Division word problems within 100: How many groups?

  • 0:00 - 0:03
    - [Instructor] We are told a
    party store has 52 balloons.
  • 0:03 - 0:06
    The store owner wants to
    tie four balloons together
  • 0:06 - 0:10
    in each group to decorate
    the front windows.
  • 0:10 - 0:13
How many groups can the store owner make?
  • 0:13 - 0:14
Pause this video and have a go at this
  • 0:14 - 0:16
    before we do this together.
  • 0:16 - 0:18
All right, now let's do this together.
  • 0:18 - 0:20
So if we had a certain number of groups,
  • 0:20 - 0:24
so let me write this, number of groups,
  • 0:25 - 0:27
and if we had that number of groups,
  • 0:27 - 0:30
    times four, times four,
  • 0:30 - 0:32
    that would be the total
    number of balloons we have,
  • 0:32 - 0:35
which we know is going to be 52 balloons.
  • 0:35 - 0:36
So another way to think about it is
  • 0:36 - 0:39
we have blank times four is equal to 52,
  • 0:39 - 0:43
or we could say four times
    the number of groups blank
  • 0:43 - 0:45
    is equal to 52,
  • 0:45 - 0:47
or we could say that blank
  • 0:47 - 0:51
is equal to 52 divided by four.
  • 0:51 - 0:53
So what do we get for that blank,
  • 0:53 - 0:55
which is also going to be the same thing
  • 0:55 - 1:00
    as the number of groups?
  • 1:00 - 1:02
    The number of groups.
  • 1:02 - 1:04
    Well, actually let's go back
to this one right over here,
  • 1:04 - 1:07
four times what is equal to 52?
  • 1:07 - 1:11
Well, we know that four times 10
  • 1:11 - 1:14
is going to get us to 40.
  • 1:14 - 1:17
So how do we get to 52? Well,
we have to get another 12.
  • 1:17 - 1:20
    So another way to think
about it is four times what
  • 1:20 - 1:24
is going to be equal to 40 plus 12.
  • 1:24 - 1:27
    Well, we know that if
    you take four times 10,
  • 1:27 - 1:31
we know that if you take
four times 10, you get to 40.
  • 1:31 - 1:34
And then we also know if
    you take four times three,
  • 1:34 - 1:36
    you get to 12.
  • 1:36 - 1:40
So if you take four times
four, let me write it this way,
  • 1:40 - 1:45
    four times 10 plus three,
  • 1:45 - 1:47
that's going to be, we just
    use the distributive property,
  • 1:47 - 1:49
that would be four times 10, which is 40,
  • 1:49 - 1:52
plus four times three plus 12,
  • 1:52 - 1:54
that is going to be equal to 52,
  • 1:54 - 1:55
which is exactly what we wanna get to.
  • 1:55 - 1:58
So 10 plus three, this is 13.
  • 1:58 - 2:02
So four times 13 is equal to 52.
  • 2:02 - 2:05
So blank or the number of groups is 13.
  • 2:05 - 2:10
    Number of groups, 13, times
four is truly equal to 52
  • 2:10 - 2:13
or 52 divided by four is 13.
