A hilarious celebration of lifelong female friendship

  • Not Synced
Pat Mitchell: So I was thinking
    about female friendship a lot,
  • Not Synced
and by the way, these two women
    I'm very honored to say
  • Not Synced
    have been my friends
for a very long time, too.
  • Not Synced
    Jane Fonda: Yes we have.
  • Not Synced
PM: And one of the things
that I read about female friendship
  • Not Synced
is something that Cervantes said, he said:
  • Not Synced
"You can tell a lot about someone,"
  • Not Synced
    in this case a woman,
  • Not Synced
"by the company that she keeps."
  • Not Synced
    So let's start with --
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    JF: We're in big trouble.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
Lily Tomlin: Hand me one of those waters,
  • Not Synced
    I'm extremely dry.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
JF: You're taking up our time.
  • Not Synced
We have a very limited --
  • Not Synced
    LT: Just being with her
sucks the life out of me.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
JF: You ain't seen nothing yet.
  • Not Synced
    Anyway -- sorry.
  • Not Synced
PM: So tell me, what do you
    look for in a friend?
  • Not Synced
LT: I look for someone who has
    a sense of fun,
  • Not Synced
    who's audacious,
  • Not Synced
    who's forthcoming, who has politics,
  • Not Synced
who has even a small scrap
    of passion for the planet,
  • Not Synced
    someone who's decent,
    has a sense of justice,
  • Not Synced
    and who thinks I'm worthwhile.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
JF: You know I was thinking this morning,
  • Not Synced
I don't even know what I would do
    without my women friends.
  • Not Synced
I have my friends, therefore I am.
  • Not Synced
    LT: (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    JF: No, it's true.
  • Not Synced
I exist because I have my women friends.
  • Not Synced
    They --
  • Not Synced
    You're one of them.
  • Not Synced
    I don't know about you.
  • Not Synced
    But anyway --
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
You know, they make me stronger,
    they make me smarter,
  • Not Synced
    they make me braver.
  • Not Synced
They tap me on the shoulder when I might
    be in need of course-correcting.
  • Not Synced
    And most of them are
a good deal younger than me, too.
  • Not Synced
    LT: Thank you.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
JF: No I do, I include you in that,
  • Not Synced
    because listen, you know --
  • Not Synced
it's nice to have somebody still around
to play with and learn from
  • Not Synced
when you're getting toward the end.
  • Not Synced
    LT: I'm glad, I'm glad you --
  • Not Synced
    JF: I'm approaching --
I'll be there sooner than you.
  • Not Synced
LT: No I'm glad to have you
    parallel aging alongside me.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
JF: I'm showing you the way.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
LT: No, you are and you have.
  • Not Synced
PM: Well as we grow older,
  • Not Synced
and as we go through different kinds
    of life's journeys,
  • Not Synced
what do you do to keep
    your friendships vital and alive?
  • Not Synced
LT: Well you have to use a lot of --
  • Not Synced
JF: She doesn't invite me over much,
    I'll tell you that.
  • Not Synced
LT: I have to use a lot of social media --
  • Not Synced
    you be quiet now.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    And so --
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    And I go through --
    I look through my emails,
  • Not Synced
    I look through my emails,
    I look through my texts
  • Not Synced
to find my friends, so I can answer them
    as quickly as possible,
  • Not Synced
because I know they need my counsel.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    They need my support,
  • Not Synced
because most of my friends are writers,
    or activists or actors,
  • Not Synced
    and you're all three,
  • Not Synced
    and a long string
    of other descriptive phrases,
  • Not Synced
and I want to get to you
    as soon as possible,
  • Not Synced
I want you to know that I'm there for you.
  • Not Synced
    JF: Do you do emojis?
  • Not Synced
    LT: Oh ...
  • Not Synced
    JF: No?
  • Not Synced
    LT: It's embarrassing.
  • Not Synced
    JF: I'm really into emojis.
  • Not Synced
LT: No I spell out my --
  • Not Synced
I spell out my words of happiness
    and congratulations,
  • Not Synced
    and sadness.
  • Not Synced
JF: You spell it right out --
  • Not Synced
LT: I spell out every letter.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    JF: Such a purist.
  • Not Synced
    You know,
  • Not Synced
as I've gotten older, I've understood more
    the importance of friendship.
  • Not Synced
So, I really make an effort
to reach out and make play dates --
  • Not Synced
not let too much time go by.
  • Not Synced
    I read a lot so,
  • Not Synced
as Lily knows all too well,
  • Not Synced
    my books that I like,
    I send to my friends.
  • Not Synced
LT: When you knew we would be here today
  • Not Synced
you sent me a lot of books about women,
    female friendships,
  • Not Synced
and I was so surprised to see
    how many books,
  • Not Synced
    how much research
    has been done recently --
  • Not Synced
    JF: And were you grateful?
  • Not Synced
    LT: I was grateful.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    LT: And --
  • Not Synced
    JF: And --
  • Not Synced
LT: Wait, no, it's really important
    because this is another example
  • Not Synced
    of how women are overlooked,
    put aside, marginalized,
  • Not Synced
    there's been very little
    research done on us,
  • Not Synced
even though we volunteered lots of times.
  • Not Synced
    JF: That's for sure.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
LT: No-- this is really exciting,
  • Not Synced
and you all will be interested in this,
  • Not Synced
the Harvard Medical School Study has shown
  • Not Synced
    that women who have
    close female friendships
  • Not Synced
are less likely to develop impairments --
  • Not Synced
    physical impairments as they age,
  • Not Synced
and they are likely to seem to be living
    much more vital, exciting --
  • Not Synced
    JF: and longer --
  • Not Synced
    LT: and joyful lives.
  • Not Synced
JF: We life five years longer than men.
  • Not Synced
LT: I think I'd trade the years for joy.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
LT: And, but the most important part
    is they found --
  • Not Synced
    the results were so exciting
    and so conclusive --
  • Not Synced
    the researchers found
  • Not Synced
that not having close female friends
    is detrimental to your health,
  • Not Synced
as much as smoking or being overweight.
  • Not Synced
    JF: Well -- and there's
    something else, too --
  • Not Synced
LT: I've said my part, so ...
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
JF: Okay, well listen to my part,
    because there's an additional thing.
  • Not Synced
    Because they only --
  • Not Synced
    for years, decades --
  • Not Synced
they only researched men when they
    were trying to understand stress,
  • Not Synced
only very recently have they researched
what happens to women when we're stressed,
  • Not Synced
    and it turns out that
    when we're stressed --women,
  • Not Synced
our bodies get flooded by oxytocin.
  • Not Synced
    Which is a feel-good, calming,
    stress reducing hormone.
  • Not Synced
    Which also is increased
when we're with our women friends.
  • Not Synced
And I do think that's one reason
    why we live longer.
  • Not Synced
And I feel so bad for men
    because they don't have that.
  • Not Synced
    Testosterone in men diminishes
    the effects of oxytocin.
  • Not Synced
LT: Well when you and I
    and Dolly made "9 to 5" --
  • Not Synced
    JF: Oh --
  • Not Synced
    LT: We laughed, we did,
    we laughed so much,
  • Not Synced
we found we had so much in common.
  • Not Synced
    And we're so different.
  • Not Synced
Here she is like Hollywood royalty,
  • Not Synced
I'm like a tough kid from Detroit,
  • Not Synced
    she's a southern kid
from a poor town in Tennessee,
  • Not Synced
and we found we were so in sync as women,
  • Not Synced
    and we must have--
  • Not Synced
we laughed until we must have added
at least a decade onto our lifespans.
  • Not Synced
JF: I think -- we sure
    crossed our legs a lot.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
JF: If you know what I mean.
  • Not Synced
LT: I think we all know what you mean.
  • Not Synced
    PM: You're adding
decades to our lives right now.
  • Not Synced
So among the books that Jane
sent us both to read on female friendship,
  • Not Synced
was one by a woman we admire greatly,
    Sister Joan Chittister,
  • Not Synced
    who said about female friendship
  • Not Synced
    that women friends
are not just a social act,
  • Not Synced
    they're a spiritual act.
  • Not Synced
Do you think of your friends as spiritual?
  • Not Synced
    Do they add something
    spiritual to you life?
  • Not Synced
LT: Spiritual -- I absolutely think that.
  • Not Synced
    Because --especially people
    you've known a long time --
  • Not Synced
    people you've spent time with,
  • Not Synced
I can see the spiritual essence
    inside them,
  • Not Synced
    the tenderness, the vulnerability.
  • Not Synced
There's actually kind of a love,
an element of love in the relationship.
  • Not Synced
I just see deeply into your soul.
  • Not Synced
PM: Do you think that, Jane?
  • Not Synced
LT: But I have special powers.
  • Not Synced
JF: Well there's all kinds of friends.
  • Not Synced
    There's you know, business friends,
    and party friends,
  • Not Synced
I got a lot of those.
  • Not Synced
    But the oxytocin producing friendships,
  • Not Synced
they have -- they feel spiritual
because it's a heart opening, right?
  • Not Synced
    You know, we go deep.
  • Not Synced
And I find that I shed tears a lot
    with my intimate friends.
  • Not Synced
Not because I'm sad but because
I'm so touched and inspired by them.
  • Not Synced
LT: And you know one of you's
    going to go soon.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
PM: Well two of us are sitting here, Lily,
which one are you talking about?
