Let’s make history in 2024: A message from Yanis Varoufakis

  • 0:00 - 0:01
    Hello.
  • 0:01 - 0:04
    This is Yanis Varoufakis
with an end of the year message
  • 0:04 - 0:06
    on behalf of
    everyone at DiEM25,
  • 0:06 - 0:09
    our pan European
    Democracy in Europe Movement,
  • 0:09 - 0:10
    to all of you.
  • 0:10 - 0:12
    This year's festivities
    come in the midst
  • 0:12 - 0:15
    of a genocide that
    will stigmatise a
  • 0:15 - 0:16
    whole generation.
  • 0:16 - 0:16
    Yes.
  • 0:16 - 0:18
    At this time of year,
    like throughout
  • 0:18 - 0:21
    the year, we must
    look after our loved ones,
  • 0:21 - 0:23
    celebrate their
    achievements,
  • 0:23 - 0:26
    take care of our nearest
    and dearest who
  • 0:26 - 0:27
    need our attention.
  • 0:27 - 0:30
    But we can't celebrate
    freely while thousands
  • 0:30 - 0:32
    of children are being
    slaughtered in the
  • 0:32 - 0:36
    Holy Land with the
    full complicity of
  • 0:36 - 0:38
    our European Union.
  • 0:38 - 0:42
    Our leaders from Von
    der Leyen to Olaf Scholz
  • 0:42 - 0:45
    and Manuel Macron, even
the European Party of the Left,
  • 0:45 - 0:47
    are being
    criminally complicit.
  • 0:48 - 0:50
And, by the way, so are
    we by associatio,
  • 0:50 - 0:52
    to the extent that
    we let them.
  • 0:52 - 0:56
    Ever since the seventh
    of October, when Hamas
  • 0:56 - 0:59
    broke out of the Gaza
    prison camp, as every
  • 0:59 - 1:02
    Palestinian has a duty
    to, but with acts of
  • 1:02 - 1:05
    atrocious violence that
    can never be justified.
  • 1:06 - 1:09
    Since then, the entire
    European political class
  • 1:09 - 1:13
    has behaved as
    morally superior to
  • 1:13 - 1:15
    both Palestinians
    and Israelis,
  • 1:15 - 1:16
    when in truth,
  • 1:16 - 1:20
    it was Europe that
    has been responsible
  • 1:20 - 1:23
    for centuries long
    antisemitism,
  • 1:23 - 1:25
    for the holocaust.
  • 1:25 - 1:27
And since the 1920’s, the Nakba,
  • 1:27 - 1:30
    the steady, systematic
    ethnic cleansing of
  • 1:30 - 1:33
    Palestinians, an ethnic
    cleansing, which today
  • 1:33 - 1:35
    unfolds as a fully
    fledged genocide.
  • 1:35 - 1:39
By not intervening to stop the
    slaughter in Gaza,
  • 1:40 - 1:44
in the West Bank, but also
    in Yemen, in Ukraine,
  • 1:44 - 1:46
    in Syria, in Kashmir,
  • 1:46 - 1:50
    Europe is proving that
    human rights are to us
  • 1:50 - 1:54
    that which the Bible
    was to the Spanish inquisition,
  • 1:54 - 1:56
a cover, a veneer of ethicality
  • 1:56 - 1:59
    with which to cover up
    our European settler
  • 1:59 - 2:02
    imperialist society's
    utter brutality.
  • 2:03 - 2:05
    We, Europeans,
    have lost sight of
  • 2:05 - 2:06
    a terrible fact.
  • 2:06 - 2:09
    Human rights are
    precisely that which
  • 2:09 - 2:13
    Europe and the United
    States never intended
  • 2:13 - 2:15
    to grant the oppressed.
  • 2:15 - 2:16
    To those who needed them,
  • 2:16 - 2:19
in the Middle East, in Africa, in Asia,
  • 2:19 - 2:22
    but also in our depressed
    working class areas
  • 2:22 - 2:26
    in Europe, in Britain,
    in the United States,
  • 2:26 - 2:27
    in the West.
  • 2:27 - 2:33
    The whole Western litany
about human rights is a sham.
  • 2:33 - 2:35
    It is only an excuse
    to bomb, to shoot,
  • 2:35 - 2:37
    and to violate
    those who actually
  • 2:37 - 2:39
    need human rights.
  • 2:39 - 2:42
    And to do this to
    them while pretending
  • 2:43 - 2:45
    that we're somehow
    morally superior.
  • 2:45 - 2:48
    What is happening today
    in Gaza, in Kashmir,
  • 2:48 - 2:52
    in Yemen, in Syria, in
    Nagorno Karabakh, will
  • 2:52 - 2:56
    determine our capacity
    as Europeans to live
  • 2:56 - 2:58
    freely in our own
    countries in Europe.
  • 2:58 - 3:01
    To live without fear of
    oppression or indignity
  • 3:01 - 3:03
    here in Greece, in
    Germany, in France,
  • 3:03 - 3:06
    in Spain, in Portugal, in
    Britain, in Ireland.
  • 3:06 - 3:09
    As Julian Assange
    continues to rot away
  • 3:09 - 3:13
    in solitary in Britain's
    Guantanamo for having
  • 3:13 - 3:17
    dared to expose to
    us the crimes of our
  • 3:17 - 3:20
    governments committed
    in our name against our
  • 3:20 - 3:23
    interest, our right to
    know has been shattered.
  • 3:23 - 3:26
    While the European Union
    continues to fund the
  • 3:26 - 3:29
    few who have more money
than they know what to do with,
  • 3:29 - 3:32
    while starving
    the many and refusing
  • 3:32 - 3:35
    to fund the green
    transition without which
  • 3:35 - 3:36
    there will be no future.
  • 3:36 - 3:39
    Our own societies
    are being poisoned
  • 3:39 - 3:41
    spiritually, and our
    species' survival
  • 3:41 - 3:43
    becomes less likely.
  • 3:43 - 3:46
    With the toxification
    of our politics and
  • 3:46 - 3:50
    our planet proceeding
    so swiftly, it is
  • 3:50 - 3:53
    easy to lose hope,
    to give up, no longer
  • 3:53 - 3:55
    to look up, but this
    is not inevitable.
  • 3:55 - 3:57
    DiEM25 proves,
    by our very
  • 3:57 - 4:00
    existence, our activism
    that a democratic,
  • 4:01 - 4:03
    compassionate, and
    radically progressive
  • 4:03 - 4:05
    Europe is not just
    possible, but that it
  • 4:05 - 4:11
    is here in DiEM25, in
    our political parties, MERA25,
  • 4:11 - 4:13
    here in Greece,
    in Germany, in Italy,
  • 4:13 - 4:14
    soon in other countries.
  • 4:15 - 4:17
    Next June, Europe is
    going to be staging
  • 4:17 - 4:20
    another sham European
    parliament election.
  • 4:20 - 4:24
    We, DiEM25 and MERA25,
    our political parties,
  • 4:24 - 4:27
    are going to be running,
    not because the European Parliament
  • 4:27 - 4:28
    can change
    anything in itself,
  • 4:28 - 4:32
    but because your voice must
    resonate in its chamber.
  • 4:32 - 4:35
    It must be amplified
in there so that it can
  • 4:35 - 4:39
    be heard loud and clear
    out there across Europe.
  • 4:39 - 4:42
    So that our voices,
    your voices, can expose
  • 4:42 - 4:44
    our rulers' lies and
    hypocrisy.
  • 4:44 - 4:47
To resonate in there as a first
    step towards liberating
  • 4:47 - 4:50
    your voices so that
    they can together become
  • 4:50 - 4:54
    a surge of reason and
    humanism, a surge that
  • 4:54 - 4:56
    reclaims our continent,
    our countries, our
  • 4:56 - 4:59
    cities, our villages,
    our neighborhoods.
  • 4:59 - 4:59
    From whom?
  • 4:59 - 5:02
    From the oligarchy, who
    feast on humanity and
  • 5:02 - 5:05
    nature in the interest
    of profit and, of course,
  • 5:05 - 5:07
    from exporting
    arms, weapons to
  • 5:07 - 5:08
    their former colonies.
  • 5:09 - 5:11
    In this struggle to
    raise hell in the
  • 5:11 - 5:14
    European Parliament
    on behalf of heaven
  • 5:14 - 5:16
    and, therefore, to
    save our souls, our
  • 5:16 - 5:18
    species, our planet.
  • 5:18 - 5:19
    We need your help.
  • 5:19 - 5:22
    Your support has been
    central, essential
  • 5:22 - 5:24
    in keeping DiEM25
    alive in terms of our
  • 5:24 - 5:27
    operations, the spirit
    of our democracy,
  • 5:27 - 5:28
    our mission, our campaign.
  • 5:28 - 5:31
    DiEM25 has been, for
    years now, fueled
  • 5:31 - 5:33
    by uncommon people
    like your good self,
  • 5:33 - 5:36
    people who demand a
    different peace loving Europe.
  • 5:36 - 5:38
    A Europe whose
    prosperity is common
  • 5:38 - 5:40
    and divorced from
    the logic of profit.
  • 5:40 - 5:43
    For that, our resolve
    and our commitment
  • 5:43 - 5:45
    must walk hand in hand.
  • 5:45 - 5:49
    Only so will we turn
    this bogus sham of
  • 5:49 - 5:50
    an election for the
    European Parliament
  • 5:50 - 5:52
    into a useful campaign.
  • 5:52 - 5:55
    Our political parties,
    MERA25, are geared
  • 5:55 - 5:56
    to do exactly that.
  • 5:56 - 5:58
    So on this holiday
    season, we ask you to
  • 5:58 - 5:59
    stand with us again.
  • 5:59 - 6:02
    Your contribution can
    make all the difference.
  • 6:02 - 6:05
    Together, we can bring
    DiEM25's message, voice,
  • 6:05 - 6:07
    to the floor of the
    European Parliament.
  • 6:07 - 6:10
    That won't change Europe
    by itself, but it will
  • 6:10 - 6:13
    give Europeans a chance,
    a shot at reclaiming
  • 6:13 - 6:17
the right to know and to
    be heard, an important
  • 6:17 - 6:21
    opportunity to empower
    the many, not the few.
  • 6:21 - 6:23
    In the process, and
    since this is the
  • 6:23 - 6:27
    festive season, let me
    add that as DiEM25
  • 6:27 - 6:29
    has proven in
    all our get togethers,
  • 6:29 - 6:31
    we can do this.
  • 6:31 - 6:33
    We can do what is
    right by Europeans
  • 6:33 - 6:35
    and by the world and
    by the planet while
  • 6:35 - 6:37
    having fun as well.
  • 6:37 - 6:39
    So a happy holiday
    season for everyone.
  • 6:40 - 6:41
    Carpe diem.
