How the Monkey King escaped the underworld - Shunan Teng
-
0:09 - 0:12In the depths
of their underwater kingdom, -
0:12 - 0:15the mighty Dragon Lords
quaked with fear. -
0:18 - 0:23Before them pranced Sun Wukong,
the Monkey King. -
0:25 - 0:30The legendary troublemaker been hatched
from a stone, schooled in divine magic, -
0:30 - 0:36and was currently brandishing
the Dragon Lord’s most treasured weapon. -
0:36 - 0:37This magical staff,
-
0:37 - 0:41originally large enough to measure
the depth of a great flood, -
0:41 - 0:45now obeyed the Monkey King’s will
and shrank at his touch. -
0:45 - 0:48Terrified of this bewildering power,
-
0:48 - 0:53the Dragons graciously allowed
Sun Wukong to keep the staff. -
0:53 - 0:55The Monkey King stowed the weapon away,
-
0:55 - 0:58and gleefully sped back to his kingdom
to show this treasure -
0:58 - 1:01to his tribe of warrior monkeys.
-
1:01 - 1:06After a lavish celebration,
Sun Wukong fell into a deep sleep. -
1:06 - 1:08But just as he began to dream,
-
1:08 - 1:11the Monkey King
quickly realized two things. -
1:11 - 1:15The first was that
this was no ordinary slumber. -
1:15 - 1:19The second was that he wasn’t alone.
-
1:19 - 1:24Suddenly, he found himself caught
in the clutches of two grisly figures. -
1:24 - 1:27At first the Monkey King didn’t know
who his captors were. -
1:27 - 1:30But as they dragged him toward
their city’s gates, -
1:30 - 1:34Sun Wukong realized
his deathly predicament. -
1:34 - 1:38These were soul collectors
tasked with transporting mortals -
1:38 - 1:40to the Realm of the Dead.
-
1:40 - 1:42This was the domain of the Death Lords,
-
1:42 - 1:47who mercilessly sorted souls
and designed gruesome punishments. -
1:49 - 1:53From here, the kingdom of death
was laid out before him. -
1:53 - 1:56He could see the Death Lord’s palaces,
-
1:56 - 1:59and the fabled bridge
across the river Nai He. -
1:59 - 2:04Manning the bridge was an old woman
who offered worthy souls a bowl of soup. -
2:04 - 2:08After drinking, the spirits
forgot their previous life, -
2:08 - 2:11and were sent back to the world
of the living in a new form. -
2:11 - 2:15Further below were the souls
not worthy of reincarnation. -
2:15 - 2:17In this twisting maze of chambers,
-
2:17 - 2:21unfortunate spirits endured
endless rooms of punishment— -
2:21 - 2:27from mountains spiked with sharp blades,
to pools of blood and vats of boiling oil. -
2:27 - 2:33But Sun Wukong was not about to accept
torture or reincarnation. -
2:33 - 2:36As the soul collectors attempted to drag
him through the gates, -
2:36 - 2:41the Monkey King whipped out his staff
and swung himself out of their clutches. -
2:41 - 2:45His battle cries and the clang of weapons
echoed throughout the underworld. -
2:45 - 2:49Sensing a disturbance,
the ten Death Lords swooped upon him. -
2:49 - 2:52But they had never met such resistance
from a mortal soul. -
2:52 - 2:54What was this unusual creature?
-
2:54 - 2:58And was he a mortal, a god—
or something else? -
2:58 - 3:01The Lords consulted
the Book of Death and Life— -
3:01 - 3:05a tome which showed the time
of every living soul’s death. -
3:05 - 3:08Not knowing what category
this strange being was under, -
3:08 - 3:12the Death Lords struggled
to find Sun Wukong at first; -
3:12 - 3:15but the Monkey King
knew just where to look. -
3:15 - 3:19Unfortunately, the records confirmed
the Death Lord’s claim— -
3:19 - 3:24Sun Wukong was scheduled
to die this very night. -
3:24 - 3:26But the Monkey King was not afraid.
-
3:28 - 3:31This was far from the first time
he’d defied destiny -
3:31 - 3:33in his quest for wisdom and power.
-
3:33 - 3:37His past rebellions had earned him
the power to transfigure his body, -
3:37 - 3:43ride clouds at dizzying speeds, and govern
his tribe with magic and martial arts. -
3:43 - 3:47In this crisis,
he saw yet another opportunity. -
3:47 - 3:49With a flash of his nimble fingers,
-
3:49 - 3:52the Monkey King struck
his own name from the Book. -
3:52 - 3:54Before the Death Lords could respond,
-
3:54 - 3:58he found the names of his monkey tribe
and swept them away as well. -
4:01 - 4:04Liberated from the bonds of death,
-
4:04 - 4:08Sun Wukong began to battle
his way out of the underworld. -
4:08 - 4:11He deftly defeated endless swarms
of angry spirits— -
4:11 - 4:14before tripping on his way
out of the kingdom. -
4:14 - 4:20Just before he hit the ground,
Sun Wukong suddenly awoke in his bed. -
4:20 - 4:23At first he thought the journey
might have been a dream, -
4:23 - 4:26but the Monkey King felt
his new immortality surging -
4:26 - 4:30from the top of his head
to the tip of his tail. -
4:30 - 4:35With a cry of triumph, he woke his
warriors to share his latest adventure— -
4:35 - 4:38and commence another round
of celebration.
