Why you should make useless things

  • Not Synced
    (Exhale)
  • Not Synced
    Hello.
  • Not Synced
    My name is Simone.
  • Not Synced
You know how people tell you
  • Not Synced
if you get nervous when on stage,
  • Not Synced
picture people in the audience naked.
  • Not Synced
Like it's this thing that's supposed
    to make you feel better.
  • Not Synced
    But I was thinking --
  • Not Synced
picturing all of you naked in 2018
feels kind of weird and wrong.
  • Not Synced
    Like we're working really hard
on moving past stuff like that,
  • Not Synced
so we need a new method of dealing with
if you get nervous on stage.
  • Not Synced
And I realized that what I'd really like
  • Not Synced
is that I can look at you as much
as you're looking at me --
  • Not Synced
just to even things out a little bit.
  • Not Synced
So if I had way more eyeballs,
  • Not Synced
    then we'd all be really
    comfortable, right?
  • Not Synced
So in preparation for this talk,
  • Not Synced
    I made myself a shirt.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    It's googly eyes.
  • Not Synced
    It took be 14 hours
  • Not Synced
and 227 googly eyes to make this shirt,
  • Not Synced
and being able to look at you
as much as you're looking at me
  • Not Synced
    is actually only half
of the reason I made this.
  • Not Synced
The other half is being able to do this.
  • Not Synced
    (Shirt shakes)
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
So I do a lot of things like this.
  • Not Synced
    I see a problem and I invent
some sort of solution to it.
  • Not Synced
    For example,
  • Not Synced
    brushing your teeth.
  • Not Synced
Like, it's this thing we all have to do,
  • Not Synced
    it's kind of boring,
  • Not Synced
    and nobody really likes it.
  • Not Synced
    If there were any
    seven-year-olds in the audience,
  • Not Synced
    they'd be like, "Yes!"
  • Not Synced
So what about if you had
a machine that could do it for you?
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    I call it ...
  • Not Synced
I call it "The Toothbrush Helmet."
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    (Toothbrush noise)
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
So my toothbrush helmet is recommended
by zero out of 10 dentists,
  • Not Synced
and it definitely did not revolutionize
    the world of dentistry,
  • Not Synced
but it did completely change my life,
  • Not Synced
because I finished making this toothbrush
    helmet three years ago,
  • Not Synced
and after I finished making it,
  • Not Synced
I went into my living room
  • Not Synced
and I put up a camera,
  • Not Synced
    and I filmed a seven-second clip
    of it working.
  • Not Synced
    And by now,
  • Not Synced
    this is a pretty standard
    modern-day fairy tale
  • Not Synced
of girl posting on the internet,
  • Not Synced
the internet takes the girl my storm,
  • Not Synced
    thousands of men voyage
    into the comment sections
  • Not Synced
to ask for her hand in marriage --
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    she ignores all of them,
  • Not Synced
    starts a YouTube channel,
  • Not Synced
    and keeps on building robots.
  • Not Synced
Since then, I've carved out this little
niche for myself on the internet
  • Not Synced
as an inventor of useless machines,
  • Not Synced
    because as we all know,
  • Not Synced
    the easiest way to be
at the top of your field
  • Not Synced
is to choose a very small field.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
So I run a YouTube channel
    about my machines,
  • Not Synced
    and I've done things like
    cutting hair with drones --
  • Not Synced
    (Drone flies)
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
to a machine that helps me
wake up in the morning --
  • Not Synced
    (Alarm)
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    (Video) Ow!
  • Not Synced
to this machine that helps me
    chop vegetables.
  • Not Synced
    (Knife chops)
  • Not Synced
    I'm not an engineer.
  • Not Synced
I did not study engineering in school.
  • Not Synced
But I was a super ambitious
    student growing up.
  • Not Synced
In middle school and high school
    I had straight A's,
  • Not Synced
and I graduated at the top of my year.
  • Not Synced
On the flip side of that,
  • Not Synced
    I struggled with very severe
    performance anxiety.
  • Not Synced
Here's an email I sent to my brother
    around that time.
  • Not Synced
    "You won't understand how difficult
it is for me to tell you,
  • Not Synced
    to confess this.
  • Not Synced
    I'm so freaking embarrassed,
  • Not Synced
    I don't want people
    to think that I'm stupid.
  • Not Synced
Now I'm starting to cry too.
  • Not Synced
    Damn."
  • Not Synced
And no, I did not accidentally burn
    our parents' house down.
  • Not Synced
The thing I'm writing about in the email,
  • Not Synced
and the thing I'm so upset about,
  • Not Synced
is that I got a B on a math test.
  • Not Synced
    So something obviously happened
    between here and here.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
One of those things was puberty ...
  • Not Synced
    beautful time indeed.
  • Not Synced
    But moreover,
  • Not Synced
I got interested in building robots,
  • Not Synced
and I wanted to teach myself
    about hardware.
  • Not Synced
    But building things with hardware,
  • Not Synced
    especially if you're teaching yourself,
  • Not Synced
    is something that's really
    difficult to do.
  • Not Synced
It has a high likelihood of failure,
  • Not Synced
    and moreover,
  • Not Synced
it has a high likelihood of making
    you feel stupid.
  • Not Synced
And that was my biggest fear at the time.
  • Not Synced
So I came up with a setup that would
guarantee success 100 percent of the time.
  • Not Synced
    With my setup,
  • Not Synced
it would be nearly impossible to fail.
  • Not Synced
And that was instead of trying to succeed,
  • Not Synced
I was going to try to build
    things that would fail.
  • Not Synced
    And even though I didn't
    realize it at the time,
  • Not Synced
    building stupid things
    was actually quite smart,
  • Not Synced
    because as I kept on
    learning about hardware,
  • Not Synced
for the first time in my life,
  • Not Synced
I did not have to deal
    with my performance anxiety.
  • Not Synced
And as soon as I removed
all pressure and expectations from myself,
  • Not Synced
    that pressure quickly
    got replaced by enthusiasm,
  • Not Synced
and it allowed me to just play.
  • Not Synced
    So as an inventor,
  • Not Synced
    I'm interested in things
    that people struggle with:
  • Not Synced
it can be small things or big things
    or medium-sized things,
  • Not Synced
and something like giving a TED talk
presents this whole new set of problems
  • Not Synced
    that I can solve.
  • Not Synced
    And identifying a problem
is the first step in my process
  • Not Synced
    of building a useless machine.
  • Not Synced
    So before I came here,
  • Not Synced
I sat down and I thought of some
of the potential problems I might have
  • Not Synced
    in giving this talk.
  • Not Synced
    Forgetting what to say,
  • Not Synced
    that people won't laugh --
  • Not Synced
    that's you --
  • Not Synced
    or even worse,
  • Not Synced
that you'll laugh at the wrong things --
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
that was an OK part to laugh at,
  • Not Synced
    thank you.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
Or that when I get nervous,
  • Not Synced
    my hands start shaking
  • Not Synced
and I'm really self-conscious about it.
  • Not Synced
Or that my fly has been
    open this entire time,
  • Not Synced
and all of you noticed but I didn't,
  • Not Synced
    but it's closed so we're
    all good on that one.
  • Not Synced
But one thing I'm actually really
nervous about is my hands shaking.
  • Not Synced
    I remember when I was a kid,
  • Not Synced
    giving presentations in school,
  • Not Synced
I would have my notes on a piece of paper,
  • Not Synced
and I would put a notebook
    behind the paper
  • Not Synced
so that people wouldn't be able to see
    the paper quivering.
  • Not Synced
And I give a lot of talks.
  • Not Synced
I know that about half of you
in the audience are probably like,
  • Not Synced
"Building useless machines is really fun,
  • Not Synced
but how is this in any way
    or form a business?"
  • Not Synced
And giving talks is a part of it.
  • Not Synced
And the arrangers always put out
a glass of water for you onstage
  • Not Synced
so you have something to drink
    if you get thirsty,
  • Not Synced
    and I always so badly
    want to drink that water,
  • Not Synced
but I don't dare to pick the glass up,
  • Not Synced
because then people might be able
to see that my hands are shaking.
  • Not Synced
    So what about a machine
that hands you a glass of water?
  • Not Synced
    Sold to the nervous girl
    in the google-eye shirt.
  • Not Synced
Actually, I need to take this off
    because I have a thing --
  • Not Synced
    (Google-eyes shake)
  • Not Synced
    Oh.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
I still don't know what to call this,
  • Not Synced
    but I think some sort
    of "head orbit device?"
  • Not Synced
    Because it rotates
    this platform around you,
  • Not Synced
and you can put anything on it.
  • Not Synced
    You can have a camera,
  • Not Synced
you can get photos of your entire head.
  • Not Synced
    Like it's really --
  • Not Synced
    it's very versatile machine.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    OK, and I have --
  • Not Synced
I mean, you can put some snacks
    on it for example,
  • Not Synced
    if you want to.
  • Not Synced
    I have some popcorn here.
  • Not Synced
And you just put a little bit like that.
  • Not Synced
There's some sacrifices for science --
  • Not Synced
some popcorn falling on the floor.
  • Not Synced
Let's do the long way around.
  • Not Synced
    (Robot spins)
  • Not Synced
And then you have a little hand.
  • Not Synced
You need to adjust the height of it,
  • Not Synced
and you just do it by shrugging.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    It's has a little hand.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
I just bumped my mic off,
  • Not Synced
but I think we're all good.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
OK, also I need to chew this popcorn,
  • Not Synced
so if you guys could just clap
your hands a little bit more --
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
OK, so it's like your own little
    personal solar system,
  • Not Synced
    because I'm a millennial,
  • Not Synced
so I want everything to revolve around me.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
Back to the glass of water,
  • Not Synced
    that's what we're here for.
  • Not Synced
    So, I promise --
  • Not Synced
I mean, it still has --
  • Not Synced
it doesn't have any water in it,
  • Not Synced
    I'm sorry.
  • Not Synced
But I still need to work
on this machine a little bit
  • Not Synced
because I still need to pick up the glass
and put it on the platform,
  • Not Synced
    but if your hands
    are shaking a little bit,
  • Not Synced
    nobody's going to notice
  • Not Synced
    because you're wearing a very
    mesmerizing piece of equipment.
  • Not Synced
    So, we're all good.
  • Not Synced
    OK.
  • Not Synced
    (Robot spins)
  • Not Synced
    (Singing)
  • Not Synced
    Oh no, it got stuck.
  • Not Synced
Isn't it comforting that even robots
    sometimes get stage fright?
  • Not Synced
It just gets stuck a little bit.
  • Not Synced
    It's very human of them.
  • Not Synced
Oh wait, let's go back a little bit,
  • Not Synced
    and then --
  • Not Synced
    (Glass falls)
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
Isn't it a beautiful time to be alive?
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
So as much as my machines can seem
    like simple engineering slapstick,
  • Not Synced
    I realized that I stumbled
    on something bigger than that.
  • Not Synced
It's this expression of joy and humility
that often gets lost in engineering,
  • Not Synced
and for me it was a way
    to learn about hardware
  • Not Synced
    without having my performance
    anxiety get in the way.
  • Not Synced
I often get asked if I think I'm ever
    going to build something useful,
  • Not Synced
    and maybe someday I will.
  • Not Synced
But the way I see it,
  • Not Synced
    I already have
  • Not Synced
because I've built myself this job,
  • Not Synced
and it's something that I could
    never have planned for
  • Not Synced
    or that I could --
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
It's something that I could never
    have planned for.
  • Not Synced
    Instead it happened just because
I was enthusiastic about what I was doing,
  • Not Synced
and I was sharing that enthusiasm
    with other people.
  • Not Synced
To me there's a true beauty
    of making useless things,
  • Not Synced
    because it's this acknowledgment
  • Not Synced
    that you don't always know
    what the best answer is.
  • Not Synced
And it turns off that voice in your head
  • Not Synced
that tells you that you know
    exactly how the world works.
  • Not Synced
    And maybe a toothbrush helmet
    isn't the answer,
  • Not Synced
but at least you're asking the question.
  • Not Synced
    Thank you.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
