of talks on the price system. -
0:13 - 0:16Not one market in isolation
with demand and supply, -
0:16 - 0:20but how markets link people
and places all over the world. -
0:20 - 0:24A key part of this whole story
is going to be the role of prices. -
0:25 - 0:28Something that you'll be hearing
quite often is that a price, -
0:28 - 0:31it's a signal wrapped up
in an incentive. -
0:31 - 0:34So we'll be talking about signals,
about incentives, -
0:34 - 0:37about speculation and prediction,
and much else beside. -
0:42 - 0:45We're going to begin
with markets linking the world. -
0:45 - 0:47We've already talked
about the rose as a global product -
0:47 - 0:49but it's not just roses of course.

0:49 - 0:51Take a look
at the products around you. -
0:51 - 0:56An iPhone designed in California
has parts from the United States, -
0:56 - 0:58from Kentucky, from Texas,
from New York. -
0:58 - 1:01The rare earths
are from inner Mongolia. -
1:01 - 1:04Some of the chips are produced
in Korea and Taiwan. -
1:04 - 1:07The gyroscope comes from France
and from Italy. -
1:07 - 1:11It's assembled in China.
So where is the iPhone made? -
1:12 - 1:14It's really made here in the world.

1:14 - 1:18It's a world phone like many
of the products we consume today, -
1:18 - 1:21it's produced by thousands,
hundreds of thousands -
1:21 - 1:24of people all brought together,
all cooperating -
1:24 - 1:26in order to produce a product.

1:27 - 1:29Now take a look at this picture.

1:29 - 1:32It shows something utterly familiar
but I want you to see it -
1:32 - 1:35deeper now with new eyes.

1:35 - 1:38We have here grapes from Chile,
pineapples from Brazil, -
1:38 - 1:42Kiwis from New Zealand,
all of these within a hand's breath -
1:42 - 1:43of one another.

1:43 - 1:45Think of all the farmers,
all the truckers, -
1:45 - 1:48all the airline pilots
who have worked together -
1:48 - 1:51to bring this literal
cornucopia to you. -
1:51 - 1:53And what do we call this place?

1:53 - 1:55Think of the name now
with a new meaning. -
1:55 - 1:58We call it a supermarket.

1:58 - 2:01When we read the news
or see it on television, -
2:01 - 2:05we're often told about conflict,
but there's another story, -
2:05 - 2:09a deeper story, a story
which is all around us everyday, -
2:09 - 2:14although sometimes it's hard to see
and that is a massive, -
2:14 - 2:19a tremendous amount
of worldwide cooperation. -
2:20 - 2:25Hundreds of thousands of people
from Kido to Chicago cooperated -
2:25 - 2:28to bring the rose
to our handsome young man -
2:28 - 2:31and they did so voluntarily,
on the basis of self interest, -
2:31 - 2:34without central command
or central direction. -
2:35 - 2:38This is the invisible hand
in action. -
2:38 - 2:42Self interest coordinated
towards the social good -
2:42 - 2:44through the use of markets.
-
2:45 - 2:49Even in economics,
we often focus on competition -
2:49 - 2:52but the deeper story
is cooperation, -
2:52 - 2:55worldwide cooperation.
-
2:55 - 2:59What markets do is coordinate
the self interest -
2:59 - 3:01of many different people
-
3:01 - 3:03who ultimately
have different goals, -
3:03 - 3:05different preferences,
different insights, -
3:05 - 3:08different knowledge,
different circumstances. -
3:08 - 3:12What markets do, they coordinate
the different interests -
3:12 - 3:14and knowledge
of these different people -
3:14 - 3:18to produce extensive cooperation
and mutual gain. -
3:19 - 3:23That's one of the deep lessons
of economics. Thanks. -
