Erin Dinan : World Humanitarian Day 2012
-
0:02 - 0:08[The local hero Erin Dinan]
-
0:08 - 0:11- [Cooper] We've been focusing a lot on change overseas,
-
0:11 - 0:16and one of the things that Valerie Amos talked about was the importance of World Humanitarian Day
-
0:16 - 0:20as not just something that's happening for people overseas but it's also
-
0:20 - 0:23people making changes in their own communities right here in New York,
-
0:23 - 0:28or Los Angeles, or in Iowa or anywhere around the world that they may be.
-
0:28 - 0:32And that's one of the things that UN is really trying to hope to encourage people to do,
-
0:32 - 0:33is to try to look in their own community,
-
0:34 - 0:38that a lot people don't have obviously the resources to travel somewhere far away,
-
0:38 - 0:42but they can look in their communities and that's how real change happens.
-
0:43 - 0:46And I wanna introduce you to somebody who's made a change in her community.
-
0:46 - 0:48Her name is Erin Dinan.
-
0:48 - 0:53And, she's a photographer who started a non-profit for one sandwich at a time.
-
0:53 - 0:54Erin.
-
0:54 - 1:00[applause and cheers]
-
1:01 - 1:02- [Cooper] Hey, nice to meet you.
-
1:04 - 1:06So, um that's you mic.
-
1:06 - 1:09So, you're a photographer, and you started this non-profit.
-
1:09 - 1:10How did that come about?
-
1:10 - 1:15- [Dinan] I took my camera and I started photographing some people on the streets with their permission,
-
1:15 - 1:16and I wanted to speak with them.
-
1:16 - 1:21And, I wanted to hear their stories because I think a lot of times we,
-
1:21 - 1:25we tend to pass judgment on people on the streets.
-
1:26 - 1:30I wanted to change that, I just wanted to raise awareness for them.
-
1:30 - 1:34So, I didn't know how to give back for these amazing people,
-
1:34 - 1:37and I've heard some incredible stories from these people.
-
1:38 - 1:39So, I would hand them a sandwich.
-
1:39 - 1:44And I would pack a sandwich or a few sandwiches every morning on my way out the door,
-
1:44 - 1:52and I thought if I can at least help another individual make it to their next meal then I've made a difference.
-
1:52 - 1:55- [Cooper] So, when you hear about World Humanitarian Day what do you think?
-
1:56 - 1:58Why did you wanna be here, a part of it?
-
1:58 - 2:00- [Dinan] I'm honored to be here.
-
2:00 - 2:04I wanted to be here just because I think something needs to happen,
-
2:04 - 2:07just around the world locally and globally.
-
2:07 - 2:12I think we need to work together if we want this world to continue.
-
2:13 - 2:15And we are all so connected.
-
2:15 - 2:17I'm no different from someone on the street,
-
2:17 - 2:20we've just had different trials and tribulations in life so...
-
2:22 - 2:24- [Cooper] Thank you. Thank you so much. Really incredible.
- [Dinan] Thank you so much, thank toy. -
2:24 - 2:25- [Cooper] Do you have a website?
-
2:25 - 2:29- [Dinan] I do, it's onesandwichatatime.com
-
2:29 - 2:32- [Cooper] Alright, cool, you got a crowd you might as well get out the website.

Erin Dinan, is a native New Yorker and photographer who made a habit of preparing an extra sandwich in the morning to hand out to any homeless person she would happen to come across. This small act of kindness soon grew into a non-profit called One Sandwich at a Time that makes and distributes hundreds of sandwiches every day. - Video Language:
