What are common scams I should be aware of?

  • 0:06 - 0:07
    - So Grace, you know,
  • 0:07 - 0:09
and I'm asking both to protect all of us
  • 0:09 - 0:14
but also I have a strange
    fascination of, of exotic scams.
  • 0:14 - 0:15
    What, what are the types
    of scams that you've seen?
  • 0:15 - 0:19
    How, how elaborate have,
    have these things become?
  • 0:19 - 0:21
    - Yeah, so unfortunately the attackers
  • 0:21 - 0:22
    are getting more creative.
  • 0:22 - 0:24
Now, the good news is that
  • 0:24 - 0:27
    most major, you know,
    email platforms for example
  • 0:27 - 0:30
    are automatically blocking
    all kinds of spam that,
  • 0:30 - 0:34
or scams and spam that you
never see on a regular basis.
  • 0:34 - 0:37
For example, during the Covid Pandemic,
  • 0:37 - 0:40
    Google blocked 18 million
    Covid impersonation
  • 0:40 - 0:42
    emails per day.
  • 0:42 - 0:44
And that is something that never made it
  • 0:44 - 0:45
    to people's inboxes.
  • 0:45 - 0:48
    - What is a Covid impersonation email?
  • 0:48 - 0:51
    - So unfortunately, one
    thing to look out for
  • 0:51 - 0:54
with these scams is folks impersonating
  • 0:54 - 0:56
    what you might think
    of as a trusted source.
  • 0:56 - 1:00
So maybe a hospital or health organization
  • 1:00 - 1:03
    reaching out with Covid information,
  • 1:03 - 1:06
kind of trying to beat people
    in with something timely.
  • 1:06 - 1:08
So we do really recommend that folks
  • 1:08 - 1:12
    go directly to the trusted
    website of that organization
  • 1:12 - 1:15
as opposed to clicking into a link
  • 1:15 - 1:17
that may look a little bit suspicious
  • 1:17 - 1:19
    or may not be something
    they were expected to hear.
  • 1:19 - 1:24
    Another flag is if a
email or a call or a text
  • 1:25 - 1:26
is really trying to rush you
  • 1:26 - 1:28
    into providing personal information,
  • 1:28 - 1:30
such as your bank account information,
  • 1:30 - 1:33
    your password, or otherwise.
  • 1:33 - 1:35
So we, we were seeing trends of attempts
  • 1:35 - 1:37
to kind of reach out and say, help now or
  • 1:37 - 1:39
    please send money here.
  • 1:39 - 1:41
    We, we are also seeing
    impersonation attempts
  • 1:41 - 1:43
    around special offers.
  • 1:43 - 1:46
    So, you know, if it
looks too good to be true
  • 1:46 - 1:50
    it probably is, if you're
    being offered free items
  • 1:50 - 1:52
    that are high monetary value,
  • 1:52 - 1:54
    but you're being asked
    to immediately, you know,
  • 1:54 - 1:56
put your credit card information down
  • 1:56 - 1:59
    and that's definitely another
red flag to look out for.
  • 2:00 - 2:03
    - Wow. It, it is a dangerous world
  • 2:03 - 2:05
    but I'm glad there are
    folks like you who are,
  • 2:05 - 2:07
    are helping keep dragging.
  • 2:07 - 2:08
    It feels like it's a
    never ending arms race
  • 2:08 - 2:10
so we have to stay vigilant.
  • 2:10 - 2:12
    - Definitely. I think
    that's our biggest tip
  • 2:12 - 2:15
is to be proactive and definitely
  • 2:15 - 2:18
    take a bit before clicking
    on something suspicious
  • 2:19 - 2:21
and, and, and verify, you know
  • 2:21 - 2:22
if there's a, you receive something
  • 2:22 - 2:25
    you think it looks like
    it's from someone you know
  • 2:25 - 2:27
    or something you're familiar with,
  • 2:27 - 2:29
go ahead and find another way to confirm
  • 2:29 - 2:31
    that that's actually the case.
  • 2:31 - 2:33
    - And always check the link
    you're about to click on
  • 2:33 - 2:35
and before you type in a password,
  • 2:35 - 2:39
think three times are my takeaways.
  • 2:39 - 2:41
    And two step verification.
  • 2:41 - 2:41
    - Absolutely.
  • 2:43 - 2:46
    - Thanks so much, Grace,
    that was really useful.
  • 2:46 - 2:47
    - Thank you Sal.
