Master Shi Heng Yi – 5 hindrances to self-mastery | Shi Heng Yi | TEDxVitosha
-
0:24 - 0:26Good morning.
-
0:26 - 0:27(Ethereal music)
-
0:27 - 0:30It has been quite a privilege
-
0:30 - 0:37being able to grow up
in two quite different ways of life. -
0:38 - 0:40I was born in Germany,
-
0:40 - 0:44and at the same time had the chance
-
0:44 - 0:49to learn more about an ancient art
coming from the Shaolin Temple. -
0:49 - 0:52When you grow up in an Asian family,
-
0:52 - 0:53it is quite common
-
0:53 - 0:58that firstly, you don't argue
with your father, -
0:59 - 1:03and secondly, you either
become medical doctor, -
1:04 - 1:06engineer, or lawyer.
-
1:06 - 1:12Elsewise your parents
will be very unhappy. -
1:12 - 1:16So having that said,
-
1:16 - 1:22I finished my academic education
with two university degrees, -
1:22 - 1:23an MBA,
-
1:24 - 1:29and quite a collection
of different certificates and diplomas - -
1:29 - 1:35everything that my parents thought
would be useful to have. -
1:35 - 1:39But throughout this education,
-
1:41 - 1:43I felt something was missing.
-
1:44 - 1:50Because I was learning
about many different aspects - -
1:51 - 1:53how the plant is working,
-
1:53 - 1:56what an atom is made out of,
-
1:56 - 1:59how a political system is functioning,
-
2:00 - 2:04but somehow, the subject was missing
-
2:04 - 2:08to learn something about myself.
-
2:10 - 2:12So with the age of four,
-
2:12 - 2:13for the first time
-
2:13 - 2:18I got introduced
into the monastic practices, -
2:19 - 2:25and I was very happy to find out
that the main part of these practices -
2:25 - 2:31were dealing with the exploration
and the discovery of yourself. -
2:33 - 2:35There was mental training,
-
2:37 - 2:43development of behavior
combined with the physical training, -
2:43 - 2:49all aspects of what nowadays
is known as Shaolin Kung-Fu. -
2:51 - 2:53Now, despite the wishes of my parents
-
2:53 - 2:59to somehow go out in the market
and try to manage the world, -
3:00 - 3:06I decided to continue this monastic life
-
3:07 - 3:12and start learning more
about myself first. -
3:13 - 3:17Now, in the preparation for this talk,
-
3:17 - 3:22I was asked to share a few words on
-
3:23 - 3:26what is important in this lifetime,
-
3:28 - 3:29and see,
-
3:32 - 3:35it's already challenging
-
3:36 - 3:40to put three decades into a single talk.
-
3:42 - 3:46But the picture I would like to show you
-
3:47 - 3:49summarizes very much
-
3:51 - 3:55what I consider
as being valuable in this lifetime. -
3:57 - 4:03There is something
about sharing with others. -
4:04 - 4:07There is something about connection.
-
4:07 - 4:11There is the training
and development of yourself. -
4:11 - 4:16It is to enjoy your time,
even doing nothing. -
4:16 - 4:19And one main aspect is
-
4:20 - 4:21to find a way
-
4:22 - 4:26and do the things you like to do.
-
4:27 - 4:30Now, when I received the invitation
-
4:31 - 4:33to have a talk at today's event,
-
4:33 - 4:37especially under the slogan
"High, Higher, Highest," -
4:38 - 4:43something very particular
came up on my mind, -
4:43 - 4:48and a master from the Shaolin Temple
-
4:49 - 4:55once told me a story
that I would like to share with you. -
4:56 - 4:59(Flute music)
-
5:01 - 5:03A man was living close to a mountain,
-
5:04 - 5:07and every day he was thinking:
-
5:07 - 5:11How would it be to climb that mountain
-
5:11 - 5:14and what would I see on the peak?
-
5:14 - 5:20So finally, the day came,
and the man went on the journey. -
5:22 - 5:24Arriving at the foot of the mountain,
-
5:24 - 5:26he met the first traveler.
-
5:27 - 5:28So he asked,
-
5:29 - 5:34"How did you get up the mountain,
and what did you see from the top?" -
5:34 - 5:36And so the traveler shared his path,
-
5:36 - 5:39and also the view that he had.
-
5:40 - 5:42But then the man was thinking,
-
5:44 - 5:49"The way that this traveler described
to me sounds very exhausting. -
5:50 - 5:53I need to find another way to climb."
-
5:54 - 5:57So he continued to walk
on the foot of the mountain -
5:57 - 5:59until he met the next traveler.
-
5:59 - 6:02So once again he asked,
-
6:02 - 6:05"How did you climb up that mountain,
-
6:05 - 6:08and what did you see from the top?"
-
6:09 - 6:12And so again the traveler
shared his story. -
6:14 - 6:18Still not being determined
on which direction and which way to go, -
6:20 - 6:25the man asked 30 more people,
30 more travelers. -
6:26 - 6:28When he finished talking to all of them,
-
6:28 - 6:31he finally made up his mind.
-
6:31 - 6:35"Now that so many people
already shared with me their paths -
6:35 - 6:39and especially what
they all saw from the top, -
6:39 - 6:41I don't need to climb there anymore."
-
6:42 - 6:44It is very unfortunate
-
6:44 - 6:47this man never went on the journey.
-
6:49 - 6:52Now, to conclude this story,
-
6:53 - 6:54firstly,
-
6:56 - 7:02each individual needs to find
the most suitable way -
7:02 - 7:04to climb that mountain.
-
7:06 - 7:10But secondly, there is information
-
7:10 - 7:14possible to be shared with words,
-
7:15 - 7:17but it is impossible
-
7:19 - 7:23to share the experience of clarity
-
7:23 - 7:27when you are standing
on that peak by yourself. -
7:29 - 7:34To invest the right effort
-
7:35 - 7:37in climbing that peak,
-
7:38 - 7:44it's very much what
all the Buddhist practices, -
7:45 - 7:46the Shaolin training,
-
7:48 - 7:51or any spiritual practice is about.
-
7:53 - 7:57Clarity means you see more clear.
-
7:58 - 8:03When you see more clear,
interrelations become more apparent. -
8:04 - 8:05When you see more clear,
-
8:05 - 8:12there is no need to believe anyone
or believe anything. -
8:13 - 8:17Seeing clear means
you can distinguish for yourself -
8:17 - 8:21which is the proper direction to take
-
8:21 - 8:25and which decisions do I have to make
-
8:25 - 8:32in order to make my goals
or aspirations start to shape? -
8:32 - 8:36Now, at today's talk,
you will have the chance -
8:36 - 8:41to become inspired
by quite a lot of different travelers. -
8:41 - 8:44But in this particular talk,
-
8:45 - 8:49I can't, and I won't tell you
which way to go. -
8:51 - 8:57It's just that along
your personal journey, -
8:59 - 9:02you will encounter challenges.
-
9:03 - 9:07Those challenges will either prevent you,
-
9:07 - 9:10or some of them even stop you,
-
9:10 - 9:14from moving on and climbing that mountain.
-
9:15 - 9:19In the Shaolin Temple,
we refer to them -
9:19 - 9:24as "the five hindrances."
-
9:25 - 9:31The five hindrances are describing
different states of the mind. -
9:33 - 9:35In those states of the mind,
-
9:35 - 9:38it becomes very hard to see clearly
-
9:38 - 9:42and therefore engage
in the right decisions. -
9:42 - 9:47The first hindrance
is called "sensual desire." -
9:47 - 9:51Sensual desire arises in the moment
-
9:51 - 9:54when you are paying
attention to something -
9:54 - 9:58that is giving you a positive emotion.
-
9:59 - 10:05This positive emotion can originate
from five gates of your body: -
10:06 - 10:12Seeing, hearing, smelling,
tasting, or feeling. -
10:13 - 10:18So in your mind,
you climb up that mountain. -
10:20 - 10:22After one mile of walking,
-
10:22 - 10:26you discover a beautiful restaurant
-
10:27 - 10:30surrounded by beautiful people.
-
10:31 - 10:36You smell delicious food
and the great variety of beverages. -
10:36 - 10:39When you follow that temptation,
-
10:40 - 10:43you have already lost your track.
-
10:44 - 10:48When this temptation becomes so strong
-
10:49 - 10:52that you don't want
to leave that place anymore, -
10:53 - 10:58then the sensual desire
has turned into an obsession. -
11:00 - 11:01In both cases,
-
11:02 - 11:08remaining at that place means
that you can't get clarity. -
11:08 - 11:12The second hindrance, "ill-will,"
-
11:12 - 11:15describes the state of the mind
-
11:15 - 11:19that arises from negative emotions.
-
11:19 - 11:22In that state of the mind,
-
11:22 - 11:28you have an aversion,
a rejection, or simply a dislike -
11:28 - 11:35against either an object, a situation,
or can be even a person. -
11:37 - 11:39To simplify, it means:
-
11:39 - 11:42You are climbing the mountain,
-
11:42 - 11:44and it starts to rain,
-
11:44 - 11:46but you don't like rain.
-
11:47 - 11:50You discover the roads are bumpy,
-
11:50 - 11:53but you don't like bumpy roads.
-
11:54 - 11:57In order to cross the river,
you need to swim, -
11:57 - 12:00but you don’t like swimming.
-
12:00 - 12:03Whatever it is that you dislike,
-
12:03 - 12:06it won’t make it a pleasant journey
-
12:08 - 12:11unless you learn
to let go of this ill-will. -
12:11 - 12:16It’s more likely even
that you won't continue that journey. -
12:16 - 12:21The third hindrance originally
translated as "sloth and torpor." -
12:21 - 12:24"Sloth" means it’s
the heaviness of the body. -
12:24 - 12:28"Torpor" means it’s
the dullness of the mind. -
12:28 - 12:31It is characterized by sleepiness,
-
12:32 - 12:34non-motivation,
-
12:34 - 12:36lack of energy,
-
12:36 - 12:40and oftentimes can manifest itself
-
12:40 - 12:44in a state of depression.
-
12:45 - 12:51Now, a simile used in Buddhism
describes it as "imprisonment." -
12:51 - 12:55You find yourself locked in a cell.
-
12:55 - 12:57It becomes very hard
-
12:57 - 13:02to make any type
of mental or physical effort. -
13:02 - 13:05So in order to continue your path,
-
13:05 - 13:08there is only one option left.
-
13:08 - 13:13You need to find a way to get out
from that hole, from that cell. -
13:13 - 13:19Now, the fourth hindrance
is called "restlessness." -
13:19 - 13:23It is the state of an unsettled mind.
-
13:23 - 13:27"Unsettle mind" means
your mind cannot settle. -
13:27 - 13:29(Laughter)
Settle where? -
13:29 - 13:31Settle in the present moment.
-
13:31 - 13:37An unsettled mind
either is worrying about the future -
13:37 - 13:40or traveling into the past
-
13:40 - 13:42and rejecting,
-
13:43 - 13:48judging about an event
that happened into your past. -
13:48 - 13:52A simile used here is the monkey mind,
-
13:52 - 13:56constantly jumping
from one branch to another, -
13:56 - 14:01unable to stay for too long time
at the present moment. -
14:02 - 14:08The problem is there is no time
to see clearly anymore. -
14:09 - 14:13Now, the last of the five hindrances
is called "skeptical doubt," -
14:13 - 14:18and it's very closely related
to a state of mind -
14:18 - 14:21which is based on indecisiveness.
-
14:22 - 14:27It is very easy in that state of mind
getting lost in thoughts. -
14:27 - 14:29Can I do this?
-
14:29 - 14:32Is this the right path?
-
14:32 - 14:34What will the others say?
-
14:34 - 14:36What if this? What if that?
-
14:36 - 14:40The mind cannot synchronize
with your own actions anymore. -
14:40 - 14:42And the result is
-
14:42 - 14:44that you are getting disconnected
-
14:44 - 14:49with the goals and aspirations
that once you have set to yourself. -
14:49 - 14:52When the way is filled
with too much doubts, -
14:52 - 14:57more often you will stop
instead of moving on. -
15:00 - 15:03That we know the five hindrances now,
-
15:04 - 15:06what are we going to do about them?
-
15:09 - 15:15You need to align and structure
your life in such a way -
15:16 - 15:21to prevent those hindrances from arising.
-
15:21 - 15:24If you are not successful,
-
15:26 - 15:30you need to use techniques
in order to remove them. -
15:31 - 15:38Each of these hindrances is placing
the dark cloud on your mind, -
15:38 - 15:41or on the way of your climb.
-
15:42 - 15:44Simply remember one thing:
-
15:46 - 15:48Just let it rain.
-
15:48 - 15:50(Sound of rain)
-
15:50 - 15:55This is a four step method
-
15:55 - 15:59to help you removing those hindrances.
-
15:59 - 16:02The first step is recognize
-
16:02 - 16:07in what state of the mind
you are finding yourself in. -
16:07 - 16:09[Recognize, Accept,
Investigate, Non-Identity] -
16:09 - 16:14Afterwards, learn to accept, acknowledge,
-
16:14 - 16:18and allow the situation or a person
-
16:18 - 16:20to be the way how it is,
-
16:20 - 16:23to be the way how they are.
-
16:25 - 16:28Investigate your
emotional and mental state, -
16:28 - 16:30and ask questions:
-
16:32 - 16:34Why did it come up?
-
16:35 - 16:39What is going to be the consequence
if I remain in that state? -
16:41 - 16:44And ultimately, non-identification means:
-
16:45 - 16:47It is the practice.
-
16:49 - 16:52I am not the body.
-
16:55 - 16:58I am not the mind.
-
16:59 - 17:02I am not my emotion.
-
17:04 - 17:10It's just that I can see
all these three aspects about me. -
17:18 - 17:20All of our lifetimes,
-
17:22 - 17:25all of our lives are too unique
-
17:27 - 17:32to copy the path from someone else.
-
17:35 - 17:38To bring meaning to your life,
-
17:40 - 17:43to bring value into your life,
-
17:45 - 17:48you need to learn and master yourself,
-
17:48 - 17:51and don't let the hindrances stop you.
-
17:53 - 17:56If any of you chooses
-
17:57 - 18:00to climb that path to clarity,
-
18:01 - 18:06I would be very happy
to meet you at the peak. -
18:06 - 18:08(Music) (Applause)

- Master Shi Heng Yi – 5 hindrances to self-mastery | Shi Heng Yi | TEDxVitosha
- Description:
-
Meet Shaolin Master Shi Heng Yi in his serene talk about self-discovery. Learn why rainfall is an essential part of each flowering, and every small step part of the journey to the highest peak. The hindrances along the way to self-discovery and personal growth are easy to overcome. Learn how from his talk.
For more than 30 years, Master Shi Heng Yi has been studying and practicing the interaction between mind and body. His strength is the ability to smoothly combine this knowledge with physical exercises and to practice martial arts –Kung Fu and Qi Gong. He has an academic background but he prefers to live at the Shaolin Temple Europe monastery located in Otterberg, Germany. Since 2010 he has been taking care of the settlement, and he personifies the sustainable development and spreading the Shaolin culture and philosophy. As a contemporary monk, Master Yi holds a smartphone in the folds of his clothes as he sees no contradiction between living together with ancient knowledge and high technology. “The universal law of being successful and happy at the same time means finding the balance,” says master Yi. And as for flying – yes, he really can do it! He only needs a stick and a little space. We expect him to fly in and share about the Shaolin way at TEDxVitosha 2020.
