Distributive property for multiplying two digits by one digit | Khan Academy

  • 0:00 - 0:02
    - [Instructor] We're told
    to complete the equations.
  • 0:02 - 0:04
    They have 34 times 8,
  • 0:04 - 0:08
    and then they have something
    times 8, plus 4 times 8.
  • 0:08 - 0:09
Then, they add all that stuff together
  • 0:09 - 0:11
and then they get to something else.
  • 0:11 - 0:11
    So pause this video
  • 0:11 - 0:14
    and think about what
    should be in these blanks.
  • 0:14 - 0:16
    All right, so let's just
    think about this first thing.
  • 0:16 - 0:17
    And sometimes, when you see
  • 0:17 - 0:19
all of these blanks and parentheses,
  • 0:19 - 0:20
it can get a little confusing,
  • 0:20 - 0:21
but if you just try to break down,
  • 0:21 - 0:23
how would you try to actually tackle this?
  • 0:23 - 0:28
    Well, you could actually view
    34 times 8 as 30 times 8,
  • 0:29 - 0:32
    plus 4 times 8.
  • 0:32 - 0:34
And another way to think about it is
  • 0:34 - 0:38
34 is the same thing as 30 plus 4.
  • 0:38 - 0:40
    30 plus 4.
  • 0:40 - 0:43
And we're multiplying that times 8.
  • 0:43 - 0:45
    So we're gonna multiply
    that whole thing times 8.
  • 0:45 - 0:47
And so, then, if you apply
    the distributive property,
  • 0:47 - 0:50
    that's going to be 30 times 8.
  • 0:50 - 0:54
    So 30 times 8,
  • 0:56 - 0:58
    plus 4 times 8.
  • 0:58 - 1:01
    Plus 4 times 8.
  • 1:01 - 1:04
    So 4 times 8.
  • 1:05 - 1:09
And so, what do we have right
over here in this first step?
  • 1:09 - 1:12
    Well, they have something
    times 8, plus 4 times 8.
  • 1:12 - 1:15
So that something is going to be 30.
  • 1:15 - 1:18
And you can even verify that
    because, in this next step,
  • 1:18 - 1:23
you can see that the 4 times
8 is this 32 right over here.
  • 1:23 - 1:26
    And you could say, well,
    what times 8 is 240?
  • 1:26 - 1:27
We can see that's definitely 30 times 8.
  • 1:27 - 1:31
    3 times eight is 24, so 30 times 8 is 240.
  • 1:31 - 1:34
So that is the same thing as that.
  • 1:34 - 1:36
    So I know it's sometimes
    a little bit complicated,
  • 1:36 - 1:38
but just try to see what you would do
  • 1:38 - 1:39
if you were doing distributive property,
  • 1:39 - 1:43
    and then you'll see what
numbers you might wanna fill in.
  • 1:43 - 1:47
Now, this last step, we just
have to add 240 plus 32.
  • 1:47 - 1:48
You might be able to do that in your head.
  • 1:48 - 1:53
    240 plus 30 is 270, plus another 2 is 272.
  • 1:54 - 1:56
If we want, we could write it out here.
  • 1:56 - 1:58
    240 plus 32.
  • 1:58 - 2:01
In the ones place, 0 plus 2 is 2.
  • 2:01 - 2:04
    Tens place, four tens plus
    three tens is seven tens.
  • 2:04 - 2:07
And then, we have two hundreds, 272.
