Laughter is medicine | Anjelah Johnson | TEDxUniversityofNevada
-
0:13 - 0:15Hello!
-
0:15 - 0:17(Applause)
-
0:18 - 0:21Reno, Nevada,
-
0:21 - 0:22the biggest little city,
-
0:22 - 0:24look at us!
-
0:25 - 0:28Oh, I am so excited
to be here, you guys. -
0:28 - 0:31Listen, when they first
asked me to do this, -
0:31 - 0:34they were like, "Hey,
would you like to do a TEDx Talk?" -
0:34 - 0:37And I was like, "Me?!
-
0:37 - 0:41Yes, I would love to talk
about something important -
0:41 - 0:46and think about an idea worth sharing."
-
0:47 - 0:49And they're like, "No, no, no.
Just say your jokes." -
0:49 - 0:52(Laughter)
-
0:52 - 0:54Oh, cool, cool cool! Yeah, yeah, yeah!
-
0:54 - 0:55I'll do that. I'll do that.
-
0:56 - 0:59Let me just share
some jokes with you today. -
1:01 - 1:04I've been doing stand-up comedy
for almost 12 years now. -
1:04 - 1:08And when I first started,
I was young and fresh. -
1:08 - 1:10Now I'm getting older.
-
1:10 - 1:12I mean, I know, I still look young.
-
1:12 - 1:13Thank you so much!
-
1:13 - 1:15(Laughter)
-
1:15 - 1:17But I'm getting older, you guys.
-
1:17 - 1:21And this is how you know
you're getting older: -
1:21 - 1:24when you hurt your back
-
1:24 - 1:26but you don't know how.
-
1:26 - 1:28(Laughter)
-
1:30 - 1:34Like, I don't even have
a cool story to tell you guys. -
1:34 - 1:35(Laughter)
-
1:35 - 1:40Like, I can't be like, "Oh yeah,
last week I was skiing, and ... -
1:40 - 1:41(Laughter)
-
1:42 - 1:44you know how I do this.
-
1:44 - 1:46(Laughter)
-
1:46 - 1:47I went hard."
-
1:47 - 1:48(Laughter)
-
1:48 - 1:50No, I was putting my socks on.
-
1:50 - 1:52(Laughter)
-
1:55 - 1:56Yeah, I went hard.
-
1:56 - 1:58(Laughter)
-
1:58 - 1:59Getting older -
-
1:59 - 2:03Have you ever been walking down the street
minding your own business, -
2:03 - 2:05and all of a sudden,
your knee is like, "Hey!" -
2:05 - 2:07(Laughter)
-
2:08 - 2:09And you're like, "What happened?"
-
2:09 - 2:10(Laughter)
-
2:11 - 2:12We know how to do this!"
-
2:12 - 2:13(Laughter)
-
2:16 - 2:19I hurt my back,
so I went to get a massage. -
2:19 - 2:23And this next part of my story
you're probably not even going to believe. -
2:23 - 2:26You're going to be like,
"Oh, she just made that up for a joke." -
2:26 - 2:28Promise you, no, I didn't.
-
2:28 - 2:29(Laughter)
-
2:29 - 2:31Went to get a massage,
-
2:31 - 2:35and the guy who was giving me
my massage fell asleep. -
2:35 - 2:37(Laughter)
-
2:40 - 2:41I know.
-
2:41 - 2:44I know you're probably thinking
to yourselves right now, -
2:44 - 2:46"How is that even possible?"
-
2:46 - 2:47(Laughter)
-
2:47 - 2:49I didn't know it was an option either.
-
2:49 - 2:50(Laughter)
-
2:51 - 2:55Apparently, I'm really good
at reverse relaxation. -
2:55 - 2:57(Laughter)
-
2:57 - 2:59But I should have known,
-
2:59 - 3:01I should have known
it was going to be weird -
3:01 - 3:04because it started off weird.
-
3:04 - 3:08He started by asking me
these seance type questions. -
3:08 - 3:12He was like, "Okay, close your eyes,
take a deep breath. -
3:12 - 3:16Now tell me, Where are you?"
-
3:16 - 3:17(Laughter)
-
3:17 - 3:18(Breathes in)
-
3:18 - 3:20"Massage Envy."
-
3:20 - 3:22(Laughter)
-
3:28 - 3:31"Now tell me, What are you?"
-
3:36 - 3:37"A girl?
-
3:37 - 3:39(Laughter)
-
3:40 - 3:42Um, I don't like this part
of the massage." -
3:42 - 3:43(Laughter)
-
3:43 - 3:45So he starts by rubbing my feet, right?
-
3:45 - 3:48We're fifteen minutes into the massage,
he's rubbing my feet. -
3:48 - 3:50All of a sudden,
he starts to slow down. -
3:52 - 3:54(Laughter)
-
3:55 - 3:59Next thing you know, he just stopped.
-
3:59 - 4:00(Laughter)
-
4:01 - 4:03Now, he's just holding my foot.
-
4:03 - 4:05(Laughter)
-
4:10 - 4:13At first, I thought he was doing
his seance thing again. -
4:13 - 4:14(Laughter)
-
4:14 - 4:16I was like, "Oh, Okay!
-
4:16 - 4:17(Laughter)
-
4:17 - 4:21He is probably meditating
the pain out my foot." -
4:21 - 4:22(Laughter)
-
4:23 - 4:27But then I could hear his breathing
get real deep and slow, like this. -
4:28 - 4:34(Breathes heavily)
-
4:35 - 4:36And then he did this.
-
4:39 - 4:41(Laughter)
-
4:44 - 4:46He startled himself awake
-
4:46 - 4:48(Laughter)
-
4:48 - 4:50and then continued the massage.
-
4:50 - 4:51(Laughter)
-
4:51 - 4:54Listen, if you've never
gotten a massage before, -
4:54 - 4:56you don't fully understand.
-
4:57 - 5:00It's a vulnerable situation,
-
5:01 - 5:02okay?
-
5:02 - 5:03Because you're lying there,
-
5:03 - 5:04naked,
-
5:04 - 5:05(Laughter)
-
5:05 - 5:07with a little tiny sheet on.
-
5:08 - 5:10There's a stranger touching you.
-
5:11 - 5:15Anytime you're naked
with a stranger, that's awkward. -
5:15 - 5:17(Laughter)
-
5:18 - 5:20Unless you're the creepy guy at the gym.
-
5:20 - 5:22(Laughter)
-
5:22 - 5:23He's okay with it.
-
5:23 - 5:25(Laughter)
-
5:29 - 5:32It's a vulnerable situation,
getting a massage. -
5:32 - 5:34How about this one?
-
5:34 - 5:35What do you do
-
5:35 - 5:38if your massage therapist
has a bad breath? -
5:40 - 5:41Oh, it happens.
-
5:42 - 5:43Oh yeah,
-
5:43 - 5:46you're lying there trying to relax.
-
5:46 - 5:48His face is over your face.
-
5:48 - 5:51You can smell his bad breath.
-
5:51 - 5:53So you start breathing through your mouth.
-
5:53 - 5:55(Laughter)
-
5:55 - 5:57(Breaths heavily)
-
5:57 - 5:58(Laughter)
-
5:58 - 6:00(Breaths heavily)
-
6:00 - 6:03But then you don't want
his bad breath in your mouth. -
6:03 - 6:05(Laughter)
-
6:05 - 6:08So now you got to calculate
your breathing with his breathing. -
6:12 - 6:14(Laughter)
-
6:17 - 6:21Like, I know I requested
the aromatherapy massage, -
6:21 - 6:23(Laughter)
-
6:23 - 6:26but I didn't know I had to get specific.
-
6:26 - 6:28(Laughter)
-
6:28 - 6:31And there's different kinds
of bad breath, -
6:32 - 6:33there's different kinds.
-
6:33 - 6:37Like, you can tell when somebody
just got off their lunch break. -
6:37 - 6:41You'd be like, "Ah, man!
He just had onions. That sucks." -
6:42 - 6:44But at least it's identifiable.
-
6:44 - 6:46(Laughter)
-
6:48 - 6:49Like coffee breath.
-
6:49 - 6:51That's identifiable.
-
6:51 - 6:56I can respect coffee breath
because that's a working mans' breath. -
6:56 - 6:58(Laughter)
-
6:59 - 7:04But then, there's the kind of breath
where they are dying on the inside. -
7:04 - 7:06(Laughter)
-
7:08 - 7:10Gum can not help this kind,
-
7:10 - 7:12(Laughter)
-
7:12 - 7:14because if they put gum in the mouth,
-
7:14 - 7:17the breath is just going
to come out the nose. -
7:17 - 7:19(Laughter)
-
7:20 - 7:21It will find you.
-
7:21 - 7:23(Laughter)
-
7:24 - 7:28God forbid you have to speak up
and say something during a massage. -
7:29 - 7:30It's so awkward.
-
7:31 - 7:34Like, maybe they are
massaging you way too hard. -
7:34 - 7:36Then you have to speak up and be like,
-
7:36 - 7:40"Oh, sorry, um,
could you not leave bruises?" -
7:40 - 7:42(Laughter)
-
7:43 - 7:45Or maybe they are massaging you,
like, way too soft, -
7:46 - 7:49like they're doing tickle massage.
-
7:49 - 7:50(Laughter)
-
7:51 - 7:55And you're like, "Um, well,
I could have my husband do this at home." -
7:55 - 7:58(Laughter)
-
8:01 - 8:04Now you got to speak up and be like,
-
8:04 - 8:06"Oh, sorry, um, could you try?"
-
8:06 - 8:09(Laughter)
-
8:16 - 8:19Now it's the most awkward for me
because I have to be like, -
8:19 - 8:22"Oh, sorry, could you not be asleep?"
-
8:22 - 8:24(Laughter)
-
8:25 - 8:27It was the weirdest massage I've ever had.
-
8:27 - 8:29I didn't even know what to do after that.
-
8:29 - 8:32I just grabbed my cucumber water,
got the heck out of there. -
8:33 - 8:35But my back still hurt,
-
8:35 - 8:39so I went and I got a free massage
over at Brookstone. -
8:39 - 8:41(Laughter)
-
8:43 - 8:47Don't act like you've never sat
in the massage chair at Brookstone. -
8:47 - 8:48(Laughter)
-
8:48 - 8:50Everybody walks by that store
-
8:50 - 8:53acting like they've never heard
of a massage chair before. -
8:54 - 8:57"Oh, wow!
-
8:57 - 8:58(Laughter)
-
8:58 - 9:00It massages?
-
9:00 - 9:01Oh.
-
9:01 - 9:03(Laughter)
-
9:03 - 9:04I can sit?
-
9:04 - 9:06Oh, sure, I'll try it out.
-
9:06 - 9:07Sure!
-
9:08 - 9:09Oh, comfy.
-
9:11 - 9:12Push the green button?
-
9:12 - 9:14Okay.
-
9:15 - 9:20Oh, yep, really good pressure.
-
9:20 - 9:22(Laughter)
-
9:22 - 9:23I like it a lot."
-
9:26 - 9:28But then all of a sudden,
the massage changes -
9:29 - 9:31to the shiatsu shimmy.
-
9:31 - 9:33(Laughter)
-
9:34 - 9:35Ladies,
-
9:36 - 9:38you know the shiatsu shimmy.
-
9:38 - 9:40(Laughter)
-
9:41 - 9:43At first, you try to fight it.
-
9:43 - 9:46(Laughter)
-
9:52 - 9:53I hope nobody's watching.
-
9:53 - 9:55(Laughter)
-
9:57 - 9:59But then after a while,
you just embrace it, -
9:59 - 10:01you're like, oh well!
-
10:01 - 10:03(Laughter)
-
10:06 - 10:09All the guys at Gamestop
across the way start watching. -
10:09 - 10:12(Laughter)
-
10:12 - 10:13Yeah, light them up, boys!
-
10:13 - 10:14(Laughter)
-
10:20 - 10:23I'll just stick to my husband's massages.
-
10:24 - 10:27My husband and I have been married
for seven years, you guys. -
10:27 - 10:28Seven years!
-
10:28 - 10:29Thank you!
-
10:29 - 10:30( Applause)
-
10:31 - 10:32Thank you!
-
10:32 - 10:36And in our house, in our relationship,
-
10:36 - 10:38our roles are kind of reversed,
-
10:38 - 10:40and we are okay with that.
-
10:40 - 10:43Like, whatever works for you
in your relationship, -
10:43 - 10:44do that.
-
10:44 - 10:46Do what works.
-
10:46 - 10:49For us, our roles
are a little flippy floppy, -
10:49 - 10:50you know?
-
10:50 - 10:52Like, I bring home the bacon.
-
10:52 - 10:55(Applause)
-
10:56 - 10:58I am just not allowed to cook it.
-
10:58 - 11:00(Laughter)
-
11:02 - 11:04My husband loves to go shopping;
-
11:05 - 11:09I love to sit outside the store
with the rest of the husbands. -
11:09 - 11:11(Laughter)
-
11:12 - 11:15He is super sexy and fashionable;
-
11:16 - 11:18lots of people think I am a lesbian.
-
11:18 - 11:20(Laughter)
-
11:21 - 11:23Girls will flirt with my husband
right in front of me -
11:24 - 11:26because they think
I am his gay little buddy. -
11:26 - 11:27(Laughter)
-
11:27 - 11:31They're like, "Ah, where are you from?"
-
11:31 - 11:33"Ah, he's from my house."
-
11:33 - 11:35(Laughter)
-
11:35 - 11:37(Applause)
-
11:40 - 11:43My husband has a beautiful afro,
-
11:43 - 11:46so girls are always like,
"Oh, can I feel your hair?" -
11:46 - 11:47"Oh, you could feel my fist.
-
11:47 - 11:49Hmm, hmm, hmm!"
-
11:49 - 11:50(Laughter)
-
11:51 - 11:53Wow, your little buddy's feisty.
-
11:53 - 11:55(Laughter)
-
11:57 - 12:01Sometimes when we go places, my husband
likes to pick out my outfit for me -
12:01 - 12:04because he wants to make sure
I look like a girl when we get there. -
12:04 - 12:06(Laughter)
-
12:06 - 12:08He'll be like, "Alright babe, let's see.
-
12:08 - 12:09Put on these jeans right here" -
-
12:09 - 12:11yep, my favorite -
-
12:11 - 12:12"this T-shirt" -
-
12:12 - 12:14I like where this is going -
-
12:14 - 12:16"and these stilettos" -
-
12:16 - 12:18aargh, so close.
-
12:18 - 12:20(Laughter)
-
12:20 - 12:23And I get it, my husband
wants to see me in heels -
12:23 - 12:25because women look sexy in heels -
-
12:26 - 12:28just not this woman.
-
12:28 - 12:29(Laughter)
-
12:29 - 12:30And I will tell you why.
-
12:30 - 12:33Because I am bowlegged.
-
12:38 - 12:40See how my knees don't touch?
-
12:41 - 12:43Trying my hardest.
-
12:43 - 12:44(Laughter)
-
12:46 - 12:48Girl right here,
in the front, in the center, -
12:48 - 12:52do you see how my feet are closed
-
12:52 - 12:55but you can still see the stool behind me?
-
12:55 - 12:56(Laughter)
-
13:01 - 13:04So that means when I wear heels,
-
13:04 - 13:05I look like this.
-
13:07 - 13:10(Laughter)
-
13:10 - 13:12Look like I rode my horse to the club.
-
13:12 - 13:15(Laughter)
-
13:15 - 13:19Aee, aee, aeeaeeaeeaee!
-
13:19 - 13:20(Laughter)
-
13:23 - 13:27You guys, if I am wearing heels
-
13:27 - 13:29and I want to do something daring,
-
13:29 - 13:31like walk,
-
13:31 - 13:33(Laughter)
-
13:33 - 13:36I have to bend my knees a little bit.
-
13:38 - 13:42(Laughter)
-
13:44 - 13:45Look like a camel.
-
13:45 - 13:46(Laughter)
-
13:47 - 13:51Look like a camel trying
to fold itself to get some rest. -
13:53 - 13:55(Laughter)
-
13:56 - 13:59(Applause)
-
14:07 - 14:08(Spits)
-
14:08 - 14:10(Laughter)
-
14:15 - 14:17That's not sexy at all.
-
14:19 - 14:23We live in Hollywood,
and it's weird living in Hollywood -
14:24 - 14:28because there is always,
like, rumors and gossip. -
14:28 - 14:30And there was actually
a rumor going around -
14:30 - 14:34that I was dating
Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. -
14:34 - 14:35(Audience) Wooh!
-
14:35 - 14:36That's what I said.
-
14:36 - 14:39(Laughter)
-
14:40 - 14:41I was like, "Wooh, okay!"
-
14:41 - 14:43(Laughter)
-
14:43 - 14:45Hey, Mr. Rock.
-
14:45 - 14:46(Laughter)
-
14:47 - 14:51I mean, that was me.
I started that one. I did that. -
14:51 - 14:53(Laughter)
-
14:56 - 14:59Didn't quite catch on
like I thought it would. -
14:59 - 15:00(Laughter)
-
15:00 - 15:03I tweeted it out
and only three people replied. -
15:03 - 15:05Two people were like, "No way!"
-
15:05 - 15:07One guy was like, "You wish!"
-
15:07 - 15:09(Laughter)
-
15:09 - 15:10It was my husband.
-
15:10 - 15:12(Laughter)
-
15:16 - 15:18I got kind of famous on Youtube
-
15:18 - 15:20for this joke about
going to get my nails done. -
15:20 - 15:24(Applause)
-
15:26 - 15:27So you've heard it.
-
15:27 - 15:30(Laughter)
-
15:30 - 15:33This is the joke that put me on the map.
-
15:33 - 15:36People know of me because of this joke.
-
15:37 - 15:40People come to my shows
just for this joke. -
15:41 - 15:44And it is a blessing; it really is.
-
15:45 - 15:48Because not every comedian
gets to say that they have that, -
15:49 - 15:52that they have something
that has resonated with so many people, -
15:52 - 15:55and that these people
will then pay their hard earned money -
15:55 - 15:58to come and see you perform live.
-
15:58 - 16:01So I just want to say
that I am so grateful -
16:01 - 16:04that I get to make
people laugh for a living. -
16:05 - 16:08Because laughter is medicine,
and I get to be a part of the medicine. -
16:08 - 16:10I am so grateful for that.
-
16:10 - 16:14So as long as this joke continues
to bring people joy, -
16:14 - 16:16then I will continue to do it.
-
