The myth of Oisín and the land of eternal youth - Iseult Gillespie
-
0:08 - 0:10In a typical hero's journey,
-
0:10 - 0:12the protagonist sets out on an adventure,
-
0:12 - 0:13undergoes great change,
-
0:13 - 0:16and returns in triumph
to their point of origin. -
0:16 - 0:18But in the Irish genre of myth
known as Eachtraí, -
0:18 - 0:23the journey to the other world
ends in a point of no return. -
0:23 - 0:26While there are many different versions
of the otherworld in Irish mythology, -
0:26 - 0:30the most well-known example occurs
in the story of Oisín. -
0:30 - 0:33Oisín was the son of Fionn mac Cumhaill,
the leader of a group of pagan warriors -
0:33 - 0:35known as the Fianna.
-
0:35 - 0:37As Oisín rode with his companions one day,
-
0:37 - 0:41he was visited by
the immortal princess Niamh. -
0:41 - 0:43The two fell instantly in love
-
0:43 - 0:45and Niamh put Oisín onto her white horse
-
0:45 - 0:48and rode with him
to the edge of the Irish sea. -
0:48 - 0:52As they made for the horizon,
the riders sunk into a golden haze. -
0:52 - 0:56They came to the shores of
the gleaming kingdom called Tír na nÓg. -
0:56 - 1:00This was the home of the Tuatha Dé Danann,
the people who ruled Ancient Ireland -
1:00 - 1:03long before Oisín's time.
-
1:03 - 1:06From the point of his arrival,
Oisín's every need was met. -
1:06 - 1:10He married Niamh in a grand ceremony
and was welcomed into her family. -
1:10 - 1:14When he wished to hear music,
his ears filled with bewitching tones. -
1:14 - 1:18When he hungered, golden plates
appeared laden with fragrant food. -
1:18 - 1:23He admired scenes of great beauty,
and colors that he had no name for. -
1:23 - 1:28All around him, the land and the people
existed in a state of unmoving perfection. -
1:28 - 1:32But what Oisín didn't know was that
Tír na nÓg was the land of youth, -
1:32 - 1:36in which time stood still
and the people never aged. -
1:36 - 1:40In his new home, Oisín continued
to hunt and explore as he had in Ireland. -
1:40 - 1:44But in the land of youth, he possessed
a strange, new invincibility. -
1:44 - 1:46At the end of each day of adventuring,
-
1:46 - 1:51Oisín's wounds magically healed themselves
as he slept in Niamh's arms. -
1:51 - 1:56Although glory and pleasure
came easily to Oisín in the land of youth, -
1:56 - 2:00he missed the Fianna
and the adventures they had in Ireland. -
2:00 - 2:04After three years in Tír na nÓg, he
was struck by a deep yearning for home. -
2:04 - 2:07Before he embarked on his journey back,
Niamh warned him -
2:07 - 2:11that he must not alight from his horse
to touch the earth with his own feet. -
2:11 - 2:13When Oisín reached the shores of Ireland,
-
2:13 - 2:17it felt as if a shadow
had fallen over the world. -
2:17 - 2:22On the hill where his father's palace lay,
he saw only a ruin strewn with weeds. -
2:22 - 2:25His calls for his friends and family
echoed from derelict walls. -
2:25 - 2:30Horrified, Oisín rode until he came upon
a group of peasants working in the fields. -
2:30 - 2:33They were struggling to remove
a boulder from their land, -
2:33 - 2:35and forgetting Niamh's warning,
-
2:35 - 2:39Oisín leapt from his horse and rolled it
away with his superhuman strength. -
2:39 - 2:42The crowd's cheers soon
turned into shrieks. -
2:42 - 2:46In place of the youth was an old man
whose beard swept the ground -
2:46 - 2:48and whose legs buckled under him.
-
2:48 - 2:50He cried out for Finn and the Fianna,
-
2:50 - 2:56but the people only recognized these names
from the distant past of 300 years before. -
2:56 - 2:58Time had betrayed Oisín
-
2:58 - 3:03and his return to mortal lands
had aged him irreversibly. -
3:03 - 3:04Throughout Irish folklore,
-
3:04 - 3:08sightings of the land of youth
have been reported in the depths of wells, -
3:08 - 3:11on the brink of the horizon,
-
3:11 - 3:13or in the gloom of caves.
-
3:13 - 3:17But those who know the tale of Oisín
tell of another vision, -
3:17 - 3:23that of a shining princess carried upon
the distant waves by a white horse, -
3:23 - 3:26still hoping for the return
of her doomed love.
