Text Wraps, Spelling, Hyphenation, Transforming

  • Not Synced
Okay. So this will be our tutorial
    about using text wraps,
  • Not Synced
    hyphenation, spell check, and transform.
  • Not Synced
So when we're thinking of image and text,
  • Not Synced
    we have some
    really cool options in InDesign
  • Not Synced
to allow them to work together,
    that saves you some time.
  • Not Synced
    We're thinking always
    of being the most efficient.
  • Not Synced
Once you have your techniques, you want
to think about expediting your process
  • Not Synced
so that you can make work um,
    as efficiently as possible.
  • Not Synced
    So let's start with thinking
    about text wrap.
  • Not Synced
So a text wrap is when you're thinking
    about the interaction of text,
  • Not Synced
so here is my text frame,
  • Not Synced
and image, so here's my image frame.
  • Not Synced
Of course, we know that our image frame,
  • Not Synced
here I can see the image
    is actually quite large
  • Not Synced
    with this yellow orange
    kind of bounding box.
  • Not Synced
    That tells me
that the image is really big,
  • Not Synced
but of course, it's inside a frame
  • Not Synced
and if I want to use
the content grabber to edit, I can.
  • Not Synced
So that is a big image,
but it's kind of isolated to this page
  • Not Synced
and I have my text. So the way
    to think about using text
  • Not Synced
and um, text wrap, is a consideration
of how you want the text to flow
  • Not Synced
    around any particular image.
  • Not Synced
    Now in this rectangular case,
  • Not Synced
it's pretty easy to just kind of
    line up my text frame
  • Not Synced
to be in a position where it feels
like it's flowing around the image.
  • Not Synced
    But these two objects
    aren't really connected together.
  • Not Synced
    So another more interesting way
  • Not Synced
is to think about using text wrap,
  • Not Synced
and the way I'm going to show it to you
  • Not Synced
is by changing the shape of this.
  • Not Synced
You really get an idea of how it works.
  • Not Synced
So the first thing I'm going to do is
  • Not Synced
I'm just going to make this
    a non rectangular image,
  • Not Synced
so I'm going to change the frame.
  • Not Synced
And I'm going to do that, make sure
    you're not clicked on anything.
  • Not Synced
I'm going to grab my direct selection tool
  • Not Synced
because I just want to edit
    this one little corner.
  • Not Synced
So I've clicked on that corner
and I'm going to shift it over.
  • Not Synced
So I'm just going to kind of create
you know, some sort of a diagonal.
  • Not Synced
    This will just reveal
    the text wrap to you,
  • Not Synced
more so than if it was rectangular.
  • Not Synced
It's also kind of a nice design.
  • Not Synced
    So now, the trick
    with thinking about text wrap
  • Not Synced
is it's something that you actually apply
  • Not Synced
to the image, not to the text.
  • Not Synced
That's the one little conceptual trick
here uh, that's kind of hard to remember.
  • Not Synced
    So, here's my text.
  • Not Synced
Let's imagine I'm going to kind of
let it wrap around the edge of the image,
  • Not Synced
both with my title and with
the actual kind of information here.
  • Not Synced
So I'm going to click on the actual image
  • Not Synced
    using my regular selection tool,
  • Not Synced
    because remember,
    that grabs the bounding box.
  • Not Synced
And then, you'll see an opportunity
  • Not Synced
inside your Properties panel down here
    called Text Wrap.
  • Not Synced
    Now again, really important.
If you're using your other selection tool,
  • Not Synced
oh, actually using the other one
    brings it up too,
  • Not Synced
    so if for some reason
    you didn't see it though,
  • Not Synced
I just always kind of default
    to my regular selection tool.
  • Not Synced
  • Not Synced
And then you'll see your text wrap.
  • Not Synced
    So, first opportunity here
    is no text wrap,
  • Not Synced
so that's what it's currently set at.
  • Not Synced
You can see it's a little bit darker.
  • Not Synced
Here, if we wrap around the bounding box,
  • Not Synced
    remembering that I changed
the bounding box, look what happens.
  • Not Synced
It has shifted my text to kind of
    match this angle right here.
  • Not Synced
    Oops, I just zoomed in
    on the actual image
  • Not Synced
instead of the frame, there you go.
  • Not Synced
    So now it's done that,
  • Not Synced
if I want to use some offsets,
  • Not Synced
which in this case is just one offset
to kind of space it out,
  • Not Synced
I could always increase some spacing.
  • Not Synced
    Oops, Command Z,
let me get back here a little bit.
  • Not Synced
Use some spacing on this image
to kind of bump this around.
  • Not Synced
So I'm going to click off
and just zoom myself out a little bit.
  • Not Synced
So again, I'm on the image.
  • Not Synced
If I apply a text wrap, I'm going
to go back in time here.
  • Not Synced
There's my text wrap, which is
    a wrap around bounding box.
  • Not Synced
If I need to increase the spacing
then I'm going to use an offset.
  • Not Synced
So this is an offset number.
  • Not Synced
It'll usually limit you to just doing
  • Not Synced
    whatever one works for
that particular bounding or text wrap,
  • Not Synced
which in this case is a top offset,
  • Not Synced
but it's sort of shifting things
    left to right.
  • Not Synced
Now notice what's happening with also
the title of this kind of article.
  • Not Synced
    It is getting overset.
  • Not Synced
I'm kind of missing out on some
of my text with this little red thing.
  • Not Synced
So of course, I can increase the size
of this text frame so that it also works,
  • Not Synced
    but it's shifting this
    according to the text wrap.
  • Not Synced
So that is a text wrap
    with a bounding box.
  • Not Synced
    Very interesting, clever way--
the, of working with text and image.
  • Not Synced
The other thing you can do,
    you don't necessarily have
  • Not Synced
to have it working with an image.
  • Not Synced
You can use text wrap with any object.
  • Not Synced
    So here's another object.
  • Not Synced
This is something I drew really quickly
  • Not Synced
and I actually just used the pen tool.
  • Not Synced
    Here we go, you're familiar
    with the pen tool.
  • Not Synced
You can use the pen tool in InDesign.
  • Not Synced
You can also use it in Illustrator.
  • Not Synced
If you're drawing something more complex,
  • Not Synced
then of course you can place
    your object inside InDesign.
  • Not Synced
So here, I have some text
and this kind of custom shape.
  • Not Synced
    Let's imagine
it's a poorly drawn guitar of some sort.
  • Not Synced
    Uh, let's think about
    the kind of text wrap
  • Not Synced
we could do with these two objects.
  • Not Synced
So I am again, make sure
    you don't have anything selected.
  • Not Synced
Get your black arrow selection tool,
  • Not Synced
    go to the object itself
  • Not Synced
    to determine what kind
    of text wrap you want.
  • Not Synced
Here's the one we did before
    around the bounding box.
  • Not Synced
    Remember, this is actually in
    a bounding box that's square.
  • Not Synced
So that's not going to help us at all.
  • Not Synced
What I want us to think about instead
  • Not Synced
    is wrapping around
    the object that I've drawn.
  • Not Synced
So if I use wrap around object,
    look what's happened.
  • Not Synced
Now I have this lovely little flow
  • Not Synced
around the side of the object.
  • Not Synced
Of course, if I move my text frame around,
    it's going to keep flowing
  • Not Synced
and the positioning of the text
    will flow around that object.
  • Not Synced
If I change the size of the object,
    of course,
  • Not Synced
it's just going to keep flowing.
  • Not Synced
    Now, other opportunity is maybe
  • Not Synced
    we don't want to be
on the outside of this object.
  • Not Synced
    Perhaps we want to be
on the inside of the object.
  • Not Synced
    In that case, you have
    an invert button here.
  • Not Synced
So if I invert and also
make sure I grab my text,
  • Not Synced
so I'm going to use my black arrow.
  • Not Synced
I'm going to move the text
    so that it's actually
  • Not Synced
in the space of the object.
  • Not Synced
And perhaps I need to make
my text frame a little bit wider.
  • Not Synced
Bring it in a little bit here.
  • Not Synced
And I'm, that top line looks like it's,
    there we go.
  • Not Synced
Bring that down a little bit.
  • Not Synced
So now I have done a text wrap
  • Not Synced
around an object and inverted it
  • Not Synced
so that it's actually inside the object.
  • Not Synced
So that is wrap around object shape,
    invert.
  • Not Synced
You also have um, jump object,
    jump to next column.
  • Not Synced
Those are a little bit more if you're uh,
    doing column based design work.
  • Not Synced
I think the most useful for you currently
  • Not Synced
is the wrap around bounding box
    or wrap around object shape,
  • Not Synced
thinking about how to invert it.
  • Not Synced
Again, if you don't want to do it,
  • Not Synced
    then you can always just
go back to this no text wrap
  • Not Synced
and now you're back to the basics
    where they aren't interacting together.
  • Not Synced
So those are your text wrap options,
    very fun.
  • Not Synced
Uh, the other thing I want to show you
  • Not Synced
    is to just pay attention
    to what is hyphenated.
  • Not Synced
If you're writing out a lot of text
  • Not Synced
and you're breaking on a line,
  • Not Synced
it's going to create a hyphenation,
  • Not Synced
    so here's a hyphen, here's a hyphen,
  • Not Synced
    here's a hyphen, here's a hyphen.
  • Not Synced
    Sometimes that's a really
    kind of annoying thing
  • Not Synced
    when you're a viewer or a reader.
  • Not Synced
Just seeing a bunch of hyphens
along the edge is kind of a bad design.
  • Not Synced
It can get kind of um,
    irritating on your eyes.
  • Not Synced
So if you want to turn that off,
  • Not Synced
    I recommend turning that off
and it's just a really simple setting.
  • Not Synced
    If you scroll down
    in your Properties panel,
  • Not Synced
you have to be on a text frame
  • Not Synced
    because otherwise it won't have
all the opportunities, but scroll down.
  • Not Synced
    Under this paragraph right here
    where you have paragraph options,
  • Not Synced
    you know, you've got center,
    justification, etc.,
  • Not Synced
    we have a hyphenate button.
  • Not Synced
So I like to turn that off
and it's just going to move the words down
  • Not Synced
    rather than hyphenate, hyphenate,
    hyphenate all the time.
  • Not Synced
    That's hyphenation.
  • Not Synced
The other thing I want you
to pay attention to is your spelling.
  • Not Synced
    There is nothing worse
than looking at a beautiful design
  • Not Synced
that has a bunch of spelling errors,
  • Not Synced
because they become these little kind of
  • Not Synced
    just nuisances to your brain.
  • Not Synced
    So, you can, of course,
check your spelling in a word document.
  • Not Synced
Particularly if you have a lot of text,
  • Not Synced
use that kind of word document program,
  • Not Synced
    whatever it might be,
    to check your spelling.
  • Not Synced
    Or if you're just going
    to type into InDesign,
  • Not Synced
we do have a spellcheck feature.
  • Not Synced
    So grab your text frame.
  • Not Synced
    Actually you don't even need
    to grab a text frame.
  • Not Synced
You can go right into it.
    It's under the Edit menu.
  • Not Synced
    Spelling, Check Spelling.
  • Not Synced
    This will go through like
a normal kind of text editor
  • Not Synced
    kind of word processing document
  • Not Synced
and check all of your spelling.
  • Not Synced
Suggested, you can commit to it,
you can skip it, ignore it, etc.
  • Not Synced
When you're finished, you can hit Done.
  • Not Synced
    So please check your spelling
    on your work.
  • Not Synced
    Um, that again is just
    Edit, Spelling, Check Spelling.
  • Not Synced
You can also do Dynamic Spelling.
That'll watch it as you type.
  • Not Synced
That's an opportunity for you if you
like that kind of um, spelling work.
  • Not Synced
Okay, so we've done text wraps,
    hyphenation, spelling.
  • Not Synced
The only other thing I'm going to show you
  • Not Synced
that people often like to do,
  • Not Synced
because we've done it in other programs,
    is to flip things.
  • Not Synced
    So if you've been experimenting
  • Not Synced
    with flipping images
    horizontally or vertically
  • Not Synced
    in Illustrator or Photoshop,
  • Not Synced
we can do the same here.
  • Not Synced
So let's do it on this
    actual image of the waves.
  • Not Synced
So the way to do this
    is through transforming.
  • Not Synced
Once you have your file, of course,
  • Not Synced
    and you've grabbed it
    with your selection tool,
  • Not Synced
    top of your properties panel
    is your Transform, up here.
  • Not Synced
    You always want to choose
    the reference point.
  • Not Synced
    So if you're just transforming
vertically or horizontally as a flip,
  • Not Synced
like you were thinking of it in a mirror,
  • Not Synced
    I use the center point,
  • Not Synced
but you could also flip from edges.
  • Not Synced
So you would just simply click on an edge
  • Not Synced
    and that's the reference point
    from which it would flip.
  • Not Synced
But I keep it on the center for ease.
  • Not Synced
    Now of course, you could
think about your X and Y
  • Not Synced
and your rotation and etc., your angle,
  • Not Synced
but the easiest thing, I think, is either
  • Not Synced
    use your rotations
    if that's what you're after
  • Not Synced
    or here's the flipping options.
    Flip horizontal, flip vertical.
  • Not Synced
Kind of gives you a little preview
of how it works in the icons,
  • Not Synced
    so here's a flip horizontal,
    here you see what's happened.
  • Not Synced
    Of course, I may have
    to rethink my text there.
  • Not Synced
    Here's flip vertical.
  • Not Synced
So those, that's how those work,
  • Not Synced
so a very easy opportunity to work
    with your images in InDesign.
