Getting started as a DJ: Mixing, mashups and digital turntables - Cole Plante

  • 0:07 - 0:32
    (Music)
  • 0:32 - 0:36
    Aw, thank you, thank you.
  • 0:36 - 0:37
    As you can probably tell,
  • 0:37 - 0:39
    I'm an astronaut.
  • 0:39 - 0:43
No, I'm a DJ/Producer, as it says on the screen.
  • 0:43 - 0:45
I am also a high school student,
  • 0:45 - 0:46
just like many of you guys.
  • 0:46 - 0:47
How many high school students do we have out here?
  • 0:47 - 0:49
    (Cheers)
  • 0:49 - 0:50
    Oh, okay! A good amount.
  • 0:50 - 0:52
I'm a proud member of my school's marching band,
  • 0:52 - 0:53
and I run track, as well,
  • 0:53 - 0:55
so if any of you guys are into that,
  • 0:55 - 0:57
it's one of my other passions.
  • 0:57 - 0:59
I have been DJing and producing
  • 0:59 - 1:01
for a little over three years now,
  • 1:01 - 1:02
and I've worked with artists that you may know,
  • 1:02 - 1:05
    like Avicii, Skrillex, Major Lazer,
  • 1:05 - 1:09
Krewella, Porter Robinsion, Carnage, and many others.
  • 1:09 - 1:12
How many of you guys like dance music?
  • 1:12 - 1:14
Show off hands, dance music, oh okay.
  • 1:14 - 1:17
How many of you guys like rap or trap hip hop?
  • 1:17 - 1:19
    Okay, good amount.
  • 1:19 - 1:21
    Jazz? Classical?
  • 1:21 - 1:23
That's good, you guys have smart minds, that's good.
  • 1:23 - 1:25
    What's great about DJing
  • 1:25 - 1:27
is that you can combine all these genres into one idea,
  • 1:27 - 1:29
and what I like to do is combine
  • 1:29 - 1:34
dance, hip hop, trap, dubstep, even movie samples,
  • 1:34 - 1:36
and kind of combine them into one set.
  • 1:36 - 1:38
DJing creates this, sort of, combined culture
  • 1:38 - 1:40
    that really unites many fans.
  • 1:40 - 1:42
    A good example of this
  • 1:42 - 1:44
is Skrillex and A$AP Rocky's collaboration
  • 1:44 - 1:45
    "Wild for the Night"
  • 1:45 - 1:49
or, most recently, Avicii and Ella Black's "Wake Me Up."
  • 1:49 - 1:51
How many of you guys know that song?
  • 1:51 - 1:52
    It's a great track.
  • 1:52 - 1:55
Now, what exactly does a DJ do?
  • 1:55 - 1:57
Well, as you just saw earlier,
  • 1:57 - 1:59
    they mix tracks.
  • 1:59 - 2:00
    What I just did
  • 2:00 - 2:03
was mix a Kanye West intro from "Black Skinheads"
  • 2:03 - 2:04
    with a track called "LRAD."
  • 2:04 - 2:06
One of the main goals is to really
  • 2:06 - 2:08
    trigger samples, tracks, or clips
  • 2:08 - 2:10
and kind of create this long journey.
  • 2:10 - 2:12
I'm going to do another little example for you guys right now
  • 2:12 - 2:14
of what DJs call a "mashup,"
  • 2:14 - 2:15
which is taking two or more tracks
  • 2:15 - 2:17
    and combining them into one.
  • 2:17 - 2:19
    This mashup was made famous
  • 2:19 - 2:21
by a Hungarian duo Myon & Shane 54,
  • 2:21 - 2:24
and it takes the vocals from Krewella's "Alive."
  • 2:24 - 2:27
How many of you guys know that song? "Alive"?
  • 2:27 - 2:28
    Yeah, okay.
  • 2:28 - 2:30
I'm going to take the vocals from that track
  • 2:30 - 2:32
and the song "Language" by Porter Robinson.
  • 2:32 - 2:36
So, let me just play you the vocals first.
  • 2:36 - 2:44
    (Music)
  • 2:44 - 2:45
    So, that's the vocals,
  • 2:45 - 2:47
    and here's the actual track.
  • 2:47 - 2:50
    (Music)
  • 2:50 - 2:52
So, what I'm going to do is I'm going to fill these vocals
  • 2:52 - 2:53
    on top of the track
  • 2:53 - 2:55
and create a new song, a kind of combined song,
  • 2:55 - 2:57
    with the two vocals.
  • 2:57 - 3:10
    (Music)
  • 3:10 - 3:11
    If you turn it down,
  • 3:11 - 3:14
you can just hear I'm playing it a capella
  • 3:14 - 3:16
or just the song by itself.
  • 3:16 - 3:27
    (Music)
  • 3:27 - 3:29
Now, what I'm going to do after this drops
  • 3:29 - 3:30
is change it into another song.
  • 3:30 - 3:32
One of the most important things about dance music
  • 3:32 - 3:34
    is really the drop,
  • 3:34 - 3:36
so I'm going to change it into another song
  • 3:36 - 3:38
and really catch you by surprise.
  • 3:38 - 4:05
    (Music)
  • 4:05 - 4:07
And that's one example right there.
  • 4:07 - 4:10
    (Applause)
  • 4:10 - 4:14
So, as you saw, I took three different songs
  • 4:14 - 4:16
and kind of combined them into one new idea,
  • 4:16 - 4:19
which is something plenty of DJs do out there
  • 4:19 - 4:20
    on the professional circuit.
  • 4:20 - 4:22
There are plenty of ways to get started DJing.
  • 4:22 - 4:24
One of the main things I did
  • 4:24 - 4:26
was really take the time to study DJs that inspired me.
  • 4:26 - 4:28
    Whether it was watching podcasts,
  • 4:28 - 4:30
    watching live sets,
  • 4:30 - 4:32
or just really looking them up online.
  • 4:32 - 4:34
I really tried to take in what it meant
  • 4:34 - 4:35
    to be a fantastic DJ.
  • 4:35 - 4:37
One of the best ways to really learn
  • 4:37 - 4:40
is to ask a friend, you know, a friend who knows how to DJ.
  • 4:40 - 4:42
Just go over there, ask him a few questions.
  • 4:42 - 4:46
If no that, thankfully we have a lot of great online resources.
  • 4:46 - 4:48
One of the things you can do is check out YouTube,
  • 4:48 - 4:51
    check out some demonstrations.
  • 4:51 - 4:53
Now, many DJs, a high percentage of them,
  • 4:53 - 4:57
check out Beatport or Soundcloud to find a lot of the tracks.
  • 4:57 - 4:59
There are also many other blog sites,
  • 4:59 - 5:03
such as Billboard's CODE, EDMTunes, EDM Sauce,
  • 5:03 - 5:04
    or Dancing Astronaut.
  • 5:04 - 5:06
Now, there are multiple ways to DJ,
  • 5:06 - 5:10
and what could originally only be done on turntables and vinyl,
  • 5:10 - 5:11
    by legends
  • 5:11 - 5:14
such as Larry Levan, Grandmaster Flash, and Paul Oakenfold,
  • 5:14 - 5:18
can now be done with many more pieces of equipment,
  • 5:18 - 5:19
    such as CDJs,
  • 5:19 - 5:21
which are, sort of, digital turntables
  • 5:21 - 5:24
and what I learned on and what I still use to this day.
  • 5:24 - 5:27
There are many other amazing programs now,
  • 5:27 - 5:29
    such as Ableton, Traktor Pro,
  • 5:29 - 5:33
Serato, or even apps for tablets and touchscreens.
  • 5:33 - 5:36
    There are many hardware systems
  • 5:36 - 5:38
    just like my APC40 here
  • 5:38 - 5:41
that can launch samples, clips and tracks.
  • 5:41 - 5:44
You can also just use turntables, CDJs,
  • 5:44 - 5:46
an S4 controller, or an Novation Launchpad.
  • 5:46 - 5:50
And all of these really kind of do the same thing,
  • 5:50 - 5:52
    and that's mix tracks.
  • 5:52 - 5:53
So, what I'm going to do now
  • 5:53 - 5:57
is show you guys another mix demonstration.
  • 5:57 - 5:59
I'm going to start with one of my own songs
  • 5:59 - 6:00
that I did with my friend Matt Dzyacky,
  • 6:00 - 6:02
and from there I'm going to go
  • 6:02 - 6:03
in a sort of medley of different tracks
  • 6:03 - 6:10
and show you the different styles of mixing that you can do.
  • 6:10 - 6:18
    (Music)
  • 6:18 - 6:21
So I'll show you guys when I start mixing the new track,
  • 6:21 - 6:23
so you can hear it coming in.
  • 6:23 - 6:32
    (Music)
  • 6:32 - 6:34
You can hear in the back, a new song is mixing in.
  • 6:34 - 6:43
    (Music)
  • 6:43 - 6:46
Now, another thing that DJs use is what's called a mixer,
  • 6:46 - 6:48
and a mixer has many different effects,
  • 6:48 - 6:54
    such as a beat roll,
  • 6:54 - 6:57
    filter effects,
  • 6:57 - 6:58
    and any other different ones.
  • 6:58 - 7:00
There's plenty of effects to use.
  • 7:00 - 7:16
    (Music)
  • 7:16 - 7:17
So, now I'm going into a new song,
  • 7:17 - 7:19
    and after this drops,
  • 7:19 - 7:20
I'm going to drop it in another song
  • 7:20 - 7:21
and kind of change it up.
  • 7:21 - 7:43
    (Music)
  • 7:43 - 7:45
And that's a new song bite.
  • 7:45 - 8:01
    (Music)
  • 8:01 - 8:03
So I'm just going to straight mash up
  • 8:03 - 8:05
another song right when this one breaks down.
  • 8:05 - 8:13
    (Music)
  • 8:13 - 8:15
Now, if I want to change up the music,
  • 8:15 - 8:17
let's say, throw in some new beats,
  • 8:17 - 8:20
I can just choose a trap beat I want to throw over the breakdown.
  • 8:20 - 8:29
    (Music)
  • 8:29 - 8:33
So, I get ready to throw in my new beats now.
  • 8:33 - 9:43
    (Music)
  • 9:43 - 9:45
And that is the end of that demo.
  • 9:45 - 9:50
    (Applause)
  • 9:50 - 9:52
    Thank you, thank you!
  • 9:52 - 9:54
Now, the great thing about technologies now
  • 9:54 - 9:56
is whether it's a two dollar app
  • 9:56 - 9:58
or a couple hundred dollar equipment,
  • 9:58 - 10:00
    which I'm sure most parents
  • 10:00 - 10:01
won't want to buy for their child,
  • 10:01 - 10:04
is that almost anyone who has a passion for DJing
  • 10:04 - 10:05
and a passion for the music
  • 10:05 - 10:07
and who might want to pursue a career in it
  • 10:07 - 10:10
really has the ability to, well, pursue it,
  • 10:10 - 10:12
    such as myself.
  • 10:12 - 10:14
You can start with an app on a tablet
  • 10:14 - 10:15
or an app on your phone, even, an app on your iPad,
  • 10:15 - 10:18
and then move on to bigger equipment.
  • 10:18 - 10:20
    The opportunities are endless,
  • 10:20 - 10:21
and, as you saw, you can mix
  • 10:21 - 10:23
    many different styles of music.
  • 10:23 - 10:25
    So, thank you!
