The myth of Jason and the Argonauts - Iseult Gillespie
-
0:06 - 0:09Hercules,
the strongest man alive -
0:09 - 0:11with a mighty heart to match.
-
0:11 - 0:15Orpheus,
charmer of nature and master of music. -
0:15 - 0:19Castor and Pollux,
the twin tricksters hatched from an egg. -
0:19 - 0:21The Boreads,
sons of the North Wind -
0:21 - 0:24who could hurtle through the air.
-
0:24 - 0:28For untold times
these heroes had roamed ancient Greece, -
0:28 - 0:30creating new legends wherever they went.
-
0:30 - 0:35But none of their adventures
was so great as when they joined forces -
0:35 - 0:38for the sake of a young man named Jason.
-
0:38 - 0:39Years before,
-
0:39 - 0:42Jason’s uncle Pelias
had ruthlessly usurped -
0:42 - 0:45the throne of Thessaly
from Jason’s grandfather. -
0:45 - 0:49When Jason returned
to his father’s stolen court, -
0:49 - 0:53the cowardly king
set him a seemingly impossible task: -
0:53 - 0:55cross the teeming seas to Colchis,
-
0:55 - 0:59and steal
the golden fleece of a flying ram -
0:59 - 1:01under King Aeetes’ nose.
-
1:01 - 1:03If Jason retrieved the Fleece,
-
1:03 - 1:06Pelias promised to relinquish the throne.
-
1:06 - 1:08Touched by his heroic mission,
-
1:08 - 1:11the Gods spread Jason’s call for help,
-
1:11 - 1:15and soon
he had assembled a not-so-motley crew. -
1:15 - 1:16These heroes,
-
1:16 - 1:20alongside countless sailors,
soothsayers, and rebel demigods, -
1:20 - 1:24named themselves
the Argonauts after their sturdy ship. -
1:24 - 1:28But the path ahead
was marked with untold terrors– -
1:28 - 1:32enough to test even the fiercest heroes.
-
1:32 - 1:34Their first stop was Lemnos,
-
1:34 - 1:38an isle of women
who had killed all the island’s men. -
1:38 - 1:39As punishment,
-
1:39 - 1:42Aphrodite had cursed them
with a sickening stench– -
1:42 - 1:46but that didn’t stop Jason
fathering twins with the queen. -
1:46 - 1:51The rest of the crew also found themselves
embroiled in new romances; -
1:51 - 1:56until Hercules chastised them
for not behaving like heroes. -
1:56 - 1:59Eventually,
they sailed on to the Mount of Bears, -
1:59 - 2:03an island where a group of ancient,
six-armed monsters -
2:03 - 2:06lived alongside the peaceful Doliones.
-
2:06 - 2:09While the clan welcomed
the Argonauts with open arms, -
2:09 - 2:12the monsters surged down
from the mountains -
2:12 - 2:16and hurled rocks at the docked ship.
-
2:16 - 2:18Hercules held them off single-handedly,
-
2:18 - 2:21before his comrades joined the fray.
-
2:21 - 2:25Bolstered by their victory,
the triumphant heroes sailed onward– -
2:25 - 2:30only to be blown back
to the island several stormy nights later. -
2:30 - 2:31In the tempest,
-
2:31 - 2:34the Doliones
thought these new arrivals invaders. -
2:34 - 2:38The Argonauts were similarly unaware
of their surroundings, -
2:38 - 2:42and fought blunderingly in the dark,
slaying wave after wave of foe. -
2:42 - 2:46But the morning light
revealed a horrible truth: -
2:46 - 2:51their victims
were none other than their previous hosts. -
2:51 - 2:51Yet again,
-
2:51 - 2:54Jason had allowed the crew
to be distracted, -
2:54 - 2:57this time at a terrible cost.
-
2:57 - 2:58Ashamed at his conduct,
-
2:58 - 3:01he resolved
to focus only on the Fleece, -
3:01 - 3:04but even this haste proved ruinous.
-
3:04 - 3:08When Hercules’ squire
was abducted by a water nymph, -
3:08 - 3:09Jason sailed on–
-
3:09 - 3:14oblivious to the absence
of his most powerful crewmate. -
3:14 - 3:17The remaining Argonauts
continued their quest, -
3:17 - 3:18until stopping at the sight
-
3:18 - 3:23of an old man
surrounded by a swirl of harpies. -
3:23 - 3:27This was Phineas,
a seer cursed by Zeus -
3:27 - 3:31to endure
old age, blindness, and endless torture -
3:31 - 3:34for giving away
his prophecies. -
3:34 - 3:37Moved by his plight,
the wind brothers set upon the flock, -
3:37 - 3:40providing Phineas
with a brief respite from his punishment. -
3:40 - 3:42In return,
-
3:42 - 3:47the seer told them how to overcome
the terrifying trial that lay ahead: -
3:47 - 3:49the Symplegades,
-
3:49 - 3:53a pair clashing rocks
that reduced ships to splinters. -
3:53 - 3:54But first,
-
3:54 - 3:58the Argonauts would have to maneuver
past the mouth of hell, -
3:58 - 4:01around the island
of the bloodthirsty Amazons, -
4:01 - 4:04and under psychedelic skies.
-
4:04 - 4:08These adventures cost the crew
both in men and morale– -
4:08 - 4:11and some feared
they might be losing their minds. -
4:11 - 4:16Upon reaching the clashing rocks,
the exhausted crew quaked with fear. -
4:16 - 4:20But Phineas’ advice rang in their heads.
-
4:20 - 4:22The Argonauts released a single dove
-
4:22 - 4:26and sped through in its wake
to emerge unscathed. -
4:26 - 4:28With this narrow escape,
-
4:28 - 4:32the Argonauts
finally had Colchis in their sights. -
4:32 - 4:35Yet while Jason rested
and celebrated with his crew, -
4:35 - 4:39he could feel his time
among them was drawing to a close. -
4:39 - 4:41As the fleece gleamed in his mind,
-
4:41 - 4:44he knew
he would have to retrieve it alone. -
4:44 - 4:47But he could not guess
that this final task -
4:47 - 4:50would have the most horrible price of all.

I believe the comma after "Upon" in 4:11 - 4:16 is not correct.
