Spiderman 3 - Making a Masterpiece

  • 0:03 - 0:04
    - [Dunk] I'm finally back-
  • 0:04 - 0:07
Spider-Man 3 is the best movie that Spider-Man made.
  • 0:07 - 0:12
Since it's release in 2007, critics have spent countless hours analyzing every frame
  • 0:12 - 0:13
    every scene
  • 0:13 - 0:17
every line of dialogue in search of it's many subdued themes and messages.
  • 0:17 - 0:18
    Like Garfield,
  • 0:18 - 0:20
    Spider-Man 3 is a film about layers.
  • 0:20 - 0:24
On the surface, It's your typical thrill-a-minute Blockbuster with cutting edge special effects.
  • 0:24 - 0:29
But upon further viewing, you start to understand this is merely a facade.
  • 0:29 - 0:33
A false attempt to placate a broader audience.
  • 0:33 - 0:34
    *whistle sound*
  • 0:35 - 0:38
In superhero movies, you can only tell two different stories, really.
  • 0:38 - 0:39
    The origin story
  • 0:39 - 0:42
or a story about heroes, learning to work together as a team.
  • 0:42 - 0:46
Spider-Man 3 shatters expectations by not giving you the rise of Spider-Man
  • 0:46 - 0:48
    but rather the fall.
  • 0:48 - 0:52
Peter Parker becomes tangled, if you will, in a web of violence and deceit
  • 0:52 - 0:53
    and ultimately
  • 0:53 - 0:54
    becomes the villain.
  • 0:54 - 0:57
The movie starts with Pete. He sees his best friend James Franco
  • 0:57 - 1:00
And he clotheslines him down an alley and kills him
  • 1:09 - 1:11
    Then we're introduced to Sandman
  • 1:11 - 1:13
who we learned is a great father,
  • 1:13 - 1:16
trying to save up enough money to pay for his daughter's surgery.
  • 1:16 - 1:19
So, Spider-Man gets wind of this and, uh?
  • 1:19 - 1:20
    kills him in a sewer.
  • 1:21 - 1:22
    - [Spidey] Good riddance
  • 1:22 - 1:24
    - [Dunk] Then the city throws a parade for Spider-man,
  • 1:24 - 1:27
and he kisses some bimbo, right in front of his girlfriend
  • 1:27 - 1:29
Then he meets this guy, who is actually, uh?
  • 1:29 - 1:30
    his biggest fan
  • 1:31 - 1:33
Up to this part, I kind of figured out
  • 1:33 - 1:35
"Maybe Spider-Man is just having a bad day"
  • 1:35 - 1:37
We all know, he's a good guy at heart.
  • 1:37 - 1:38
    - [Peter] Spider-Man killed him
  • 1:40 - 1:41
    - [May Parker] Spider-Man?
  • 1:42 - 1:44
    I don't understand.
  • 1:44 - 1:46
    Spider-Man doesn't kill people.
  • 1:47 - 1:50
    - [Dunk] But then, fucking stupid ass James Franco
  • 1:50 - 1:52
    starts being alive again
  • 1:52 - 1:55
So, Mary Jane dumps Spider-Man, for no good reason
  • 1:55 - 1:55
    *Comedy Slide Whistle*
  • 1:55 - 1:57
And then, she says "she's seeing another guy"
  • 1:57 - 2:01
Spider-Man, in a state of such distraught and fragility
  • 2:01 - 2:03
Goes to the only guy he thought he could trust
  • 2:03 - 2:04
    James Franco, who goes:
  • 2:04 - 2:05
    - [Franco] "I'm the other guy"
  • 2:06 - 2:09
    - [Dunk] Fucking backstabbing piece of shit James Franco
  • 2:09 - 2:10
    - [Waiter] How's the pie?
  • 2:11 - 2:12
    - [Franco] *Tim Allen's Home Improvement Grunt*
  • 2:12 - 2:13
    - [Dunk] Now, this scene is essential...
  • 2:13 - 2:15
Peter looks back into the cafe
  • 2:15 - 2:17
and that little bitch, winks at him
  • 2:17 - 2:18
    and then BOOM!
  • 2:18 - 2:20
    *honking*
  • 2:21 - 2:23
    Like that, he's gone.
  • 2:23 - 2:24
    Now, the question is...
  • 2:24 - 2:26
Where the hell did he go?
  • 2:26 - 2:28
The truck takes like one second, to go in front of Peter
  • 2:28 - 2:29
    And then he disappears.
  • 2:29 - 2:33
This is where I realized that James Franco is actually
  • 2:33 - 2:34
    hiding under the table.
  • 2:34 - 2:35
    *Ding* Think about it!
  • 2:37 - 2:39
Naturally, Spider-Man slams James Franco into a wall
  • 2:39 - 2:39
    an then-
  • 2:40 - 2:41
chucks a fucking grenade at his head.
  • 2:43 - 2:45
Then we cut to Spider-Man, uh?
  • 2:45 - 2:47
being fed a plate of cookies, and he says:
  • 2:47 - 2:49
    - [Peter] You got any with nuts?
  • 2:49 - 2:49
    - [Ursula] Hmm.
  • 2:49 - 2:51
I have some nuts. I could make some.
  • 2:51 - 2:52
    - [Peter] Go make me some.
  • 2:52 - 2:54
    - [Dunk] "Go make me some cookies with nuts in them"
  • 2:54 - 2:57
Now, this is actually a very clever scene, when you think about.
  • 2:57 - 3:00
In life, there was such a rich variety of cookies
  • 3:00 - 3:01
    Peanut butter, chocolate chip,
  • 3:01 - 3:03
    mint cookies, oatmeal raisin.
  • 3:03 - 3:06
But director Sam Raimi, has Spider-Man consciously choose
  • 3:06 - 3:07
    Nut cookies
  • 3:07 - 3:10
to signify, that this man has gone nuts.
  • 3:10 - 3:11
    Do you guys get that?
  • 3:11 - 3:14
You have the scene where Spider-Man is pointing at various women on the sidewalk
  • 3:14 - 3:17
now, look at the gesture he's making with his hand.
  • 3:17 - 3:19
He is saying to these women, "you're safe now"
  • 3:19 - 3:22
But in Spider-Man 4, I will shoot you with a pistol.
  • 3:22 - 3:24
But, it's not until THIS moment
  • 3:24 - 3:28
where we, the viewers, see that faint flicker of hope, within Peter, snuffed out.
  • 3:28 - 3:30
    He changes his hair
  • 3:30 - 3:31
    from. Uh?
  • 3:31 - 3:34
*stutter* the normal way to this Evil hair.
  • 3:34 - 3:36
This is when the Spider-Man, that I knew
  • 3:36 - 3:37
    who had lost Uncle Ben
  • 3:38 - 3:39
    who'd defeated Bonesaw
  • 3:39 - 3:42
This is when he had become truly lost.
  • 3:42 - 3:44
    - [Peter] You'll get your rent
when you fix this damn door!
  • 3:46 - 3:50
    - [Dunk] Spider-Man 3 tells a dark story that confronts the audience with serious questions
  • 3:50 - 3:51
    and for this reason,
  • 3:51 - 3:54
I think it became a very divisive film.
  • 3:54 - 3:56
    - [Tobey] I talked a lot with Sam Raimi about-
  • 3:56 - 3:58
    about the tone of that
  • 3:58 - 4:03
of the character and how far to go with the darker side of Peter Parker
  • 4:03 - 4:05
and for me, I just kept pushing.
  • 4:05 - 4:07
I wanted to explore that, further and further
  • 4:07 - 4:09
    - [Dunk] It's a movie from a different era
  • 4:09 - 4:11
where artists were encouraged to take bold risks
  • 4:11 - 4:13
    uninhibited by close-minded executives
  • 4:13 - 4:17
And I sincerely doubt we'll ever see Marvel, reach these heights again.
  • 4:17 - 4:18
    Like Alfred said:
  • 4:18 - 4:21
"with big power comes big responsibility"
  • 4:21 - 4:22
