June 28 - A Light After Papua’s Storm

  • 0:06 - 0:08
    In March 2019,
  • 0:08 - 0:10
a devastating flash flood and mudslide
  • 0:10 - 0:13
    struck Jayapura, Papua, Indonesia,
  • 0:13 - 0:17
    engulfing the campus
    of Papua Adventist Theological College.
  • 0:18 - 0:21
This catastrophe claimed dozens of lives,
  • 0:22 - 0:24
    displaced thousands of people,
  • 0:24 - 0:28
and forced the school to relocate
    in a temporary facility
  • 0:28 - 0:32
    while it rebuilt its infrastructure
    and academic programs.
  • 0:33 - 0:34
    Despite this situation,
  • 0:34 - 0:40
God's grace and blessing have enabled
    the school to continue operating.
  • 0:43 - 0:46
    Students at this campus
    come from various places.
  • 0:46 - 0:49
Some are from remote areas in Papua,
  • 0:49 - 0:50
    in the mountains,
  • 0:50 - 0:52
    others from coastal regions.
  • 0:55 - 1:00
Currently, the college has 22 students
    with 18 faculty and staff.
  • 1:00 - 1:03
Even the numbers are now decreasing
  • 1:03 - 1:06
    due to catastrophes
that are causing people to relocate.
  • 1:08 - 1:13
    Although our campus is small,
    our professors are exceptional,
  • 1:13 - 1:15
teaching us in-depth about the Bible.
  • 1:19 - 1:21
I decided to study at STTP
  • 1:21 - 1:24
because it teaches us how to be
    better pastors in the future.
  • 1:27 - 1:31
    The college has a unique
    value that attracts students.
  • 1:32 - 1:35
Despite the small number of students
    and lecturers on this campus,
  • 1:35 - 1:38
    a unity atmosphere exists
and is always present among us.
  • 1:39 - 1:44
This college is committed to giving
    its students the best education
  • 1:44 - 1:46
    and ministry experience.
  • 1:48 - 1:52
When we go out, we usually do
    visitation and ministry with pastors,
  • 1:52 - 1:54
church members, and even our lecturers
  • 1:54 - 1:57
on various islands like Napan Island,
  • 1:57 - 1:58
where there's no Adventist church yet.
  • 2:01 - 2:03
    Balancing spiritual education
  • 2:03 - 2:05
and hands-on ministry is the best way
  • 2:05 - 2:09
    to keep students
    connected to God's mission.
  • 2:09 - 2:14
    Currently, all teaching takes place
    in their limited classroom facilities,
  • 2:14 - 2:17
    which are inadequate for providing
    an optimal learning experience.
  • 2:19 - 2:21
We really need a lot more facilities
  • 2:21 - 2:24
    such as computers, books,
  • 2:24 - 2:27
    classrooms, dorms, chairs, whiteboards,
  • 2:27 - 2:30
    which are essential
  • 2:30 - 2:34
    to support both the students
and the lecturers on this campus.
  • 2:38 - 2:43
    Due to ongoing campus construction,
    we can't study properly.
  • 2:43 - 2:46
    We are conducting classes
    in unfinished classrooms.
  • 2:47 - 2:49
    And since our dormitories
    are not yet ready,
  • 2:49 - 2:53
    we are temporarily staying
in the homes of church members.
  • 2:54 - 2:57
    This college has faced
    numerous challenges,
  • 2:57 - 3:01
    including limited programs
    and losing their campus home.
  • 3:01 - 3:03
    Your prayers are needed.
  • 3:04 - 3:06
    As a world church,
we need your support in prayers.
  • 3:07 - 3:08
    Please pray for this place.
  • 3:09 - 3:12
    Please pray for Papua
    Adventist Theological School
  • 3:12 - 3:13
that we may be able to grow
  • 3:14 - 3:18
    facility-wise, number of students,
  • 3:18 - 3:19
    the faculty members,
  • 3:19 - 3:22
and to be able to offer
    much more programs.
  • 3:23 - 3:24
    As the school grows,
  • 3:24 - 3:27
    its goal is to introduce
    more people to Christ.
  • 3:29 - 3:32
    One of my personal desires
    as a school leader
  • 3:32 - 3:35
    is to see many Papuans
    brought home to heaven.
  • 3:36 - 3:41
A portion of your 13th Sabbath offering
    will help construct facilities
  • 3:41 - 3:43
    needed for this college.
  • 3:43 - 3:47
    Thank you for supporting
the mission offering for this school.
