Day 1 - How to do Self Inquiry - The Dyad Process (Tell me Who you Are)
-
0:10 - 0:13The self-inquiry intensives at
the samadhi center -
0:13 - 0:16are a rigorous form of Sadhana
-
0:16 - 0:17or spiritual practice
-
0:17 - 0:20designed to create conditions
of ‘no escape’ -
0:20 - 0:23for the egoic mind to bring about
-
0:23 - 0:26the possibility of Samadhi and Awakening
-
0:26 - 0:28to your true nature.
-
0:36 - 0:38Self-inquiry can be done individually
-
0:38 - 0:41and when it's done on your own
-
0:41 - 0:43it's meditation
-
0:44 - 0:46self-inquiry can be done with a partner
-
0:46 - 0:49in what we call dyads
-
0:49 - 0:52or it can be done with a group where
-
0:52 - 0:54the entire group is focused on one person
-
0:54 - 0:57who is doing the inquiry.
-
0:57 - 0:59the main technique used during the
-
0:59 - 1:03self-inquiry retreat is the dyad
-
1:03 - 1:06The Retreat format involves working from
-
1:06 - 1:11early morning 6 a.m until 11 pm at night
-
1:11 - 1:13the participants are encouraged to enter
-
1:13 - 1:16into a period of continuous practice
-
1:16 - 1:20continuously inquiring into Who We Are
-
1:20 - 1:24for this period of time all distractions
-
1:24 - 1:25are set aside
-
1:25 - 1:29there are no devices phones books or
-
1:29 - 1:32anything to engage the conditioned mind
-
1:32 - 1:35during the break periods or while eating
-
1:35 - 1:37one continues to inquire
-
1:37 - 1:40this continuous practice creates a
-
1:40 - 1:43strong inner pressure or inner energy
-
1:43 - 1:46is diverted from the old condition
-
1:46 - 1:50patterns and starts to build
-
1:51 - 1:54sort of alchemy starts to happen
-
1:54 - 1:57Awakening is an energetic event there is
-
1:57 - 2:00a flip from the conditioned eye
-
2:00 - 2:03sense that you are in this character
-
2:03 - 2:07to the true self to the unlimited eye
-
2:07 - 2:09the self-inquiry Intensive is the most
-
2:09 - 2:12direct way to bring about Awakening that
-
2:12 - 2:14I know of
-
2:14 - 2:18by Awakening I mean realizing the true
-
2:18 - 2:21self Beyond name and form
-
2:21 - 2:24it's called kensho in Zan the word
-
2:24 - 2:28kensho means seeing Essence in Mahayana
-
2:28 - 2:31Buddhism it is prajna paramita the
-
2:31 - 2:34highest wisdom the absolute wisdom of
-
2:34 - 2:36our true nature
-
2:36 - 2:39in Western Traditions the terms gnosis
-
2:39 - 2:42or apophaticism refer to the realization
-
2:42 - 2:46of our true or divine nature
-
2:46 - 2:48for this period of time we turn
-
2:48 - 2:50attention away from thoughts and
-
2:50 - 2:52Sensations
-
2:52 - 2:54away from the outer world of form
-
2:54 - 2:59towards the self continuously
-
2:59 - 3:01if we do this practice continuously
-
3:01 - 3:04eventually we will awaken from
-
3:04 - 3:07identification with the false self to
-
3:07 - 3:09our true nature
-
3:09 - 3:12it's extremely simple but it's not easy
-
3:12 - 3:16because the ego construct which is made
-
3:16 - 3:19up of samskaras or condition patterns
-
3:19 - 3:22will generate hindrances just as it does
-
3:22 - 3:25in meditation the whirlpool of the Mind
-
3:25 - 3:28May generate thoughts
-
3:28 - 3:31we may experience egoic preferences
-
3:31 - 3:34the Mind May focus on Comfort or
-
3:34 - 3:35discomfort
-
3:35 - 3:37it may become tired
-
3:37 - 3:41it may get confused or disoriented
-
3:41 - 3:43they may find the whole process
-
3:43 - 3:46intolerable and want to give up
-
3:46 - 3:49it has to give up
-
3:49 - 3:52the conditioned eye may think it is
-
3:52 - 3:55already awake we have to Humble the
-
3:55 - 3:57conditioned mind
-
3:57 - 3:59it is said that one must want to awaken
-
3:59 - 4:02like a person with their hair on fire
-
4:02 - 4:05Once Upon to jump into
-
4:05 - 4:08we must proceed with a beginner's mind a
-
4:08 - 4:12not knowing mind a humble mind
-
4:12 - 4:16a mind that is open mirror-like
-
4:16 - 4:18alive
-
4:18 - 4:21for this process we enter into The Cloud
-
4:21 - 4:25of Unknowing we let go of control and
-
4:25 - 4:27connect to a sense of curiosity and
-
4:27 - 4:30investigation
-
4:30 - 4:33during this process one remains
-
4:33 - 4:36equanimous with whatever comes up within
-
4:36 - 4:39the mind and senses having a complete
-
4:39 - 4:42experience of everything arising in the
-
4:42 - 4:43present moment
-
4:43 - 4:47we observe everything that is arising
-
4:47 - 4:50not pushing anything away and yet not
-
4:50 - 4:52getting identified with anything
-
4:52 - 4:56we come to the true self by realizing
-
4:56 - 4:58all that we are not
-
4:58 - 5:01we make the unconscious patterns that
-
5:01 - 5:03are in play Within the self-structure
-
5:03 - 5:05conscious
-
5:05 - 5:08when we inquire into who we are first
-
5:08 - 5:11everything that is the false self will
-
5:11 - 5:13come to the Forefront
-
5:13 - 5:17all of our thoughts and blocks repressed
-
5:17 - 5:20emotions imprints and samskaras that are
-
5:20 - 5:23part of the self-structure will start to
-
5:23 - 5:26come to the surface
-
5:26 - 5:28by not reacting
-
5:28 - 5:31by having a complete experience of
-
5:31 - 5:34purification starts to happen within the
-
5:34 - 5:36self-structure
-
5:36 - 5:39this practice that leads to samadhi is
-
5:39 - 5:42cultivating single pointed Focus
-
5:42 - 5:45you become continuously present
-
5:45 - 5:47observing what is
-
5:47 - 5:51allowing what is always becoming aware
-
5:51 - 5:54of subtler and subtler aspects of what
-
5:54 - 5:58is gaining sensory clarity
-
5:58 - 6:01allowing the mind to be open
-
6:01 - 6:05responsive without analyzing
-
6:06 - 6:08when self-inquiry is done with a partner
-
6:08 - 6:11it can be particularly potent
-
6:11 - 6:15one can't drift off into the mind you're
-
6:15 - 6:18accountable it's like meditating with a
-
6:18 - 6:21partner you have to be present because
-
6:21 - 6:24you're being witnessed you're staring
-
6:24 - 6:27into someone else's eyes
-
6:27 - 6:30wander away
-
6:30 - 6:32at these Retreats We Begin the
-
6:32 - 6:34self-inquiry when we're in the waking
-
6:34 - 6:35state
-
6:35 - 6:37the practice can carry over into
-
6:37 - 6:41dreaming and even deep sleep States
-
6:41 - 6:44[Music]
-
6:44 - 6:46here I'm going to describe the dyad
-
6:46 - 6:48technique
-
6:48 - 6:51in this practice one person is witness
-
6:51 - 6:54and the other engages in deep inner
-
6:54 - 6:56investigation
-
6:56 - 6:59acquiring into their true nature
-
6:59 - 7:02first decide who will be the witness and
-
7:02 - 7:06who will start doing inquiry
-
7:06 - 7:09you will switch roles back and forth all
-
7:09 - 7:11day long
-
7:11 - 7:13if you're doing this with a large group
-
7:13 - 7:16you will switch Partners roughly every
-
7:16 - 7:1840 minutes
-
7:18 - 7:21sit across from your partner looking
-
7:21 - 7:23into their eyes
-
7:23 - 7:27maintain eye contact and silence
-
7:28 - 7:31as an introductory exercise just look
-
7:31 - 7:34into each other's eyes for about three
-
7:34 - 7:36or four minutes
-
7:37 - 7:40allow yourself to see this being across
-
7:40 - 7:41from you
-
7:41 - 7:45allow yourself to be seen
-
7:45 - 7:47the witness will connect to their
-
7:47 - 7:51intention to know who this being is
-
7:51 - 7:53that is in front of them
-
7:53 - 7:57the witness will say to their partner
-
7:57 - 8:00tell me who you are
-
8:00 - 8:03the imperative should come from a place
-
8:03 - 8:06of sincere wanting to know
-
8:06 - 8:09for the one doing the inquiry simply
-
8:09 - 8:12allow yourself to be open
-
8:12 - 8:15to receive the imperative
-
8:15 - 8:18inquire into Who You Are
-
8:18 - 8:19earnestly
-
8:19 - 8:23sincerely penetratingly
-
8:23 - 8:26notice how the imperative lands within
-
8:26 - 8:29the self-structure
-
8:29 - 8:31there may be an Impulse to close the
-
8:31 - 8:35eyes or the eyes may remain open
-
8:35 - 8:37simply let it land in the deepest part
-
8:37 - 8:39of your being
-
8:39 - 8:42take a moment or several moments to
-
8:42 - 8:45observe the Mind Body
-
8:45 - 8:49the energy any phenomena that arises
-
8:49 - 8:52within the self-structure
-
8:52 - 8:56then simply convey to your partner what
-
8:56 - 8:58has arisen as a result of doing this
-
8:58 - 9:01inquiry
-
9:01 - 9:05what's coming up in the present moment
-
9:05 - 9:08what's the most real thing happening in
-
9:08 - 9:09this moment
-
9:09 - 9:12[Music]
-
9:12 - 9:14there are thoughts or doubts
-
9:14 - 9:16or if there's a feeling that nothing is
-
9:16 - 9:19happening just observe the most real
-
9:19 - 9:22thing about this moment
-
9:22 - 9:24connect with your I am-ness
-
9:24 - 9:25[Music]
-
9:25 - 9:28inquire into Who You Are by being aware
-
9:28 - 9:33of this I am-ness the sense of existence
-
9:33 - 9:35don't think that there is a right or
-
9:35 - 9:37wrong answer
-
9:37 - 9:40we're not looking for an answer on the
-
9:40 - 9:42level of the mind don't think that you
-
9:42 - 9:45have to please someone with your answer
-
9:45 - 9:48be free playful
-
9:48 - 9:51you don't have to search for an answer
-
9:51 - 9:55be free in the not knowing
-
9:55 - 9:58a Bible passage comes to mind unless you
-
9:58 - 10:01become like little children you will
-
10:01 - 10:04never enter the Kingdom of Heaven Jesus
-
10:04 - 10:05said
-
10:05 - 10:08there was a sense of I that you had when
-
10:08 - 10:12you were a little kid the sense of you
-
10:12 - 10:14the unconditioned you
-
10:14 - 10:17it was there when you were a teenager
-
10:17 - 10:21it's there at every point in one's life
-
10:21 - 10:24feel that sense of eye right now
-
10:24 - 10:28that sense of I am
-
10:29 - 10:32what is that sense of I am
-
10:32 - 10:34it has no quality
-
10:34 - 10:37it doesn't change
-
10:37 - 10:40the body changes the Mind changes
-
10:40 - 10:44the phenomena of Life Changes
-
10:44 - 10:48Sensations change but that sense of I am
-
10:48 - 10:50does not change
-
10:50 - 10:53it has no location
-
10:53 - 10:55tell me who you are
-
10:55 - 11:00it is not a question it is an imperative
-
11:00 - 11:04one trap people fall into is that they
-
11:04 - 11:07mistake it for a question
-
11:07 - 11:10it is not about getting the right answer
-
11:10 - 11:12with words
-
11:12 - 11:16it's about knowing who is answering
-
11:16 - 11:18who is responding
-
11:18 - 11:21the practice is to report any phenomena
-
11:21 - 11:24that arises within the self-structure to
-
11:24 - 11:26your partner
-
11:26 - 11:29explaining as clearly and as truthfully
-
11:29 - 11:32as you can
-
11:32 - 11:35there are some rules to this game
-
11:35 - 11:36[Music]
-
11:36 - 11:40don't refer to your partner as you and
-
11:40 - 11:41don't refer to anything that your
-
11:41 - 11:44partner may have said in a previous diet
-
11:44 - 11:48this is not a conversation in this
-
11:48 - 11:51practice we also eliminate words like I
-
11:51 - 11:54mine or myself
-
11:54 - 11:58when we use the word I we habitually
-
11:58 - 12:00refer to the false eye the condition
-
12:00 - 12:03itself so we want to communicate
-
12:03 - 12:06whatever comes up without using this
-
12:06 - 12:09dualistic language
-
12:09 - 12:12if you know that you are referring to
-
12:12 - 12:15the false eye then don't use the word i
-
12:15 - 12:19instead of saying I am feeling tired or
-
12:19 - 12:21I am feeling angry say there is a
-
12:21 - 12:24feeling of tiredness arising
-
12:24 - 12:27or there is a sense of anger within the
-
12:27 - 12:30self-structure
-
12:30 - 12:34is it true that I am tired
-
12:34 - 12:38is it the body that is tired
-
12:38 - 12:43am I the body or am I aware of the body
-
12:46 - 12:48I can start with what is obvious but
-
12:48 - 12:50don't miss the subtle
-
12:50 - 12:52go into the feeling
-
12:52 - 12:56sensory layer the somatic field
-
12:56 - 12:59if a feeling comes up where does it live
-
12:59 - 13:02in the body how does it move how does it
-
13:02 - 13:05change Through Time
-
13:05 - 13:08if there's sadness or anger what do
-
13:08 - 13:11those feel like notice any energetic
-
13:11 - 13:15contraction any holding or resistance
-
13:15 - 13:18within the body having a complete
-
13:18 - 13:21experience of everything arising in the
-
13:21 - 13:22present moment
-
13:22 - 13:26during this process the witness holds
-
13:26 - 13:28the container of Silence
-
13:28 - 13:31witnessing without reaction
-
13:31 - 13:34without encouragement the witness
-
13:34 - 13:37maintains a neutral face and lets go of
-
13:37 - 13:39any body language
-
13:39 - 13:43when witnessing you disappear
-
13:43 - 13:45there's only your partner
-
13:45 - 13:48make sure that you're understanding your
-
13:48 - 13:49partner
-
13:49 - 13:51following what is being said
-
13:51 - 13:54don't zone out or stare through your
-
13:54 - 13:56partner
-
13:56 - 13:57something is said that you don't
-
13:57 - 14:02understand you can say clarify that
-
14:02 - 14:04this is the only thing the witness can
-
14:04 - 14:05say
-
14:05 - 14:08as a witness you may be feeling what the
-
14:08 - 14:11other person is feeling
-
14:12 - 14:17you may even sink breaths and movements
-
14:17 - 14:20this happens spontaneously you don't
-
14:20 - 14:23have to try to do anything
-
14:23 - 14:25possible for the witness to enter a
-
14:25 - 14:27samadhi state where there's no
-
14:27 - 14:30separation from the one being witnessed
-
14:30 - 14:33don't sympathize with the partner don't
-
14:33 - 14:37play into their drama be totally neutral
-
14:37 - 14:41this neutrality allows the freedom of
-
14:41 - 14:45expression to unfold you are a mirror a
-
14:45 - 14:48mirror has no opinion judgment or
-
14:48 - 14:50preference
-
14:50 - 14:54at The Retreat the facilitators will
-
14:54 - 14:57come around and use various tools and
-
14:57 - 14:59their own intuition to point
-
14:59 - 15:01participants beyond their conditioned
-
15:01 - 15:04Minds towards a direct experience of
-
15:04 - 15:07their true nature
-
15:07 - 15:09the dyad facilitator may come and
-
15:09 - 15:13observe and may ask you questions if
-
15:13 - 15:15this happens stay connected with your
-
15:15 - 15:17partner's eyes
-
15:17 - 15:20don't turn and look at the facilitator
-
15:20 - 15:24simply answer the question but stay
-
15:24 - 15:27connected to your partner
-
15:27 - 15:29[Music]
-
15:29 - 15:32stay awake in the not knowing
-
15:32 - 15:36primordial awareness is inseparable from
-
15:36 - 15:39Stillness and presence
-
15:39 - 15:43it is a Stillness and presence beyond
-
15:43 - 15:45the movement and Stillness of The
-
15:45 - 15:47Limited mind
-
15:47 - 15:49it is closer than the you that you think
-
15:49 - 15:52you are
-
15:52 - 15:55[Music]
-
15:55 - 15:58it is neither near nor far
-
15:58 - 16:02these are mere Concepts
-
16:05 - 16:07don't try to manufacture some answer
-
16:07 - 16:11with the mind or philosophize about who
-
16:11 - 16:13you are let the thoughts and experiences
-
16:13 - 16:17come up observe them and report them but
-
16:17 - 16:21don't get caught in their content
-
16:21 - 16:23we want to objectively report what is
-
16:23 - 16:28coming up within the self-structure
-
16:28 - 16:31we want to express freely in an
-
16:31 - 16:34inhibited spontaneous way
-
16:34 - 16:38don't overthink it
-
16:38 - 16:42this process is incredibly simple
-
16:44 - 16:46you don't have to do anything other than
-
16:46 - 16:50Observe and Report
-
16:50 - 16:53it is the condition mine responding
-
16:53 - 16:56trying to answer
-
16:56 - 16:58who are you
-
16:58 - 17:02there is nothing to attain there is only
-
17:02 - 17:04the dropping of the false identification
-
17:04 - 17:10and realizing the truth of the true eye
-
17:11 - 17:14primordial awareness is so simple and
-
17:14 - 17:19obvious that the Mind misses it
-
17:19 - 17:22it is always the conditioned mind that
-
17:22 - 17:22looks
-
17:22 - 17:25that moves
-
17:25 - 17:27the conditioned mind is nothing but
-
17:27 - 17:31movement looking here and there
-
17:32 - 17:35if you give up that movement then what
-
17:35 - 17:36remains
-
