    with demand and supply,

    but how markets link people
    and places all over the world.

    A key part of this whole story
    is going to be the role of prices.

    Something that you'll be hearing
    quite often is that a price,

    it's a signal wrapped up
    in an incentive.

    So we'll be talking about signals,
    about incentives,
  • Not Synced
    about speculation and prediction,
    and much else beside.

    We're going to begin
    with markets link in the world.

    We've already talked
    about the rose as a global product
  • Not Synced
    but it's not just roses of course.
  • Not Synced
    Take a look
    at the product around you.
  • Not Synced
    An iPhone designed in California
    has parts from the United States,
  • Not Synced
    from Kentucky, from Texas,
    from New York.
  • Not Synced
    The rare earths
    are from inner Mongolia.
  • Not Synced
    Some of the chips are produced
    in Korea and Taiwan.
  • Not Synced
    The gyroscope comes from France
    and from Italy.
  • Not Synced
    It's assembled in China.
    So where is the iPhone made?
  • Not Synced
    It's really made here in the world.
  • Not Synced
    It's a world phone like many
    of the products we consume today,
  • Not Synced
    it's produced by thousands,
    hundreds of thousands
  • Not Synced
    of people all brought together,
    all cooperating
  • Not Synced
    in order to produce a product.
  • Not Synced
    Now take a look at this picture.
  • Not Synced
    It shows something utterly familiar
    but I want you to see it
  • Not Synced
    deeper now with new eyes.
  • Not Synced
    We have here grapes from Chile,
    pineapples from Brazil,
  • Not Synced
    Kiwis from New Zealand,
    all of these within a hand's breath
  • Not Synced
    to one another.
  • Not Synced
    Think of all the farmers,
    all the truckers,
  • Not Synced
    all the airline pilots
    who have worked together
  • Not Synced
    to bring this literal
    cornucopia to you.
  • Not Synced
    And what do we call this place?
  • Not Synced
    Think of the name now
    with a new meaning.
  • Not Synced
    We call it a supermarket.
  • Not Synced
    When you read the news
    or see it on television,
  • Not Synced
    we're often told about conflict,
    but there's another story,
  • Not Synced
    a deeper story, a story
    which is all around us everyday,
  • Not Synced
    although sometimes it's hard to see
    and that is a massive,
  • Not Synced
    a tremendous amount
    of worldwide cooperation.
  • Not Synced
    Hundreds of thousands of people
    from Kido to Chicago cooperated
  • Not Synced
    to bring the rose
    to our handsome young man
  • Not Synced
    and they did so voluntarily,
    on the basis of self interest,
  • Not Synced
    without central command
    or central direction.
  • Not Synced
    This is invisible hand in action.
  • Not Synced
    Self interest coordinated
    towards the social good
  • Not Synced
    through the use of markets.
  • Not Synced
    Even in economics,
    we often focus on competition
  • Not Synced
    but the deeper story
    is cooperation,
  • Not Synced
    worldwide cooperation.
  • Not Synced
    What markets do is coordinate
    the self interest
  • Not Synced
    of many different people
  • Not Synced
    who ultimately
    have different goals,
  • Not Synced
    different preferences,
    different insights,
  • Not Synced
    different knowledge,
    different circumstances.
  • Not Synced
    What markets do, they coordinate
    the different interests
  • Not Synced
    and knowledge
    of these different people
  • Not Synced
    to produce extensive cooperation
    and mutual gain.
  • Not Synced
    That's one of the deep lessons
