How "she" became an IAS officer | Surabhi Gautam | TEDxRGPV
-
0:09 - 0:10Namaste!
-
0:10 - 0:13Today, as you see me
as a package of success, -
0:13 - 0:17when my bio says that I have cleared
all the top prestigious exams -
0:17 - 0:19and interviews of India.
-
0:20 - 0:23My friends, let me tell you
not more about my successes -
0:23 - 0:29but more about my rejections, my failures,
and my determination, my willpower -
0:29 - 0:31that made me get those successes.
-
0:32 - 0:36So my story starts from a small
sleepy village of Madhya Pradesh -
0:37 - 0:40with a population
of barely a thousand people. -
0:40 - 0:42On the month of a rainy August,
-
0:42 - 0:47a small girl was born
in an orthodox Brahmin family - -
0:47 - 0:51a family that was giant
and joint with 30 plus members - -
0:51 - 0:54it was not an event for them.
-
0:54 - 0:57There was nothing that worth celebrating
happened that day when I was born, -
0:57 - 0:59only two souls on Earth were happy,
-
0:59 - 1:02obviously, they were my parents,
-
1:02 - 1:04for the rest of them,
it was a normal affair. -
1:05 - 1:1025 years down the line,
same girl, same village, -
1:10 - 1:13and the whole family
was welcoming her with garlands, -
1:13 - 1:15bang bang slogans like,
-
1:15 - 1:18(Hindi) "What should a girl look like?
Like Surabhi Gautam! Why not?" -
1:18 - 1:21What made things
to become so different for her? -
1:21 - 1:23(Applause)
-
1:25 - 1:28My dear friends, let me tell you
how things changed -
1:28 - 1:30not only for me but also for my parents,
-
1:30 - 1:35how all the perspectives got changed
slowly, slowly, steadily, steadily. -
1:36 - 1:37I was in a joint family.
-
1:37 - 1:43In a joint family, you know,
no child gets separate attention. -
1:43 - 1:44So we all were treated equally.
-
1:44 - 1:47Life was OK. We were happy.
-
1:47 - 1:49I got admission in my village school.
-
1:49 - 1:51That was Hindi medium:
-
1:51 - 1:53Madhya Pradesh Board School.
-
1:54 - 1:55In 5th class,
-
1:55 - 1:59something good happened with me
that I remember till date. -
1:59 - 2:03I got 100 out of 100
in my mathematics paper. -
2:03 - 2:055th class was a board class.
-
2:05 - 2:08So my teacher called me, and she said,
-
2:08 - 2:10"See, I have never seen anybody
scoring full marks, -
2:10 - 2:13that in mathematics, that in board exam.
-
2:13 - 2:14You have done this,
-
2:14 - 2:17so I think you are going to do
something good in your studies." -
2:18 - 2:19That was the day
-
2:19 - 2:21when I felt appreciated and recognized,
-
2:21 - 2:25and I had given this
clear message to the Universe -
2:25 - 2:28that in future, all I'm going to do
is to be a studious girl -
2:28 - 2:31because with studies comes recognition,
-
2:31 - 2:33with studies will come
appreciation for me. -
2:33 - 2:37Otherwise, in this family,
I'm not going to get this at all. -
2:37 - 2:40So I started to focus more on studies.
-
2:40 - 2:43But my heart - it always
wanted to diversify. -
2:43 - 2:44I wanted to do everything.
-
2:44 - 2:48I started to try my hand
at painting, sketching, drawing. -
2:48 - 2:51I started to do embroidery also.
-
2:51 - 2:53I was busy with my village priest,
-
2:53 - 2:55and all the pujas,
-
2:55 - 2:58and on all the Ramayan
(Hindi) events (English) and everything. -
2:58 - 3:02And I was not noticing the pain
that was creeping in my body. -
3:02 - 3:05I started to feel the pain
in my joints and my elbow -
3:05 - 3:07and every joint of my body,
-
3:07 - 3:09and after some time, I was bedridden.
-
3:10 - 3:13My parents took this decision
with their meager resources -
3:13 - 3:15to take me there.
-
3:15 - 3:17We went there to a place called Jabalpur.
-
3:17 - 3:22And the doctor said, "Your daughter
has this rheumatic fever." -
3:23 - 3:25What happens in this disease is -
-
3:25 - 3:28there are viruses
always present in the air. -
3:28 - 3:30Now and then, they attack
the body of children, -
3:30 - 3:31and they create pain.
-
3:31 - 3:35And when it becomes serious,
what happens, they attack your heart -
3:35 - 3:38and they disturb the semilunar valve.
-
3:39 - 3:42And in some cases, it leads to death also.
-
3:42 - 3:44It was a shock for them.
-
3:45 - 3:49But then they asked,
"What can be the possible treatment?" -
3:50 - 3:52As a treatment, the doctor suggested
-
3:52 - 3:56that she should be given
the dose of antibiotic, -
3:56 - 3:58and that antibiotic was penicillin.
-
3:58 - 4:01There is some problem
with penicillin. What happens? -
4:01 - 4:04As soon as it enters the body,
it gets solidified -
4:04 - 4:06when it comes in contact with air.
-
4:06 - 4:07So it was again a problem
-
4:07 - 4:12because I had to be injected
with penicillin in every 15 days. -
4:12 - 4:15And not every MBBS doctor
was ready to do this -
4:15 - 4:19because it can also
lead to death in some cases. -
4:19 - 4:22So in the village, in every 15 days,
-
4:22 - 4:25it was also difficult
to get a skilled doctor -
4:25 - 4:28to inject me with the confidence
that I will not die. -
4:30 - 4:33Well, life was going OK, OK.
-
4:33 - 4:35There was a problem
of electricity in my village. -
4:35 - 4:38So I had to study by the kerosene lamp.
-
4:38 - 4:39I had other problems.
-
4:39 - 4:40There was no tuition.
-
4:40 - 4:43School situation was also very bad.
-
4:44 - 4:46Then the second best thing
of my life happened. -
4:47 - 4:49It was the 10th class result.
-
4:49 - 4:51My 10th results came,
-
4:51 - 4:53and I again scored 100 out of 100 -
-
4:53 - 4:56this time not only in mathematics
but also in science. -
4:56 - 4:58(Applause)
-
4:58 - 5:04And my percentage was good enough
to place me on the state merit list. -
5:04 - 5:05Well, I became
-
5:05 - 5:07a pseudo-celebrity of my village.
-
5:07 - 5:11I was in the news for quite a week,
and the newspaper interviewer came to me, -
5:12 - 5:14and he started to ask me questions,
-
5:14 - 5:15"How did you do this?" you know?
-
5:15 - 5:17"This is a great achievement and all."
-
5:17 - 5:19And at last, he asked one question,
-
5:19 - 5:22"Surabhi, what do you want
to become when you grow up? -
5:22 - 5:24You know, what is your career choice?"
-
5:24 - 5:28Well, I was not knowing what a career is.
-
5:28 - 5:29All I was knowing that,
-
5:29 - 5:31"OK, I'm good at dancing,
so I can be a dancer. -
5:31 - 5:32I can be a singer, too.
-
5:32 - 5:35I can paint also. But a career?"
-
5:35 - 5:38I told him, "Sir,
I cannot recall anything. -
5:38 - 5:40I cannot answer this question to you."
-
5:40 - 5:42He said, "Come on,
you have to answer this. -
5:42 - 5:44You have got a place in the merit list."
-
5:44 - 5:47Suddenly, a word flashed
in my mind out of nowhere, -
5:47 - 5:50and I said, "I want to be a collector."
-
5:50 - 5:52Well, he got the headline
for the next day, -
5:52 - 5:54and I was damned.
-
5:54 - 5:55Next day, the news came.
-
5:55 - 5:58(Hindi) "Surabhi
wants to become a collector." -
5:58 - 5:59(Applause)
-
5:59 - 6:02This news changed, you know,
-
6:02 - 6:05the course of everything
for me after that. -
6:05 - 6:09Everyone was coming to my home
with the sweets, to my parents, -
6:09 - 6:10and they were saying that,
-
6:10 - 6:13(Hindi) "Mr. Gautam, your girl
will achieve something great." -
6:13 - 6:15I was enjoying all that limelight,
-
6:15 - 6:18but I was not knowing
how to be a collector, -
6:18 - 6:22what a collector is,
and how important he is for society. -
6:24 - 6:26I went into 11th; I took mathematics,
-
6:26 - 6:29and I forgot about all these things.
-
6:29 - 6:33Yeah, I wanted to correct something
that was wrong in my village, -
6:33 - 6:34that was wrong with my education,
-
6:34 - 6:37that was wrong
with the situation of my village, -
6:37 - 6:40that there was no electricity,
there was no proper hospital. -
6:40 - 6:43So I wanted those things
to be on right place, -
6:43 - 6:45but through collector or not through it,
-
6:45 - 6:46I was not clear.
-
6:46 - 6:48Well, I passed 12th,
-
6:48 - 6:51and I got APJ Abdul Kalam Scholarship
-
6:51 - 6:53for securing maximum marks
in science stream. -
6:53 - 6:56So again, one more
pseudo-celebrity status. -
6:56 - 7:01And with all this status,
I came to this big city of Bhopal, -
7:01 - 7:02in this very college
-
7:02 - 7:05and took admission
for Bachelor of Engineering. -
7:05 - 7:06(Applause)
-
7:06 - 7:09This decision of my parents to send me
-
7:09 - 7:14from the village to a big city
for higher education -
7:14 - 7:15was a big decision
-
7:15 - 7:19because I was the first girl
from my village to go out and study. -
7:19 - 7:22So it was not only I
who was studying here; -
7:22 - 7:24it was the whole village along with me.
-
7:24 - 7:26If I [didn't] come back,
-
7:26 - 7:29the hopes of all other girls,
the door for all other girls -
7:29 - 7:31will close automatically.
-
7:31 - 7:34So I had to perform here anyhow.
-
7:34 - 7:38Well, the first day of my college
was the worst day of my college, -
7:38 - 7:40to be frank, because what happened,
-
7:40 - 7:41when I entered the college,
-
7:41 - 7:43there was chemistry lab that was going on.
-
7:43 - 7:46I entered the class,
and the ma'am was taking the lab. -
7:46 - 7:50She asked me, "OK,
you go and do titration." -
7:50 - 7:52Titration.
-
7:52 - 7:54In my village, there was no lab.
-
7:54 - 7:57I do not know the meaning
of titration in Hindi. -
7:57 - 7:59So I was standing there blank.
-
8:00 - 8:01Again, I looked at ma'am.
-
8:01 - 8:04She asked me, "Go there
and pick up the test tube." -
8:04 - 8:07First time in my life
I'd seen the test tube, -
8:07 - 8:10and I took that, and it broke.
-
8:10 - 8:13And I was like, "Oh my God,
what I have done!" -
8:13 - 8:18Anyhow, I was hiding behind something
so that ma'am should not notice me. -
8:18 - 8:20And I passed one hour.
-
8:20 - 8:23Then the next class: engineering physics.
-
8:24 - 8:27Introductions were going on,
and everyone was standing -
8:27 - 8:30and fluently answering,
giving their introduction in English, -
8:30 - 8:32and I was freezing in my seat,
-
8:32 - 8:35that when my turn will come,
what am I supposed to do? -
8:35 - 8:36What will I say?
-
8:36 - 8:37I do not know English at all.
-
8:37 - 8:40I'm from a Hindi medium school;
how will I introduce myself? -
8:40 - 8:43I was stealing words
from everyone's introduction, -
8:43 - 8:46and anyhow I jotted down the words
and gave my introduction. -
8:46 - 8:48And I thought, "OK, this has passed."
-
8:48 - 8:50But the sir was not patient enough.
-
8:50 - 8:51He asked me one more question.
-
8:51 - 8:55He asked me: "OK. Tell me
the definition of potential." -
8:55 - 8:57OK, the basic question of physics.
-
8:57 - 9:02I have got APJ Abdul Kalam scholarship
for scoring maximum marks in physics, PCM. -
9:03 - 9:06But I had to answer this in English.
-
9:06 - 9:08And I cannot frame a sentence -
-
9:08 - 9:10a single sentence in English.
-
9:10 - 9:13So I just stood there and I kept mum.
-
9:13 - 9:15Teacher came to me and he said,
-
9:15 - 9:17"Have you really completed your 12th?
-
9:17 - 9:18Have you really passed it?
-
9:18 - 9:21You cannot answer this very basic
question of physics." -
9:21 - 9:24Only I knew how much I loved physics.
-
9:24 - 9:27I'm not answering this
not because I do not know physics, -
9:27 - 9:29it is because I do not know English.
-
9:29 - 9:31But this all was going on in my mind only.
-
9:31 - 9:33I was not able to speak anything.
-
9:33 - 9:37Well, I came back to my room,
and I wept, you know, I cried. -
9:37 - 9:40I just wanted to pack my bag
and go back to my village, -
9:40 - 9:42no more higher education, nothing else.
-
9:42 - 9:43This city is not meant for me.
-
9:43 - 9:45This college is not meant for me.
-
9:45 - 9:47These people are not meant for me.
-
9:47 - 9:48I called my parents.
-
9:48 - 9:52That day they played
the role of Jambavan - -
9:52 - 9:55the role that Jambavan
played for Hanuman, -
9:55 - 9:57reminding him all of his great past
-
9:57 - 10:00that "No, you can fight. No, you can fly."
-
10:00 - 10:03They told me that,
"OK, you come back, but see, -
10:03 - 10:06you are closing the door
of all other girls of your village. -
10:06 - 10:07So you had to take up a decision."
-
10:07 - 10:09Well, I picked the point,
-
10:09 - 10:10and I decided to fight,
-
10:10 - 10:12and I decided that by the end
of this semester -
10:12 - 10:14I'm going to be fluent in English.
-
10:15 - 10:16Well, I took my engineering books,
-
10:16 - 10:19I jotted down all the spellings
and everything, -
10:19 - 10:20I pasted them on my wall,
-
10:20 - 10:23and all my walls were colored
with the spellings, -
10:23 - 10:26and I was always on the revision mode.
-
10:26 - 10:28And it went deep inside
my subconscious mind -
10:28 - 10:32that, you know, that my dreams
also were in English after that, -
10:32 - 10:34with all the characters speech ...
-
10:34 - 10:36(Applause)
-
10:36 - 10:38And in the first semester, I topped -
-
10:38 - 10:39I topped not only my college,
-
10:39 - 10:41but I topped the whole university,
-
10:41 - 10:44and I got Chancellor's
scholarship for that. -
10:44 - 10:48That day - that day I had this belief
-
10:48 - 10:52that if you really want
to achieve something anyhow, you know, -
10:52 - 10:54you do not have any means,
-
10:54 - 10:56because when I wanted
to improve my English, -
10:56 - 10:58I was not able to take coaching,
-
10:58 - 11:00and I was not having
any English medium friend, -
11:00 - 11:02so I was totally unarmed.
-
11:02 - 11:05But I do not know
how the universe conspired, -
11:05 - 11:09and I finally was able to give
a TED Talk even on this platform. -
11:09 - 11:11Well, the college passed,
-
11:11 - 11:14and I completed my college
when I was twenty and a half, -
11:14 - 11:18so you need 21 years
as the minimum age for UPSC exam. -
11:18 - 11:23So meanwhile, I wrote GATE exam,
ISRO exam, BARC exam, -
11:23 - 11:25SAIL exam, and PPSC exam,
-
11:25 - 11:28and after six months, I wrote IES exam.
-
11:28 - 11:31And my dear friends,
I qualified all of them. -
11:31 - 11:34(Applause)
-
11:34 - 11:38Then the first call letter that I got,
-
11:38 - 11:41that was from Bhabha Atomic
Research Centre, -
11:41 - 11:43Department of Atomic Energy, Mumbai.
-
11:43 - 11:45So I was very excited.
-
11:45 - 11:46OK, I'm going to give this highly -
-
11:46 - 11:49you know, touted as one of the most,
the first interview of India. -
11:49 - 11:52So I was about to appear
in that interview. -
11:52 - 11:55I consulted some of my seniors
about how it can be, -
11:55 - 11:58how should I prepare for it?
-
11:58 - 12:00All I got was negative feedback:
-
12:00 - 12:03See, Surabhi, in whole of our life,
-
12:03 - 12:05we have never seen anybody
qualifying that interview. -
12:05 - 12:07OK, you want to go
to Mumbai for fun, then go, -
12:07 - 12:11but don't have this expectation
that you're going to do anything there. -
12:11 - 12:15Well, this - all this negativity,
I appeared in interview, -
12:15 - 12:17and I was the first scientist
-
12:17 - 12:20to whom I was known
as a scientist in my life. -
12:20 - 12:23So, I qualified that interview
and I shifted to Mumbai, -
12:23 - 12:25and I became a nuclear scientist.
-
12:26 - 12:28Well, I wrote IES exam meanwhile,
-
12:28 - 12:32and it takes one year
for the results to come. -
12:32 - 12:34After one year, the result came.
-
12:34 - 12:40And I was AIR 1, not from any IIT,
not from any NIT, -
12:40 - 12:42I was from UIT, and I topped the exam.
-
12:42 - 12:45(Applause) (Cheering)
-
12:48 - 12:53I was the first lady in India
to top Engineering Services Exam, -
12:53 - 12:58and my marks were maximum
in the history of UPSC till date. -
12:58 - 13:01(Applause)
-
13:02 - 13:08So finally, after becoming
a Sarkari officer, I resigned from BARC, -
13:08 - 13:11and I joined Indian Railways
through Engineering Service, -
13:11 - 13:14and I went to Secunderabad
for Railways training. -
13:14 - 13:16I was getting a salary;
-
13:16 - 13:18there is no financial problem.
-
13:18 - 13:20You know, I was getting
respect from society. -
13:20 - 13:22So I didn't want to study anymore,
-
13:22 - 13:23no hard work,
-
13:23 - 13:25so all party was waiting for me.
-
13:25 - 13:26And I was very excited,
-
13:26 - 13:28"OK, life is now going
to be a smooth ride, -
13:28 - 13:31no more hard work,
no more sacrifices and all; -
13:31 - 13:32I have done enough."
-
13:32 - 13:35Well, I joined Railways,
and I was thinking to enjoy. -
13:35 - 13:38I was trying hard to enjoy and be happy.
-
13:38 - 13:40But I was not happy.
-
13:40 - 13:43And I was not knowing what is wrong
with all these things. -
13:43 - 13:45So I called my mother, and I asked her,
-
13:45 - 13:48"Why is it happening with me?
Why I am not enjoying all this?" -
13:49 - 13:52She said, "Do you remember
your 10th class interview? -
13:52 - 13:55Have you ever read
that piece of paper again -
13:55 - 13:58that you said you want to be something
or you want to do something -
13:58 - 14:00for your village and all those things?
-
14:00 - 14:04Was this struggle was only
for a Sarkari job or a good salary, -
14:04 - 14:07or was this for something else also?"
-
14:08 - 14:11Well, I really recalled,
and I read this interview again. -
14:11 - 14:14And I don't know how many times
in my life I've read it. -
14:14 - 14:18And I decided to prepare
for civil service examination. -
14:18 - 14:20Well, this examination, I want to say,
-
14:20 - 14:24is one of the toughest exams,
in not only India but in the world. -
14:24 - 14:27Eleven like aspirants appear for this,
-
14:27 - 14:31and mostly it takes four, five
attempts for them to clear. -
14:31 - 14:34Students in Delhi,
if you will go there and see, -
14:34 - 14:36they are giving their 24 hours every day
-
14:36 - 14:38and preparing for this exam.
-
14:39 - 14:44And I was doing the job of Railways,
was deciding to prepare for this exam. -
14:44 - 14:48I was hardly getting three or four hours
from my training to prepare for this exam. -
14:48 - 14:51I could not take leave in training also.
-
14:51 - 14:54So the decision was going to be
a very tough decision for me, -
14:54 - 14:57but with all those things,
I decided to go ahead, -
14:57 - 14:59and I started my preparation.
-
14:59 - 15:04I was mostly on train roaming
for Railway training, so I got a tab, -
15:04 - 15:05and I downloaded all the things,
-
15:05 - 15:07so I started reading online.
-
15:07 - 15:11I read on mobile, I read in my tab,
-
15:11 - 15:13and I was mostly on,
you know, stealing mode. -
15:13 - 15:15I was stealing minutes from hours.
-
15:15 - 15:18And sometimes I felt frustrated;
I felt like giving up. -
15:19 - 15:20Again, I called my mom.
-
15:20 - 15:22She was a continuous mentor for me.
-
15:23 - 15:24So I called her, I said,
-
15:24 - 15:27"See, even after becoming
a Sarkari officer, -
15:27 - 15:30I have to do again all these things,
life is so miserable for me. -
15:30 - 15:33I was never enjoying when I was a child,
-
15:33 - 15:34and today, also when I'm an officer,
-
15:34 - 15:35I'm not enjoying.
-
15:35 - 15:37I'm only doing studies,
-
15:37 - 15:39and I don't know
where it is going to lead. -
15:39 - 15:41Am I going to qualify it or not?
-
15:41 - 15:43I'm not sure, but still
I am again studying, -
15:43 - 15:44studying all the time.
-
15:44 - 15:46She said me one thing,
-
15:46 - 15:50"See, you are 23. When I was 23,
I had three children. -
15:50 - 15:53The youngest of them was 10 months old.
-
15:53 - 15:56I had a family of 30-plus members
to whom I had to cook meal. -
15:56 - 16:00Then I had a job 10 kilometers away
from our village to another village, -
16:00 - 16:02so I had to go and do that also,
-
16:02 - 16:05and then I had allergic skin,
so for that, I had to visit doctor, -
16:05 - 16:08and I have to cover my body all the time.
-
16:08 - 16:11So I had all these problems,
but I never complained. -
16:12 - 16:13You, on the other hand,
-
16:13 - 16:16do not have any social responsibility,
family responsibility, -
16:16 - 16:18all you have is your dream.
-
16:19 - 16:20All you want is to prove for yourself
-
16:20 - 16:23because for others,
you have already proved. -
16:23 - 16:24This is your task. You have to do.
-
16:24 - 16:26And you are saying
life is difficult for you. -
16:26 - 16:29You need to change your lenses better."
-
16:29 - 16:33That day I stopped complaining
mostly, at least with her, -
16:33 - 16:36and I was totally on a mission mode.
-
16:36 - 16:40All my scarcities,
I converted them into my luxuries. -
16:41 - 16:43The more I struggled,
the more strong I became. -
16:43 - 16:48And finally, I got All India Rank 50
in this coveted exam - -
16:48 - 16:50Civil Services Examination 2016.
-
16:50 - 16:52(Applause)
-
16:52 - 16:54To summarize:
-
16:54 - 16:56At last, I believed in these words.
-
16:56 - 16:59These words truly tell my story.
-
16:59 - 17:02And I also want to convey
these words to you also, -
17:03 - 17:07"There is no substitute for hard work,
and there is no shortcut to success." -
17:09 - 17:11And my own four lines that I wrote -
-
17:11 - 17:13I want to say (Hindi),
-
17:13 - 17:18"Had I mourned for what I had not got -
Had I mourned for what I had not got -
17:19 - 17:22I wouldn't have been able
to improve in the opportunities I got. -
17:22 - 17:27It is stubbornness to fight
with fate and achieve something. -
17:27 - 17:29These things would not
have arisen in me like this. -
17:29 - 17:31But it was my promise
to myself to keep on moving -
17:31 - 17:34I also mourned about getting nothing.
-
17:34 - 17:39But it was my promise
to myself to keep on moving. -
17:39 - 17:42Whatever my steps measured is less.
-
17:42 - 17:45Whatever my steps measured is less.
-
17:45 - 17:47This is the secret
to reach your destination. -
17:47 - 17:49This is the secret
to reach your destination." -
17:49 - 17:52(Applause)
-
17:56 - 17:59Thanks for being such a patient
and such a good audience. -
17:59 - 18:02Thanks TED and thanks to everyone.
-
18:02 - 18:05(Applause) (Cheering)
