Sculpting in Blender 4.3: What's New & How to Get Started

  • 0:00 - 0:03
    >> The new sculpting tools in
Blender 4.3 are looking really good.
  • 0:03 - 0:07
So I'm going to quickly take you through
some of the changes with a quick start guide.
  • 0:07 - 0:10
So in Blender 4.3, I've got
    my default cube selected.
  • 0:10 - 0:12
I'm going to go across to
    the sculpting workspace.
  • 0:13 - 0:15
    You can see my screencast
    keys down the corner here.
  • 0:15 - 0:17
    And instantly, you'll see the
    interface has changed slightly
  • 0:17 - 0:21
with our brushes now along the bottom here,
instead of along the left-hand side here.
  • 0:22 - 0:23
    If you're completely new
    to sculpting in Blender,
  • 0:24 - 0:26
you'll find that you won't be
able to sculpt on your cube.
  • 0:26 - 0:29
    That's because it hasn't got
    enough topology or faces.
  • 0:29 - 0:32
Sculpting will only affect the vertices.
  • 0:32 - 0:35
So I can sculpt on this bit here,
and you can see it just about moving.
  • 0:35 - 0:37
We need to add vertices to this.
  • 0:37 - 0:40
The simplest way to do that
    is using the re-mesh option
  • 0:40 - 0:42
at the top here, and that's in the same place.
  • 0:42 - 0:44
    And under this menu, the
two things you need to know
  • 0:44 - 0:47
    about are voxel size and
    the re-mesh button there.
  • 0:47 - 0:49
And both those have keyboard shortcuts.
  • 0:49 - 0:53
If you press R, you'll get the voxel size,
and it's much easier to see it like this.
  • 0:53 - 0:55
You can see the size of the
faces that I'm going to create.
  • 0:55 - 0:59
And I'll go down to something
    like 0.04 and left click.
  • 0:59 - 1:01
So that set the voxel size.
  • 1:01 - 1:04
And you can see up here,
    we're roughly around 0.04.
  • 1:04 - 1:07
    And the re-mesh button, the
shortcut for that is Ctrl R.
  • 1:07 - 1:09
So you can see it's slightly changed there.
  • 1:09 - 1:12
And if I start drawing now,
you can see those faces there.
  • 1:12 - 1:17
So R to set the face or voxel size
and Ctrl R to actually do the re-mesh.
  • 1:17 - 1:19
You've got your radius and strength up here.
  • 1:19 - 1:24
You can change those with F for
radius and Shift F for strength.
  • 1:24 - 1:26
    You've also got your brush
    settings down the side here
  • 1:26 - 1:29
under the active tool and workspace settings.
  • 1:29 - 1:31
    You've also got your symmetry
    options at the top here,
  • 1:31 - 1:34
and you can enable your symmetry
    for symmetrical objects.
  • 1:34 - 1:37
So for anybody new to sculpting,
that is the quick start guide.
  • 1:37 - 1:40
And you can now have a play with the brushes,
which are all listed along the bottom.
  • 1:40 - 1:42
And that, of course, is the big change.
  • 1:42 - 1:46
All your brushes are down the bottom here,
and these brushes are actually assets.
  • 1:46 - 1:50
There's a big advantage to this, and
that's that you can import brushes.
  • 1:50 - 1:52
So if you've seen a wonderful
    brush pack somewhere,
  • 1:52 - 1:54
you can download those and import them.
  • 1:54 - 1:58
And you can create your own and
save them into this asset shelf.
  • 1:58 - 1:59
There are a few new brushes.
  • 1:59 - 2:00
    I won't go over those.
  • 2:00 - 2:01
I'll save that for another video.
  • 2:01 - 2:07
But you can use your scroll wheel to wheel
through the menu here, or you can expand this
  • 2:07 - 2:12
out and make it bigger, and you can change
the size or the display settings just here.
  • 2:12 - 2:14
I think something like 32 works well.
  • 2:14 - 2:18
You can, of course, include the names if you
haven't got an oversized interface like I have.
  • 2:18 - 2:19
So I'll hide those for the moment.
  • 2:19 - 2:22
And you can choose to hide
    or show certain groups.
  • 2:22 - 2:26
So the paint brushes, for example,
    could be here, simulation brushes,
  • 2:26 - 2:28
all those sort of cloth things and so forth.
  • 2:28 - 2:29
    Add and subtract.
  • 2:29 - 2:33
And then the general has the
extra push and pull ones as well.
  • 2:33 - 2:34
I'll keep that on all for now.
  • 2:34 - 2:38
On the very side here, you have
    the actual asset library tools.
  • 2:39 - 2:42
So you can find different brushes
from different libraries and so forth.
  • 2:42 - 2:45
See my video on asset libraries
    for more information on that.
  • 2:45 - 2:48
That's only something you have to worry
about if you're actually importing brushes.
  • 2:48 - 2:51
If you create a new brush for
yourself, you can save it here
  • 2:51 - 2:53
    and it will always appear
    when you open up Blender.
  • 2:53 - 2:54
    So let's do exactly that.
  • 2:54 - 2:58
    Generally speaking, you'll probably always
use the draw brush to create new brushes from.
  • 2:59 - 3:00
    So I'll right-click on that.
  • 3:00 - 3:03
And we've got an option of duplicate asset.
  • 3:03 - 3:04
We can give this a name.
  • 3:04 - 3:05
    I'll call this rock brush.
  • 3:06 - 3:08
And you can see it's going to
save it to my user library.
  • 3:08 - 3:10
    So I can press save.
  • 3:10 - 3:14
And you can see I've now got the draw
brush here and my rock brush here.
  • 3:14 - 3:18
So on this rock brush, if I make some
changes, let's say add a texture to this.
  • 3:18 - 3:20
So under the texture, I'll click new.
  • 3:20 - 3:22
    Unfortunately, we can't change
    the texture in here.
  • 3:22 - 3:26
We have to go to the texture properties
here and then open up an image.
  • 3:26 - 3:28
    So I'll press open here.
  • 3:28 - 3:31
Go across to my brush folder and
choose one of my rock brushes
  • 3:31 - 3:33
    that I've downloaded from somewhere.
  • 3:33 - 3:34
    Let's take rock seven here.
  • 3:34 - 3:35
    Open that up.
  • 3:35 - 3:37
And then I can start drawing with this.
  • 3:37 - 3:39
And you can see it's not doing
a great job at the moment.
  • 3:40 - 3:42
I'd probably want to go back
    to my brush settings.
  • 3:43 - 3:44
And you can see the texture pop in there.
  • 3:45 - 3:46
    I'll minimize that.
  • 3:46 - 3:49
And under the stroke method, I can
change this to something like anchored
  • 3:50 - 3:51
and it comes out with this texture here.
  • 3:51 - 3:53
    However, it's not looking great.
  • 3:53 - 3:58
So I'll add a few more faces by pressing R for
the re-mesh, bringing this down to something
  • 3:58 - 4:02
like 0.01 around there, and CTRL R to re-mesh.
  • 4:02 - 4:03
You can see now, I've got some more detail.
  • 4:04 - 4:05
Let's bring out that rock brush.
  • 4:05 - 4:07
And now, I can paint with
    this lovely rock texture.
  • 4:09 - 4:11
    I can right-click on this.
  • 4:11 - 4:14
I can add it to my quick favorites or
give it a special keyboard shortcut.
  • 4:14 - 4:15
    Let's try that.
  • 4:15 - 4:18
I'll click that, and let's press Q, for example.
  • 4:18 - 4:22
So let's go to a different
brush, like the blob brush here.
  • 4:22 - 4:26
When I press Q, you can see it
selects my rock brush just there.
  • 4:26 - 4:29
    The other great thing is
that I can press file, new.
  • 4:29 - 4:31
And this time, I'll open up a sculpting file.
  • 4:31 - 4:32
I won't save any of the changes.
  • 4:33 - 4:35
And even though I haven't saved any
changes, if I come down to here,
  • 4:35 - 4:37
you can see there's my rock brush.
  • 4:37 - 4:41
And amazingly, it has the texture
still there, and I can click and drag
  • 4:41 - 4:43
to add my rock texture to my sphere.
  • 4:43 - 4:44
    I'll undo that, though.
  • 4:44 - 4:47
Press R, bring my voxels down.
  • 4:47 - 4:49
CTRL R to do the re-mesh.
  • 4:49 - 4:52
    And then let's bring out
    some lovely rocks again.
  • 4:52 - 4:53
    That's amazing, isn't it?
  • 4:53 - 4:57
So hopefully, you can see how this
asset shelf for our brushes is going
  • 4:57 - 5:00
to make things a lot easier within
    Blender's sculpting workspace.
  • 5:00 - 5:04
And keep an eye out on this channel for more
videos about the individual brushes themselves.
  • 5:04 - 5:06
    If you've got any questions,
    then do comment below,

and check the description for any updates.
  • 5:07 - 5:09
Thanks for watching, and I'll see you next time.
