5 ways to create stronger connections
-
0:00 - 0:03So when was the last time
that you wrote a handwritten note? -
0:03 - 0:04It's probably been a while.
-
0:04 - 0:07[The Way We Work]
-
0:08 - 0:11Technology has changed
the way we communicate. -
0:11 - 0:12We send emails, not letters,
-
0:12 - 0:14text messages, not phone calls.
-
0:14 - 0:17We order delivery instead of
cooking dinners in our kitchen. -
0:17 - 0:19All in the name of efficiency.
-
0:19 - 0:20But here's the point.
-
0:20 - 0:22Technology has made it
easier to communicate. -
0:22 - 0:25But it hasn't made it easier to connect
-
0:25 - 0:26with other human beings.
-
0:26 - 0:28I've found that the secret to connecting
-
0:28 - 0:31in the high-tech, fast-paced
world that we live in, -
0:31 - 0:34is doing a few small things
the old-fashioned way. -
0:34 - 0:36Write a letter.
-
0:36 - 0:38I've written thousands
of handwritten notes. -
0:38 - 0:41Thanking people for advice,
thanking them for an interview. -
0:41 - 0:44It just puts that extra effort
to show someone that you really care -
0:44 - 0:46and that you're willing
to go above and beyond. -
0:46 - 0:50Some advice for writing a thank-you letter
is to really make it clear -
0:50 - 0:52to the person that you're writing to
-
0:52 - 0:54the impact that they
have had on your life. -
0:54 - 0:55Talk about something specific.
-
0:55 - 0:58Like "Thank you
for the advice that you gave me. -
0:58 - 1:02It's because of the advice you gave me,
that I am now doing x." -
1:02 - 1:04People are looking to make a difference.
-
1:04 - 1:07And so if you can show someone
that they've really had an impact -
1:07 - 1:10on the life that you're living,
the life you're pursuing, -
1:10 - 1:11it could have a huge impact.
-
1:11 - 1:12Pick up the phone and dial.
-
1:12 - 1:14We've hired thousands of employees.
-
1:14 - 1:17And I've personally called
every single one of them -
1:17 - 1:19to welcome them to the Compass family.
-
1:19 - 1:22I'm able to set the tone
of really what I want the company to be. -
1:22 - 1:24Where, you know,
people go above and beyond -
1:24 - 1:28to make people feel welcomed
and to give people a sense of belonging. -
1:28 - 1:30And sometimes I call people
on their last day of work. -
1:30 - 1:33When people leave,
sometimes they're more transparent -
1:33 - 1:36than they ever were when they
were still at the company. -
1:36 - 1:38And so it's a great opportunity
to get feedback -
1:38 - 1:40that is very hard to get otherwise.
-
1:40 - 1:43Ask interesting and meaningful questions
when you get outside of the office. -
1:43 - 1:45When I'm traveling the country,
-
1:45 - 1:47every night I'll have dinner
with people in the company. -
1:47 - 1:51And I like to ask questions like
"What's your underlying motivation? -
1:51 - 1:54What's something that's happened
this week that meant a lot to you?" -
1:54 - 1:56And when you go around the table,
-
1:56 - 1:58and people really open up
and are able to engage, -
1:58 - 2:00it sets a different tone.
-
2:00 - 2:01When people come back to the office,
-
2:01 - 2:04they can see each other
and they know each other in a deeper way. -
2:04 - 2:06Answer questions with honesty.
-
2:06 - 2:08You know how it feels
when you go into an elevator -
2:08 - 2:10and someone says, "How was your weekend?"
-
2:10 - 2:14It could've been the best weekend ever,
you could've met the love of your life, -
2:14 - 2:16and you would say, "Good, how was yours?"
-
2:16 - 2:19If you want to connect with people,
then you have to open up. -
2:19 - 2:22I'm not always that good at it,
and I imagine most people aren't. -
2:22 - 2:25But that's why being open
stands out so much, -
2:25 - 2:26because most people aren't.
-
2:26 - 2:28Turn the video on.
-
2:28 - 2:31I would always recommend
a videoconference over a phone call. -
2:31 - 2:34Because that's when you can see
the real personality come out. -
2:34 - 2:36When you're on video,
you're forced to be present. -
2:36 - 2:38It's almost a forcing mechanism
to be in the moment. -
2:38 - 2:40Nobody succeeds alone.
-
2:40 - 2:41The more you can take time
-
2:41 - 2:44to develop genuine,
authentic relationships, -
2:44 - 2:47the more you're going to be able
to realize your dreams. -
2:47 - 2:51You're going to be able to take big risks
and know that there's a network of people -
2:51 - 2:53to cheer you on
and to support your efforts.
