Not Synced
I will never forget the first time
I visited a client in jail.
-
Not Synced
The heavy metal door slammed behind me,
-
Not Synced
and I heard the key turn in the lock.
-
Not Synced
The cement floor underneath me
had a sticky film on it
-
Not Synced
that made a ripping sound,
-
Not Synced
like tape being pulled off a box,
-
Not Synced
every time I moved my foot.
-
Not Synced
The only connection to the outside world
was a small window placed too high to see.
-
Not Synced
There was a small, square table
bolted to the floor
-
Not Synced
and two metal chairs,
-
Not Synced
one on either side.
-
Not Synced
That was the first time
I understood viscerally,
-
Not Synced
just for a fleeting moment,
-
Not Synced
what incarceration might feel like.
-
Not Synced
And I promised myself all those years ago
as a young, public defender
-
Not Synced
that I would never,
ever forget that feeling.
-
Not Synced
And I never have.
-
Not Synced
It inspired me to fight for each
ane every one of my clients' freedom
-
Not Synced
as if it was my own.
-
Not Synced
Freedom.
-
Not Synced
A concept so fundamental
to the American psyche
-
Not Synced
that it is enshrined in our consitution.
-
Not Synced
And yet,
-
Not Synced
America is addicted to imprisonment.
-
Not Synced
From slavery through mass incarceration,
-
Not Synced
it always has been.
-
Not Synced
Look, we all know the shocking numbers.
-
Not Synced
The United States incarcerates
more people per capita
-
Not Synced
than almost any nation on the planet.
