  • 0:00 - 0:03
today's problem on the global scale
  • 0:04 - 0:09
is the coexistence between our occidental renunciation of religion
  • 0:09 - 0:13
and the societies which have yet to recognize such renunciation
  • 0:13 - 0:17
islam is posited as a particular problem because they're our neighbors
  • 0:17 - 0:22
they carry a particular familiarity with our culture
  • 0:23 - 0:29
all the while holding a trauma from the occidental presence
  • 0:29 - 0:32
which poses a menace to their collective identity
  • 0:32 - 0:35
which led to the resurgence of fundamentalism we see today
  • 0:38 - 0:45
we're talking about roughly one billion person who abandoned religion around the globe
  • 0:45 - 0:48
whilst there is another seven billion person whom
  • 0:48 - 0:52
in some sort, are coerced to live with our abandonment of religion
  • 0:52 - 0:54
by the means of cultural products which it has led to
  • 0:54 - 0:58
    science, techniques, economic reasoning
  • 0:59 - 1:03
while living in an essencially different culture
  • 1:04 - 1:08
we, to a great extent, can't understand their societies
  • 1:09 - 1:12
those which we named "third world"
  • 1:12 - 1:13
and refer to it today as the "south"
  • 1:14 - 1:16
    without understanding
  • 1:16 - 1:19
    the phenomenon of hierarchy
  • 1:21 - 1:24
    yes! they are hierarchal socities
  • 1:24 - 1:27
    similiar to our aristocratic societies
  • 1:27 - 1:30
during the 17th and 18th century
  • 1:30 - 1:33
    whereby the patronage system
  • 1:33 - 1:37
between the superior and his subordinates who depend on him
  • 1:37 - 1:38
    is still omnipresent
  • 1:38 - 1:42
westerns have a hard time understanding it
  • 1:43 - 1:44
    despite its necessity
  • 1:44 - 1:46
we also have to understand the rest of the world
  • 1:46 - 1:49
based on the history from which we departed
  • 1:50 - 1:51
    and it's no easy task
  • 1:52 - 1:55
because it leads to a future rife with conflicts
  • 1:56 - 1:59
are these societies that still haven't detached from religion
  • 1:59 - 2:02
    also undergoing an anthropological dynamic
  • 2:02 - 2:04
which will lead them to leave religion
  • 2:04 - 2:06
like us or are they going to remain stagnant
  • 2:07 - 2:11
i believe that it is has in fact embarked on such transition
  • 2:11 - 2:14
    amid very conflicitve conditions
  • 2:14 - 2:18
because such change is reaching them from the outside
  • 2:19 - 2:23
    this took us... some centuries
  • 2:24 - 2:27
and a history filled with conflicts
  • 2:27 - 2:29
    but we did it internally
  • 2:29 - 2:33
    relying on our own means
  • 2:34 - 2:38
whereas they've received the product of our own abandonment of religion
  • 2:38 - 2:40
    from the outside
  • 2:40 - 2:41
and they're obliged to adopt it
  • 2:42 - 2:51
some people could tell us:" you are who you are, and we are who we are"
  • 2:51 - 2:55
we're not interested in the manner of your thinking
  • 2:56 - 2:57
    and how you manage
  • 2:58 - 2:59
figure it out on your own
  • 2:59 - 3:04
no! occidental modernity is a proposition that can't be refused
  • 3:06 - 3:09
rather, such change is imposed externally
  • 3:09 - 3:16
leading to a collision with their profoundly inherent cultural and civilizational identitites
  • 3:16 - 3:20
in other words, it suggests another process of leaving religion
  • 3:20 - 3:21
    a very difficult one
  • 3:21 - 3:23
more difficult than the one we underwent
  • 3:23 - 3:26
some societies appear to have prevailed in doing so
  • 3:26 - 3:27
    until this very moment
  • 3:27 - 3:29
    take for example : japan
  • 3:29 - 3:30
    an extraordinary case
  • 3:31 - 3:33
    an ultra-modern society
  • 3:33 - 3:37
    economically and scientifically speaking
  • 3:37 - 3:40
at the same time, extremely traditional
  • 3:40 - 3:46
where apparently, buddhist and shinto religiosity remains alive
  • 3:48 - 3:50
so there has been a japanese miracle
  • 3:50 - 3:52
where it hasn't taken a dramatic turn
  • 3:53 - 3:58
unlike for many socities, particularly muslim ones, the process proves to be very dramatic
