Ellen DeGeneres at Tulane's 2009 Commencement Speech
-
0:01 - 0:05Thank you President Cowan, Mrs. President Cowan
-
0:05 - 0:07distinguished guests
-
0:07 - 0:09undistinguished guests
-
0:09 - 0:10you know who you are.
-
0:10 - 0:14Honored faculty, and creepy Spanish teacher.
-
0:14 - 0:17And thank you to all the graduating
-
0:17 - 0:20class of 2009, I realize most of you are hung over
-
0:20 - 0:21have splitting headaches
-
0:21 - 0:23and haven't slept since Fat Tuesday, but
-
0:23 - 0:28you can graduate until I finish, so listen up!
-
0:28 - 0:30When I was asked to make the commencement speech
-
0:30 - 0:34I immediately said yes
-
0:34 - 0:36then I went to look up what commencement meant.
-
0:36 - 0:40Which would have been easy if I had a dictionary, but most of the books in
-
0:40 - 0:45our house are Portia's and they are all written in Australlian
-
0:45 - 0:50So, I had to break the word down myself, to find out
-
0:50 - 0:53the meaning, commencement.
-
0:53 - 0:56Common and cement.
-
0:56 - 0:59Common cement.
-
0:59 - 1:03You commonly see cement on sidewalks, sidewalks have cracks and if you step
-
1:03 - 1:12on a crack you break your mothers back. So there's that.
-
1:12 - 1:17But I'm honored that you've asked me here to speak at your common cement.
-
1:17 - 1:21I thought that you had to be a famous alumi, alumnus, aluminum...
-
1:21 - 1:26I thought you had to graduate from the school.
-
1:26 - 1:32I didn't go to college, here, and I don't know if President Cowan knows...I didn't go to college at all...
-
1:32 - 1:35any college...And I'm not saying you wasted your time or money
-
1:35 - 1:50but look at me, I'm a huge celebrity.
-
1:50 - 1:56Although I did graduate from the school of hard knocks, our mascot was the knockers...
-
1:56 - 2:00I spent a lot of time here growing up, my mom worked at Newcom, and I would go there
-
2:00 - 2:03every time I needed to steal something out of her purse.
-
2:03 - 2:05But why am I here today? Clearly not to steal
-
2:05 - 2:08you're too far away and I'd never get away with it.
-
2:08 - 2:11I'm here because of you. I can't think of a more tenacious
-
2:11 - 2:15more courageous graduating class. I mean look at you
-
2:15 - 2:18all wearing your robes. Usually when you're wearing a robe at ten in the morning
-
2:18 - 2:24it means you've given up
-
2:24 - 2:28I'm here
-
2:28 - 2:32because I love New Orleans.
-
2:32 - 2:34I was born and raised here, and spent my formative years here
-
2:34 - 2:42and like you, while I was living here, I only did laundry six times.
-
2:42 - 2:44When I finished school I was completely lost. And by school
-
2:44 - 2:47I mean middle school, but I went ahead and finished
-
2:47 - 2:50High School anyway. And I really had no ambition
-
2:50 - 2:54I didn't know what I wanted to do. I did everything
-
2:54 - 2:57I shucked oysters, I was a hostess, I was a bartender
-
2:57 - 3:02I was a waitress, I painted houses, I sold vacuum cleaners
-
3:02 - 3:07I had no idea and I thought I'd just finally settle on some job
-
3:07 - 3:10and I'd make enough money to pay my rent, maybe have
-
3:10 - 3:13basic cable, maybe not, I didn't really have a plan.
-
3:13 - 3:18And by the time I was your age I thought I knew who I was, but really, I had no idea
-
3:18 - 3:27Like, for example, when I was your age, I was dating men.
-
3:27 - 3:34So what I'm saying is that when your older, most of you will be gay.
-
3:35 - 3:38Is anybody writing this stuff down?
-
3:38 - 3:44Parents?
-
3:44 - 3:48Anyway, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life
-
3:48 - 3:53and the way I ended up on this path was from a very tragic event
-
3:53 - 3:57I was maybe 19, and my girlfriend at the time
-
3:57 - 4:00was killed in a car accident
-
4:00 - 4:04and I passed the accident and I didn't know it was her
-
4:04 - 4:07and I kept going, and I found out shortly after
-
4:07 - 4:10that it was her.
-
4:10 - 4:12And I was living in a basement apartment, and I had
-
4:12 - 4:18no money. I had no heat, no air, I had a mattress on the floor
-
4:18 - 4:21and the apartment was infested with fleas, and I was soul
-
4:21 - 4:24searching, and I was like why is she suddenly gone and
-
4:24 - 4:26there are fleas here?
-
4:26 - 4:28I don't understand and there must be a purpose
-
4:28 - 4:31and wouldn't it be convenient if we could just pick
-
4:31 - 4:34up the phone and call God, and and ask these questions
-
4:34 - 4:37and I started writing and what poured out of me was
-
4:37 - 4:40an imaginary conversation with God, which was one sided
-
4:40 - 4:44and I finished writing it and I looked at it, and I said to
-
4:44 - 4:47myself -- and I hadn't even been doing stand up -- there
-
4:47 - 4:49was no club in town, and I said I'm going to do this on the
-
4:49 - 4:52the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson
-
4:52 - 4:55at the time he was the king, and I'm gonna be the
-
4:55 - 4:58first woman on the history of the show to be called
-
4:58 - 4:59over to sit down, and several years later
-
4:59 - 5:01I was the first woman in the history of the show,
-
5:01 - 5:04and the only woman in the history of the show,
-
5:04 - 5:07to sit down, because of that phone conversation with
-
5:07 - 5:12God that I wrote. And I started this path of standup
-
5:12 - 5:15and it was successful, and it was great, but it was hard
-
5:15 - 5:19because I was trying to please everybody, and I had this
-
5:19 - 5:21secret that I was keeping that I was gay, and I thought that if
-
5:21 - 5:24people found out they wouldn't like me and they wouldn't
-
5:24 - 5:27laugh at me, then my career turned into -- I got my
-
5:27 - 5:30own sitcom, and that was very successful, another level of
-
5:30 - 5:35success, and I thought what if they find out I'm gay? Then they'll never watch...
-
5:35 - 5:38This was a long time ago, this was just when we had
-
5:38 - 5:47White presidents. This was back, many years ago.
-
5:47 - 5:50And I finally
-
5:50 - 5:53decided that I was living with so much shame and so
-
5:53 - 5:56much fear that I just couldn't live that way anymore
-
5:56 - 5:59and I decided to come out, and make it creative
-
5:59 - 6:01and my character would come out at the same time
-
6:01 - 6:03and it wasn't to make a political statement, it wasn't
-
6:03 - 6:06to do anything but free myself from this heaviness that I was
-
6:06 - 6:10carrying around, and I just wanted to be honest, and I thought "What's the worst
-
6:10 - 6:12that could happen? I could loose my careeer..."
-
6:12 - 6:14I did.
-
6:14 - 6:15I lost my career.
-
6:15 - 6:18The show was cancelled after six years without even telling
-
6:18 - 6:22me, I read it in the paper.
-
6:22 - 6:25The phone didn't ring for three years
-
6:25 - 6:27I had no offers, nobody wanted to touch me
-
6:27 - 6:31at all
-
6:31 - 6:33And yet, I was getting letters from kids
-
6:33 - 6:35who almost committed suicide, but didn't
-
6:35 - 6:37because of what I did
-
6:37 - 6:39and I realized that I had a purpose
-
6:39 - 6:42and it wasn't about me, and about celebrity
-
6:42 - 6:44and I felt like I was being punished
-
6:44 - 6:45and it was a bad time
-
6:45 - 6:47and I was angry and I was sad
-
6:47 - 6:50and then I was offered a talk show
-
6:50 - 6:52and the people that offered me the talk show
-
6:52 - 6:54tried to sell it, and most stations
-
6:54 - 6:56didn't want to pick it up
-
6:56 - 6:57most people didn't want to buy it because they
-
6:57 - 6:59thought nobody would watch me
-
6:59 - 7:02and really when I look back on it, I wouldn't
-
7:02 - 7:04change a thing, because really it was so
-
7:04 - 7:07important that I loose everything because I found
-
7:07 - 7:09out what the most important thing is, is to be true
-
7:09 - 7:12to yourself
-
7:12 - 7:14and ultimately, that's what has gotten me to this place
-
7:14 - 7:17I don't live in fear, I'm free, I don't have any secrets
-
7:17 - 7:20and I know I'll always be OK because no matter
-
7:20 - 7:23I know who I am.
-
7:23 - 7:25So in conclusion, when I was younger
-
7:25 - 7:28I thought success was something different
-
7:28 - 7:31I thought, when I grow up, I want to be famous, I want to be a star
-
7:31 - 7:34I want to be in movies, I want to see the world
-
7:34 - 7:38drive nice cars, I wanna have groupies.
-
7:38 - 7:40To quote the Pussy Cat Dolls.
-
7:40 - 7:41how many people thought it was boobies
-
7:41 - 7:43by the way?
-
7:43 - 7:45It's not -- its groupies
-
7:45 - 7:47but my idea of success is different today
-
7:47 - 7:49and as you'll grow, you will realize your definition of
-
7:49 - 7:50success changes.
-
7:50 - 7:52For many of you, today success is
-
7:52 - 7:56being able to hold down 20 shots of tequila
-
7:56 - 7:58for me, the most important thing in your life is to
-
7:58 - 8:00live your life with integrity
-
8:00 - 8:02and not to give in to peer pressure to try to be
-
8:02 - 8:03something that you're not.
-
8:03 - 8:07To live your life as an honest and compassionate person
-
8:07 - 8:09to contribute in some way.
-
8:09 - 8:12so to conclude my conclusion
-
8:12 - 8:14follow your passion, stay true to yourself
-
8:14 - 8:16never follow someone else's path
-
8:16 - 8:17unless your in the woods and your lost
-
8:17 - 8:19and you see a path, then by all means
-
8:19 - 8:24you should follow that
-
8:24 - 8:26Don't give advice, it'll come back and bite you in the ass
-
8:26 - 8:28don't take anyone's advice.
-
8:28 - 8:31So my advice to you is to
-
8:31 - 8:34be true to yourself and everything will be fine
-
8:34 - 8:36and I know a lot of you are concerned about your future
-
8:36 - 8:38but there is no need to worry, the economy is booming
-
8:38 - 8:41the job market is wide open
-
8:41 - 8:44the planet is just fine
-
8:44 - 8:45it's gonna be great
-
8:45 - 8:47You have already survived a hurricane
-
8:47 - 8:49what else can happen to you?
-
8:49 - 8:51And as I mentioned before, sometimes the most devestating
-
8:51 - 8:53things that happen to you will teach you the most
-
8:53 - 8:55and now you know the right questions to ask
-
8:55 - 9:00for your first job interview, like, "Is it above sea level?"
-
9:00 - 9:02so to conclude my conclusion that I've previously
-
9:02 - 9:05concluded in my common cement speech
-
9:05 - 9:08I guess what I'm trying to say is that life is like one big
-
9:08 - 9:10Mardi Gras, but instead of showing people your boobs
-
9:10 - 9:13show em your brain, and if they like what they see
-
9:13 - 9:16you'll have more beads than you'll know what to do with
-
9:16 - 9:18and you'll be drunk.
-
9:18 - 9:20Most of the time.
-
9:20 - 9:22So to the class of 2009 I say congratulations
-
9:22 - 9:24and if you don't remember a thing I said today
-
9:24 - 9:26just remember, you're gonna be OK
-
9:26 - 9:28dum-do-do-du-dum
-
9:28 -just dance
