Why does your voice change as you get older?
-
0:07 - 0:09In the mid-16th century,
-
0:09 - 0:12Italians were captivated by a type
of male singer -
0:12 - 0:14whose incredible range contained notes
-
0:14 - 0:17previously thought impossible
for adult men. -
0:17 - 0:20However, this gift came at a high price.
-
0:20 - 0:22To prevent their voices from breaking,
-
0:22 - 0:25these singers had been
castrated before puberty, -
0:25 - 0:29halting the hormonal processes
that would deepen their voices. -
0:29 - 0:34Known as castrati, their light, angelic
voices were renowned throughout Europe, -
0:34 - 0:39until the cruel procedure that created
them was outlawed in the 1800s. -
0:39 - 0:43Though stunting vocal growth can produce
an extraordinary musical range, -
0:43 - 0:48naturally developing voices
are already capable of incredible variety. -
0:48 - 0:55And as we age, our bodies undergo two
major changes which explore that range. -
0:55 - 1:01So how exactly does our voice box work,
and what causes these shifts in speech? -
1:01 - 1:06The specific sound of a speaking voice is
the result of many anatomical variables, -
1:06 - 1:10but it’s mostly determined by the age
and health of our vocal cords -
1:10 - 1:12and the size of our larynxes.
-
1:12 - 1:16The larynx is a complex system
of muscle and cartilage -
1:16 - 1:19that supports and moves the vocal cords,
-
1:19 - 1:23or, as they’re more accurately known,
the vocal folds. -
1:23 - 1:26Strung between the thyroid
and arytenoid cartilages, -
1:26 - 1:32these two muscles form an elastic curtain
that opens and shuts across the trachea, -
1:32 - 1:35the tube that carries
air through the throat. -
1:35 - 1:37The folds are apart when we’re breathing,
-
1:37 - 1:39but when we speak, they slam shut.
-
1:39 - 1:42Our lungs push air
against the closed folds, -
1:42 - 1:46blowing them open and vibrating
the tissue to produce sound. -
1:46 - 1:50Unlike the deliberate focus required
for playing an external instrument, -
1:50 - 1:54we effortlessly change notes as we speak.
-
1:54 - 1:55By pushing air faster or slower,
-
1:55 - 1:59we change the frequency and amplitude
of these vibrations, -
1:59 - 2:03which respectively translate to the pitch
and volume of our voices. -
2:03 - 2:08Rapid and small vibrations create
high-pitched, quiet tones, -
2:08 - 2:13while slow, large vibrations
produce deep, bellowing rumbles. -
2:13 - 2:16Finally, by moving the laryngeal muscles
between the cartilages, -
2:16 - 2:19we can stretch and contract those folds
-
2:19 - 2:23to intuitively play
our internal instruments. -
2:23 - 2:26This process is the same from
your first words to your last, -
2:26 - 2:29but as you age, your larynx ages too.
-
2:29 - 2:33During puberty,
the first major shift starts, -
2:33 - 2:35as your voice begins to deepen.
-
2:35 - 2:39This happens when
your larynx grows in size, -
2:39 - 2:44elongating the vocal folds and
opening up more room for them to vibrate. -
2:44 - 2:47These longer folds have slower,
larger vibrations, -
2:47 - 2:51which result in a lower baseline pitch.
-
2:51 - 2:53This growth is especially dramatic
in many males, -
2:53 - 2:57whose high testosterone levels
lead first to voice cracks, -
2:57 - 3:00and then to deeper, more booming voices,
-
3:00 - 3:04and laryngeal protrusions
called Adam’s apples. -
3:04 - 3:07Another vocal development during puberty
-
3:07 - 3:10occurs when the homogenous tissue
covering the folds -
3:10 - 3:14specializes into three distinct
functional layers: -
3:14 - 3:15a central muscle,
-
3:15 - 3:20a layer of stiff collagen wrapped
in stretchy elastin fibers, -
3:20 - 3:23and an outer layer of mucus membrane.
-
3:23 - 3:26These layers add nuance
and depth to the voice, -
3:26 - 3:31giving it a distinct timbre that sets it
apart from its pre-pubescent tones. -
3:31 - 3:36After puberty, most people’s voices remain
more or less the same -
3:36 - 3:38for about 50 years.
-
3:38 - 3:40But we all use our voices differently,
-
3:40 - 3:44and eventually we experience the
symptoms associated with aging larynxes, -
3:44 - 3:46known as presbyphonia.
-
3:46 - 3:49First, the collagen in our folds stiffens
-
3:49 - 3:53and the surrounding elastin fibers
atrophy and decay. -
3:53 - 3:58This decreased flexibility increases
the pitch of older voices. -
3:58 - 4:01But for people who have experienced
the hormonal effects of menopause, -
4:01 - 4:07the higher pitch is countered
and outweighed by swollen vocal folds. -
4:07 - 4:13The folds' increased mass slows their
vibrations, resulting in deeper voices. -
4:13 - 4:15All these symptoms are further complicated
-
4:15 - 4:19by having fewer healthy
laryngeal nerve endings, -
4:19 - 4:24which reduces precise muscle control
and causes breathy or rough voices. -
4:24 - 4:28Ultimately, these anatomical changes
are just a few of the factors -
4:28 - 4:30that can affect your voice.
-
4:30 - 4:32But when kept in good condition,
-
4:32 - 4:35your voice box
is a finely tuned instrument, -
4:35 - 4:37capable of operatic arias,
-
4:37 - 4:38moody monologues,
-
4:38 - 4:40and stirring speeches.

- Why does your voice change as you get older?
- Speaker:
- Shaylin A. Schundler
- Description:
-
As we age, our voices shift in pitch and quality from childhood to adulthood. These changes are largely due to the physical changes of our vocal folds. How does this small but important part of our bodies develop and how do these changes affect the way we sound? [TED-Ed Animation by Andrew Foerster & Nick Counter]
