Sexual predators edited my photos into porn - how I fought back | Noelle Martin | TEDxPerth
-
0:06 - 0:09[This talk contains graphic language
and descriptions of sexual abuse] -
0:10 - 0:12Let me begin with a question.
-
0:12 - 0:17Can I get a show of hands
who here has ever Googled themselves? -
0:19 - 0:21I have.
-
0:21 - 0:25But what started off
as momentary curiosity -
0:26 - 0:32very quickly turned
into an almost five-year horrific battle -
0:33 - 0:35that almost ruined my life.
-
0:35 - 0:37Now, before I continue, I must point out
-
0:37 - 0:43that what I'm about to talk about
is very confronting and graphic. -
0:43 - 0:45But there's no way out.
-
0:45 - 0:47This is a very confronting issue.
-
0:48 - 0:51This is me at 17 years old.
-
0:51 - 0:54An innocent selfie I took before a party.
-
0:55 - 0:58I Google Images reverse-searched myself:
-
0:59 - 1:03a function of Google
that allows you to upload an image, -
1:03 - 1:05and it shows you
where it is on the Internet. -
1:06 - 1:08In a split second,
-
1:08 - 1:13my screen was flooded with that image
-
1:13 - 1:16and dozens more images of me
-
1:16 - 1:19that had been stolen from my social media,
-
1:19 - 1:22on links connected to porn sites.
-
1:24 - 1:30On these sites, nameless,
faceless sexual predators -
1:30 - 1:34had published highly explicit
sexual commentary about me -
1:34 - 1:36and what they'd like to do to me.
-
1:36 - 1:39"Cover her face, and we'd fuck her body,"
-
1:39 - 1:41one person wrote.
-
1:43 - 1:47They also published
identifying information about me: -
1:47 - 1:51where I lived, what I studied, who I was,
-
1:52 - 1:54but things got worse.
-
1:54 - 1:58I soon discovered
that these sexual predators -
1:58 - 2:03had doctored or photoshopped my face
-
2:03 - 2:09onto the bodies of naked adult actresses
engaged in sexual intercourse, -
2:09 - 2:13of me being ejaculated on by two men.
-
2:14 - 2:17Sperm was edited onto my face.
-
2:17 - 2:21I was edited onto the cover of a porn DVD.
-
2:21 - 2:24Perpetrators had edited my images
-
2:24 - 2:29to give the effect that my blouse
was transparent, or see-through, -
2:29 - 2:31so you could see my nipples.
-
2:33 - 2:36Perpetrators ejaculated on images of me,
-
2:37 - 2:44took photos of their sperm
and penises on these images -
2:44 - 2:46and posted them onto porn sites.
-
2:47 - 2:50"Cum on printed pics"
is what they call it. -
2:50 - 2:52Now, you might be wondering
-
2:53 - 2:56what sorts of images
I posted on social media. -
2:57 - 3:01This is me, at around 19
at the Claremont Hotel, -
3:01 - 3:02just a few suburbs away.
-
3:03 - 3:08And they superimposed that face into this.
-
3:10 - 3:12And things got worse.
-
3:12 - 3:14Nothing was off limits
for these predators. -
3:14 - 3:19They even posted an image
with my little sister on these sites too. -
3:20 - 3:22Now, you might be thinking,
-
3:22 - 3:24"Well, you do dress provocatively,
-
3:25 - 3:27even a little sexually suggestive,
-
3:30 - 3:32attention seeking maybe."
-
3:33 - 3:36But just because a woman's body
gets attention, -
3:36 - 3:38doesn't mean she's attention-seeking.
-
3:38 - 3:40And what is provocative anyway?
-
3:40 - 3:42What is sexually suggestive?
-
3:42 - 3:46In some parts of the world,
showing your ankles is provocative. -
3:48 - 3:51It's just like,
no matter what a woman wears, -
3:51 - 3:55it's always perceived
as more sexual than it is. -
3:56 - 4:00For me, I just wanted
to feel pretty and confident. -
4:01 - 4:02What's so wrong with that?
-
4:03 - 4:05Now, you might be thinking,
-
4:05 - 4:09"Well, can't you just set
your social media on private?" -
4:10 - 4:12Well, these perpetrators were calculated.
-
4:13 - 4:16They befriended my friends
on social media -
4:16 - 4:18under fake profiles.
-
4:18 - 4:21They followed the public galleries
-
4:21 - 4:25of the events and places
I regularly visited. -
4:25 - 4:29Why should one have to retreat and hide
-
4:29 - 4:32out of fear that something
like this could happen? -
4:32 - 4:35What I post and what I wear
-
4:35 - 4:38isn't an invitation
to violate and abuse me. -
4:39 - 4:42The only person that should be
changing their behavior -
4:43 - 4:45is the perpetrators.
-
4:46 - 4:49(Applause)
-
4:56 - 4:58Now, you might be thinking, "Why me?"
-
4:59 - 5:05Well I'm just one
of the thousands upon thousands -
5:05 - 5:09of ordinary women
who are being preyed upon -
5:09 - 5:16in these mass-scale, horrific,
online cultures, websites and threads -
5:16 - 5:21that are dedicated
to sexually exploiting and doctoring -
5:21 - 5:24ordinary images of women into porn.
-
5:24 - 5:26As I speak,
-
5:26 - 5:29there are women who are being preyed upon
and they don't even know it. -
5:30 - 5:34In the beginning, I tried seeking help.
-
5:34 - 5:37I went to police;
I contacted government agencies. -
5:37 - 5:41I even tried to hire
a private investigator, -
5:41 - 5:43but they were too expensive.
-
5:43 - 5:45But there was nothing that they could do.
-
5:45 - 5:47I mean, what could you do
-
5:47 - 5:52when the sites are hosted overseas
and the perpetrators are from overseas? -
5:53 - 5:57I was told I had to contact
the sites one by one, -
5:57 - 5:59notifying the web masters
-
5:59 - 6:01to get everything deleted.
-
6:01 - 6:03And so, as you can imagine,
-
6:04 - 6:08in complete and utter fear and pain,
-
6:08 - 6:10I did.
-
6:10 - 6:12I contacted the web masters,
-
6:13 - 6:17requesting that they delete
the material shared without consent. -
6:18 - 6:21And I had some successes,
-
6:21 - 6:24but I also had some major setbacks.
-
6:25 - 6:26The more I fought,
-
6:28 - 6:30the more sites I would discover,
-
6:30 - 6:34and with time, the more my images
were being seen and shared -
6:34 - 6:36in the tens of thousands.
-
6:38 - 6:41I had one web master respond to me,
-
6:41 - 6:44saying he'll only delete the site
-
6:45 - 6:49if I sent him nude photos
of myself within 24 hours. -
6:50 - 6:52And this went on for years,
-
6:52 - 6:55fighting against these dodgy,
disgusting sites. -
6:56 - 6:59But I was fighting a losing battle,
-
6:59 - 7:02and I couldn't continue this
any longer for my own mental health. -
7:03 - 7:05But what could I do?
-
7:05 - 7:07Maybe, I thought,
-
7:08 - 7:10if I spoke out,
-
7:10 - 7:12I could reclaim my name,
-
7:13 - 7:16and I could rewrite my narrative
on my own terms. -
7:16 - 7:21Maybe if I spoke out,
I could raise awareness about this. -
7:21 - 7:25Maybe I could even try to change the law.
-
7:26 - 7:28And so I did.
-
7:29 - 7:32(Applause)
-
7:38 - 7:41I spoke out publicly late last year,
-
7:41 - 7:45and news of my story
reverberated around the world. -
7:46 - 7:48But this was the response.
-
7:48 - 7:50"She's a fat, ugly slut."
-
7:50 - 7:51"She's a whore."
-
7:51 - 7:54"She's an attention-seeking
piece of trash." -
7:56 - 7:59"Feel flattered, baby, it's a compliment."
-
7:59 - 8:03I was victim-blamed and slut-shamed
-
8:03 - 8:06and told I was deserving
of what happened to me. -
8:08 - 8:09And quite frankly,
-
8:10 - 8:13that was more difficult for me to endure
-
8:13 - 8:17than my actual experiences
of image-based abuse. -
8:20 - 8:23But I couldn't let
this criticism defeat me. -
8:23 - 8:26I knew what the perpetrators
had done was wrong, -
8:26 - 8:29and I knew what they were doing
to others was wrong. -
8:29 - 8:31And so, I petitioned.
-
8:32 - 8:35I sent out impassioned pleas for support.
-
8:37 - 8:38But it didn't work.
-
8:38 - 8:41I think I got like 330 signatures,
-
8:42 - 8:44and that was really disheartening.
-
8:45 - 8:49But I then contacted
my state and federal MPs, -
8:50 - 8:53and I was referred to the New South Wales
Attorney General's Department, -
8:54 - 8:59who were already in the process
of drafting new laws -
8:59 - 9:04to criminalize the non-consensual
distribution of intimate images: -
9:04 - 9:06image-based sexual abuse.
-
9:06 - 9:09Some of you may know it as revenge porn.
-
9:09 - 9:14And soon, I became a spokesperson,
a public face for the new laws. -
9:15 - 9:16But I must point out,
-
9:16 - 9:19I do not in any way, shape or form,
want to take credit -
9:19 - 9:21for this change in the law.
-
9:21 - 9:24This is on the backs
of cybersafety experts, -
9:24 - 9:25of researchers,
-
9:25 - 9:27of the Attorney General's Department,
-
9:27 - 9:30of so many people
who have fought for years. -
9:31 - 9:33But for the first time ever,
-
9:34 - 9:37New South Wales was the first
state in all the world -
9:38 - 9:42to specifically include a provision
on altering images. -
9:42 - 9:43Something that happened to me,
-
9:43 - 9:46something you certainly
don't hear about very often. -
9:46 - 9:50And now ACT has also criminalized this,
-
9:50 - 9:53also with a provision on altered images.
-
9:53 - 9:56And next year, WA
is introducing legislation, -
9:57 - 10:01and hopefully, they introduce
a provision on altered images. -
10:01 - 10:05And I urge every state and every country
in this world to follow suit -
10:05 - 10:08because right now, there's no justice
for people like me. -
10:11 - 10:12Despite it all,
-
10:13 - 10:15despite the hate
and despite the criticism, -
10:15 - 10:18despite the fact that I'm never
going to get justice, -
10:18 - 10:22because my experience has happened
before this movement of law reform, -
10:23 - 10:26speaking out was the best thing
I've ever done, -
10:26 - 10:29because I know for a fact
that it's helped people. -
10:29 - 10:32And I just want to live in a world
-
10:32 - 10:35where regardless of what I wear
or what I post, -
10:35 - 10:40that I'm still worthy of being treated
with dignity and respect. -
10:42 - 10:43Respect.
-
10:44 - 10:47Now, that's an idea worth sharing.
-
10:47 - 10:48(Applause)
-
10:48 - 10:49Thank you.
-
10:49 - 10:52(Applause)
- Title:
- Sexual predators edited my photos into porn - how I fought back | Noelle Martin | TEDxPerth
- Description:
-
Who is the person behind the porn photo? Did she consent to that image being shared and viewed by thousands? What is the impact on her life? New media has seen an emergence of non-consensual distribution of intimate images. Often called "revenge porn," it is a devastating form of sexual assault for the victims who are degraded by porn consumers and slut-shamed by the public. (This talk contains mature content.)
Noelle Martin tells of her fight to reclaim her image. She shares the journey from victim to law reform activist striving for a global response to this global problem. Noelle Martin went from victim to survivor to law reform activist for the criminalization of image-based sexual abuse. She fights to dismantle the shame and taboo around women's sexuality and the hyper-sexualization of women's bodies. She has fought for the criminalization of image-based abuse in New South Wales and continues to lobby the Commonwealth Government to enact specific criminal laws to combat image-based abuse.
Noelle is completing her Bachelor's degree in Law/Arts, majoring in philosophy at Macquarie University, Sydney. Born and raised in Perth, she was the 2010 Western Australia's Women's Chess Champion and has worked as a chess teacher during her university studies. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
