Not Synced
In 1989,
-
Not Synced
an artist by the name of Dread Scott,
-
Not Synced
who has also graced the TED stage,
-
Not Synced
created a piece of art in Chicago
-
Not Synced
where he simply placed
an American flag on the ground
-
Not Synced
and then invited you the viewer
to go and stand on that flag
-
Not Synced
and record how it felt in a journal.
-
Not Synced
And to me, one of the most powerful things
written in that journal in essence says,
-
Not Synced
why are we so OK
-
Not Synced
with homeless people,
-
Not Synced
with human beings laying on the ground,
-
Not Synced
but not flags?
-
Not Synced
And to some of you,
this piece of art is quite disturbing,
-
Not Synced
and that's kind of the point of this talk,
-
Not Synced
not to upset you or to make you mad
-
Not Synced
but to prove to you that flags
have an incredible power,
-
Not Synced
and that even if you think
you don't care about flags, you do.
-
Not Synced
You know you do.
-
Not Synced
All right.
-
Not Synced
By the end of it,
I hope that you're inspired
-
Not Synced
to go out and harness this power of flags
and fight for a better world,
-
Not Synced
but before we get there,
-
Not Synced
we're going to start
on the opposite end of the spectrum,
-
Not Synced
and before I show you the next stuff,
I need to say that anything I show here
-
Not Synced
is not an endorsement,
-
Not Synced
it's usually quite the opposite,
-
Not Synced
but more than anything,
what I want to do is create a space here
-
Not Synced
where we can look
at these flags, these designs,
-
Not Synced
and examine how they make us feel.
-
Not Synced
We're going to talk about our emotions.
-
Not Synced
Is that OK with everybody?
-
Not Synced
OK.
-
Not Synced
You ready for your first flag?
-
Not Synced
Cool, we'll start with an easy one.
-
Not Synced
That was a joke.
-
Not Synced
So, some of you may be a little bit uneasy
sitting in a room with this.
-
Not Synced
I'm certainly feeling uneasy
standing in front of it.
-
Not Synced
Some of you may be feeling
a little bit of pride.
-
Not Synced
And that's understandable. This is Texas.
This is not a rare sight, is it.
-
Not Synced
But let's start with the facts.
-
Not Synced
So this is not the Confederate flag. OK?
-
Not Synced
This is the battle flag
of the Army of Northern Virginia
-
Not Synced
led by General Robert E. Lee,
-
Not Synced
so next time someone tells you
that this is their heritage,
-
Not Synced
unless their family fought
for that very specific militia,
-
Not Synced
they're wrong. All right?
-
Not Synced
And you have a flag expert's
permission to tell them so.
