7 beliefs that can silence women -- and how to unlearn them

  • Not Synced
    Moderator: "A girl should
    be seen, not heard."
  • Not Synced
    "Be quiet." Or, "Chup."
  • Not Synced
    These words are often used
to silence girls right from childhood,
  • Not Synced
    well into adulthood,
  • Not Synced
    and deep into old age.
  • Not Synced
I'm proud to introduce our next speaker,
a true champion of the female voice,
  • Not Synced
    an advisor on poverty,
  • Not Synced
gender and development for the World Bank,
  • Not Synced
    United Nations, and several NGOs
in India and the world over.
  • Not Synced
She calls herself a cultural detective.
  • Not Synced
Let's raise our voices to welcome
    renowned social scientist and author
  • Not Synced
    Deepa Narayan.
  • Not Synced
    (Music)
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    Deepa Narayan: The goal
    of every loving parent
  • Not Synced
    is to raise good girls,
  • Not Synced
    but what parents actually do
  • Not Synced
    is to constrain, confine
    and crush their girls.
  • Not Synced
So as they crush their girls,
  • Not Synced
    they prepare them for abuse.
  • Not Synced
    This would be so devastating
  • Not Synced
that no parent would be able to bear it,
  • Not Synced
    so it's disguised.
  • Not Synced
In India, we call this "adjusting."
  • Not Synced
I'm sure you've heard the word.
  • Not Synced
    "Darling, just adjust a bit.
  • Not Synced
    Just adjust.
  • Not Synced
No matter what happens, just adjust."
  • Not Synced
"Adjust" trains girls to be powerless,
  • Not Synced
not to exist, not to be seen,
  • Not Synced
    not to have a self,
  • Not Synced
and it trains boys to claim power
    and authority over the world.
  • Not Synced
And in the meantime we keep talking about
    gender equality and women's empowerment.
  • Not Synced
After 2012, after the gang rape
in a moving bus in Delhi,
  • Not Synced
    I really wanted to understand
    the roots of abuse.
  • Not Synced
    So I started asking
    a very simple question:
  • Not Synced
what does it mean to you
to be a good woman or a good man today?
  • Not Synced
And I was so surprised by what I heard,
  • Not Synced
    the answers particularly
    that young people gave,
  • Not Synced
that the project became a research project
and it took over my life.
  • Not Synced
    For three years, I listened
to over 600 women, men and children,
  • Not Synced
    educated, middle class,
  • Not Synced
and it led to 1,800 hours of listening
  • Not Synced
    and 8,000 pages of notes
  • Not Synced
    and it took another year
    to make sense of it.
  • Not Synced
    Nowadays, we see well-dressed, educated
women like many of you in this room,
  • Not Synced
all of you in this room, and myself,
  • Not Synced
and we think the world has changed,
  • Not Synced
    but these external changes
    are extremely misleading,
  • Not Synced
    because on the inside,
  • Not Synced
    we have not changed.
  • Not Synced
    So today, I'm not going
    to talk about poor people.
  • Not Synced
I'm going to talk only about
    the middle and upper classes,
  • Not Synced
because are the ones most in denial.
  • Not Synced
We are the ones who have said
    over and over again
  • Not Synced
    that when women are educated,
  • Not Synced
    when they're employed
  • Not Synced
    and they earn incomes,
  • Not Synced
they will be equal, empowered, and free.
  • Not Synced
    They're not.
  • Not Synced
    Why?
  • Not Synced
From my research, I identify seven habits
  • Not Synced
    that delete women,
  • Not Synced
    that make women disappear,
  • Not Synced
    but these habits persist
  • Not Synced
because they're so familiar to us
  • Not Synced
and we've made them good and moral.
  • Not Synced
Why would you change or drop
    anything that's good and moral?
  • Not Synced
So, on the one hand, we love our children,
  • Not Synced
    we love our daughters,
  • Not Synced
and on the other hand we crush them.
  • Not Synced
Habit one: you don't have a body.
  • Not Synced
The first step to make a girl a ghost
is to make her body disappear,
  • Not Synced
to pretend that she doesn't have a body.
  • Not Synced
    A [?] who is 23 said,
  • Not Synced
    "In my family, we never
    spoke about the body, never."
  • Not Synced
And it is in this silence
  • Not Synced
that millions and millions of girls
    get sexually molested,
  • Not Synced
and they don't even tell their mothers.
  • Not Synced
And it's the negative comments from others
  • Not Synced
that leads to 90 percent of women
saying that they dislike their bodies.
  • Not Synced
When a girl rejects her body,
  • Not Synced
    she rejects her only house
  • Not Synced
    and invisibility and insecurity
  • Not Synced
    become her very shaky foundation.
  • Not Synced
    Habit two: be quiet. Chup.
  • Not Synced
If you're not supposed to exist
  • Not Synced
and you don't have a body,
  • Not Synced
how can you have a voice?
  • Not Synced
So just about every woman said,
  • Not Synced
"When I was little, my mother
used to scold me and say,
  • Not Synced
'Don't speak, be quiet, be chup,
  • Not Synced
    speak softly, don't argue,
    and never answer back.
  • Not Synced
    [??].'"
  • Not Synced
I'm sure you've all heard that.
  • Not Synced
    And so girls become afraid
    and they withdraw.
  • Not Synced
And they become quiet and they say,
  • Not Synced
    "Let it go. [??].
  • Not Synced
    What's the point? Nobody listens."
  • Not Synced
    Educated women said
  • Not Synced
    that their number one problem
  • Not Synced
was their inability to speak up,
  • Not Synced
as if there was a foot on their throat
  • Not Synced
    ready to choke them.
  • Not Synced
    Silence slices off women.
  • Not Synced
Habit three: be a people pleaser.
  • Not Synced
    Please others.
  • Not Synced
    Everyone likes a nice woman
    who always smiles,
  • Not Synced
    who never says no,
  • Not Synced
    who is never angry,
  • Not Synced
    even when she's being exploited.
  • Not Synced
    Amisha, who is 18, said,
  • Not Synced
    "My father said,
  • Not Synced
'If I don't see you smiling,
    I don't feel good.'"
  • Not Synced
    So she smiles.
  • Not Synced
So her father is teaching her,
  • Not Synced
    my happiness is more important
    than your happiness.
  • Not Synced
And in this business of trying
to make everyone happy all the time,
  • Not Synced
girls become afraid to make decisions.
  • Not Synced
And when you ask them, they say,
  • Not Synced
    "Anything, whatever. [??]."
  • Not Synced
    Everything goes. [??]
  • Not Synced
    ??, who is 25,
  • Not Synced
    said with great pride,
  • Not Synced
    "I'm highly elastic.
  • Not Synced
I become whatever others want me to be."
  • Not Synced
Such girls give up their dreams,
  • Not Synced
    their desires,
  • Not Synced
    and nobody even notices,
  • Not Synced
    except for depression.
  • Not Synced
    It moves in.
  • Not Synced
Another slice of a girl is taken off.
  • Not Synced
Habit four: you have no sexuality.
  • Not Synced
I think you'd all agree that
with a population of over 1.3 billion,
  • Not Synced
sex is not new to India.
  • Not Synced
    What is new is that
    more people now acknowledge
  • Not Synced
    that women too
have a right to sexual desire.
  • Not Synced
But how can a woman who has not
been allowed to own her body,
  • Not Synced
who hasn't been educated about her body,
  • Not Synced
who may have been sexually molested,
  • Not Synced
    who cannot say no
  • Not Synced
and who has been filled with shame,
  • Not Synced
how can she claim her sexual desire?
  • Not Synced
    A woman's sexuality is suppressed.
  • Not Synced
    Habit five: don't trust women.
  • Not Synced
Imagine how the world would change
  • Not Synced
if women came together in solidarity,
  • Not Synced
    but as to make sure
    that this doesn't happen,
  • Not Synced
our culture places high moral value
  • Not Synced
on loyalty to men and family secrecy.
  • Not Synced
    Woman after woman said,
  • Not Synced
"I know only one trustworthy woman,
  • Not Synced
    and that's me."
  • Not Synced
    Even ??, who is 30
  • Not Synced
and who works on women's empowerment
    at Delhi University, said,
  • Not Synced
    "I don't trust women.
    They're jealous and they backbite."
  • Not Synced
    Obviously, then, in cities,
  • Not Synced
    women don't join women's groups,
  • Not Synced
and when you ask them why, they say,
"We don't have time for gossip."
  • Not Synced
    It's much easier to demolish
    a woman who is alone.
  • Not Synced
    Habit six: duty over desire.
  • Not Synced
?? gave a very long definition
of a good girl, and she's only 15.
  • Not Synced
"She is kind, gentle, polite, loving,
  • Not Synced
    caring, truthful, obedient,
    respects elders,
  • Not Synced
    helps everyone unconditionally,
and is good to others, and fulfills duty."
  • Not Synced
    Tiring, isn't it.
  • Not Synced
By the time you fulfill duty,
  • Not Synced
    whatever little desire
    is left is also lost.
  • Not Synced
    And when sacrificing mothers
    have nothing left to say
  • Not Synced
    except talk about food --
  • Not Synced
    "Have you eaten? [??]
    What will you eat?" --
  • Not Synced
men like Saurabh, who is 24,
    call them "boring."
  • Not Synced
    A woman becomes a residue.
  • Not Synced
    Habit seven: be totally dependent.
  • Not Synced
    So all these habits
    collectively crush women,
  • Not Synced
    fill hear with fear,
  • Not Synced
    and make her totally dependent
    on men for her survival,
  • Not Synced
    and this allows the system
    of male power to continue.
  • Not Synced
    So all these seven habits
that we thought were good and moral
  • Not Synced
    snatch life away from girls
  • Not Synced
    and position men to abuse.
  • Not Synced
    We must change.
  • Not Synced
    How do we change?
  • Not Synced
A habit is just a habit.
  • Not Synced
Every habit is a learned habit,
  • Not Synced
    so we can unlearn them
  • Not Synced
    and this personal change
    is extremely important.
  • Not Synced
    I had to change too.
  • Not Synced
But this doesn't change the system
  • Not Synced
that crushes millions of other women.
  • Not Synced
So we have to go to the roots.
  • Not Synced
We must change what it means
to be a good woman and a good man,
  • Not Synced
    because this a foundation
    of every society.
  • Not Synced
    We don't need elastic women,
    we need elastic definitions,
  • Not Synced
    for men too,
  • Not Synced
    and this big societal change
    cannot happen without men's involvement.
  • Not Synced
    We need you.
  • Not Synced
We need men to become champions of change,
  • Not Synced
    to develop strong change muscles.
  • Not Synced
Otherwise, it will be two more centuries
  • Not Synced
before our girls, and our boys,
  • Not Synced
    are safe and free.
  • Not Synced
    Imagine half a billion women
coming together, with the support of men,
  • Not Synced
    to talk to one another
    for conversation, for change,
  • Not Synced
    both personal and political,
  • Not Synced
and imagine men in their own circles,
  • Not Synced
and imagine women and men coming together
to just listen to each other
  • Not Synced
    without judgment, without blame,
  • Not Synced
    without accusations, and without shame.
  • Not Synced
Imagine how much we would change.
  • Not Synced
    We can do this together.
  • Not Synced
    Women, don't adjust.
  • Not Synced
    Men, adjust.
  • Not Synced
    It's time.
  • Not Synced
    Thank you.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
Moderator: Listening to her, I realized
that even in the simplest conversations
  • Not Synced
    that we have with women,
    we're actually being aggressive.
  • Not Synced
    For example, I do tell
    my daughter sometimes,
  • Not Synced
    "??".
  • Not Synced
So, sorry, I will never do that.
  • Not Synced
    ??
  • Not Synced
    Whatever you're doing,
  • Not Synced
    ??
  • Not Synced
    Right?
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    How did you feel,
  • Not Synced
    first listening to so many
    unfulfilled stories, desires,
  • Not Synced
    lack of independence,
  • Not Synced
of girls that you normally would assume
we think these girls are better off?
  • Not Synced
    DN: Very depressed.
  • Not Synced
    It was shocking for me,
    and that's why I couldn't stop,
  • Not Synced
because I had no plans to do a study
and no plans to write a book.
  • Not Synced
    I'd written 17 books before,
    and I thought, "I'm done,"
  • Not Synced
but when I went to ?? College
  • Not Synced
and I heard, at most elite colleges
    you well know from Delhi,
  • Not Synced
and the young women and the men,
  • Not Synced
what they said about what it meant
to them to be a woman and man
  • Not Synced
    sounded not like me
    but like my mother's generation.
  • Not Synced
So then I went to another college
    and another college.
  • Not Synced
The thing that was striking to me
  • Not Synced
is that each woman felt she was alone,
  • Not Synced
    that she hides her fear
    and hides her behavior
  • Not Synced
because she thinks it's a personal fault.
  • Not Synced
    It's not a personal fault, it's straining,
  • Not Synced
and I think that's the biggest revelation
  • Not Synced
is that, if we stop pretending,
  • Not Synced
    then the world changes.
  • Not Synced
Moderator: Do you girls all agree
    with what Deepa is saying?
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    Already see that young girl
saying, heard, heard what she said,
  • Not Synced
    you say this to me.
  • Not Synced
Yeah, that's the way it should be.
  • Not Synced
    You boys, you adjust.
We are not adjusting anymore, OK?
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    Thank you so much.
Have a good evening. Thank you.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
