Getting started as a DJ: Mixing, mashups and digital turntables - Cole Plante
-
0:07 - 0:32(Music)
-
0:32 - 0:36Aw, thank you, thank you.
-
0:36 - 0:37As you can probably tell,
-
0:37 - 0:39I'm an astronaut.
-
0:39 - 0:43No, I'm a DJ/Producer, as it says on the screen.
-
0:43 - 0:45I am also a high school student,
-
0:45 - 0:46just like many of you guys.
-
0:46 - 0:47How many high school students do we have out here?
-
0:47 - 0:49(Cheers)
-
0:49 - 0:50Oh, okay! A good amount.
-
0:50 - 0:52I'm a proud member of my school's marching band,
-
0:52 - 0:53and I run track, as well,
-
0:53 - 0:55so if any of you guys are into that,
-
0:55 - 0:57it's one of my other passions.
-
0:57 - 0:59I have been DJing and producing
-
0:59 - 1:01for a little over three years now,
-
1:01 - 1:02and I've worked with artists that you may know,
-
1:02 - 1:05like Avicii, Skrillex, Major Lazer,
-
1:05 - 1:09Krewella, Porter Robinsion, Carnage, and many others.
-
1:09 - 1:12How many of you guys like dance music?
-
1:12 - 1:14Show off hands, dance music, oh okay.
-
1:14 - 1:17How many of you guys like rap or trap hip hop?
-
1:17 - 1:19Okay, good amount.
-
1:19 - 1:21Jazz? Classical?
-
1:21 - 1:23That's good, you guys have smart minds, that's good.
-
1:23 - 1:25What's great about DJing
-
1:25 - 1:27is that you can combine all these genres into one idea,
-
1:27 - 1:29and what I like to do is combine
-
1:29 - 1:34dance, hip hop, trap, dubstep, even movie samples,
-
1:34 - 1:36and kind of combine them into one set.
-
1:36 - 1:38DJing creates this, sort of, combined culture
-
1:38 - 1:40that really unites many fans.
-
1:40 - 1:42A good example of this
-
1:42 - 1:44is Skrillex and A$AP Rocky's collaboration
-
1:44 - 1:45"Wild for the Night"
-
1:45 - 1:49or, most recently, Avicii and Ella Black's "Wake Me Up."
-
1:49 - 1:51How many of you guys know that song?
-
1:51 - 1:52It's a great track.
-
1:52 - 1:55Now, what exactly does a DJ do?
-
1:55 - 1:57Well, as you just saw earlier,
-
1:57 - 1:59they mix tracks.
-
1:59 - 2:01What I just did
-
2:01 - 2:03was mix a Kanye West intro from "Black Skinheads"
-
2:03 - 2:04with a track called "LRAD."
-
2:04 - 2:06One of the main goals is to really
-
2:06 - 2:08trigger samples, tracks, or clips
-
2:08 - 2:10and kind of create this long journey.
-
2:10 - 2:12I'm going to do another little example for you guys right now
-
2:12 - 2:14of what DJs call a "mashup,"
-
2:14 - 2:15which is taking two or more tracks
-
2:15 - 2:17and combining them into one.
-
2:17 - 2:19This mashup was made famous
-
2:19 - 2:21by a Hungarian duo Myon & Shane 54,
-
2:21 - 2:24and it takes the vocals from Gorillaz's "Alive."
-
2:24 - 2:27How many of you guys know that song? "Alive"?
-
2:27 - 2:28Yeah, okay.
-
2:28 - 2:30I'm going to take the vocals from that track
-
2:30 - 2:32and the song "Language" by Porter Robinsion.
-
2:32 - 2:36So, let me just play you the vocals first.
-
2:36 - 2:44(Music)
-
2:44 - 2:45So, that's the vocals,
-
2:45 - 2:47and here's the actual track.
-
2:47 - 2:50(Music)
-
2:50 - 2:52So, what I'm going to do is I'm going to fill these vocals
-
2:52 - 2:53on top of the track
-
2:53 - 2:55and create a new song, a kind of combined song,
-
2:55 - 2:57with the two vocals.
-
2:57 - 3:10(Music)
-
3:10 - 3:11If you turn it down,
-
3:11 - 3:14you can just hear I'm playing it a capella
-
3:14 - 3:16or just the song by itself.
-
3:16 - 3:27(Music)
-
3:27 - 3:29Now, what I'm going to do after this drops
-
3:29 - 3:30is change it into another song.
-
3:30 - 3:32One of the most important things about dance music
-
3:32 - 3:34is really the drop,
-
3:34 - 3:36so I'm going to change it into another song
-
3:36 - 3:38and really catch you by surprise.
-
3:38 - 4:05(Music)
-
4:05 - 4:07And that's one example right there.
-
4:07 - 4:10(Applause)
-
4:10 - 4:14So, as you saw, I took three different songs
-
4:14 - 4:16and kind of combined them into one new idea,
-
4:16 - 4:19which is something plenty of DJs do out there
-
4:19 - 4:20on the professional circuit.
-
4:20 - 4:22There are plenty of ways to get started DJing.
-
4:22 - 4:24One of the main things I did
-
4:24 - 4:26was really take the time to study DJs that inspired me.
-
4:26 - 4:28Whether it was watching podcasts,
-
4:28 - 4:30watching live sets,
-
4:30 - 4:32or just really looking them up online,
-
4:32 - 4:34I really tried to take in what it meant
-
4:34 - 4:35to be a fantastic DJ.
-
4:35 - 4:37One of the best ways to really learn
-
4:37 - 4:40is to ask a friend, you know, a friend who knows how to DJ.
-
4:40 - 4:42Just go over there, ask him a few questions.
-
4:42 - 4:46If no that, thankfully we have a lot of great online resources.
-
4:46 - 4:48One of the things you can do is check out YouTube,
-
4:48 - 4:51check out some demonstrations.
-
4:51 - 4:53Now, many DJs, a high percentage of them,
-
4:53 - 4:57check out Beatport or Soundcloud to find a lot of the tracks.
-
4:57 - 4:59There are also many other blogsites,
-
4:59 - 5:03such as Billboard's CODE, EDMTunes, EDM Sauce,
-
5:03 - 5:04or Dancing Astronaut.
-
5:04 - 5:06Now, there are multiple ways to DJ,
-
5:06 - 5:10and what could originally only be done on turntables and vinyl,
-
5:10 - 5:11by legends
-
5:11 - 5:14such as Larry Levan, Grandmaster Flash, and Paul Oakenfold,
-
5:14 - 5:18can now be done with many more pieces of equipment,
-
5:18 - 5:19such as CDJs,
-
5:19 - 5:21which are, sort of, digital turntables
-
5:21 - 5:24and what I learned on and what I still use to this day.
-
5:24 - 5:27There are many other amazing programs now,
-
5:27 - 5:29such as Ableton, Traktor Pro,
-
5:29 - 5:33Serato, or even apps for tablets and touchscreens.
-
5:33 - 5:36There are many hardware systems
-
5:36 - 5:38just like my APC40 here
-
5:38 - 5:41that can launch samples, clips, tracks.
-
5:41 - 5:44You can also just use turntables, CDJs,
-
5:44 - 5:45an S4 controller, or an Novation Launchpad.
-
5:45 - 5:50And all of these really kind of do the same thing,
-
5:50 - 5:52and that's mix tracks.
-
5:52 - 5:53So, what I'm going to do now
-
5:53 - 5:57is show you guys another mix demonstration.
-
5:57 - 5:59I'm going to start with one of my own songs
-
5:59 - 6:00that I did with my friend Matt Dzyacky,
-
6:00 - 6:02and from there I'm going to go
-
6:02 - 6:03in a sort of medley of different tracks
-
6:03 - 6:10and show you the different styles of mixing that you can do.
-
6:10 - 6:18(Music)
-
6:18 - 6:21So I'll show you guys when I start mixing the new track,
-
6:21 - 6:23so you can hear it coming in.
-
6:23 - 6:32(Music)
-
6:32 - 6:34You can hear in the back, a new song is mixing in.
-
6:34 - 6:43(Music)
-
6:43 - 6:46Now, another thing that DJs use is what's called a mixer,
-
6:46 - 6:48and a mixer has many different effects,
-
6:48 - 6:54such as a beat roll,
-
6:54 - 6:57filter effects,
-
6:57 - 6:58and any other different ones.
-
6:58 - 7:00There's plenty of effects to use.
-
7:00 - 7:16(Music)
-
7:16 - 7:17So, now I'm going into a new song,
-
7:17 - 7:19and after this drops,
-
7:19 - 7:20I'm going to drop it in another song
-
7:20 - 7:21and kind of change it up.
-
7:21 - 7:43(Music)
-
7:43 - 7:45And that's a new song bite.
-
7:45 - 8:01(Music)
-
8:01 - 8:03So I'm just going to straight mash up
-
8:03 - 8:05another song right when this one breaks down.
-
8:05 - 8:14(Music)
-
8:14 - 8:16Now, if I want to change up the music,
-
8:16 - 8:17let's say, throw in some new beats,
-
8:17 - 8:20I can just choose a trap beat I want to throw over the breakdown.
-
8:20 - 8:29(Music)
-
8:29 - 8:33So, I get ready to throw in my new beats now.
-
8:33 - 9:43(Music)
-
9:43 - 9:45And that is the end of that demo.
-
9:45 - 9:50(Applause)
-
9:50 - 9:52Thank you, thank you!
-
9:52 - 9:54Now, the great thing about technologies now
-
9:54 - 9:56is whether it's a two dollar app
-
9:56 - 9:58or a couple hundred dollar equipment,
-
9:58 - 10:00which I'm sure most parents
-
10:00 - 10:01won't want to buy for their child,
-
10:01 - 10:04is that almost anyone who has a passion for DJing
-
10:04 - 10:05and a passion for the music
-
10:05 - 10:07and who might want to pursue a career in it
-
10:07 - 10:10really has the ability to, well, pursue it,
-
10:10 - 10:12such as myself.
-
10:12 - 10:14You can start with an app on a tablet
-
10:14 - 10:15or an app on your phone, even, an app on your iPad,
-
10:15 - 10:18and then move on to bigger equipment.
-
10:18 - 10:20The opportunities are endless,
-
10:20 - 10:21and, as you saw, you can mix
-
10:21 - 10:23many different styles of music.
-
10:23 - 10:25So, thank you!
