victory to his skills.
  • 14:54 - 15:02
He did not attribute the victory to the strength of his men or himself.
  • 15:02 - 15:06
He took no credit for the victory.
  • 15:06 - 15:12
    The spoils of success did
    not spoil his spirit.
  • 15:12 - 15:17
    His conquest did not
    give rise to compromise.
  • 15:17 - 15:22
That is why, immediately after the victory, he glorified God.
  • 15:22 - 15:29
But not only that, he burned the idols rather than keeping them as trophies.
  • 15:29 - 15:36
Some of us are busy toying with
what is meant to be burning.
  • 15:36 - 15:41
    David knew the source
    of his victory was God.
  • 15:41 - 15:49
So that is why he didn't give any space to the devil after the victory
  • 15:49 - 15:56
by collecting those idols as trophies.
  • 15:56 - 16:02
    He acknowledged God,
    glorified God for the victory,
  • 16:02 - 16:06
did away with any form of idolatry,
  • 16:06 - 16:12
and the result of this is reflected
    in what happens next.
  • 16:12 - 16:14
    So let's read on - 1 Chronicles 14:13.
  • 16:14 - 16:21
    “Then the Philistines once again
made a raid on the valley.”
  • 16:21 - 16:23
People of God, this is an interesting story.
  • 16:23 - 16:26
    They had just been defeated.
  • 16:26 - 16:32
David had won the victory by the hand of God after seeking God's opinion.
  • 16:32 - 16:39
    But the Philistines attacked
    the very same area.
  • 16:39 - 16:47
Don't think that victory today automatically assures you of victory tomorrow.
  • 16:47 - 16:50
    That you overcame today
  • 16:50 - 16:55
    does not automatically qualify
    you to overcome tomorrow.
  • 16:55 - 16:57
God gives grace for each day.
  • 16:57 - 17:01
You must depend on His grace each day.
  • 17:01 - 17:06
I hope you follow what I'm saying here, children of God.
  • 17:06 - 17:09
They attacked the very same area.
  • 17:09 - 17:14
That an area of your life is attacked and by the grace of God you overcome
  • 17:14 - 17:19
does not mean you are automatically immune from attacks in that same area.
  • 17:19 - 17:25
If David had attributed the success to himself,
  • 17:25 - 17:30
or he was busy toying with
    the trophies of past victories,
  • 17:30 - 17:34
he would not have had the
    sensitivity to recognise
  • 17:34 - 17:38
    the needed revelation for
    the present decision.
  • 17:38 - 17:40
Because if we read what happens,
  • 17:40 - 17:48
David did not just assume that the tactic he used last time would work this time.
  • 17:48 - 17:54
He didn't just conclude, ‘Well, the Philistines attacked here. God said I should do this.
  • 17:54 - 17:59
And so let me repeat the same process and the same victory will ensue.’
  • 17:59 - 18:01
    No! What did he do?
  • 18:01 - 18:10
Let's read 1 Chronicles 14:14 - “Therefore, David again inquired of God...”
  • 18:10 - 18:21
People of God, don't think that the approach of yesterday will work today.
  • 18:21 - 18:26
You need to depend on God daily.
  • 18:26 - 18:31
This is the danger of a religious mindset
  • 18:31 - 18:43
because a religious mindset attempts to replicate results at the price of process.
  • 18:43 - 18:49
‘We did it like this. It worked.
We will continue to do it like this.’
  • 18:49 - 18:56
The religious mindset substitutes inspiration with imitation.
  • 18:56 - 19:02
    It replaces revelation with repetition.
  • 19:02 - 19:06
    David did not repeat the
    same approach to battle.
  • 19:06 - 19:11
He repeated the same approach to God. Take note of this.
  • 19:11 - 19:14
He still ran to God for guidance.
  • 19:14 - 19:19
He still ran to God for wisdom
of how to manage this battle.
  • 19:19 - 19:21
    He still sought God’s opinion.
  • 19:21 - 19:27
He didn't just conclude that the guidance he received in the last battle
  • 19:27 - 19:30
    would automatically be the same
    for the next battle.
  • 19:30 - 19:36
In fact, if we read on, God gave him a different tactic. Let’s read.
  • 19:36 - 19:41
“Therefore David inquired again of God...”
  • 19:41 - 19:46
Did God say to him, ‘I have already told you what to do. Follow the same path...’?
  • 19:46 - 19:55
No. God said to him, ‘You shall
    not go up after them.’
  • 19:55 - 20:01
In the first battle, the instruction from the Spirit of God was to go up.
  • 20:01 - 20:04
    If David had succumbed
    to a religious mindset,
  • 20:04 - 20:10
he would have taken the same approach and expected the same result.
  • 20:10 - 20:14
But what did he do? He sought God again.
  • 20:14 - 20:18
    And this time “God said,
    ‘You shall not go up after them;
  • 20:18 - 20:27
circle around them, and come upon them in front of the mulberry trees.
  • 20:27 - 20:33
And it shall be, when you hear a sound of marching in the tops of the mulberry trees,
  • 20:33 - 20:39
then you shall go out to battle,
for God has gone out before you
  • 20:39 - 20:44
to strike the camp of the Philistines.’
  • 20:44 - 20:50
So David did as God commanded him,
  • 20:50 - 20:57
and they drove back the army of the Philistines from Gibeon as far as Gezer.
  • 20:57 - 21:01
    Then the fame of David
    went out into all lands,
  • 21:01 - 21:06
    and the Lord brought the
fear of him upon all nations.”
  • 21:06 - 21:10
People of God, I hope you
    understand the lesson
  • 21:10 - 21:14
I'm bringing forth from this passage.
  • 21:14 - 21:19
It’s a practical lesson for each
and every one of us today.
  • 21:19 - 21:37
Look, the religious mindset subtly seeks to disconnect your daily dependence on God.
  • 21:37 - 21:43
If David had been overwhelmed by the spoils of success
  • 21:43 - 21:47
or busy toying with the trophies
    of his past victories,
  • 21:47 - 21:54
or attributing the results to his own efforts, rather than God's grace,
  • 21:54 - 22:02
he would not have been sensitive to seek God's direction when the next battle came,
  • 22:02 - 22:06
    even though it was in
    the same battleground.
  • 22:06 - 22:09
What am I saying here, people of God?
  • 22:09 - 22:15
We must be careful of anything
    that tries to interfere
  • 22:15 - 22:20
    with our total dependence
    on God for everything.
  • 22:20 - 22:25
We need God each and every moment.
  • 22:25 - 22:30
That you are in the right
    place with God today
  • 22:30 - 22:36
does not give you the space
    to relax in the spirit.
  • 22:36 - 22:41
If you relax in the flesh,
    don't relax in the spirit.
  • 22:41 - 22:46
Victory should not give room to complacency.
  • 22:46 - 22:53
Your victories today should not breed complacency tomorrow.
  • 22:53 - 22:58
‘Everything was fine. We overcame this.
    I can relax.’
  • 22:58 - 23:02
If you relax in the flesh,
    don't relent in the spirit.
  • 23:02 - 23:06
You need God each and every day.
  • 23:06 - 23:10
This is the danger of the religious mindset.
  • 23:10 - 23:13
We reduce the things of God to a formula
  • 23:13 - 23:18
    that we can apply irrespective
of the state of our hearts.
  • 23:18 - 23:25
The religious mindset does not recognise the importance of the heart.
  • 23:25 - 23:33
That's why we can just follow a plan of man, even if initially it was inspired by God.
  • 23:33 - 23:38
We now turn it into a blueprint that we adopt irrespective of the heart.
  • 23:38 - 23:43
You may look at this message and say, ‘Brother Chris, can you be more practical?
  • 23:43 - 23:47
How do I apply what you're talking about?
    I don't think I have a religious mindset.
  • 23:47 - 23:52
    Be more practical with what
    we are talking about here.’
  • 23:52 - 23:58
If reading the Bible just becomes a routine...
  • 23:58 - 24:03
Every day I must read my verse,
    read my chapter.
  • 24:03 - 24:16
If prayer just becomes a ritual -
I say the words but I don't mean them -
  • 24:16 - 24:24
then the heart is no longer required
and the Spirit can no longer inspire.
  • 24:24 - 24:29
Christianity is a relationship, not a religion.
  • 24:29 - 24:35
    Relationship lies in the heart.
  • 24:35 - 24:45
Without the help of the Holy Spirit, your prayers can just impress man, not reach God.
  • 24:45 - 24:49
Without the help of the Holy Spirit,
  • 24:49 - 24:54
you will read the Bible just to be informed, not to be transformed.
  • 24:54 - 24:58
    You may read the Bible.
The Bible will not read you.
  • 24:58 - 25:05
Without the help of the Holy Spirit,
our fasting is just a hunger strike.
  • 25:05 - 25:15
You must be careful to not fall
    into a religious mindset
  • 25:15 - 25:23
that sets the mind or the mode
    above the heart.
  • 25:23 - 25:30
    We just follow tradition,
    convention, ceremony.
  • 25:30 - 25:34
This is a word that calls for self-examination.
  • 25:34 - 25:39
    Even in churches today,
when we go to the house of God,
  • 25:39 - 25:43
    from the perspective of you
    that are attending,
  • 25:43 - 25:46
are you just going because it's traditional?
  • 25:46 - 25:53
‘On Sunday, I must go to church’ -
even if your heart is not in church.
  • 25:53 - 25:54
    That's religious.
  • 25:54 - 25:57
We may tick the box that
    we have attended church.
  • 25:57 - 26:01
We will not truly receive what
    will change our lives.
  • 26:01 - 26:08
Even from the perspective of those leading church, ministries, the work of the Lord -
  • 26:08 - 26:16
    if everything is pre-planned,
the heart is no longer required.
  • 26:16 - 26:22
If the script is already written,
    the heart can be missing.
  • 26:22 - 26:28
If the script is present, don't be
    surprised the heart is absent.
  • 26:28 - 26:30
    It can become a ceremony.
  • 26:30 - 26:34
If everything is prepared before in a script,
  • 26:34 - 26:38
    what's the difference between
    a service and a show?
  • 26:38 - 26:44
I'm not in any way discouraging godly routine or regularly attending church.
  • 26:44 - 26:50
But that something is regular does not mean it should become religious,
  • 26:50 - 26:59
where we just go through the form, the motions without taking care of the heart.
  • 26:59 - 27:02
We need inspiration from the Holy Spirit, not imitation of man.
  • 27:02 - 27:07
We need revelation from the Holy Spirit,
not repetition of what has worked in the past.
  • 27:07 - 27:13
    We need relationship with God,
    not religion.
  • 27:13 - 27:17
That is a message I take
    from this story of David.
  • 27:17 - 27:22
This is a reflection of David's
    relationship with God.
  • 27:22 - 27:26
He sought God before the first battle.
  • 27:26 - 27:29
He glorified God after the victory.
  • 27:29 - 27:33
    And when another battle came,
    he didn't automatically conclude
  • 27:33 - 27:35
that the same approach would work.
  • 27:35 - 27:43
He still went back to seek God, and this time the approach was given differently.
  • 27:43 - 27:48
Because David knew the military tactics were not the source of his victory.
  • 27:48 - 27:51
It was the Source of those tactics.
  • 27:51 - 27:54
It was the Source - God.
  • 27:54 - 28:00
    The source behind it determines
    the force behind it.
  • 28:00 - 28:14
This is why we need God
    every day, every moment.
  • 28:14 - 28:21
That you took a wrong step in the past does not disqualify you,
  • 28:21 - 28:26
and that you took the right step in the past does not qualify you.
  • 28:26 - 28:30
Many who are first will be last,
    and last will be first.
  • 28:30 - 28:35
There is grace for each day.
  • 28:35 - 28:43
That I was right with God yesterday does not mean it’s guaranteed I am right with God today
  • 28:43 - 28:46
because each day has its own battles.
  • 28:46 - 28:48
Each day has its own challenges.
  • 28:48 - 28:50
Each day has its own trials.
  • 28:50 - 28:54
That's why I need God each and every day.
  • 28:54 - 29:06
The religious mindset is so dangerous because it uses seemingly godly things
  • 29:06 - 29:15
    while disconnecting our daily
    dependence on the Source, God.
  • 29:15 - 29:17
As I said at the beginning of this message, it’s a word of encouragement,
  • 29:17 - 29:24
but it’s a word of exhortation, a word that calls for reflection, people of God.
  • 29:24 - 29:27
It’s not about the way you overcome.
  • 29:27 - 29:30
It's about the One who overcomes.
  • 29:30 - 29:32
    It's all about Jesus.
  • 29:32 - 29:41
We must be very careful of anything that attempts, whether directly or indirectly,
  • 29:41 - 29:49
to cut off our dependence on God, our communion with God and our duty to God.
  • 29:49 - 29:52
    That's the religious mindset.
  • 29:52 - 29:55
‘This approach worked. Let's stick with it.’
  • 29:55 - 30:01
Your approach to battle may change.
Your approach to God will not.
  • 30:01 - 30:08
Approach God and let His Spirit direct your approach. That's the answer.
  • 30:08 - 30:12
So people of God, this is
    the message I wanted to
  • 30:12 - 30:19
share with everyone in today's meeting - the danger of the religious mindset.
  • 30:19 - 30:23
    We must break free from
    the spirit of religion.
  • 30:23 - 30:28
    How? Daily dependence on God.
  • 30:28 - 30:37
    Daily dependence on God requires
daily settlement of the heart -
  • 30:37 - 30:42
    daily checking your heart,
  • 30:42 - 30:48
so that we are not toying with things
we are meant to be burning.
  • 30:48 - 30:54
David gave the instruction to burn those idols.
  • 30:54 - 30:58
Don't try to build bridges with what is meant to be burned.
  • 30:58 - 31:05
If your right hand causes you to sin,
    cut it off (Matthew 5:30).
  • 31:05 - 31:09
Some of us are taking trophies
    of past victories as if,
  • 31:09 - 31:12
‘This will help me to understand
    the world better.’
  • 31:12 - 31:17
It will help the world to overcome you,
    not you understand it.
  • 31:17 - 31:20
    I will bring this message
to a close at this point.
  • 31:20 - 31:24
I know there is a lot of food for
    thought in this message,
  • 31:24 - 31:30
and we are going to have an opportunity now for questions, comments.
  • 31:30 - 31:34
If you have something from today's message you'd like to ask about,
  • 31:34 - 31:38
or you have a lesson that you would like to share with fellow people of God
  • 31:38 - 31:42
here in God's presence, this is an opportunity for you to do so.
  • 31:42 - 31:55
And I pray that the message you have received today will sink deep into your hearts
  • 31:55 - 32:05
to root out every religious mindset,
    in Jesus’ mighty name. Amen.
  • 32:10 - 32:11
Thank you so much, Brother Chris.
  • 32:11 - 32:16
    This sermon really touched me.
  • 32:16 - 32:27
Because I think I've fallen in that rut of depending on past victories.
  • 32:27 - 32:31
And I would say that in the past I would probably call them principles.
  • 32:31 - 32:38
But my question to you is this -
  • 32:38 - 32:44
when we find ourselves in that state,
  • 32:44 - 32:52
what is the best way that
    we can settle our hearts?
  • 32:52 - 32:55
You said that we first of all
    need to settle our hearts.
  • 32:55 - 32:59
What's the best way that we can do that?
  • 32:59 - 33:03
Okay. Thank you very much, brother.
  • 33:03 - 33:09
All of us can know - if we are sincere.
  • 33:09 - 33:14
    You can know when your
    heart is not settled.
  • 33:14 - 33:17
Because no one knows you better
    than you know yourself.
  • 33:17 - 33:23
    You may attempt to attribute
it to other factors or forces,
  • 33:23 - 33:25
    but no one knows your
    heart better than you.
  • 33:25 - 33:27
If your heart is not settled,
    your heart is disturbed,
  • 33:27 - 33:31
first of all, we have to identify what is causing that disturbance.
  • 33:31 - 33:35
    What is behind that ‘unsettlement’?
  • 33:35 - 33:47
And if we are to be direct, the thing that disturbs our spirits as Christians is sin,
  • 33:47 - 33:53
    in whichever way, shape or
    form it manifests itself.
  • 33:53 - 34:00
If we recognise that the source of our disturbance spiritually is sin,
  • 34:00 - 34:05
    we must equally recognise
    that the solution is spiritual.
  • 34:05 - 34:11
    Sometimes we try to mask
    our disturbance by
  • 34:11 - 34:16
    engaging ourselves in other activities
to try and just forget about it
  • 34:16 - 34:22
or take our mind away from it or
try to postpone dealing with it.
  • 34:22 - 34:25
    But the answer is spiritual.
  • 34:25 - 34:35
And the answer is not too far from repentance and seeking God’s face for forgiveness.
  • 34:35 - 34:38
    That's the answer, my brother.
    There's no formula here.
  • 34:38 - 34:41
That's the answer. No one is perfect.
  • 34:41 - 34:47
That's why we depend on the Blood Jesus Christ shed on the cross of Calvary for us.
  • 34:47 - 34:52
But I think one of the big problems people have today is that they delay
  • 34:52 - 34:55
in settling the issues of their hearts
  • 34:55 - 35:02
because they're not truly ready to deal with the sin that has caused the disturbance.
  • 35:02 - 35:05
Maybe because there's a fleeting enjoyment of that sin,
  • 35:05 - 35:10
or maybe because they have not been alert to recognise what it truly is.
  • 35:10 - 35:19
I so often talk about, for example, this issue of unforgiveness, bitterness.
  • 35:19 - 35:22
It's such an easy trap to fall into
    because you can be deceived
  • 35:22 - 35:26
into thinking you are justified in harbouring it because of the wrong done to you.
  • 35:26 - 35:29
    But what you don't realise
    is that by harbouring it,
  • 35:29 - 35:35
you are violating the very command Jesus Christ gave us to release forgiveness.
  • 35:35 - 35:40
So even though it is the wrong done to you, not that you've knowingly done wrong
  • 35:40 - 35:42
    to someone else, but the
    wrong done to you -
  • 35:42 - 35:47
by harbouring it, you're going to cause a
    disturbance in your heart.
  • 35:47 - 35:52
So that's an example of something that we often are not alert to recognise.
  • 35:52 - 35:58
We don't realise that that's the cause of our disturbance because we are clouded by
  • 35:58 - 36:00
the pain of the wrong done to us,
  • 36:00 - 36:06
or the feeling that such a response is justified because of what has happened.
  • 36:06 - 36:11
So the light of God's Word opens our eyes to where we need to repent
  • 36:11 - 36:16
and reconcile with God, and that is
why we hear a message like this.
  • 36:16 - 36:23
You hear the Word of God and it brings you to the place of reflection, examination.
  • 36:23 - 36:26
And the beautiful thing is that when we turn to God with all of our hearts,
  • 36:26 - 36:33
He’s ready and willing to welcome us,
to forgive us and the past is over.
  • 36:33 - 36:38
That's why I said the wrong steps you took yesterday don't disqualify you.
  • 36:38 - 36:42
Satan tries to use guilt from the past
  • 36:42 - 36:46
to paralyse us in the present from
    taking the rightful actions.
  • 36:46 - 36:50
But if you hear a message like this today and right here, right now,
  • 36:50 - 36:56
identify where you have gone wrong, ask God for forgiveness, reconnect with Him -
  • 36:56 - 37:00
the heart can be settled and
    you continue your journey.
  • 37:00 - 37:05
    But if you delay settlement,
    then you are building disturbance.
  • 37:05 - 37:08
It's only going to build up.
  • 37:08 - 37:14
It's not going to be solved by trying
to cover it with hard work or
  • 37:14 - 37:19
    recreational activities or
    schemes of blaming.
  • 37:19 - 37:21
    It's not going to work.
  • 37:21 - 37:23
You have to get right with God.
  • 37:23 - 37:28
And to conclude, brother, I really can't emphasise this enough.
  • 37:28 - 37:32
My brothers and sisters in Christ,
    I cannot emphasise this enough.
  • 37:32 - 37:36
We are living in a world
    where there is no shortage
  • 37:36 - 37:42
    of temptations and distractions everywhere.
  • 37:42 - 37:45
    And this flesh is weak.
    We are weak.
  • 37:45 - 37:53
    So we must take actions
    actively to help us spiritually.
  • 37:53 - 37:59
Have a place in your house
    set aside for prayer.
  • 37:59 - 38:04
When your heart is troubled, go there.
  • 38:04 - 38:08
When your heart is disturbed, go there.
  • 38:08 - 38:11
Go on your knees before God.
  • 38:11 - 38:17
I tell you, if you seek God sincerely, you will identify what is causing that trouble.
  • 38:17 - 38:22
And as you bring it before God's presence, the peace and joy will be restored.
  • 38:22 - 38:29
But so many times something disturbs us and everything around us
  • 38:29 - 38:33
    contributes to that disturbance,
rather than helping us to settle it.
  • 38:33 - 38:36
Sometimes we need to set aside a place.
  • 38:36 - 38:40
    Look, I talked today about
    the danger of religion.
  • 38:40 - 38:45
I am not saying, ‘If I go to that prayer room, automatically my heart will be settled.’
  • 38:45 - 38:50
I'm saying find a place on the outside that will help you reconnect on the inside.
  • 38:50 - 38:58
Have a place which you can set aside
for prayer. Life is full of distractions.
  • 38:58 - 39:01
    Life is full of temptations.
  • 39:01 - 39:10
There's no shortage of things trying to shift our focus, take us away from God.
  • 39:10 - 39:13
    But you know yourself.
    You know your heart.
  • 39:13 - 39:18
    Everyone listening right now -
    we know our hearts.
  • 39:18 - 39:23
You can know if something's disturbing you.
  • 39:23 - 39:26
You can know if your spirit is not settled.
  • 39:26 - 39:33
And if you are sincere and go deep,
the cause of that disturbance is sin.
  • 39:33 - 39:39
But the Blood of Jesus is enough.
    Run to Him.
  • 39:39 - 39:40
To quote Prophet T.B. Joshua again,
  • 39:40 - 39:46
“If you make a mistake, as we all do,
don't run from God; run to Him.”
  • 39:46 - 39:52
    And that mistake will become
    a tool to teach you,
  • 39:52 - 39:56
to mature you, to improve you
as far as you run to Him.
  • 39:56 - 39:59
But that's the issue - running to Him.
  • 39:59 - 40:04
That's the lesson from David -
    he ran back to God.
  • 40:04 - 40:08
In the victory, he ran to God.
In the battle, he ran to God.
  • 40:08 - 40:14
When the battle happened the second time, he ran back to God.
  • 40:14 - 40:19
It was the consistency of his running to God that was the source of his victory,
  • 40:19 - 40:22
not the strategy that God gave him.
  • 40:26 - 40:33
Blessings! My name is Fabiola from Honduras living in Kentucky, USA.
  • 40:33 - 40:38
Thank you very much for this message, which has really filled my heart.
  • 40:38 - 40:43
    What happens when we go
    to God as David did...
  • 40:43 - 40:48
Because David asked God what he had to do and God’s answer was clear.
  • 40:48 - 40:53
The first time He said, ‘Go’ and the
second time He said, ‘Don’t go’.
  • 40:53 - 40:59
So, the problem I have is that I ask God
but I don’t hear His answer,
  • 40:59 - 41:03
or I cannot distinguish the answer
    He has to my question.
  • 41:03 - 41:06
I’m going to give a simple example.
  • 41:06 - 41:09
I have been living here in
    Kentucky for four years
  • 41:09 - 41:13
and I desire with all my heart
to go to live in Florida.
  • 41:13 - 41:18
It seems like it is something simple
but I want to ask God if it’s His will
  • 41:18 - 41:20
but I don’t hear what His answer is.
  • 41:20 - 41:22
    This is the first question:
  • 41:22 - 41:26
How can I recognise God’s voice
    when He answers me?
  • 41:26 - 41:32
The very first question you asked
    is a very common question.
  • 41:32 - 41:36
And at its root it is - how do
I hear the voice of God?
  • 41:36 - 41:41
Because it is easy to read this portion and say, ‘Well, it was very easy for David.
  • 41:41 - 41:47
David just inquired of God. The instruction came. He acted on it.
  • 41:47 - 41:49
Why is it not so easy for me?’
  • 41:49 - 41:54
Some of us would just like to pray and then we would love a voice from the heavens
  • 41:54 - 41:58
to come and say, ‘Go this way’
    or ‘Don't go this way.’
  • 41:58 - 42:07
And I think it's important to emphasise that this is why we talk about relationship.
  • 42:07 - 42:21
Because the closer you draw to God, the clearer His voice becomes in your spirit.
  • 42:21 - 42:28
God is able to speak to us in multiple ways.
  • 42:28 - 42:36
We cannot restrict God in the way
    He speaks to His people.
  • 42:36 - 42:41
Yes, I used the example that people would like to hear a voice.
  • 42:41 - 42:47
Some people - you can hear
a voice audibly. It can happen.
  • 42:47 - 42:56
Some people may receive a message from God in a dream, a revelation, a vision.
  • 42:56 - 43:02
Sometimes God may send someone to you with a message that you needed to hear
  • 43:02 - 43:06
at that moment - God can
    use someone to convey.
  • 43:06 - 43:14
Sometimes the circumstances of life are themselves a message to us.
  • 43:14 - 43:24
Often, it’s the still, small voice of God’s Spirit in our hearts.
  • 43:24 - 43:29
What I can say to you, sister,
    is very clearly this.
  • 43:29 - 43:35
    Although we cannot determine
    how God speaks to us
  • 43:35 - 43:40
or the way God will choose to
    answer us when we pray,
  • 43:40 - 43:47
what we can do is take care of the heart
    to whom God will speak.
  • 43:47 - 43:53
Prayer is not just about talking.
  • 43:53 - 43:56
    It’s a two way conversation.
  • 43:56 - 44:03
It's about talking to God, listening to God not with these ears, but with the heart.
  • 44:03 - 44:07
If I go back to the answer
    I gave my brother earlier,
  • 44:07 - 44:13
the best way to position yourself to hear from God is to settle your spirit.
  • 44:13 - 44:21
If your heart is disturbed, your heart is troubled, your heart is weighed down,
  • 44:21 - 44:27
you will likely be insensitive to what
    His Spirit is telling you.
  • 44:27 - 44:36
This is why we reduce to desiring for our ears to hear the audible voice.
  • 44:36 - 44:40
Because we want to bypass the
    process of settling our spirits.
  • 44:40 - 44:47
Or we want to go to a man of God and just receive a prophecy - ‘You must do ABC.’
  • 44:47 - 44:53
God can speak through His servants.
    Prophecy is real.
  • 44:53 - 44:57
    God can direct people
    through prophetic words.
  • 44:57 - 45:01
But we should not see prophecy
    as an avenue
  • 45:01 - 45:05
    to bypass God's processing
    of settling our hearts.
  • 45:05 - 45:10
I can just go to church and receive a prophecy that I should do this.
  • 45:10 - 45:14
Even if God speaks to you in prophecy, there must be a confirmation,
  • 45:14 - 45:19
which is why you must settle your own heart, settle your own spirit.
  • 45:19 - 45:26
I would love to say to you today, sister,
‘It's as easy as following this formula.
  • 45:26 - 45:29
Do this and you'll hear the voice of God.’
  • 45:29 - 45:34
Look, the ways of God are
    higher than our ways.
  • 45:34 - 45:37
God sees the bigger picture always.
  • 45:37 - 45:41
And the way in which he communicates
    to us as His children
  • 45:41 - 45:44
can often be mysterious to these senses.
  • 45:44 - 45:51
But what I can tell you, God does not leave us without direction.
  • 45:51 - 45:54
If you seek Him with all your heart,
    you will find Him.
  • 45:54 - 45:58
He does not leave us without guidance.
  • 45:58 - 46:02
If you seek Him with all your heart,
    you will find it.
  • 46:02 - 46:06
You focus on the seeking and
    the direction will come.
  • 46:06 - 46:10
You focus on caring for your heart and
  • 46:10 - 46:16
sometimes events beyond your control will be supernaturally orchestrated
  • 46:16 - 46:20
from above to take you to where
    He wants you to be.
  • 46:20 - 46:22
But take care of your heart.
  • 46:26 - 46:29
    So my question, I think
    it's pretty straightforward,
  • 46:29 - 46:37
but for me, sometimes it tends to be a challenge in the practical sense.
  • 46:37 - 46:46
So my question is, how do you depend on God in a practical way, on a day-to-day basis?
  • 46:46 - 46:55
And then what example do you have of how you do this yourself daily? Thank you.
  • 46:55 - 47:02
All of us need to examine ourselves - ‘Okay, I hear this message.
  • 47:02 - 47:11
How does this apply in my life, situation, family, marriage, workplace - everything?’
  • 47:11 - 47:17
I think it all comes down to
    what we prioritise in life.
  • 47:17 - 47:22
If you prioritise your relationship with God,
  • 47:22 - 47:27
then you will structure your daily schedule around time with Him.
  • 47:27 - 47:32
It doesn't mean you neglect your other assignments and responsibilities.
  • 47:32 - 47:34
    Of course not!
  • 47:34 - 47:40
I am sure you are a working man and I believe brother, you have a family, right?
  • 47:40 - 47:44
You have a divine responsibility to care for your family when you're at work,
  • 47:44 - 47:47
as you give your best at your work
    for the glory of God.
  • 47:47 - 47:52
These are not things that you neglect,
    but you must structure
  • 47:52 - 48:00
your time management around the principle of your relationship with God first.
  • 48:00 - 48:05
    In other words, time with
    God is non-negotiable.
  • 48:05 - 48:13
It’s not like I can adjust my way of life to manage without investing time with God.
  • 48:13 - 48:18
    It's essential. Now, how does
    that work out for you?
  • 48:18 - 48:23
You may say, ‘Okay, because of prioritising my relationship with God,
  • 48:23 - 48:28
I need to get up earlier in the morning and have some time of prayer
  • 48:28 - 48:30
or time to read the Scriptures.’
  • 48:30 - 48:36
Maybe it means in certain areas recognising there will be some sacrifices -
  • 48:36 - 48:40
time I would ordinarily spend perhaps
    in leisure or recreation,
  • 48:40 - 48:44
I rather want to give that time
    for the things of God.
  • 48:44 - 48:51
That’s why I can't begin to share with you today specifically for you - ‘This is how to do it.’
  • 48:51 - 48:54
You asked me the question - you should give an example of your own life.
  • 48:54 - 49:02
And for myself, I am, by God's grace,
    in full time ministry.
  • 49:02 - 49:07
    Everything about me and
    everything surrounding me
  • 49:07 - 49:11
are things that redirect me to God, which is an incredible privilege.
  • 49:11 - 49:17
But you can't compartmentalise your life to think, ‘Well, I have my time at work,
  • 49:17 - 49:19
which is just for making money,
  • 49:19 - 49:22
and then I have my time with family, which is to enjoy fellowship with family.
  • 49:22 - 49:24
Then I have my time for God.’
  • 49:24 - 49:30
No, our relationship with God influences and impacts everything about that.
  • 49:30 - 49:32
    So when my relationship
    with God is my priority,
  • 49:32 - 49:38
how I navigate marital issues is informed by my spiritual principles.
  • 49:38 - 49:43
As husband and wife, you have a clash, marital misunderstanding.
  • 49:43 - 49:46
    The evidence of what
    you prioritise in your life
  • 49:46 - 49:48
is reflected in how you react
    to that misunderstanding.
  • 49:48 - 49:52
So if my relationship with God is
the most important thing to me,
  • 49:52 - 49:57
I cannot afford to remain in a state of marital disagreement.
  • 49:57 - 50:04
So even if I have to lower my pride, I must do so for the sake of settling that issue
  • 50:04 - 50:06
so my heart can be right with God.
  • 50:06 - 50:14
Oftentimes, marital misunderstandings are prolonged because we, at that moment,
  • 50:14 - 50:22
are more concerned about proving ourselves before man rather than being right with God.
  • 50:22 - 50:30
So if my relationship with God is my priority, love God above all else,
  • 50:30 - 50:36
everything else flows from that principle.
  • 50:36 - 50:40
So I could talk about time with God, reading the Bible, prayer.
  • 50:40 - 50:43
These are not things that should just be seasonal or circumstantial.
  • 50:43 - 50:44
    They should be daily.
  • 50:44 - 50:47
But even that, it’s not - ‘Well, I’ve got my...’
  • 50:47 - 50:49
That's why I talked about a religious mindset.
  • 50:49 - 50:53
    ‘I’ve read my five verses.
Let me get on with my life.
  • 50:53 - 50:56
    I have offered my prayer.
Now let’s get back to business.’
  • 50:56 - 51:00
No! What I read in those verses
    guides me through life.
  • 51:00 - 51:07
What I pray to God guides me
    in business, family, marriage,
  • 51:07 - 51:14
guides me in how I respond when I take a wrong step as we all do, how I handle mistakes.
  • 51:14 - 51:16
So there is no formula, my brother.
  • 51:16 - 51:20
But I would still - you know,
you asked me to be personal.
  • 51:20 - 51:25
I really encourage everyone to have a place set aside for prayer.
  • 51:25 - 51:27
    I can't emphasise it enough.
  • 51:27 - 51:31
On a personal note, when I wake up in the morning and before I go to bed at night,
  • 51:31 - 51:36
I will go to a place of prayer.
  • 51:36 - 51:40
Whether it's for one hour, whether it's for one minute - it’s not about length.
  • 51:40 - 51:46
    It’s about making sure our
    heart is right with God.
  • 51:46 - 51:51
That does not depend on being in a physical area. Our heart is the prayer room.
  • 51:51 - 51:56
    But sometimes setting aside a
    place can be very beneficial,
  • 51:56 - 52:00
so you are surrounded by things
    that remind you of God.
  • 52:00 - 52:08
Even if the heart disconnects - when you walk by and see it, you are reminded.
  • 52:08 - 52:15
So I hope my brother, you take
    a message from this.
  • 52:15 - 52:19
So let me even ask you.
    This is a good opportunity.
  • 52:19 - 52:28
I want to ask you, do you have a place in your home set aside for prayer if you can tell me?
  • 52:28 - 52:32
So, I pray in the living room.
  • 52:32 - 52:38
I try to be consistent waking up in the morning, but sometimes it's a challenge.
  • 52:38 - 52:42
And the reason why I was also
    asking this question was -
  • 52:42 - 52:44
when the Bible says pray without ceasing...
  • 52:44 - 52:47
I think there was also a message where T.B. Joshua was saying
  • 52:47 - 52:49
you need to pray in your heart all the time.
  • 52:49 - 52:54
So, sometimes I pray in my car.
I pray when I wake up.
  • 52:54 - 52:58
    Sometimes, I forget.
I get carried away by work.
  • 52:58 - 53:03
    So, that's why I was asking -
how do you keep that engaged?
  • 53:03 - 53:07
    But I think your answer
    has been very insightful.
  • 53:07 - 53:09
    Thank you, my brother.
  • 53:09 - 53:14
Look, living room is for living. Dining room is for eating. Bedroom is for sleeping.
  • 53:14 - 53:18
    Find another place for prayer.
    Don’t combine it.
  • 53:18 - 53:22
    I understand that not everyone
    may have the rooms available,
  • 53:22 - 53:28
but what I mean is - have a place set aside, not a place that you combine.
  • 53:28 - 53:30
    Today it’s like this;
tomorrow it’s like that - no.
  • 53:30 - 53:36
Even if it's a space within a room, have it dedicated - if you need to corner it off.
  • 53:36 - 53:40
Even if it's a small space - ‘Oh, this is an altar. This is a place for God.’
  • 53:40 - 53:45
Not that you go there and pray today but tomorrow you are relaxing, watching something.
  • 53:45 - 53:51
Don't combine the two. Set it aside - even if it’s just a small part of the room.
  • 53:51 - 53:54
    It’s a principle. It’s important.
  • 53:54 - 53:59
And the question you are asking about - how do we pray all the time in our hearts?
  • 53:59 - 54:03
As I said, the closer we draw to God,
    the more we prioritise Him,
  • 54:03 - 54:09
the more time we spend with Him,
    you will find that spontaneously,
  • 54:09 - 54:16
your spirit is engaging in godly things without your mind even being conscious of it.
  • 54:16 - 54:20
It’s a process. It doesn't happen overnight. That's why we have to persevere.
  • 54:20 - 54:26
We have to press in, and we have to disconnect from those things that contaminate us.
  • 54:26 - 54:32
The problem we have today is that we easily give room to things that contaminate our spirits.
  • 54:32 - 54:35
And then we wonder why our
    spirits begin to disconnect.
  • 54:35 - 54:41
Look, it can reach a point where your mind can be at work solving a problem
  • 54:41 - 54:43
or engaging in a conversation with someone,
  • 54:43 - 54:47
and at the same time, there's a song
    going on in your heart.
  • 54:47 - 54:50
There's a prayer going on in your heart.
  • 54:50 - 54:55
Your brain may not even be conscious of it but your spirit is at work.
  • 54:55 - 55:02
Just like when you sleep, this body is dead, but the heart is active, alive.
  • 55:02 - 55:06
At the beginning, it may be
    your mind being conscious
  • 55:06 - 55:10
and repeating words or meditating consciously on words
  • 55:10 - 55:13
but a time will come where
it just becomes part of you.
  • 55:13 - 55:18
    Your spirit unconsciously goes to
    God for wisdom, for guidance.
  • 55:18 - 55:21
But we have to be careful of what contaminates our spirits.
  • 55:21 - 55:26
    What are we watching?
What are we giving attention to?
  • 55:26 - 55:28
What are we feeding our spirits with?
  • 55:32 - 55:34
    Grace and peace to everyone.
  • 55:34 - 55:40
My name is Patricia and I am speaking with you from the United States of America.
  • 55:40 - 55:43
And I'm in the state of Minnesota.
  • 55:43 - 55:48
Thank you. So I have two questions.
  • 55:48 - 55:55
So one of them is in regard to the Scripture that we read today.
  • 55:55 - 56:05
So I want to ask - if King David did
not hear a clear message from God,
  • 56:05 - 56:11
telling him to either move forward
    or not to move forward,
  • 56:11 - 56:19
he had been living right with God -
would he change his prayer point?
  • 56:19 - 56:24
For example, if he didn't hear that he should go and fight the Philistines,
  • 56:24 - 56:27
would he have to change his prayer point?
  • 56:27 - 56:33
Or would he just assume - ‘Since I’m living right with God, I’m good to go.
  • 56:33 - 56:41
Silence is not denial. I can go,
overtake them and win the battle.’
  • 56:41 - 56:50
So that’s one question and then,
    my second question is -
  • 56:50 - 57:00
for example, I'm praying about something and
I hear from God, ‘Soon, you will have this’,
  • 57:00 - 57:05
does it mean that in the meantime while
I wait to hear from Him,
  • 57:05 - 57:09
can I go ahead and do other things?
  • 57:09 - 57:16
Or is He saying, ‘Soon but I want you to remain in prayer. Don’t move anyhow.’
  • 57:16 - 57:19
So I was wondering if you
    could help me with that.
  • 57:19 - 57:28
Ok, thank you, sister. So, the key principle here is the fact that David,
  • 57:28 - 57:34
before concluding on a course of action, chose to seek God and approach God.
  • 57:34 - 57:39
Now, if we begin to say, ‘What
    would happen in Scenario A
  • 57:39 - 57:42
if he did not hear from God or
there was not a clearcut message
  • 57:42 - 57:44
or what would happen in Scenario B?’
  • 57:44 - 57:49
There's so many different scenarios that you could talk about.
  • 57:49 - 57:53
That's why we need spiritual sensitivity because situations change.
  • 57:53 - 57:56
We need wisdom for each situation,
which is why we need God.
  • 57:56 - 58:02
So I don't think it would be particularly beneficial to the general message
  • 58:02 - 58:06
if we began to say, ‘Well, if it was Scenario B where he did not do this,
  • 58:06 - 58:07
    David would have done that’,
  • 58:07 - 58:11
because if an answer does not come in the way you expect,
  • 58:11 - 58:14
then there will be another way in which God speaks to you.
  • 58:14 - 58:18
I really believe that God will not leave us without direction.
  • 58:18 - 58:23
It's not a formula that says, ‘Right, if you don't get Answer A, then let's look for B,
  • 58:23 - 58:26
and if it’s B, that means you should do this.’
  • 58:26 - 58:30
No. That's why we talk about
    relationship with God.
  • 58:30 - 58:36
So it's not like when the battle comes -
‘Let me quickly bring out my book.
  • 58:36 - 58:40
Ok, let’s try A. If that doesn’t work,
    then we go to B.
  • 58:40 - 58:43
If the answer is B, then we try C’ -
    like it’s a chart.
  • 58:43 - 58:47
    No, it's about the overflow
    of relationship with God.
  • 58:47 - 58:51
That's why I talked about David being equipped before this battle.
  • 58:51 - 58:55
The attitude he had in the battle was a reflection of the relationship he had
  • 58:55 - 58:58
before the battle - relationship with God.
  • 58:58 - 59:01
So we need to prioritise caring
    for that relationship.
  • 59:01 - 59:04
Okay, maybe this brings us to
    the second question you had.
  • 59:04 - 59:10
And I want to quote something I said in a recent message that waiting on the Lord
  • 59:10 - 59:15
    is not a justification for
    laziness or mismanagement.
  • 59:15 - 59:18
If you are seeking something from God and it's not yet come,
  • 59:18 - 59:21
and you have that prompting of the Spirit that it’s going to come soon,
  • 59:21 - 59:24
it doesn't mean you sit back,
    just relax and say,
  • 59:24 - 59:26
‘Well, when that soon comes, it will come’.
  • 59:26 - 59:30
You have to make use of whatever
    is in your hands today
  • 59:30 - 59:34
to do what is right and work hard towards what you believe God has put in your heart.
  • 59:34 - 59:41
So, in your particular example, although we don't know specifically the area you're referring to,
  • 59:41 - 59:43
what I would just say very simply is this -
  • 59:43 - 59:48
satan will do anything to try and stop us from acting faith in the present.
  • 59:48 - 59:50
Waiting should not be an idle time.
  • 59:50 - 59:56
Waiting is an active time because waiting is also part of preparing.
  • 59:56 - 59:59
God is building us, but we have to pay attention to the lesson.
  • 59:59 - 60:04
We all know if you go to school but you don't pay attention, you're not going to pass.
  • 60:04 - 60:06
You have to pay attention to the lesson.
  • 60:06 - 60:11
So the period of waiting may be more about paying attention to what God is teaching you.
  • 60:11 - 60:15
Maybe there's an area of your character that needs to be adjusted.
  • 60:15 - 60:18
Maybe there's a bad habit that currently you're engaged in -
  • 60:18 - 60:22
    that ‘soon’ will come when
    you deal with that habit.
  • 60:22 - 60:28
But it's all about recognising, when it comes to the things of God,
  • 60:28 - 60:30
    we cannot bypass His process.
  • 60:30 - 60:34
And as I said, God is more interested in our character than our gift.
  • 60:34 - 60:39
So if God sees you are not yet ready for what He's prepared to release to you,
  • 60:39 - 60:45
He will rather wait until you are ready spiritually and your character is equipped.
  • 60:45 - 60:51
So your focus should be on that, rather than saying, ‘Well, if it's not yet there, let's jump ahead.’
  • 60:51 - 60:54
    That's why I said we shouldn’t
    jump ahead of God.
  • 60:54 - 60:56
    Vision waits for God's time.
  • 60:56 - 61:00
Ambition does not wait for God's time. Vision waits for God's time.
  • 61:00 - 61:06
That is why we have to make sure that in our period of waiting, we are not mismanaging.
  • 61:06 - 61:11
We are not being idle. We are not just expecting it to fall from Heaven
  • 61:11 - 61:14
into our plates without playing our part.
  • 61:14 - 61:18
So thank you very much, sister.
    I hope you understand.
  • 61:18 - 61:20
    Thank you.
