Can you solve the troll's paradox riddle? - Daniel Finkel
-
0:08 - 0:11You’ve discovered a doorway
to another realm, -
0:11 - 0:13and now you and your brother
-
0:13 - 0:17are off exploring the wonderful
world of Paradoxica. -
0:17 - 0:22Fantastically paradoxical creatures crawl,
run, and fly around you. -
0:22 - 0:25And then you see the troll.
-
0:25 - 0:29It’s catching all the creatures
in an enormous net. -
0:29 - 0:33You bravely step forward
and demand it let them go. -
0:33 - 0:34The troll laughs.
-
0:34 - 0:37“If you’re such a
fan of paradoxes,” it says, -
0:37 - 0:39“then I’ll make you an offer.
-
0:39 - 0:43If you say something true,
I’ll release all these creatures." -
0:43 - 0:46You’re about to say, “You are a troll,”
-
0:46 - 0:49but before you can,
the troll grabs your brother. -
0:49 - 0:51“If you say something false,”
he continues, -
0:51 - 0:54“then I’ll release your brother."
-
0:54 - 0:57Your statement can
only be a single sentence. -
0:57 - 1:01And as you can see,
I hate paradoxes more than anything. -
1:01 - 1:05If you try to cheat
by saying something paradoxical, -
1:05 - 1:07like, ‘this statement is false,’
-
1:07 - 1:11then I'll eat your brother
and the creatures." -
1:11 - 1:14What true/false statement
can you say to force the troll -
1:14 - 1:18to free your brother
and the paradoxical creatures? -
1:18 - 1:19[Pause the video now if you
want to figure it out for yourself!] -
1:19 - 1:21Answer in: 3
-
1:21 - 1:23Answer in: 2
-
1:23 - 1:26Answer in: 1
-
1:26 - 1:29This seems like an impossible situation,
-
1:29 - 1:31but incredibly, you can say something
-
1:31 - 1:34that will force the troll to
release all its prisoners. -
1:34 - 1:37This is an example of coercive logic,
-
1:37 - 1:42invented by the great logician
and puzzle creator Raymond Smullyan. -
1:42 - 1:46The trick Smullyan came up with
involves saying a statement -
1:46 - 1:51whose truth or falseness depends on
what you want the troll to do. -
1:51 - 1:54Your statement still
has to be carefully crafted. -
1:54 - 1:56For example, if you were to say,
-
1:56 - 1:59“You are going to free the
creatures and my brother,” -
1:59 - 2:04the troll could respond, “that’s false…
I’m only going to free your brother.” -
2:04 - 2:07Similarly, if you said, “You will free
the paradoxes,” -
2:07 - 2:11the troll could say, “That’s true,”
and free the paradoxes. -
2:11 - 2:16But watch what happens if you say,
“You will free my brother.” -
2:16 - 2:18The statement can’t be false,
-
2:18 - 2:21because if it were, the troll,
by its own rules, -
2:21 - 2:23would have to free your brother.
-
2:23 - 2:27That would make the statement
paradoxically true and false. -
2:27 - 2:29But the troll hates paradoxes
-
2:29 - 2:32and would never willingly create one.
-
2:32 - 2:36So his only option
is for the statement to be true. -
2:36 - 2:38If “you will free my brother” is true,
-
2:38 - 2:40then the troll
has to release your brother. -
2:40 - 2:45And by its own rules, the troll
has to free the creatures as well, -
2:45 - 2:47since you said a true statement.
-
2:47 - 2:51By wielding just 5 words
like a logical scalpel, -
2:51 - 2:55you’ve forced the troll
to free all its prisoners. -
2:55 - 2:56As the troll stomps off in anger,
-
2:56 - 3:00the paradoxes cheer you
for winning them their freedom, -
3:00 - 3:03and promise to lead you to the
treasure at the top of the stairs. -
3:03 - 3:06If you can reach it.

You and your brother have discovered another realm and set off exploring the new wonderful world. Along the way, you see a troll catching creatures in an enormous net. The troll agrees to release the creatures if you can come up with a statement that is both truth and false. Can you come up with the correct sentence and force the troll to release them? Dan Finkel shows how.
