Not Synced- [Alex] Today, we begin a series
of talks on the price system. -
Not SyncedNot one market in isolation
with demand and supply, -
Not Syncedbut how markets link people
and places all over the world. -
Not SyncedA key part of this whole story
is going to be the role of prices. -
Not SyncedSomething that you'll be hearing
quite often is that a price, -
Not Syncedit's a signal wrapped up
in an incentive. -
Not SyncedSo we'll be talking about signals,
about incentives, -
Not Syncedabout speculation and prediction,
and much else beside. -
Not SyncedWe're going to begin
with markets link in the world. -
Not SyncedWe've already talked
about the rose as a global product -
Not Syncedbut it's not just roses of course.
-
Not SyncedTake a look
at the product around you. -
Not SyncedAn iPhone designed in California
has parts from the United States, -
Not Syncedfrom Kentucky, from Texas,
from New York. -
Not SyncedThe rare earths
are from inner Mongolia. -
Not SyncedSome of the chips are produced
in Korea and Taiwan. -
Not SyncedThe gyroscope comes from France
and from Italy. -
Not SyncedIt's assembled in China.
So where is the iPhone made? -
Not SyncedIt's really made here in the world.
-
Not SyncedIt's a world phone like many
of the products we consume today, -
Not Syncedit's produced by thousands,
hundreds of thousands -
Not Syncedof people all brought together,
all cooperating -
Not Syncedin order to produce a product.
-
Not SyncedNow take a look at this picture.
-
Not SyncedIt shows something utterly familiar
but I want you to see it -
Not Synceddeeper now with new eyes.
-
Not SyncedWe have here grapes from Chile,
pineapples from Brazil, -
Not SyncedKiwis from New Zealand,
all of these within a hand's breath -
Not Syncedto one another.
-
Not SyncedThink of all the farmers,
all the truckers, -
Not Syncedall the airline pilots
who have worked together -
Not Syncedto bring this literal
cornucopia to you. -
Not SyncedAnd what do we call this place?
-
Not SyncedThink of the name now
with a new meaning. -
Not SyncedWe call it a supermarket.
-
Not SyncedWhen you read the news
or see it on television, -
Not Syncedwe're often told about conflict,
but there's another story, -
Not Synceda deeper story, a story
which is all around us everyday, -
Not Syncedalthough sometimes it's hard to see
and that is a massive, -
Not Synceda tremendous amount
of worldwide cooperation. -
Not SyncedHundreds of thousands of people
from Kido to Chicago cooperated -
Not Syncedto bring the rose
to our handsome young man -
Not Syncedand they did so voluntarily,
on the basis of self interest, -
Not Syncedwithout central command
or central direction. -
Not SyncedThis is invisible hand in action.
-
Not SyncedSelf interest coordinated
towards the social good -
Not Syncedthrough the use of markets.
-
Not SyncedEven in economics,
we often focus on competition -
Not Syncedbut the deeper story
is cooperation, -
Not Syncedworldwide cooperation.
-
Not SyncedWhat markets do is coordinate
the self interest -
Not Syncedof many different people
-
Not Syncedwho ultimately
have different goals, -
Not Synceddifferent preferences,
different insights, -
Not Synceddifferent knowledge,
different circumstances. -
Not SyncedWhat markets do, they coordinate
the different interests -
Not Syncedand knowledge
of these different people -
Not Syncedto produce extensive cooperation
and mutual gain. -
Not SyncedThat's one of the deep lessons
of economics. Thanks. -
