The difference between healthy and unhealthy love

  • Not Synced
So when you think about a child,
a close friend, or a romantic partner,
  • Not Synced
the word "love" probably comes to mind,
  • Not Synced
and instantly other emotions rush in:
  • Not Synced
    joy and hope,
  • Not Synced
    excitement, trust and security,
  • Not Synced
    and yes, sometimes
    sadness and disappointment.
  • Not Synced
    There might not be
    a word in the dictionary
  • Not Synced
    that more of us
    are connected to than love.
  • Not Synced
    Yet, given its central
    importance in our lives,
  • Not Synced
isn't it interesting that we're never
    explicitly taught how to love?
  • Not Synced
    We build friendships,
  • Not Synced
    navigate early romantic relationships,
  • Not Synced
    get married and bring babies
    home from the hospital
  • Not Synced
    with the expectation
    that we'll figure it out.
  • Not Synced
But the truth is, we often harm
and disrespect the ones we love.
  • Not Synced
    It can be subtle things
    like guilting a friend
  • Not Synced
    into spending time with you
  • Not Synced
    or sneaking a peak
    at your partner's texts
  • Not Synced
    or shaming a child
for their lack of effort at school.
  • Not Synced
100 percent of us will be
    on the receiving end
  • Not Synced
    of unhealthy relationship behaviors,
  • Not Synced
    and 100 percent of us
    will do unhealthy things.
  • Not Synced
    It's part of being human.
  • Not Synced
In its worst form, the harm
    we inflict on loved ones
  • Not Synced
shows up as abuse and violence,
  • Not Synced
    and relationship abuse
  • Not Synced
is something that one in three women
    and one in four men
  • Not Synced
    will experience in their lifetime.
  • Not Synced
Now, if you're like most people,
    when you hear those stats,
  • Not Synced
you'll go, oh, no no no,
that would never happen to me.
  • Not Synced
    It's instinctual to move away
from the words "abuse" and "violence,"
  • Not Synced
    to think that they happen
    to someone else somewhere else.
  • Not Synced
But the truth is, unhealthy relationships
and abuse are all around us.
  • Not Synced
We just call them different things
    and ignore the connection.
  • Not Synced
    Abuse sneaks up on us
    disguised in unhealthy love.
  • Not Synced
I work for an organization called One Love
  • Not Synced
started by a family whose daughter
Yeardley was killed by her ex-boyfriend.
  • Not Synced
This was a tragedy no one saw coming,
  • Not Synced
    but when they looked back,
  • Not Synced
they realized the warning signs were there
  • Not Synced
    just no one understood
    what they were seeing.
  • Not Synced
    Called crazy or drama
    or too much drinking,
  • Not Synced
    his actions weren't understood
to be what they really were,
  • Not Synced
which was clear signs of danger.
  • Not Synced
Her family realized that if anyone
had been educated about these signs,
  • Not Synced
her death could have been prevented.
  • Not Synced
So today we're on a mission
    to make sure that others
  • Not Synced
    have the information
that Yeardley and her friends didn't.
  • Not Synced
    We have three main goals:
  • Not Synced
give all of us a language
    for talking about a subject
  • Not Synced
    that's quite awkward
    and uncomfortable to discuss;
  • Not Synced
    empower a whole frontline,
    namely friends, to help;
  • Not Synced
    and, in the process, improve
all of our ability to love better.
  • Not Synced
To do this, it's always important
    to start by illuminating
  • Not Synced
    the unhealthy signs
    that we frequently miss,
  • Not Synced
    and our work really focuses
    on creating content
  • Not Synced
to start conversations with young people.
  • Not Synced
As you'd expect, most of our content is
pretty serious, given the subject at hand,
  • Not Synced
but today I'm going to use
    one of our more light-hearted
  • Not Synced
    yet still thought-provoking pieces,
  • Not Synced
    the Couplets,
