Getting started as a DJ: Mixing, mashups and digital turntables - Cole Plante

  • Not Synced
    (Music)
  • Not Synced
    Aw, thank you.
  • Not Synced
    As you can probably tell,
  • Not Synced
    I'm an astronaut.
  • Not Synced
No, I'm a DJ/Producer, as it says on the screen.
  • Not Synced
I am also a high school student,
  • Not Synced
just like many of you guys.
  • Not Synced
How many high school students do we have here?
  • Not Synced
    (Cheers)
  • Not Synced
    Oh, okay! A good amount.
  • Not Synced
I'm a proud member of my school's marching band,
  • Not Synced
and I run track, as well,
  • Not Synced
so if any of you guys are into that,
  • Not Synced
it's one of my other passions.
  • Not Synced
I have been DJing and producing
  • Not Synced
for a little over three years now,
  • Not Synced
and I've worked with artists you may know,
  • Not Synced
    like Avicii, Skrillex, Major Lazer,
  • Not Synced
Cruella, Porter Robinsion, Carnage, and many others.
  • Not Synced
How many of you guys like dance music?
  • Not Synced
    Show off hands, oh okay.
  • Not Synced
How many of you guys like rap or hip hop?
  • Not Synced
    Okay, good amount.
  • Not Synced
    Jazz? Classical?
  • Not Synced
That's good, you guys have smart minds, that's good.
  • Not Synced
    What's great about DJing
  • Not Synced
is that you can combine all these genres into one idea,
  • Not Synced
and what I like to do is combine
  • Not Synced
dance, hip hop, trap, dubstep, even movie samples,
  • Not Synced
and kind of combine them into one set.
  • Not Synced
DJing creates this, sort of, combined culture
  • Not Synced
    that really unites many fans.
  • Not Synced
    A good example of this
  • Not Synced
is Skrillex and Aeseop Rocky's collaboration
  • Not Synced
    "Wild for the Night"
  • Not Synced
or, most recently, Avicii and Ella Black's "Wake Me Up."
  • Not Synced
How many of you guys know that song?
  • Not Synced
    It's a great track.
  • Not Synced
Now, what exactly does a DJ do?
  • Not Synced
Well, as you just saw earlier,
  • Not Synced
    they mix tracks.
  • Not Synced
    What I did just did
  • Not Synced
was mix a Kanye West intro from "Black Skinheads"
  • Not Synced
with a track called "El Rad."
  • Not Synced
One of the main goals is to really
  • Not Synced
    trigger samples, tracks, or clips
  • Not Synced
and kind of create this long journey.
  • Not Synced
I'm going to do another little example for you guys right now
  • Not Synced
    of what DJ's call "a mash-up,"
  • Not Synced
which is taking two or more tracks
  • Not Synced
    and combining them into one.
  • Not Synced
    This mashup was made famous
  • Not Synced
by a Hungarian duo Mine and Shane 54,
  • Not Synced
and it takes the vocals from Gorillaz's "Alive" --
  • Not Synced
how many of you guys know that song? --
  • Not Synced
    Yeah okay.
  • Not Synced
I'm going to take the vocals from that track
  • Not Synced
and the song "Language" by Porter Robinsion.
  • Not Synced
Let me just play you the vocals first.
  • Not Synced
    (Music)
  • Not Synced
    So, that's the vocals.
  • Not Synced
    And here's the actual track.
  • Not Synced
    (Music)
  • Not Synced
So, what I'm going to do is fill the vocals
  • Not Synced
    on top of the track
  • Not Synced
and create a new song, a combined song,
  • Not Synced
    with the new vocals.
  • Not Synced
    (Music)
  • Not Synced
    If you turn it down,
  • Not Synced
you can hear I'm just playing it acapella
  • Not Synced
or just the song by itself.
  • Not Synced
    (Music)
  • Not Synced
Now, what I'm going to do after this drops
  • Not Synced
is change it into another song.
  • Not Synced
One of the most important things about dance music
  • Not Synced
    is really the drop,
  • Not Synced
so I'm going to change it into another song
  • Not Synced
and really catch you by surprise.
  • Not Synced
    (Music)
  • Not Synced
And that's one example right there.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
So, as you saw, I took three different songs
  • Not Synced
and kind of combined them into one new idea,
  • Not Synced
which is something plenty of DJs do out there
  • Not Synced
    on the professional circuit.
  • Not Synced
There are plenty of ways to get started DJing.
  • Not Synced
One of the main things I did
  • Not Synced
was really take the time to study DJs that inspired me.
  • Not Synced
    Whether it was watching podcasts,
  • Not Synced
    watching live sets,
  • Not Synced
or just really looking them up online,
  • Not Synced
I really tried to take in what it meant
  • Not Synced
    to be a fantastic DJ.
  • Not Synced
One of the best ways to really learn
  • Not Synced
is to ask a friend, you know, a friend who knows how to DJ.
  • Not Synced
Just go over there, ask him a few questions.
  • Not Synced
If not, thankfully we have a lot of online resources.
  • Not Synced
One of the things you can do is check out YouTube,
  • Not Synced
    check out some demonstrations.
  • Not Synced
Now, many DJs, a high percentage of them,
  • Not Synced
check out Beatport or Soundcloud to find a lot of the tracks,
  • Not Synced
There are also many other blogsites,
  • Not Synced
such as Billboard's Code, EDM Tunes, EDMsuace,
  • Not Synced
    or Dancing Astronauts.
  • Not Synced
Now, there are multiple ways to DJ,
  • Not Synced
and what could originally only be done on turntables
  • Not Synced
    and vinyl, by legends
  • Not Synced
like Larry Levan, Grandmaster Flash, and Paul Oakenfold,
  • Not Synced
can now be done with many more pieces of equipment,
  • Not Synced
    such as CDJs,
  • Not Synced
    which are digital turntables.
  • Not Synced
And what I learned on and what I still use to this day.
  • Not Synced
There are many other amazing programs,
  • Not Synced
    like Ableton, Traktor Pro,
  • Not Synced
Serato, or even apps for tablets and touchscreens.
  • Not Synced
    There are many hardware systems
  • Not Synced
    just like my APC40 here
  • Not Synced
that can launch samples, clips, tracks.
  • Not Synced
You can also just use turntables, CDJs,
  • Not Synced
and As4 controllers, or innovation launchpad.
  • Not Synced
And all of these really do the same thing,
  • Not Synced
    and that's mix tracks.
  • Not Synced
So what I'm going to do now
  • Not Synced
is show you guys another mix demonstration.
  • Not Synced
I'm going to start with one of my own songs
  • Not Synced
that I did with Matt Azacki,
  • Not Synced
and from there I'm going to go
  • Not Synced
in sort of a medley of tracks
  • Not Synced
and show you the different styles of mixing you can do.
  • Not Synced
    (Music)
  • Not Synced
So I'll show you guys when I start mixing the new track,
  • Not Synced
so you can hear it coming in.
  • Not Synced
    (Music)
  • Not Synced
You can hear in the back, a new song is mixing in.
  • Not Synced
    (Music)
  • Not Synced
Now, another thing that DJs use is a mixer,
  • Not Synced
and a mixer has many different effects,
  • Not Synced
    such as a beat roll,
  • Not Synced
    filter effects,
  • Not Synced
    and any other different ones.
  • Not Synced
THere are plenty of effects to use.
  • Not Synced
    (Music)
  • Not Synced
So, now I'm going into a new song,
  • Not Synced
    and after this drops,
  • Not Synced
I'm going to drop it in another song
  • Not Synced
and kind of change it up.
  • Not Synced
    (Music)
  • Not Synced
And that's a new song bite.
  • Not Synced
    (Music)
  • Not Synced
So I'm just going to straight mash up
  • Not Synced
another song right when this one breaks down.
  • Not Synced
    (Music)
  • Not Synced
Now, if I want to change up the music,
  • Not Synced
say, throw in some new beats,
  • Not Synced
I'll just choose a beat I want to throw over the breakdown.
  • Not Synced
    (Music)
  • Not Synced
So I get ready to throw in my new beats now.
  • Not Synced
    (Music)
  • Not Synced
And that is the end of that demo.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    Thank you, thank you!
  • Not Synced
The great thing about technologies now
  • Not Synced
is whether it's a two dollar app
  • Not Synced
or a couple hundred dollar equipment,
  • Not Synced
    which I'm sure most parents
  • Not Synced
won't want to buy for their child,
  • Not Synced
is that almost anyone who has a passion for DJing
  • Not Synced
and a passion for the music
  • Not Synced
and who might want to pursue a career in it
  • Not Synced
really has the ability to, well, pursue it,
  • Not Synced
    such as myself.
  • Not Synced
You can start with an app on a tablet
  • Not Synced
or a on your phone, even, on your iPad.
  • Not Synced
and then move on to bigger equipment.
  • Not Synced
    The opportunities are endless,
  • Not Synced
and, as you saw, you can mix
  • Not Synced
    many different styles of music.
  • Not Synced
    So, thank you!
