Denver Parks & Recreation Improve the Tracking and Distribution of Spring Plants

  • 0:03 - 0:07
we have sixteen greenhouses we grow in
  • 0:07 - 0:09
36,000 square feet of greenhouse we grow
  • 0:09 - 0:12
for this park citywide we also grow for
  • 0:12 - 0:14
the zoo in the Denver Botanic Gardens we
  • 0:14 - 0:16
    have thirty horticulturists that help
  • 0:16 - 0:19
maintain all the 40-plus parks there was
  • 0:19 - 0:22
a lot of talk about the problems that
  • 0:22 - 0:23
were here but there wasn't a lot of how
  • 0:23 - 0:25
are we going to fix these problems and
  • 0:25 - 0:26
how are we going to find those solutions
  • 0:26 - 0:28
in the past it used to be people would
  • 0:28 - 0:30
either be at the garage door and they
  • 0:30 - 0:31
load up plants that way or they would
  • 0:31 - 0:33
actually drive through the hallway and
  • 0:33 - 0:35
go from one end of the greenhouse not
  • 0:35 - 0:37
the other cause so many be like hey can
  • 0:37 - 0:38
I place an order for two o'clock and
  • 0:38 - 0:40
they'd be like let me grab a piece of
  • 0:40 - 0:41
paper or let me run down to the other
  • 0:41 - 0:43
side of the greenhouse you know so it
  • 0:43 - 0:45
was just not organized we really talked
  • 0:45 - 0:47
to all of the parks horticulturists out
  • 0:47 - 0:49
in the districts we communicated a lot
  • 0:49 - 0:51
to figure out where was the breakdown
  • 0:51 - 0:52
happening and then we tried to really
  • 0:52 - 0:55
pinpoint those solutions and start from
  • 0:55 - 0:57
there so if we were disorganized on our
  • 0:57 - 0:58
    end
  • 0:58 - 1:00
it would only slow the process down for
  • 1:00 - 1:03
    them we're always about improving
  • 1:03 - 1:06
    efficiency while we're not selling
  • 1:06 - 1:08
anything the citizens of the City and
  • 1:08 - 1:10
County of Denver are paying for us to do
  • 1:10 - 1:12
what we're doing and ultimately they are
  • 1:12 - 1:15
the customer so when I first took over
  • 1:15 - 1:17
the greenhouse and started using the
  • 1:17 - 1:19
Black Belt techniques and some of the
  • 1:19 - 1:21
processes looking at the a3 you know the
  • 1:21 - 1:22
biggest thing there was what's the
  • 1:22 - 1:24
current state and and where would we
  • 1:24 - 1:26
want to go so the current state for the
  • 1:26 - 1:28
green house at that time was a lot of
  • 1:28 - 1:30
chaos and also a lot of frustration for
  • 1:30 - 1:32
people what we did was we started using
  • 1:32 - 1:35
all of our doors and the way we are able
  • 1:35 - 1:36
to do that is that we actually pull the
  • 1:36 - 1:38
orders for them ahead of time and we
  • 1:38 - 1:39
placed them at the back of the
  • 1:39 - 1:42
greenhouses towards the doors and now
  • 1:42 - 1:44
we're loading people from 14 doors
  • 1:44 - 1:46
rather than two and they're also their
  • 1:46 - 1:48
materials ready when they get here some
  • 1:48 - 1:49
people would be on the north some people
  • 1:49 - 1:50
can be on the south and they can get
  • 1:50 - 1:53
their plants get loaded and get going to
  • 1:53 - 1:56
go plant the bed we have an online kind
  • 1:56 - 1:58
of ordering system so to speak like we
  • 1:58 - 2:01
send an email basically that has the
  • 2:01 - 2:03
beds that we're picking up and what's in
  • 2:03 - 2:05
them and then we send that to them as an
  • 2:05 - 2:07
excel sheet and then they're able to
  • 2:07 - 2:09
pull the orders that way you can pick
  • 2:09 - 2:12
your date and your hour that you're
  • 2:12 - 2:13
picking up and you can pick your bed
  • 2:13 - 2:15
number there so for us you know much
  • 2:15 - 2:17
room for error we can just drop it right
  • 2:17 - 2:19
into the spreadsheet and then we can
  • 2:19 - 2:21
actually sort and find what we're doing
  • 2:21 - 2:23
for each day so good organization is key
  • 2:23 - 2:25
from the very beginning all the way
  • 2:25 - 2:27
through we see that there's a problem we
  • 2:27 - 2:29
talk about it we communicate together as
  • 2:29 - 2:31
a team hey we see this it's a problem
  • 2:31 - 2:33
and then we figure out a way to make it
  • 2:33 - 2:33
    right
  • 2:33 - 2:35
if it wasn't what it is now I can't
  • 2:35 - 2:38
imagine how we would operate our fellow
  • 2:38 - 2:40
co-workers come in and are always very
  • 2:40 - 2:42
pleased with the system and are like you
  • 2:42 - 2:44
guys are so well organized and we
  • 2:44 - 2:46
appreciate it we appreciate the plants
  • 2:46 - 2:49
and it just goes and flows really well
  • 2:49 - 2:50
it's really cool it makes it all
  • 2:50 - 2:52
worthwhile in my mind that's what it's
  • 2:52 - 2:56
for for other people to enjoy
  • 3:02 - 3:04
    you
