Dutch students are living rent free for socialising with the elderly

  • 0:43 - 1:12
    [Music]
  • 1:12 - 1:31
    [Soft piano music]
  • 1:31 - 1:33
    >>Like most of us,
  • 1:33 - 1:36
    I’m afraid of getting old
  • 1:36 - 1:37
    and of the loneliness
  • 1:37 - 1:39
that seems to come with old age.
  • 1:39 - 1:42
  • 1:42 - 1:46
But maybe things don’t have to be that way.
  • 1:46 - 1:50
  • 1:50 - 1:52
    Jordi is a young artist.
  • 1:52 - 1:53
    >>Hello. Come in.
  • 1:53 - 1:56
    >>And he lives in a unique old folk’s home
  • 1:56 - 1:58
    in the Netherlands.
  • 1:58 - 2:00
  • 2:00 - 2:02
He paints and creates craft projects,
  • 2:02 - 2:05
like this table he made from a piano crate.
  • 2:05 - 2:07
    And you do that a lot with the residents;
  • 2:07 - 2:08
    you make crafts and things.
  • 2:08 - 2:09
    >>Yeah. I try to do it.
  • 2:09 - 2:11
    >>And is that a picture of your family?
  • 2:11 - 2:12
    Can you show me?
  • 2:12 - 2:15
    >>My grandfather and my grandma
  • 2:15 - 2:16
    when I was younger.
  • 2:16 - 2:18
  • 2:18 - 2:19
    >>It’s adorable.
  • 2:19 - 2:20
    >>Yeah. I love them.
  • 2:20 - 2:24
    I love them a lot.
  • 2:24 - 2:24
    >>Is it . . .
  • 2:24 - 2:26
Is the relationship with your grandparents
  • 2:26 - 2:29
that helps you be so good with the elderly here?
  • 2:29 - 2:31
    >>I think also because they . . .
  • 2:31 - 2:35
they teach me so much good things,
  • 2:35 - 2:39
how to go around to people that uh . . .
  • 2:39 - 2:42
    Yeah. Nah. Everything.
  • 2:42 - 2:44
  • 2:44 - 2:45
    >>Not long ago,
  • 2:45 - 2:48
the Dutch senior citizens who live at Humanitas
  • 2:48 - 2:50
invited Jordi and five other students
  • 2:50 - 2:53
    to move in rent-free.
  • 2:53 - 2:56
The students all told me that living here
  • 2:56 - 2:58
    is nothing like you’d expect.
  • 2:58 - 3:23
  • 3:23 - 3:25
    >>One of Jordi’s favorite ways
  • 3:25 - 3:27
to spend time with his neighbors
  • 3:27 - 3:29
is by taking them around the town of DeVanter
  • 3:29 - 3:32
    by a specialized tandem bicycle.
  • 3:32 - 3:34
It’s just one of the ways that Humanitas
  • 3:34 - 3:37
tries to make life in its community
  • 3:37 - 3:38
    a little more fun.
  • 3:38 - 3:59
  • 3:59 - 4:01
    >>It was CEO’s Gea Sijpkes idea
  • 4:01 - 4:04
to offer these students rooms at Humanitas.
  • 4:04 - 4:06
And all she asked in return
  • 4:06 - 4:07
    was that the students spend
  • 4:07 - 4:10
at least 30 hours a month
  • 4:10 - 4:14
acting neighborly to the senior residents.
  • 4:14 - 4:21
  • 4:21 - 4:24
Jurrien Mentink says that Humanitas’ offer
  • 4:24 - 4:26
couldn’t have come at a better time.
  • 4:26 - 4:27
    Many Dutch students
  • 4:27 - 4:30
    in and around Amsterdam today
  • 4:30 - 4:32
can’t find a room to rent at all.
  • 4:32 - 4:33
    >>Now I have to cook dinner.
  • 4:33 - 4:34
    >>Yes.
  • 4:34 - 4:51
  • 4:51 - 4:54
    >>Jurrien is 22 years old,
  • 4:54 - 4:56
and his neighbors, like Joke Van Beek,
  • 4:56 - 4:59
are in their 80’s and 90’s.
  • 4:59 - 5:00
  • 5:00 - 5:02
    Despite the age gap,
  • 5:02 - 5:04
Jurrien and Joke’s friendship is a dynamic
  • 5:04 - 5:08
that often seems like it’s between two teenagers.
  • 5:08 - 5:59
  • 5:59 - 6:01
    >>Friendships like this one
  • 6:01 - 6:04
are exactly what Humanitas is trying to nurture.
  • 6:04 - 6:14
  • 6:14 - 6:17
How Jurrien spends his 30 hours a month
  • 6:17 - 6:20
of service is up to him.
  • 6:20 - 6:24
His official title isn’t staff or volunteer.
  • 6:24 - 6:26
    It’s good neighbor.
  • 6:26 - 6:37
  • 6:37 - 6:39
    >>At Humanitas,
  • 6:39 - 6:42
good neighbor somehow means being part local,
  • 6:42 - 6:43
    part friend,
  • 6:43 - 6:44
    part grandchild,
  • 6:44 - 6:46
    part social worker,
  • 6:46 - 6:48
    part healthcare provider,
  • 6:48 - 6:50
  • 6:50 - 6:53
and some days it means teaching
  • 6:53 - 6:56
an 84-year-old woman to play beer pong.
  • 6:56 - 7:42
  • 7:42 - 7:54
    [Rock music]
  • 7:54 - 8:45
  • 8:46 - 8:48
    >>I noticed early on that the students here
  • 8:48 - 8:52
often talk with a sort of calm beyond their years.
  • 8:52 - 8:56
They don’t often seem much of a hurry.
  • 8:56 - 8:57
Jurrien says that is one of the most
  • 8:57 - 8:59
    important life lessons
  • 8:59 - 9:00
    the students have learned
  • 9:00 - 9:02
    from their elderly neighbors.
  • 9:02 - 9:29
  • 9:30 - 9:32
The students all talk about Mrs. Hofsteede
  • 9:32 - 9:35
    as a role model
  • 9:35 - 9:36
  • 9:36 - 9:41
for living a full and happy life in later years.
  • 9:41 - 9:43
She moved in a few years ago.
  • 9:43 - 9:52
  • 9:52 - 9:54
She lives on the seventh floor
  • 9:54 - 9:57
in a spacious room overlooking the park,
  • 9:57 - 9:59
and she says she feel younger
  • 9:59 - 10:02
    than her 88 years.
  • 10:02 - 10:04
    >>Hello.
  • 10:04 - 10:13
  • 10:13 - 10:16
    >>At lunch time, the most social time,
  • 10:16 - 10:18
    every day at Humanitas,
  • 10:18 - 10:22
Mrs. Hofsteede always sits at the same table.
  • 10:22 - 10:24
You see, the Humanitas dining room
  • 10:24 - 10:27
is a lot like a high school cafeteria.
  • 10:27 - 10:30
    Mrs. Hofsteede is quite popular,
  • 10:30 - 10:31
    and so she always sits
  • 10:31 - 10:34
    with the other popular girls,
  • 10:34 - 10:36
    like her best friend Antonia,
  • 10:36 - 10:40
whose nickname is “the trash compacter.”
  • 10:40 - 10:41
    >>Appetite.
  • 10:41 - 10:42
    >>Yeah?
  • 10:42 - 10:43
    >>I like that.
  • 10:43 - 11:17
  • 11:17 - 11:19
    >>And like high school,
  • 11:19 - 11:21
lunchtime is when the rumor mill
  • 11:21 - 11:23
    really starts to turn.
  • 11:23 - 11:25
Outside of the time they volunteer,
  • 11:25 - 11:27
the students are free to live
  • 11:27 - 11:29
    without any special restrictions,
  • 11:29 - 11:32
going out or bringing people home
  • 11:32 - 11:33
    just as they like.
  • 11:33 - 12:13
  • 12:13 - 12:14
    >>And there’s a lot more flirting
  • 12:14 - 12:16
that goes on than I expected to find
  • 12:16 - 12:18
    in an old folk’s home.
  • 12:18 - 12:52
  • 12:52 - 12:53
    >>The students all like
  • 12:53 - 12:55
teaching their senior neighbors a lesson
  • 12:55 - 12:58
    from time to time.
  • 12:58 - 13:02
  • 13:02 - 13:03
    Everything Mrs. Middelburg knows
  • 13:03 - 13:06
about the internet she learned from Jurrien.
  • 13:06 - 13:27
  • 13:27 - 13:30
    >>But Jurrien says that none of this feels
  • 13:30 - 13:33
    like some community service.
  • 13:33 - 13:36
He and Mrs. Middelburg just like hanging out.
  • 13:36 - 14:11
  • 14:11 - 14:13
    >>And how do Jurrien's own family
  • 14:13 - 14:16
feel about him living here at Humanitas?
  • 14:16 - 14:18
  • 14:18 - 14:20
His parents have been as surprised
  • 14:20 - 14:22
as he has been to find that Jurrien
  • 14:22 - 14:24
    seems very happy here indeed.
  • 14:24 - 14:46
  • 14:46 - 14:47
    >>There is, of course,
  • 14:47 - 14:49
    the unavoidable loneliness
  • 14:49 - 14:52
    that accompanies dementia.
  • 14:52 - 14:54
    The dementia ward is equipped
  • 14:54 - 14:57
    with everything you could expect.
  • 14:57 - 14:58
But it has little of the warmth
  • 14:58 - 15:03
of the rest of the residents.
  • 15:03 - 15:05
    Jordi feels an added responsibility
  • 15:05 - 15:07
    to help those suffering dementia.
  • 15:07 - 15:46
  • 15:46 - 15:49
    >>Lucius is this man’s stage name,
  • 15:49 - 15:52
but I was never given another one,
  • 15:52 - 15:55
and I never got the chance to ask.
  • 15:55 - 15:57
We didn’t get to talk for very long.
  • 15:57 - 15:59
Lucius lost the ability to talk much
  • 15:59 - 16:01
    about the here and now.
  • 16:01 - 16:11
  • 16:11 - 16:13
    >>I saw in Lucius immediately
  • 16:13 - 16:16
    the kind of kindred spirit,
  • 16:16 - 16:19
and it was like a glimpse of a possible future self
  • 16:19 - 16:24
set adrift in my own fading memories.
  • 16:24 - 16:27
Having exchanged barely a word with him,
  • 16:27 - 16:30
meeting Lucius affected me a great deal.
  • 16:30 - 16:40
  • 16:40 - 16:42
The hardest thing about living here,
  • 16:42 - 16:44
    old or young,
  • 16:44 - 16:49
is how often death comes to call.
  • 16:49 - 16:51
Some of the seniors are still racked
  • 16:51 - 16:54
with intense longing for lost loved ones.
  • 16:54 - 17:13
  • 17:13 - 17:16
While many others, like Mrs. Middelburg,
  • 17:16 - 17:19
seem almost unfazed by the realities of death.
  • 17:19 - 17:35
  • 17:35 - 17:38
A few of the students had never seen death
  • 17:38 - 17:41
    up close before living here.
  • 17:41 - 17:43
For them, facing death has been the hardest
  • 17:43 - 17:45
    and maybe most valuable lesson
  • 17:46 - 17:47
    that Humanitas has taught them.
  • 17:47 - 18:32
  • 18:32 - 18:34
    Jurrien is about to graduate
  • 18:34 - 18:38
from a degree in urban planning,
  • 18:38 - 18:41
but he is now considering devoting his career
  • 18:41 - 18:43
    to old age care instead.
  • 18:43 - 18:53
  • 18:53 - 18:54
    No matter which direction
  • 18:54 - 18:56
    he chooses from here,
  • 18:56 - 18:58
    Jurrien won’t forget the importance
  • 18:58 - 18:59
    of being a good neighbor,
  • 18:59 - 19:03
like he has been to Joke Van Beek.
  • 19:03 - 19:04
    That day he told me
  • 19:04 - 19:07
that he had started to see the signs
  • 19:07 - 19:09
    of Joke slipping away,
  • 19:09 - 19:12
and then only a few weeks later,
  • 19:12 - 19:14
    Joke passed on.
  • 19:14 - 19:16
And I know that Jurrien has missed her
  • 19:16 - 19:18
    since she’s been gone.
  • 19:18 - 19:24
  • 19:24 - 19:26
It took me a litttle while to grab hold
  • 19:26 - 19:28
of what makes this place different
  • 19:28 - 19:31
    than anywhere else I’ve been.
  • 19:32 - 19:34
    Humanitas hasn’t somehow
  • 19:34 - 19:37
cut out the hard realities of aging.
  • 19:37 - 19:41
It’s just that it lets so much more than that
  • 19:41 - 19:43
    through its front door.
  • 19:43 - 19:45
  • 19:45 - 19:46
As I went to say goodbye
  • 19:46 - 19:48
on the last day of my visit,
  • 19:48 - 19:51
I passed by the weekly wheelchair dance recital.
  • 19:51 - 19:55
    [Clapping and music]
  • 19:55 - 19:56
    This was the other moment
  • 19:56 - 19:58
    that really stayed with me.
  • 19:58 - 20:03
    [Upbeat Dutch music]
  • 20:03 - 20:05
    Again, I could see myself
  • 20:05 - 20:09
reflected back years on from now,
  • 20:09 - 20:10
    and for that moment,
  • 20:10 - 20:13
I really didn’t mind the idea of getting old.
  • 20:13 - 20:14
  • 20:14 - 20:24
    [Upbeat Dutch music]
  • 20:24 - 20:39
