How to Spot Fake News - FactCheck.org

  • 0:01 - 0:02
    Fake news is nothing new.
  • 0:02 - 0:05
But bogus stories can reach more people
  • 0:05 - 0:07
    more quickly via social media
    than would good
  • 0:07 - 0:10
    old-fashioned viral emails could
    accomplish in years past.
  • 0:10 - 0:13
A lot of those viral claims aren't "news"
    at all,
  • 0:13 - 0:18
but fiction, satire and efforts to fool readers into thinking they're for real.
  • 0:18 - 0:21
Here are some strategies to shield yourself from fake news.
  • 0:21 - 0:24
Are you familiar with the source? Is it legitimate?
  • 0:24 - 0:26
Has it been reliable in the past?
  • 0:26 - 0:28
If not, you may not want to trust it.
  • 0:30 - 0:32
If a provocative headline drew your attention,
  • 0:32 - 0:34
read a little further before you decide
  • 0:34 - 0:36
to pass along the shocking information.
  • 0:36 - 0:38
    Even in legitimate news stories,
  • 0:38 - 0:40
the headline doesn't always tell the whole story.
  • 0:40 - 0:44
But fake news, particularly efforts to be satirical,
  • 0:44 - 0:47
can include several revealing signs in the text.
  • 0:47 - 0:51
One fake story even attributed a quote to a dolphin.
  • 0:51 - 0:52
    If that had been real,
  • 0:52 - 0:54
you could argue they buried the lede.
  • 0:54 - 0:56
Another telltale sign of a fake story
  • 0:56 - 0:59
is often the byline - if there even is one.
  • 0:59 - 1:01
And in some cases, the authors are not real.
  • 1:01 - 1:01
One story was credited to a "doctor" who
  • 1:04 - 1:08
    won "fourteen Peabody awards and
    a handful of Pulitzer Prizes."
