From Civil War to Uncivil Conduct: The Many Controversies of Maj. Joseph H. Sloss
Description:

The Alabama Department of Archives & History (ADAH) will continue its 2025 Food for Thought lunchtime lecture series on Thursday, April 17, at 12:00pm CT. Kayla Gurner will present From Civil War to Uncivil Conduct: The Many Controversies of Major Joseph H. Sloss. The program will be held in the ADAH’s Joseph M. Farley Alabama Power Auditorium in Montgomery. It will also be livestreamed on the ADAH’s Facebook page and YouTube channel. Admission is FREE.

Kayla Gurner, senior reference archivist at the Alabama Department of Archives and History, holds a master's degree in public history. Her scholarly work includes published articles in the Encyclopedia of Alabama and Alabama Heritage. Among her contributions are articles on Joseph Humphrey Sloss, a prominent political and industrial figure in Alabama’s post-Civil War history.

Born in Somerville, Alabama, in 1828, Joseph H. Sloss built a career that spanned law, politics, journalism, and military service. He served as a lawyer, Illinois State Representative, major in Alabama’s Confederate cavalry, U.S. Congressman, U.S. Marshal, and newspaper editor. His military service, however, became a source of controversy long after the war, as accusations of desertion and misconduct surfaced in the press. Gurner’s presentation will explore the fascinating and often tumultuous episodes of Sloss’s life.
