Nature's custodians: Indigenous peoples speak up on Cambodia's environmental code
Description:

The new Environment and Natural Resources Code, which came into force in June 2024, has sparked serious concerns among the indigenous communities in Cambodia. While many anticipate the new Code will improve the management of Cambodia’s environment and natural resources, it was adopted without the crucial input of the indigenous peoples.

“We did not know, and we did not get the chance to give input, but the Code was suddenly adopted,” informed Tep Tem, a Kui indigenous elder.

❌ The removal of the term 'indigenous' from key sections of the Code has intensified their concerns. This is crucial as indigenous peoples have lived in harmony with nature for generations, and the Code could affect their access to protected zones, including forests, which provide them with food and other non-timber products and serve as sacred grounds for them to practice their beliefs.

"The most important part is to incorporate indigenous peoples’ rights into the Code, which are inherent rights of all human beings," said Nun Sokhunthea from the Cambodia Indigenous People Alliance, who is a Kreung indigenous person.

⚖️ It is crucial for Cambodia's indigenous communities to have their voices and rights recognized in any legislative action concerning the environment and natural resources. While the new Code is a step toward better managing the country’s resources, it must include the perspectives and contributions of indigenous peoples, who have coexisted with nature for centuries.

As advocates for indigenous communities, we call on governments to recognize the integral role of indigenous peoples and ensure the protection of their inherent rights. We believe that true sustainability and justice for all can only be achieved through inclusive dialogue and collaboration.
