"Stumbling towards intimacy": An improvised TED Talk

  • Not Synced
[This is an improvised talk (and intro)
  • Not Synced
    based on a suggested topic
    from the audience.]
  • Not Synced
    [The speaker doesn't know
    the content of the slides.]
  • Not Synced
    Moderator: Our next speaker
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    is an incredibly experienced linguist
  • Not Synced
working at a lab at MIT
with a small group of researchers,
  • Not Synced
    and through studying our language
and the way that we communicate
  • Not Synced
    with other people,
  • Not Synced
    he has stumbled upon
    the secret of human intimacy.
  • Not Synced
Here to give us his perspective,
    please welcome to the stage,
  • Not Synced
    Anthony Veneziale.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    Anthony Veneziale: You might think
I know what you're going through.
  • Not Synced
You might be looking at me
    here on the red dot,
  • Not Synced
    or you might be looking
    at me on the screen.
  • Not Synced
There's a one sixth of a second delay.
  • Not Synced
Did I catch myself? I did.
  • Not Synced
I could see myself before I turned,
  • Not Synced
    and that small delay creates
a little bit of a divide.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
And a divide is exactly what happens
    with human language,
  • Not Synced
and the processing of that language.
  • Not Synced
    I of course am working
out of a small lab at MIT.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    And we are scraping
for every insight that we can get.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    This is not often associated
    with a computational challenge,
  • Not Synced
but in this case, we found
    that persistence of vision
  • Not Synced
    and auditory intake
  • Not Synced
    actually have more in common
    than we ever realized,
  • Not Synced
and we can see it in this first slide.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    Immediately your processing goes to,
    "Is that a hard-boiled egg?"
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    "Is that perhaps the structural
    integrity of the egg
  • Not Synced
    being able to sustain
the weight of what seems to be a rock?
  • Not Synced
Aha, is it in fact a real rock?"
  • Not Synced
We go to questions when we see
    visual information.
  • Not Synced
    But when we hear information,
    this is what happens.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    The floodgates in our mind
open much like the streets of Shanghai.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
So many pieces of information to process,
  • Not Synced
    so many ideas, concepts, feelings,
    and, of course, vulnerabilities
  • Not Synced
that we don't often wish to share.
  • Not Synced
    And so we hide,
  • Not Synced
and we hide behind what we like to call
    the floodgate of intimacy.
  • Not Synced
And what might that floodgate be holding?
  • Not Synced
What is the dike upon which it is built?
  • Not Synced
    Well, first off
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    we found that it's different
    for six different genotypes.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
And, of course, we can start
    categorizing these genotypes
  • Not Synced
    into a neuronormative experience
    and a neurodiverse experience.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
On the right-hand side of the screen,
  • Not Synced
    you're seeing spikes
    for the neurodiverse thinking.
  • Not Synced
    Now, there are generally only
    two emotional states
  • Not Synced
that a neurodiverse brain can tabulate
and keep count of at any given time,
  • Not Synced
    thereby eliminating the possibility
for them to be emotionally, sometimes,
  • Not Synced
    attuned to the present situation.
  • Not Synced
But on the lefthand side, you can see
    the neuronormative brain,
  • Not Synced
    which can often handle
    about five different pieces
  • Not Synced
    of emotional cognitive information
    at any given time.
  • Not Synced
    These are the slight variances
    that you are seeing
  • Not Synced
    in the 75, 90, and 60 percentile,
  • Not Synced
    and then of course
    that dramatic difference
  • Not Synced
    of the 25, 40, and 35 percentile.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
But of course, what is the neural network
  • Not Synced
that is helping to bridge and build
    these different discrepancies?
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    Fear.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter) (Applause)
  • Not Synced
And as we all know, fear
    resides in the amygdala,
  • Not Synced
and it is a very natural response,
  • Not Synced
and it is very closely linked
    with visual perception.
  • Not Synced
It is not as closely linked
    with verbal perception,
  • Not Synced
    so our fear receptors
    often will be going off
  • Not Synced
in advance of any of our cognitive usage
    around verbal and words
  • Not Synced
    and cues of language.
  • Not Synced
So as we see these fear moments,
  • Not Synced
we of course are taken aback.
  • Not Synced
We stumble in a certain direction,
  • Not Synced
    generally away from the intimacy.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
Now of course, there's a difference
    between the male perception
  • Not Synced
    and the female perception
  • Not Synced
and of trans and those who are in between,
    all of those as well,
  • Not Synced
and outside of the gender spectrum,
  • Not Synced
    but fear is the central
    underlying underpinning
  • Not Synced
of all of our response systems.
  • Not Synced
Fight-or-flight is one of the earliest,
  • Not Synced
    some say reptilian,
    response to our environment.
  • Not Synced
How can we disengage or unhook ourselves
from the horns of the amygdala?
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
Well, I'd like to tell you
    the secret right now.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    This is all making much,
    much too much sense.
  • Not Synced
    The secret lies
  • Not Synced
in turning our backs to one another,
  • Not Synced
and I know that that sounds
    absolutely like the opposite
  • Not Synced
    of what you were expecting,
  • Not Synced
    but when in your relationship
you turn your back to your partner
  • Not Synced
and place your back upon their back,
  • Not Synced
    you eliminate visual cues.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    You are more readily available
  • Not Synced
    to failing first,
  • Not Synced
    and failing first
  • Not Synced
far outweighs the lengths we go to
  • Not Synced
    to appeal to others,
  • Not Synced
to our partners, and to ourselves.
  • Not Synced
We spend billions and billions of dollars
  • Not Synced
    on clothing, on makeup,
  • Not Synced
on the latest trend of glasses,
  • Not Synced
    but what we don't spend
    money and time on
  • Not Synced
    is connecting with each other
  • Not Synced
in a way that is truthful
  • Not Synced
    and honest
  • Not Synced
and stripped of those visual receptors.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    It sounds hard, doesn't it.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
But we want to be aggressive about this.
  • Not Synced
We don't want to just sit on the couch.
  • Not Synced
As a historian said earlier today,
  • Not Synced
    it's important to get up
    and circumvent sometimes that couch.
  • Not Synced
And how can we do it?
  • Not Synced
Well yes, ice is a big part of it.
  • Not Synced
    Insights, compassion, and empathy:
  • Not Synced
    I, C, E.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
And when we start using this ice method,
  • Not Synced
    well, the possibilities become
    much bigger than us.
  • Not Synced
In fact, they become smaller than you.
  • Not Synced
    On a molecular level,
  • Not Synced
    I believe that that insight
  • Not Synced
    is the unifying theme
  • Not Synced
for every talk you have seen so far at TED
  • Not Synced
and will continue as we of course embark
  • Not Synced
on this journey here on this tiny planet,
  • Not Synced
on the ledge, on the precipice,
  • Not Synced
    as we are seeing, yes,
    death is inevitable.
  • Not Synced
Will it meet all of us at the same time
  • Not Synced
I think is the variable we are inquiring.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
I think that timeline gets a bit longer
  • Not Synced
    when we use ice
  • Not Synced
and when we rest our backs
    upon one another
  • Not Synced
    and build together,
  • Not Synced
    leaving behind the fear
  • Not Synced
    and working towards
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    -- they'll edit this part out --
  • Not Synced
    a ripened experience of love,
  • Not Synced
    compassion,
  • Not Synced
    intimacy based on a truth
  • Not Synced
that you are sharing from your mind's eye
  • Not Synced
and the heart that we all can touch,
  • Not Synced
    tactilely feel,
  • Not Synced
have maybe potentially a mushy experience
  • Not Synced
that we don't just throw out
    because it is browned,
  • Not Synced
but let us slice in half
    the experience we have gathered,
  • Not Synced
let us seed what the heart, the core,
  • Not Synced
the seed of that idea in each of us is,
  • Not Synced
and let us share it back to back.
  • Not Synced
    Thank you very much.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
