The virginity fraud

  • 0:01 - 0:03
    Nina Dølvik Brochmann:
    We grew up believing
  • 0:03 - 0:06
that the hymen is a proof of virginity.
  • 0:07 - 0:09
But it turns out, we were wrong.
  • 0:10 - 0:11
    What we discovered
  • 0:11 - 0:16
is that the popular story we're told
    about female virginity
  • 0:16 - 0:20
is based on two anatomical myths.
  • 0:21 - 0:26
    The truth has been known
in medical communities for over 100 years,
  • 0:26 - 0:32
    yet somehow these two myths
    continue to make life difficult
  • 0:32 - 0:34
    for women around the world.
  • 0:36 - 0:39
    Ellen Støkken Dahl:
The first myth is about blood.
  • 0:39 - 0:43
It tells us that the hymen
    breaks and bleeds
  • 0:43 - 0:46
the first time a woman has vaginal sex.
  • 0:47 - 0:51
In other words, if there is no blood
    on the sheets afterwards,
  • 0:51 - 0:54
then the woman was simply not a virgin.
  • 0:55 - 0:59
The second myth is a logical
    consequence of the first.
  • 1:00 - 1:04
    Since the hymen is thought
    to break and bleed,
  • 1:04 - 1:07
    people also believe
    that it actually disappears
  • 1:07 - 1:13
or is in some way radically altered
    during a woman's first intercourse.
  • 1:14 - 1:16
    If that were true,
  • 1:16 - 1:22
one would easily be able to determine
if a woman is a virgin or not
  • 1:22 - 1:24
    by examining her genitals,
  • 1:24 - 1:27
    by doing a virginity check.
  • 1:28 - 1:30
NDB: So that's our two myths:
  • 1:30 - 1:32
    virgins bleed,
  • 1:32 - 1:34
    and hymens are lost forever.
  • 1:35 - 1:38
    Now, this may sound
like a minor issue to you.
  • 1:38 - 1:40
    Why should you care
  • 1:40 - 1:45
about an obscure little skin fold
    on the female body?
  • 1:46 - 1:49
    But the truth is,
this is about so much more
  • 1:49 - 1:52
    than an anatomical misunderstanding.
  • 1:53 - 1:57
    The myths about the hymen
    have lived on for centuries
  • 1:57 - 2:00
    because they have cultural significance.
  • 2:01 - 2:03
They have been used as a powerful tool
  • 2:03 - 2:07
in the effort to control women's sexuality
  • 2:07 - 2:11
    in about every culture,
    religion and historical decade.
  • 2:13 - 2:16
    Women are still mistrusted,
  • 2:16 - 2:17
    shamed,
  • 2:17 - 2:19
    harmed
  • 2:19 - 2:22
    and, in the worst cases,
    subjected to honor killings
  • 2:22 - 2:25
    if they don't bleed
    on their wedding night.
  • 2:26 - 2:31
    Other women are forced
    through degrading virginity checks,
  • 2:31 - 2:34
    simply to obtain a job,
  • 2:35 - 2:37
    to save their reputation
  • 2:37 - 2:38
    or to get married.
  • 2:39 - 2:41
    ESD: Like in Indonesia,
  • 2:41 - 2:46
    where women are systematically examined
    to enter military service.
  • 2:47 - 2:51
After the Egyptian uprisings in 2011,
  • 2:51 - 2:56
a group of female protesters were forced
    to undergo virginity checks
  • 2:56 - 2:58
    by their military.
  • 2:59 - 3:04
    In Oslo, doctors are examining
    the hymens of young girls
  • 3:04 - 3:08
    to reassure parents
that their children are not ruined.
  • 3:09 - 3:11
And sadly, the list goes on.
  • 3:13 - 3:18
Women are so afraid not to live up to
    the myths about the hymen
  • 3:18 - 3:22
    that they choose to use
    different virginity quick fixes
  • 3:22 - 3:24
    to assure a bleeding.
  • 3:25 - 3:27
    That could be plastic surgery,
  • 3:27 - 3:29
    known as "revirgination,"
  • 3:29 - 3:32
it could be vials of blood
poured on the sheets after sex
  • 3:33 - 3:36
    or fake hymens bought online,
  • 3:36 - 3:38
    complete with theater blood
  • 3:38 - 3:43
and a promise to "kiss your deep,
    dark secret goodbye."
  • 3:46 - 3:51
    NDB: By telling girls
that no deed can be kept secret,
  • 3:52 - 3:55
    that their bodies
will reveal them no matter what,
  • 3:56 - 3:59
we have endowed them with fear.
  • 4:00 - 4:03
Girls are afraid of ruining themselves,
  • 4:03 - 4:05
    either through sport,
  • 4:05 - 4:06
    play,
  • 4:06 - 4:07
    tampon use
  • 4:07 - 4:08
    or a sexual activity.
  • 4:10 - 4:13
    We have curtailed their opportunities
    and their freedoms.
  • 4:14 - 4:18
It's time we put an end
    to the virginity fraud.
  • 4:18 - 4:21
It's time we break the myths
    about the hymen
  • 4:21 - 4:23
    once and for all.
  • 4:24 - 4:26
    ESD: We are medical students,
  • 4:26 - 4:28
    sexual health workers
  • 4:28 - 4:32
    and the authors
    of "The Wonder Down Under."
  • 4:32 - 4:33
    (Laughter)
  • 4:34 - 4:37
    That's a popular science book
    about the female genitals.
  • 4:38 - 4:41
    And in our experience,
    people seem to believe
  • 4:41 - 4:45
that the hymen is some kind of a seal
    covering the vaginal opening.
  • 4:46 - 4:50
In Norwegian, it is even called
    "the virgin membrane."
  • 4:50 - 4:53
    And with this,
    we picture something fragile,
  • 4:53 - 4:56
    something easily destructible,
  • 4:56 - 4:58
    something you can rip through,
  • 4:59 - 5:02
perhaps like a sheet of plastic wrapping.
  • 5:03 - 5:07
    You may have wondered
why we brought a hula hoop onstage today.
  • 5:08 - 5:09
    We'll show you.
  • 5:11 - 5:13
    (Laughter)
  • 5:15 - 5:18
Now, it is very hard to hide
  • 5:18 - 5:20
    that something has happened
    to this hoop, right?
  • 5:21 - 5:25
    It is different
before and after I punched it.
  • 5:25 - 5:27
    The seal is broken,
  • 5:28 - 5:29
and unless we change the plastic,
  • 5:29 - 5:31
it won't get back to its intact state.
  • 5:33 - 5:37
So if we wanted to do a virginity check
    on this hoop right here,
  • 5:37 - 5:38
    right now,
  • 5:38 - 5:40
    that would be very easy.
  • 5:41 - 5:46
It's easy to say that this hoop
    is not a virgin anymore.
  • 5:47 - 5:49
    (Laughter)
  • 5:49 - 5:53
    NDB: But the hymen
is nothing like a piece of plastic
  • 5:53 - 5:55
you can wrap around your food,
  • 5:55 - 5:56
    or a seal.
  • 5:56 - 5:58
    In fact ...
  • 6:00 - 6:02
    it's more like this --
  • 6:03 - 6:05
a scrunchie or a rubber band.
  • 6:06 - 6:11
The hymen is a rim of tissue
at the outer opening of the vagina.
  • 6:12 - 6:16
And usually, it has a doughnut
    or a half-moon shape
  • 6:16 - 6:19
    with a large, central hole.
  • 6:20 - 6:21
    But this varies a lot,
  • 6:21 - 6:25
and sometimes hymens can have fringes,
  • 6:25 - 6:27
    it can have several holes,
  • 6:27 - 6:30
or it can consist of lobes.
  • 6:31 - 6:35
    In other words, hymens
naturally vary a lot in looks,
  • 6:35 - 6:40
and that is what makes it so hard
    to do a virginity check.
  • 6:42 - 6:45
ESD: Now that we know a bit more
    about the hymen's anatomy,
  • 6:45 - 6:48
it's time to get back to our two myths:
  • 6:48 - 6:50
    virgins bleed,
  • 6:50 - 6:52
    hymens are lost forever.
  • 6:53 - 6:57
    But the hymen doesn't
    have to break at all.
  • 6:58 - 7:02
The hymen is like a scrunchie
in function as well as in looks.
  • 7:03 - 7:06
And you can stretch a scrunchie, right?
  • 7:07 - 7:08
    (Laughter)
  • 7:08 - 7:11
You can stretch a hymen, too.
  • 7:12 - 7:15
    In fact, it's very elastic.
  • 7:16 - 7:18
And for a lot of women,
  • 7:18 - 7:23
the hymen will be elastic enough
    to handle a vaginal intercourse
  • 7:23 - 7:25
    without sustaining any damage.
  • 7:27 - 7:32
For other women, the hymen may tear a bit
to make room for the penis,
  • 7:33 - 7:35
but that won't make it disappear.
  • 7:35 - 7:38
    But it may look
    a bit different from before.
  • 7:38 - 7:42
    It naturally follows
that you can't examine the hymen
  • 7:42 - 7:44
    to check for virginity status.
  • 7:45 - 7:49
This was noted over 100 years ago in 1906
  • 7:49 - 7:52
by the Norwegian doctor Marie Jeancet.
  • 7:52 - 7:56
She examined a middle-aged sex worker
  • 7:57 - 8:02
    and concluded that her genitalia
were reminiscent of a teenage virgin.
  • 8:04 - 8:06
    But that makes sense, right?
  • 8:06 - 8:10
    Because if her hymen
    was never damaged during sex,
  • 8:10 - 8:12
then what were we expecting to see?
  • 8:14 - 8:18
    ESD: Since hymens come
    in every shape and form,
  • 8:18 - 8:19
    it difficult to know
  • 8:20 - 8:25
if a dent or a fold in it is there
    because of previous damage,
  • 8:25 - 8:28
or if it's just a normal
    anatomical variant.
  • 8:29 - 8:32
    The absurdity of virgin testing
  • 8:33 - 8:39
    is illustrated in a study
    done on 36 pregnant teenagers.
  • 8:40 - 8:42
    When doctors examined their hymens,
  • 8:42 - 8:46
    they could only find
    clear signs of penetration
  • 8:46 - 8:49
in 2 out of the 36 girls.
  • 8:52 - 8:56
    So unless you believe
in 34 cases of virgin births --
  • 8:56 - 8:58
    (Laughter)
  • 8:58 - 9:00
    we must all agree
  • 9:00 - 9:04
    that also our second myth
    has taken a vital blow.
  • 9:05 - 9:09
You simply cannot look a woman
    between her legs
  • 9:09 - 9:11
    and read her sexual story.
  • 9:16 - 9:20
    NDB: Like most myths,
the myths about the hymen are untrue.
  • 9:21 - 9:27
    There is no virgin seal
    that magically disappears after sex,
  • 9:27 - 9:32
    and half of virgins
can easily have sex without bleeding.
  • 9:34 - 9:37
    We wish we could say
    that by removing these myths,
  • 9:37 - 9:39
    everything would be OK,
  • 9:39 - 9:44
that shame, harm and honor killings
    would all just disappear.
  • 9:46 - 9:48
But of course, it's not that simple.
  • 9:49 - 9:52
    Sexual oppression of women
    comes from something much deeper
  • 9:52 - 9:58
    than a simple anatomical misunderstanding
about the properties of the hymen.
  • 9:59 - 10:05
It's a question of cultural and religious
    control of women's sexuality.
  • 10:05 - 10:07
And that is much harder to change.
  • 10:08 - 10:10
    But we must try.
  • 10:12 - 10:16
    ESD: As medical professionals,
    this is our contribution.
  • 10:17 - 10:22
    We want every girl, parent
    and coming husband to know
  • 10:22 - 10:25
what the hymen is and how it works.
  • 10:26 - 10:27
    We want them to know
  • 10:27 - 10:31
that the hymen can't be used
    as a proof of virginity.
  • 10:32 - 10:37
And that way, we can remove
one of the most powerful tools
  • 10:37 - 10:39
used to control young women today.
  • 10:42 - 10:44
    After telling you this,
  • 10:44 - 10:47
you may wonder what the alternative is,
  • 10:49 - 10:53
for if we cannot use the hymen
as a proof of virginity for women,
  • 10:53 - 10:55
    then what should we use?
  • 10:58 - 11:00
    We opt for using nothing.
  • 11:01 - 11:03
    (Cheering)
  • 11:03 - 11:04
    If you --
  • 11:04 - 11:08
    (Applause)
  • 11:10 - 11:14
If you really want to know
if a woman is a virgin or not,
  • 11:15 - 11:16
    ask her.
  • 11:16 - 11:17
    (Laughter)
  • 11:17 - 11:22
    But how she answers
    that question is her choice.
  • 11:24 - 11:25
    Thank you.
  • 11:25 - 11:27
    (Applause)
