  • Not Synced
    Hello, and welcome to EduKatedSTEM.
  • Not Synced
I am Kate, the founder of EduKatedSTEM,
  • Not Synced
and today we're going to be talking
  • Not Synced
    about networking, So sometimes you
  • Not Synced
might be qualified for the role. You might
  • Not Synced
apply for the role, but you don't even
  • Not Synced
get interviewed. And maybe if you had
  • Not Synced
utilized your network or had built a network,
  • Not Synced
you would have a completely different
  • Not Synced
outcome. So, this is one of the reasons
  • Not Synced
why I'm going to encourage you to develop,
  • Not Synced
build a network, and then nurture it so
  • Not Synced
that when you are ready to move on,
  • Not Synced
you can work with your network. Let
  • Not Synced
them know that you are looking for
  • Not Synced
    another opportunity, And maybe you
  • Not Synced
can utilize them to get informational
  • Not Synced
interviews or other things. But the first
  • Not Synced
thing is, you need to network. Now, when
  • Not Synced
I mentioned that word did a chill, go
  • Not Synced
down your spine? I've had a lot of
  • Not Synced
    conversations with individuals who
  • Not Synced
think networking has kind of a horrible
  • Not Synced
connotation. It's slimy. It is kind of
  • Not Synced
using people you know to get your
  • Not Synced
own way or for your own benefit.
  • Not Synced
But it goes both ways, right? So,
  • Not Synced
they're in your network. You could
  • Not Synced
    potentially help them. They might
  • Not Synced
be looking for that as well. And
  • Not Synced
you're going to be building a network
  • Not Synced
of friends and colleagues. So, these
  • Not Synced
are going to be people that you want
  • Not Synced
to be connected with. You're not
  • Not Synced
going to be, hopefully meeting someone
  • Not Synced
that you don't want to be talking
  • Not Synced
to in the future, because that is going
  • Not Synced
to be uncomfortable for you. So, let's
  • Not Synced
talk about maybe networking at a
  • Not Synced
    conference because, as a scientist,
  • Not Synced
this is what you're going to be doing.
  • Not Synced
Hopefully you're going to go to a
  • Not Synced
    conference you're going to listen
  • Not Synced
    to presentations. You're going to
  • Not Synced
    learn new information. You might
  • Not Synced
present a poster, you might present
  • Not Synced
    an oral presentation. And then
  • Not Synced
hopefully you're going to talk with
  • Not Synced
    your peers, maybe meeting new
  • Not Synced
    people. Maybe figuring out who
  • Not Synced
you might want to be working for
  • Not Synced
or with in the future. So, networking
  • Not Synced
isn't a bad thing, But I'm going to
  • Not Synced
encourage you to go in with plan.
  • Not Synced
And I've seen a number of networking
  • Not Synced
talks. At ABRCMS I saw a talk
  • Not Synced
    specifically for networking for introverts,
  • Not Synced
which was very, very good, but I
  • Not Synced
thought a lot of the information
  • Not Synced
was also quite pertinent to people
  • Not Synced
who were not introverts. So I'm an
  • Not Synced
introvert. I find the concept of going
  • Not Synced
to conferences and going to networking
  • Not Synced
events. It's challenging. It really is.
  • Not Synced
But I force myself to do it because
  • Not Synced
you know, the more you do it, the
  • Not Synced
easier it becomes. And I take advice
  • Not Synced
from my friend Mary Mitchell and
  • Not Synced
she always said, when you go, just
  • Not Synced
have a goal in mind. So, if your goal
  • Not Synced
is to meet a certain person, then
  • Not Synced
that is what you try and do. If it's
  • Not Synced
to meet a certain number of people,
  • Not Synced
then you know three to five individuals
  • Not Synced
in and to have a good conversation
  • Not Synced
with them, then that is what you do.
  • Not Synced
Once you have met your your goal,
  • Not Synced
your requirement, it's then up to you
  • Not Synced
if you then choose to leave the
  • Not Synced
    networking event. But hopefully
  • Not Synced
by that point, you will feel comfortable.
  • Not Synced
    You've made some friends. You
  • Not Synced
might actually want to stay. When
  • Not Synced
    you're going to a conference,
  • Not Synced
especially nowadays, a lot of the
  • Not Synced
time you will get information on a
  • Not Synced
    conference app. so ABRCMS
  • Not Synced
    definitely does that. The National
  • Not Synced
    Postdoc Association does that.
  • Not Synced
And they actually use the same app.
  • Not Synced
I might completely kill the pronunciation
  • Not Synced
Whova, I'm not sure but it's a good
  • Not Synced
little app. It has a list of all of the
  • Not Synced
    attendees. It has the presentations,
  • Not Synced
where they are, what the talks are.
  • Not Synced
You can go on and you can highlight.
  • Not Synced
Yes, I want to go to these presentations,
  • Not Synced
and then you have an itinerary,
  • Not Synced
and then the app can say, you know,
  • Not Synced
you've got to talk in 10 minutes in this
  • Not Synced
place, so it's very, very helpful. But
  • Not Synced
you can utilize the app to kind of
  • Not Synced
come up with a plan for what you
  • Not Synced
want to do for networking. So, maybe
  • Not Synced
there is someone in your field that
  • Not Synced
you are absolutely dying to meet.
  • Not Synced
Are they on the list of attendees?
  • Not Synced
If they are, are they speaking? If
  • Not Synced
    they're speaking you absolutely
  • Not Synced
know where they're going to be
  • Not Synced
at one point of time. So you could
  • Not Synced
try and go and speak to them after
  • Not Synced
they have finished. Or maybe you
  • Not Synced
just know that they're going to be
  • Not Synced
there so, maybe you try and have
  • Not Synced
a conversation in a more relaxed
  • Not Synced
setting. So, maybe over a coffee,
  • Not Synced
or you see them at a lunch table,
  • Not Synced
and you ask if you can join them.
  • Not Synced
Whatever it is, if there are certain
  • Not Synced
people that you want to meet,
  • Not Synced
then let's try and make that happen.
  • Not Synced
Why do you want to meet them?
  • Not Synced
Maybe you want to potentially work
  • Not Synced
with them in the future. You just
  • Not Synced
want to have a chat about an
  • Not Synced
experiment or a paper that they've done.
  • Not Synced
Whatever it is. So let's focus on
  • Not Synced
what we want to get out of that.
  • Not Synced
And maybe there are other people
  • Not Synced
there who would be helpful, someone
  • Not Synced
who works at an institution that
  • Not Synced
you're interested in working at, but
  • Not Synced
    not necessarily that individual.
  • Not Synced
You can have a conversation with
  • Not Synced
them and find out is it a great place
  • Not Synced
to work? Maybe you'll have a
  • Not Synced
chat to them and go. Oh, I don't
  • Not Synced
want to do that. I don't want to move
  • Not Synced
on. So look at the conference
  • Not Synced
attendees and see who you might
  • Not Synced
be interested in working for or talking
  • Not Synced
to. And the next thing is be prepared.
  • Not Synced
So, as a graduate student, you might
  • Not Synced
not have the opportunity to have
  • Not Synced
graduate sorry, to have business cards.
  • Not Synced
    But maybe your graduate school
  • Not Synced
will purchase them for you. We used
  • Not Synced
to make them for our graduate students.
  • Not Synced
So that was a possibility. If not
  • Not Synced
    Vistaprint or something very similar,
  • Not Synced
will make you cards for actually quite
  • Not Synced
cheap. So, I designed my business
  • Not Synced
card on Vistaprint. I think I got a
  • Not Synced
thousand of them for $25 or
  • Not Synced
    something. It's really not that
  • Not Synced
expensive, and you can, you know,
  • Not Synced
put your name, an email address,
  • Not Synced
I don't put my phone number
  • Not Synced
    because I don't want people
  • Not Synced
    phoning me at random times.
  • Not Synced
And if you've got a website, then
  • Not Synced
    put that information on there.
  • Not Synced
You could always, if you get a
  • Not Synced
    obviously a smaller number of
  • Not Synced
them, you could say where you
  • Not Synced
currently are, that you're a graduate
  • Not Synced
student or a postdoc, you can
  • Not Synced
    always personalize it even more
  • Not Synced
and say, you know, this is your field.
  • Not Synced
I'm looking for jobs or whatever it is.
  • Not Synced
You can pop it in there. So even
  • Not Synced
if your institution won't give you
  • Not Synced
a business card, then maybe you
  • Not Synced
can kind of get some made. You
  • Not Synced
might want to take a few copies
  • Not Synced
of your CV or resume with you.
  • Not Synced
You know if you have a particular
  • Not Synced
person that you want to meet
  • Not Synced
and you want to share your work
  • Not Synced
with them, you could always print
  • Not Synced
a copy of a paper or an abstract
  • Not Synced
or something and attempt to give
  • Not Synced
it to them. I will say that people
  • Not Synced
have tried to give me CV's, resumes,
  • Not Synced
papers in the past, and I'm gonna
  • Not Synced
be honest. You get home, and
  • Not Synced
you don't really do much with
  • Not Synced
    them. Business cards, yes,
  • Not Synced
know, I have a big stack of them.
  • Not Synced
    Then it's really funny because
  • Not Synced
somebody will email and be like,
  • Not Synced
Kate I met you at this conference.
  • Not Synced
We spoke, and if I can't remember
  • Not Synced
them, then I'll go through my
  • Not Synced
stack of business cards. I'm like,
  • Not Synced
did I meet you? Because if I know
  • Not Synced
that I've met you, then you know
  • Not Synced
    my response is probably gonna
  • Not Synced
be more helpful. Or like, if you see
  • Not Synced
me speak and you say, Kate, I saw
  • Not Synced
your seminar on this, rather than
  • Not Synced
Kate, I want this from you. Then
  • Not Synced
obviously, I'm going to be more
  • Not Synced
helpful to the person who you
  • Not Synced
know opens up with I saw you
  • Not Synced
at this thing and I would like your
  • Not Synced
advice. So I don't know about
  • Not Synced
giving things other than a business
  • Not Synced
card. But you want their business card. If they can give you a business card that's really helpful, because then you can find them on LinkedIn. You can send them an email. And even if it's just you know it was wonderful to meet you at this meeting, I would love to stay in touch. Or if there's a question or something that you can kind of talk about following your conversation. Kind of move it on. And that's always really helpful to kind of get them into your network. Obviously, if they're at a conference and you email them that night or something, then it might take a few days for them to respond because they're really conference,
