What causes bad breath? - Mel Rosenberg
-
0:07 - 0:13There is a curse that has plagued humanity
since ancient times. -
0:13 - 0:16The Greeks fought it by chewing
aromatic resins, -
0:16 - 0:19while the Chinese resorted to egg shells.
-
0:19 - 0:21In the ancient Jewish Talmud,
-
0:21 - 0:25it's even considered
legal grounds for divorce. -
0:25 - 0:32This horrible scourge is halitosis,
otherwise known as bad breath. -
0:32 - 0:36But what causes it,
and why is it so universally terrifying? -
0:36 - 0:39Well, think of some of the worst
odors you can imagine, -
0:39 - 0:44like garbage, feces or rotting meat.
-
0:44 - 0:48All of these smells come from the activity
of microorganisms, -
0:48 - 0:50particularly bacteria,
-
0:50 - 0:52and, as disgusting as it may sound,
-
0:52 - 0:59similar bacteria live in the moisture-rich
environment of your mouth. -
0:59 - 1:00Don't panic.
-
1:00 - 1:03The presence of bacteria in your body
is not only normal, -
1:03 - 1:06it's actually vital
for all sorts of things, -
1:06 - 1:09like digestion and disease prevention.
-
1:09 - 1:13But like all living things,
bacteria need to eat. -
1:13 - 1:16The bacteria in your mouth
feed off of mucus, -
1:16 - 1:17food remnants,
-
1:17 - 1:20and dead tissue cells.
-
1:20 - 1:23In order to absorb nutrients
through their cell membranes, -
1:23 - 1:27they must break down the organic matter
into much smaller molecules. -
1:27 - 1:32For example, they'll break proteins
into their component amino acids -
1:32 - 1:36and then break those down even further
into various compounds. -
1:36 - 1:39Some of the foul-smelling
byproducts of these reactions, -
1:39 - 1:42such as hydrogen sulfide and cadaverine,
-
1:42 - 1:44escape into the air
-
1:44 - 1:48and waft their way
towards unsuspecting noses. -
1:48 - 1:52Our sensitivity to these odors
and interpretation of them as bad smells -
1:52 - 1:57may be an evolutionary mechanism
warning us of rotten food -
1:57 - 1:59and the presence of disease.
-
1:59 - 2:02Smell is one of our most intimate
and primal senses, -
2:02 - 2:06playing a huge role
in our attraction to potential mates. -
2:06 - 2:11In one poll, 59% of men and 70% of women
-
2:11 - 2:15said they wouldn't go on a date
with someone who has bad breath, -
2:15 - 2:17which may be why Americans alone
-
2:17 - 2:22spend $1 billion a year
on various breath products. -
2:22 - 2:25Fortunately, most bad breath
is easily treated. -
2:25 - 2:29The worst smelling byproducts come from
gram-negative bacteria -
2:29 - 2:32that live in the spaces
between gums and teeth -
2:32 - 2:34and on the back of the tongue.
-
2:34 - 2:36By brushing and flossing our teeth,
-
2:36 - 2:39using antibacterial mouthwash at bedtime,
-
2:39 - 2:43gently cleaning the back of the tongue
with a plastic scraper -
2:43 - 2:46and even just eating a healthy breakfast,
-
2:46 - 2:50we can remove many of these bacteria
and their food sources. -
2:50 - 2:53In some cases,
these measures may not be enough -
2:53 - 2:57due to dental problems,
nasal conditions, or rarer ailments, -
2:57 - 3:01such as liver disease
and uncontrolled diabetes. -
3:01 - 3:04Behaviors like smoking
and excessive alcohol consumption -
3:04 - 3:07also have a very recognizable odor.
-
3:07 - 3:09Regardless of cause,
-
3:09 - 3:12the bad smell almost
always originates in the mouth -
3:12 - 3:16and not the stomach
or elsewhere in the body. -
3:16 - 3:17But one of the biggest challenges lies
-
3:17 - 3:22in actually determining
how our breath smells in the first place, -
3:22 - 3:24and it's unclear why.
-
3:24 - 3:26It may be that
we're too acclimatized -
3:26 - 3:29to the smell inside
our own mouths to judge it. -
3:29 - 3:32And methods like cupping your hands
over your mouth, -
3:32 - 3:36or licking and smelling your wrist
don't work perfectly either. -
3:36 - 3:39One study showed
that even when people do this, -
3:39 - 3:41they tend to rate the smell subjectively
-
3:41 - 3:45according to how bad
they thought it was going to be. -
3:45 - 3:48But there's one simple,
if socially difficult, -
3:48 - 3:51way of finding out how your breath smells:
-
3:51 - 3:54just take a deep breath and ask a friend.
