Finding consecutive multiples (1,000 and 10,000) | 3rd grade math (TX TEKS) | Khan Academy

  • 0:00 - 0:02
    - [Instructor] We're told Sabrina walked
  • 0:02 - 0:06
about 80,000 steps in a week.
  • 0:06 - 0:08
    Which point on the number
    line could represent
  • 0:08 - 0:11
    how many steps Sabrina walked?
  • 0:11 - 0:12
    So pause this video,
  • 0:12 - 0:15
and have a go before we
    work on this together.
  • 0:17 - 0:22
All right, so it looks like
    they've labeled three points,
  • 0:22 - 0:27
    and they are all between
    70,000 and 80,000.
  • 0:27 - 0:30
And when they say about 80,000 steps,
  • 0:30 - 0:32
    they're saying it's not exactly 80,000,
  • 0:32 - 0:36
but if we were to estimate,
    if we were to round,
  • 0:36 - 0:39
then we would get to 80,000.
  • 0:39 - 0:43
Now if we have three points
that are between 70 and 80,000,
  • 0:43 - 0:45
the ones that are less than halfway
  • 0:45 - 0:48
of the way between 70 and 80,000,
  • 0:48 - 0:51
they would round back to 70,000.
  • 0:51 - 0:52
Or another way to think about it,
  • 0:52 - 0:54
if you're rounding to the nearest 10,000,
  • 0:54 - 0:57
point A and B would round to 70,000.
  • 0:57 - 1:00
    But we see that point
    C is more than halfway.
  • 1:00 - 1:02
This is a halfway point right over here.
  • 1:02 - 1:06
    C is more than halfway
    from 70,000 to 80,000.
  • 1:06 - 1:08
Another way to think about it is closer
  • 1:08 - 1:09
    to 80,000 than 70,000.
  • 1:09 - 1:12
And so if you had to estimate this,
  • 1:12 - 1:15
or say what was about, and
round to the nearest to 10,000,
  • 1:15 - 1:17
    you would go to 80,000.
  • 1:17 - 1:20
And so that's why I like point C.
